Hey Drew! 12 years later they are still making tutorials on this......... It reminded me of the 1st time I saw this tech and had to go watch it again. I swear yours is the best vid I have ever seen on Elmer's crackle and have made many successful projects following it. Hope your living your best life!
I tried this today on a canvas and it worked!!!! I painted many colors on the canvas (left it over night) then painted elmer's glue all over it! After 30 minutes, I painted white paint over the glue and quickly saw results, but the real magic happened under the hair dyer. I loved the look, and it resembled the crackle nail polish a lot. Thank you for this video!
I wish I had found out about elmers glue sooner. I bought the $12 jar of Valspar crackle glaze and it worked well on one project but didnt work for another project. The first project was using an acylic base paint on wood, then the crackle glaze, and then a layer of latex paint. The first time i used the glaze it barely made any cracks. I had to reapply the crackle glaze thicker the 2nd time. So the thickness of the crackle glaZe/glue is essential to what kind of cracks you will get. The next project was a large gessoed canvas with an acrylic paint base. After 2layers of the crackle glaze, i used spray paint. I was only able to achieve a small 1" patch of cracks on a 20"x30" canvas. I am not sure why it didn't work but I think it was related to thickness and the spray paint. The canvas texture may alter how the glaze lays on the canvas. Even with 2coats of crackle glaze, I noticed that the glaze didn't lay well on the canvas unless i just poured it onto the canvas. With spray paint it may dry up sooner and start forming cracks but you usually end up having to layer it to get an even finish, so you may inadvertently spray over potential cracks. I'm not sure since i didn't see any cracks forming while I was spraying. Another theory I have is that maybe spray paint will crackle better while the glaze layer is still wet as that one patch may mot have completely dried when I applied the spray paint. I won't be buying the valspar glaze again if the elmers glue method works. Luckily, it was only a test and not the finished painting. So always test to make sure the products give you the desired effect before trying it on your final product. I'll try elmers glue and see if spray paint will work. I'm not too hopeful but glue is cheap and worth a try.
LOVE the visual presentation of this technique !!! I can read instructions all day long but not learn anything...however this awesome presentation was a winner !!!! Thank you Drew Scott I am now a dedicated subscriber to your channel
SUPER AWESOME! Just received an old frame from a friend....looks like I got a wknd project. Can't wait to try this technique! Thanx so much for sharing!
Thanks alot for sharing this tutorial Drew, very helpful. Don't worry about ever doing a tutorial, no matter how many others are on youtube. I didn't know about this technique so I've never looked it up and the only reason I now know about it is I stopped by your channel to see what new video's you had. Love your channel...you are very talented.
In the old days, we'd add the crackle surface, then rub artist oil into the small cracks. We had to keep rubbing to remove all the oil except what was in the cracks. This allowed us to put antique crackle surfaces over posters and prints.
Thanks so much for sharing!!! What a very inexpensive way to do this! I went out and bought crackle paint and I will not buy any more after this! The company that owns Elmers is gonna love me!
omg!! I am a fan of yours forever! i hate these on here who do the 30-45min videos and use the most expensive products out there..i am single on a budget and can't tell u how pleased I am to have found you and your simple instructions and am ready to get started..you have a new fan! for life...stay tuned for tha next project..LOL
Thank you so much for doing this video. I wanted to learn this technique and looked up on TH-cam howto create crackle paint finish...and there you were. You made this a very easy process. I'm going to practice today.
The base coat doesn't have to be dark. You use what ever color you want to see in the cracks. Of course dark colors show up more but two light colors will work, the effect will just be more subtle. It will crackle by air drying it just takes longer and once the paint {and glue} has dried the crackle will not rub off.
Hey! I watched this and did it. I used the off brand glue I had so I think it did not come out so great....but I tried and I gave you a shout out in the video on my channel. I just started a channel, but I have been watching you for a long time. You are so clear and so easy to understand! Love your work!
Thanks, Drew! This was exactly what I was hoping to find. I just scored a couple treasures at an auction and was trying to figure out something to do with them! Anyway, your video is very much appreciated! :D
you are awesome!!! I came to your channel though loganscraftymomma... I'm sure going to try this. I live in Spain so we dont have Elmers glue here, but I'll give it a try with a ordinary school glue. Love your work and you are very easy to understand. Hugs
@flippingpages the crackle paint by tim holtz cracks on its own. it comes in the same colors as his distress ink. and the jars are super small. the elmer's glue technique is if yo dont have the crackle paint it is cheaper and you can buy several bottles for your dresser. Hope this helps you. good luck with your dresser
@flippingpages the crackle paint crack on its own. no heating. you just paint it on and let it dry. its like $4 for a tiny jar. if you are doing a dresser so the same thing with the elmers as Drew. it will be cheaper. there is also crackle medium that you can get in the store. you would do the same thing as drew did only instead of the glue you will use the medium . hope this helps you. good luck with your dresser
LOVE THIS!!! 1 question though, can I use spray paint as my base layer? Or would it make no difference? I'm working on a crib and had gotten some Martha Stewart crud that is too think for what I'm trying to do but this is PERFECT and so much cheaper!
What an Awesome technique...thanks Drew, I would really love to try this on a Dia De Los Muertos project...(skulls) Congrats on your Prima shows...that's great! :)
and...Drew do u have to use the craft paint..could u use regular white paint like if I were doing a table maybe??thanks or any posters who have did this project I am open to your comments thank you ahead of time for your help and suggestions!
was wondering Drew if u could get the same effects wt elmers wood glue?lol I am out of reg elmers but have a butt load of elmers wood glue..will it work also??thanks for a reply..love your videos!!
Ive been trying this method numerous ways and CANNOT get it to work like it does in these tutorials! What I want is the all over spaced out cracks just like in this video but when I do it, I get real close and thin cracks that seem to reflect the direction my paint strokes of the glue. Ive tried acrylic and latex, heavy and light glue, painting the glue and paint with normal brushes and sponge brushes, tried short and long drying times of the glue before applying paint. What am I missing??
drew -posters I saw one poster stated she was wanting to do a trunk well I am wanting to do my grmothers dearly treasured (to me_)made before the 1800's gossip bench phone table-I had it refinished yrs ago in a stain but looks poorly now and it will always always stay n the family!i have been redoing home and was thinkn of doin my gossip bench n this crackle is there anything special I need to do or special paint??my reall ???I did a try on board it works great drew!thanks so much!
Will this work on vinyl? And is it a good idea to seal with varnish? I'm painting a figure that I've already put an acrylic metallic basecoat on. I've been looking for a way to paint a "cracked" look on top with another metallic paint on top.
me too!what I am wanting to know since I am doing a larger piece and a treasured piece of history of my family and really don't want to mess it up!please help me..thanks

