"Latinx" is an Anglicized bastardization of a beautiful Romance language, hearing people say "Latinx" instead of using "Latino" or "Latina" makes me want to rip my ears out and set them ablaze. Absolutely right. I understand if people want their language to be more expressive, but “Latinx” is like trying to fit a square block into a round whole. Most latinos speak Spanish or Portuguese, these language’s orthographies wholly conflict with this word. The word is anti useful to the very people this word is meant to represent. I don't see any Spanish speaking country adopting latinx. This is hopefully staying in the US and it will probably be used by latinos who can't speak Spanish.
I just believe that these non spanish speakers can't understand that latino is legit the gender neutral term. Yes it has two meanings, but im a girl and im a latino AND a latina. Aside from basic spanish grammar... if they don't like the O in latino then they can use latin... its honestly right there to use but they want to create a new word for something that already exists.
It’s great that you can call yourself a Latino and feel proud of it. And that is exactly the feeling that every person should feel. For that reason we should be respectful of how some people want to be identified and language is part of that identity marker. It’s an extra syllable that can go a long way for some people, so just do it.
As a Latina, I feel like "latinx" is a word created by Americans to tell us how we should be speaking our language. I don't see a problem with people calling us "latinos" even though I'm a latina. And for people who don't feel comfortable with it there is "latin" or "Latin-American" no need for an x there
What means being mexican? Hernan cortes the conqueror, he used that name to named México City, before it...... there was no México national identity, the mayas felt themselves Just mayas, aztecs felt them selves aztecs. Barely any latin american call themselves latinx. Only 2% of Latinos call themselves Latinx. It's only a term you just see in TH-cam and woke crowd trying to push a label that no one wants and just feels offensive.

That's easy. It's because the term was created with marketing in mind, and not the latino community's accessibility. The x comes from the common name given to a mathematical variable x, where x is a placeholder for a number. So while the young american generation can look at it and understand that x is a placeholder, latino immigrants who actually need a community in America can't relate to it because they can't even pronounce it in their language.
The issue I have is that you are trying to use English to change something that is in Spanish. For a lot of us, neither is our original language. Our indigenous language is not even considered. We have terms that envelop all without this bs X.
I think some would call that cultural appropriation. It just seems like a bunch of people who learned the basics of the language and didn’t like it so they just changed it to their liking

This was such a bad attempt of middle ground by jubilee. They were all literally for latin x. The representatives for latino/a are not even touching close to anything being said by our Latin American community like the comments here. This needed an actual discussion from both sides and maybe we would have both learned something, instead feeling as if this was a one way discussion.
None of them speak Spanish and none of them is really Latin American, they are just a bunch of English-speaking hypocrites who want to impose their North American ideas on millions of people who speak Spanish as their native language. The Royal Spanish, Academy which deals with the protection of the Spanish language, has *categorically refused* the term "latinx" and therefore the discussion of these people is only *pretentious, rude and contemptuous towards the Spanish language and an example of a lousy attempt at cultural appopriation* .
Since everyone is commenting with their stories and identities I’ll say mine. I am half Puerto Rican and I was born and am being raised in the United States. Personally I identify as mixed because my mom is Italian and Russian while my dad is Puerto Rican. When asked about my term I used in regards to my Latin ancestry I use Latina. My problem with you U.S. Latinos or Latinx is that you guys keep mashing us Latinos into a single category. I am Puerto Rican and I have nothing in common with Ecuadorians. Latin America is a region filled with countries that have their own culture, lifestyle, belief, and languages. Look, I'm trying to understand where you guys are coming from, but you really don't make sense. And I really didn't understand the purpose of bringing up Spain - Sometime I think you U.S. Latinos think us Latin Americans wait for Spain to shit. We're too busy worrying about our own countries because in case you haven't noticed some of us have political issues with corruption etc. And, lady, Spaniards are Latin, so are the Portuguese, French, Italian, Andorran, Sardinian, Corsican, and Monegasque. There's Latin America and Latin Europe. Come on, open a book or Google, it's not that hard.