You used the hair dryer to dry the white paint?

Did it work with spray paint?
Hi Drew, this is fantastic! I love how you can see the cracks appear - as if by magic - as you dry the paint. Thank you for a great video. 🙂❤👋🇦🇨

Ok Drew I have never seen this technique before. This is a way cool and inexpensive technique. My favorite.
Thank you! I have been trying to achieve a crackle paint finish for weeks and thanks to you I have finally done it!

I love this! I am going to try it today! Thanks for showing us how to do it!
i find this very neat. i love this techinque. i have so much of that glue around the house for my little girl. tfs
Thanks Drew.....Your videos are very helpful to me.
This box is gorgeous! I saw it on your blog. Thanks for the tutorial on the technique! ---leslie
that is awesome little guy. i have several frames i'm redoing and this is a great technique.
This is so easy and so cool! Thanks for sharing!
Turned out great, love it
Great job Drew..I may try this on my Harry Potter book for my grandson.I;love all your mini book also. Have a great day .
Thank__you. This saved me 180 years of aging some furniture
Ha ha he said "heat your Box" funny! great video thanks..
That is sooo neat! I am going to try some picture frames I have sitting around! YAY!! :) Thanks for an inexpensive idea!! :)
LOVE this tutorial!!! At least I get to see it in real time!!!!! THANKS a lot for sharing ((:
Omg is Lone Fox !!!! How neat I recognize that voice 😻❤️💓🥰💜
Don't use the heat gun and you won't get the bubbles. Let the glue/paint naturally dry on it's own.
Water down any wood glue, works perfect!
Awesome way to crackle! Never seen this method! TFS
Brigitte
Best crackle paint video yet! (And I’ve seen lots)
I love this technique..I did a vid on it last week, myself.