I understand why the LGBTQ community would want to use Latinx to accommodate their pronouns. I just don't get why people not in that community would want to be called latinx as well. Latino is an all encompassing group of people. Thats just how Spanish works. When the cis hetero girl said to be latinx made her feminist heart happy and I rolled my eyes.
Most of spanish speaker lgbt people i know are KIND OF agreed with that neuter gender... just KIND OF.... it is not "everyone's agreed" it is more like "a few of lgbt people are agreed" and when i say "a few" it is literally a minority into the minority, also, some trans people get offended by the non-binary thing and think it is an insult to people who actually doesn't feel confortable with sex they were born with. in addition: hispanic lingüistics and academics consider the neuter pronouns pointless, i mean, we spanish speakers already have a neuter pronoun which is "ello" it is just that no one uses it to refer to a person whose gender or sex is unkown, (it used for refering to events or actions that were mentioned before, but sure it would work perfectly if people start to use it as neuter-third-singular-person pronoun, and keeping in mind the way plurals work in spanish, the plural pronoun "ellos" would be the actual neuter pronoun in spanish)
The term Latino AND Latina is inclusive of EVERYONE. They are masculine and feminine words but they both can be neutral/inclusive. "Somos Latinos" the masucline term includes everyone regardless of gender, sexual orientation or color. As well the phrase "Me gente Latina" which is the feminine word but yet again is inclusive of everyone. There are plenty of examples of this. They have a very superficial or bias way of looking at our language that they seem to not even really use on a day to day basis.
I am still amazed about how people born in the US, who does not speak spanish and did not live in a latino country to learn the language have the audacity to call themselves latinos. The level of self-entitlement is ridiculous.
That’s a different topic pal. They’re Latinos because they were born from parents and have adapted their culture. You try living in a centralized Hispanic city in the US and you’ll see how Latino it is.

You are not of latin decent, just wanted to clarify that The term "latino" is ridicolous because only european people from italy, spain, french, portugal and romania are because their descendents are ROMANS who spoke LATIN
The worst part of this, it that, "Latino" is already a gender-neutral word. And not only that, only the "Latinos" born and raised in the US. Use the term "Latino" to intensified themselves. They don't realize, (I believe) that, there are an enormous amount of countries in Latino America. Calling yourself "Latino" is ambiguous. (Is not bad using the term Latino, it's just an umbrella term.) No one from Mexico to Argentina calls themselves, "Latinos" to identify their ethnicity. They will tell you "I'm Mexican", or "Argentinian". or "Colombian". So having a bunch of kids raised in a first-world country, trying to change an entire language that they don't even know the rules of, just to fit their political view, is very infuriating.
I’m cool if someone wants to identify as non-binary and have a new term because Spanish is gendered but...can we make something that both languages can pronounce? Like Latine?
This problem just happens in the USA, for the rest of us we don’t even care about it. You can use “Latine” just to refer to the nb community, not to us all. And, why try to make a word in introduce it to the Spanish just because some people in the USA (that are more gringos than latinos) suddenly felt offended by that??

I agree with languages evolving and adapting but I profoundly disagree with the word 'Latinx' and some of their claims. It makes absolute sense for someone who's main language is English, but not for Spanish speakers. It cannot be pronounced by someone who does not speak English. It's enforcing a foreign pronunciation into the Spanish language and that to me is exclusivism. That's my guess why la Real Academia Española rejected the term - my granny could not say Latinx! Simple. There is also a false dichotomy in those who speak favourable of the Latinx term. They speak very negatively about Spain as a colonising power which I agree Spain has done immeasurable damage that still exists today. But often Latinx people speak from a US context and the US alone has exploited Latinos in Latin America for many decades, however that is omitted in their claims. My gut feeling is that the Latinx movement has more to do with people who feel both from an English and Spanish speaking culture and language but none at the same time. And that's ok. That's why I think there should be a term for those who feel Latino because they fully engage with a latino culture but equally there should be a place for those who do not feel either American (or other) and Latino.

What’s more, these people who want to call themselves Latinx and force others to exclusively use Latinx CAN’T EVEN SPEAK OR WRITE IN SPANISH! That’s what really gets me. If you want to change Latin culture, first do your research and learn the linguistic history of Spanish instead of just forcing us to use Latinx because you’re mad at the world. Period.

If you are from Spain. You aren't even a Latino or Latina to begin with. So you don't have to worry lol.
Why would we expect people from Spain to adopt it lol?? You're, not Latinos.
Literalmente.
That is so right!!!
I completely agree. Latino is literally the gender neutral form when speaking.
We called it comunidad latina too so idk why the big deal
It’s great that you can call yourself a Latino and feel proud of it. And that is exactly the feeling that every person should feel. For that reason we should be respectful of how some people want to be identified and language is part of that identity marker. It’s an extra syllable that can go a long way for some people, so just do it.
"it doesn't matter if you can speak Spanish"
so let's tell people how to speak Spanish. Lmfao
As a Latina, I feel like "latinx" is a word created by Americans to tell us how we should be speaking our language. I don't see a problem with people calling us "latinos" even though I'm a latina. And for people who don't feel comfortable with it there is "latin" or "Latin-American" no need for an x there
No it’s a word created by Americans to be used in English. No one is changing your language.

My grandfather who’s father was from Dominican Republic spoke Spanish my mom never learned it which in turned I never learned it I don’t identify as a person that’s Latin because I never spoke the language or represented the culture. But if you ask me I will tell you I am of Latin decent but I don’t and will not ever walk around pretending I’m apart of a culture I know not much about.
You are not of latin decent, just wanted to clarify that
The term "latino" is ridicolous because only european people from italy, spain, french, portugal and romania are because their descendents are ROMANS who spoke LATIN
@@alex.profi27 And what branch of languages do those people speak today: Latin. All branches of Vulgar Latin.
latino/latina sounds waaaay better. it rolls off the tongue better.
Latin x just sounds like a radio station ya mom listen too. 😐
(Is not bad using the term Latino, it's just an umbrella term.)
No one from Mexico to Argentina calls themselves, "Latinos" to identify their ethnicity.
Only a French woman can use "Latine" but not you because you are not Latins. You are Latin Americans.
www.latino-news.press
LATIN AND NOTHING MORE
No
This problem just happens in the USA, for the rest of us we don’t even care about it. You can use “Latine” just to refer to the nb community, not to us all. And, why try to make a word in introduce it to the Spanish just because some people in the USA (that are more gringos than latinos) suddenly felt offended by that??
So is hispanic not part of the latin culture? I thought i was hispanic / latina.. Like hispanic was a smaller part of the big latin culture.. No?
Guillen天使 well said
I belive so,because I'm brazilian,we are not hispanic, we were mainly colonized by The portuguese but we are latinos/latinx,we are in latin América and portuguese is a latin based language ...
@@gabiroal you said it right Latino is for all Latin rooted languages while Hispanic is for Spanish only. So we all are Latinos no matter if we speak português, francês, espanhol/español, ect...
Yessei Gabi gave the best explanation ever.
Basically Latinos are people from any country in Latin America whether they're from Mexico, Brazil, Peru, etc. Hispanic people are those that speak spanish so it wouldn't include countries like Brazil but it would include Spain. That's why some people identify w/ both Hispanic and Latinos because they fit into both categories.
The girl saying that the people from Spain are Hispanic got it all wrong. Of course people from Spain can discuss whether the language gets messed up! It’s Spanish!!! (I’m from Spain and I’m a linguist and she pissed me off, sorry)
Sandra J I’m Mexican Asian. She pissed me off too. The reason we can even call ourselves Latinos IS because of Spain. It’s so disrespectful of her to say that the people of Spain have no right to say something about their own language.
Skmdalnda
Guillen天使 The reason we can call ourselves Latin is because we were CONQUERED by Spain. Spain has no right to comment on the shared culture of colonized Latin American countries, only on the Spanish language.
@@abrilgallegos7674 In the same way, we call ourselves Latinos because Spain colonized us and we inherited their language, which is a Romance language that comes from Latin. we inherit part of their culture, religion and language. Of the rest we are only a group of countries with individual customs and dialects, different from each other. The Wayuú of Colombia to the Nahuatl of Mexico is totally different. I will really love to see this video and all this conversation about latinx but in Spanish. Completely in Spanish and lets see how they manage to introduce this word in a full spanish conversation without ruin our language 🤔
In one corner you have Latinos who appreciate their culture. In the other corner you have Americanized individuals who want to feel special