This is awesome cool. I have to try this technique. This seems to be easier. TFS and God Bless.
Does the hair dryer produce a different effect rather than slow air drying?
Great idea, Drew. I had never heard of creating crackle that way.
Do you need to heat set it, or can it dry on it's own and still crackle?
That’s beautiful!
@Isaley87 you can use any kind of glue, school glue is great !
wonderful..
the white paint you used, on top can any brand of paint use it?
Very nice and simple 😀
You use a lot of technique on your box. Good to spend a lot of time working on your box.
Love this technique! Can't wait to use it :)
LOVE THIS!!!

Great Video, best one on UT. Thanks.
Great idea! Do I have to use a heat gun or will it still crackle on its own as it dries? Thank you
Im so gonna try this today! Very cool! TFS!
What an Awesome technique...thanks Drew, I would really love to try this on a Dia De Los Muertos project...(skulls) Congrats on your Prima shows...that's great! :)
Does it matter how many brush strokes you make since a number of the videos say do as few brush strokes of the glue or paint is best? Good video
Loved your video!!
perfect! I have a stand I want to be teal with crackle and red showing underneath. I will try this and seal it :)
this is cool thank you i had never heard of this!
I've never seen that before, tfs, it's very cool. :)
Great demo! thanks!
Video is grate I love it, But there is lots of question. Are both base paint and top paint have to be acrylic? Regards
thank you! great, simple technique!
Can you use a hairdryer to dry and does the drying increase the crackle versus just letting it air dry?
it is a cheap hairdryer
This is amazing!!
Do you think I could do this with spray paint? Make it go faster?
You are AMAZING!
I did a whole Ford Falcon Ranchero like this years ago.
Great tutorial. Thanks!
Thank you! I really want to try this! Great video! :-)
awesome, easy to follow!
thanks that answered my ?? rather quickly! now can u also tell me if u can use any type paint with this technique??thank you
and...Drew do u have to use the craft paint..could u use regular white paint like if I were doing a table maybe??thanks or any posters who have did this project I am open to your comments thank you ahead of time for your help and suggestions!
Awesome. Thanks for sharing

Try crackle glaze.
drew -posters I saw one poster stated she was wanting to do a trunk well I am wanting to do my grmothers dearly treasured (to me_)made before the 1800's gossip bench phone table-I had it refinished yrs ago in a stain but looks poorly now and it will always always stay n the family!i have been redoing home and was thinkn of doin my gossip bench n this crackle is there anything special I need to do or special paint??my reall ???I did a try on board it works great drew!thanks so much!
being that you're using school glue, do you have to worry about it easily peeling up?
will it work by air drying it too?
Great. Thanks for sharing
Will this work on vinyl? And is it a good idea to seal with varnish? I'm painting a figure that I've already put an acrylic metallic basecoat on. I've been looking for a way to paint a "cracked" look on top with another metallic paint on top.
thank you ,that;s what i was looking for
After finishing the crackle, does it need to get sealed before painting a design on the project? Thank you
Will it crackle by air drying? Thanks for sharing
me too!what I am wanting to know since I am doing a larger piece and a treasured piece of history of my family and really don't want to mess it up!please help me..thanks
Very nice Technique, but Tmika on Scrapdaworld on here shown us how to do this last week, so you know...
Now have you tried it without heating it and letting it dry on its own?
Came out really nice bye for now Eileen tfs
This is a cheap easy way! (and here I went and bought a "crackle paint" LOL Either way is good tho, two different effects really. :D TFS
So cool, thanks for ideals
Were did you get the box it's sooooooo cute!!! I want one lol
Can this technique be used on any surface? Even a smoother/slicker surface?
would this work on kitchen cabinets could you clear coat it after or would it not work?
Thanks!!!!
Is the paint a water based paint (the white) or oil or ?
@iraj94 I can't get that glue too...I'm from Italy! Is that a vinyl glue?
Thanks so much for sharing! :)
Great effect! Does the bottom coat of paint (the black color) need to be completely dry before you put the glue on?
Judi Anson Does the top paint have to be a certain type? ( semi gloss, gloss flat) does it matter?
yes!
can you use normal wall paint? or does it have to be acrylic paint??
shannon martinez I think wall paint is acrylic based. Read the label.
I'd like to do a crackle-finish on your box!