BTW, why they put gringos which don't know anything about Spanish, French, Portuguese or italian, in this conversation? It's ridiculous.
Spanish people ARE gringos lmao
@Callum Williams Bruh... You need to read... A LOT.
Being Latin-American it's NOT a race you can be latinamerican and also be white, black, brown, yellow, any colour, you can have Arabic, asian, indigenous, European, or African features. We are Latinamericans because we speak Spanish, french, Portuguese or Italian, because THOSE are the real Latin countries.
@Callum Williams Yeah, I know, but gringos are the people from United State, no from Europe, and Spain still a Latin country because it was part from the Roman Empire, all the countries which talk a romance language, is a Latin country (France, Rumania, Italy, Spain and Portugal), they colonized us, and force us to talk Spanish, Portuguese or french. Years later, when France had interested in Mexico, their embassador said: We are not enemies, we are brother because you are Latinos same at us.
That's why we add the: "Americano" in Latino Americano. Because we are the Latinos in America.
We are Latinos for our Greco-Roman heritage.
@Callum Williams of course you don't. 😂😂😂😂😂
I am Dominicano 🇩🇴 y coño a mi no me importa
Right !! A mi no me importa tampoco soy Dominicana period!
>Latinoamérica tiene mucha pobreza y corrupción ¡Rápido! ¡Den ideas para ayudar a la gente latina!
-La gente que vive en una burbuja: Lo tengo, ¡Latinx!
-Los woke de internet: ¡UNA GENIALIDAD!
I thought Latinx was the terminator version of Latin. 😂
A lot of ppl have been using Latiné as an alternative that is easier to pronounce and more accessible. Using an 'e' is also easier to insert into gendered words.
Yo prefiero latine, creo que suena mejor que latinx
I like latinè it fits more into the spanish tongue. Latinx sounds much foreign and the X sounds is not really prominent in the language.
Latine suena como letrina I guess that's what the one who came up with this garbage had in his head... Shit or to better say it mierda
@@espartacos1 lol
"Latiné" means "I spoke Latin". Please call off the crusade.
The Spanish language is beautiful and doesn't need changing. I feel that these labels (Latinx & hispanix) are totally bs and need to be dismantled.
Is it surprising that all of the people who chose LATINX don't speak Spanish but people who just say Latino don't ?
The virgin latinx: noooooo, Latinx is the best word, I'm latinx, latinx
The Chad Latinoamérica: silencio minoria, viva Latinoamérica
So is this really about Latinos or gays?two completely separate conversations
gotta love white people trying to tell us latinos how we should call ourselves, really "inclusive" and letting our community express ourselves
I’m glad to see the comment section is full of people with common sense.
It’s not hard to use Latinx if someone asks you to refer to them as Latinx. BUT, that’s not what these angry social justice warriors want. They want everyone to use it by force. Yeah, no. I’m half Mexican, I’m going to continue to call myself Latino because that is what I identify as. We can all collectively come together and be inclusive WITHOUT having to change the Spanish language. Period.
6:02 “why is Spain fighting it in the first place? Cause their Hispanic. That’s different conversation. Their not Latin”
Thats true, Spain is European.
Spain, Italy, France, Romania, Portugal etc are all Latin. Wtf is she taking about? They are the original Latins.
@@user-mz6lw2qk2b So what? Its called Latin America just as people from the US claim to be Americans as if they were the entire continent when they're not. These countries you mentioned WERE the original Latins, but if you call a Spaniard Latin they wouldn't agree, nowadays Latin America is considered the Hispanic (Spanish speaking countries) in the American continent, as Hispanic's in general include Spain that is in the European continent. Its not what "the original thing was" hundreds of years ago, its what is considered now as latin and latino.
@@user-mz6lw2qk2b no french, italian or Portuguese person will say they're a latino. They're not part of latin america, that's why they aren't considered.
@@user-mz6lw2qk2b in this case, Spain, Italy, France, Romania, Portugal, etc are Europeans that branched off from the Romans after the collapse of the empire.
People living in south america and the caribbean tend to be a mix of Spaniard/Portugese, native americans and Africans.
As for the referenced quote, it's a little dumb. Spaniards speak Spanish so they absolutely have an opinion on what changes their languages undergoes. I know some of the people are EXTRA woke and one even talks about "decolonizing" themselves (as though they can somehow erase their Spanish roots lmao) but it just goes to show how bias latinos living in the USA are when it comes to these conversations.
As an American, not of Latin/Spanish descent, I also don’t like the term “indigenous” used unless you know for a FACT that you have Native American heritage. Saying indigenous like that is the same as a white American going “I’m 1/24 Cherokee”
It's a problem for them, but not for us Latin people.
Steven Crowder brought me here 🙃 I love how the left is eating itself 🤭
Bro this is such an American POV. This conversation is not happening in any Latin American country
