    I was about 3-4 at the time in spain in a hotel, I was running towards the elevator the doors opened and I bumped into a pair of legs. I looked up young and stupid not knowing who he was, and looked back at my dad shaking like mad, he was star struck, because I bumped into George Best's legs, and he said sorry to me.
    -He was a legend :)

    He was a boyhood hero of mine and lovely when he was sober, as is the case here. I watched the Wogan interview live, when he was drunk, and it made the boyhood fan in me cry.

    I am a woman, I was born in the same era as George Best and had no interest in football until I saw him! but, having admitted that, I watched him over the years and marvelled at his football skills, he was truly a legend, a genius who was sadly also an alcoholic, If you read his autobiography you will see that a lot of things were against him,the pressures of being a "celebrity" at such a young age coupled with the fact that he was brought up with a mother who had the same problem, contributed.

      @lynnsmithershubberd and what help could you have given george at age 25, he was still the best in the world especialy in that year 1971 he was just magic all through that full year at 25. But he loved the night clubs by that time and was in them alot. Maybe 4 or 5 nights a week. And the drinking was getting heavier. He said on a show one night that he loved the nightclub atmosphere and there was plenty of great clubs even back then, and he was spending alot of time in the best clubs in london and the uk. Like tramp, stringfellows, the lime light club, and plenty more. But in london these clubs were the best in the whole of britain, but also dear as well and alot were a members only club like tramp. I know some one who was in tramp one night as a member could sign you in and he said it was just brilliant. The way it was laid out it had a dinning room for eating in, then it had a huge bar and lounge with the best dance floor he had seen and disco lights with the way they were designend and fitted all around it. But if you go make sure you take at least a thousand pound he said. And that was in 1976 and he said there was so many famous people there i couldnt believe it, i wanted a few autographs off at least 4 that i saw but then i thought as me and my friend were drinking that thats the reason they come here and to a members club was to get peace and enjoy themselfs. I knew george was a huge tramp member and funny enough he was staying in london as he was playing with fulham, and i looked around the whole place but i never saw him. My friend said to me you dont need to look around far to see george best, i said why? He said becouse all you look for is a big crowd? Becouse so many people want to talk to him, famous and unfamous. I kid you not. He will probably be in an old pub some where. He likes drinking in old pubs as well, he enjoys the peace and how quiet a pub can be. Becouse night clubs although we all love them they can be very loud with music, infact they are loud with music you cant really hear people talk to you. But george wasnt daft he just kind of drank more becouse the team were getting bad, and it was killing him. So to help george at that age and time then you would need to change most of the team he was in at man utd, at least 5 were past it alone. But it would of took at least 2 to 3 years to be the great team they were or close to it. And george i think wouldnt want to wait that long, getting hammerd nearly twice a month and it did happen and he left for nearly a year, and thats a long time to be out the game especialy as he lived in tramp. He came back a stone over weight and he had lost it. No he still had that magic touch and passing was brillint two feet, but he couldnt beat players becouse he had lost his pace to get away from them so they would just catch him after 5 yards and tackle him and that would be it, he would lose the ball. It just wasnt george best anymore, and that big beard he always had on and over weight, he looked bad for a footballer, and its insane to think 4 years before it he won european player of the year and english player of the year and english top goal scorer and british player of the year and irish player of the year, won the european cup all in 1 season. Thats brilliant. And hasnt been done again. So in 1968 that was european, british, english and irish player of the year, and english top goal scorer of the year. And the next season he won sportsman of the year award then in 1971 2 years later he came second for sportsman of the year award finishing behind princess magraet who won it for show jumping ? But what a feat in 1968 to win all that, seemingly in the vote for the english player of the year george won it by some margin, with over 60 points clear of the player behind him. So that showed the respect the players had for george to win it by at least 60 points, wich means its really 60 players at least that picked george, and with 24 teams in the leauge he must have been picked over 120 times, well over.

    there's a lot of comments condemning Best as a alcholic loser, but nobody truly knows what went on in his life, particular his early life, never judge anyone unless you have the full context of their situation, i don't believe the "disease" theory behind alcoholism, i believe something happened in his life he never spoke of, and his alcoholism was purely to numb this. Its highly likely he was hiding a secret from his past, something he was ashamed of, something he wanted to numb himself to.

      He was painfully shy. You can see it in his interviews. It's one of the reasons he drunk, he hated being in the glare, having to talk to strangers, etc. It was so much easier once he had a few drinks in him.

      Oil norbory its not like that. I saw george best for 2 seasons and what he did in those 2 alone was just sheer natural genius, and i knew from 2 years alone he was the greatest player ever. A mean look at those goals he scored in the whole of 1971 alone. No other player could do what he did. In 1971 he scored at least 6 brilliant goals against gordon banks and made him look an idiot. Gordon admitted it himself. He said "in one game george got the ball of the defender so i came rushing out to block george and he went to go to my right then shoot so as i went down he then moves over to my left and walked past me and rolled it over the line, i was made to look an idiot out there. But in my heart i thought that was absolutely fantastic that was, but i couldnt show it i couldnt go up to him and tap him on the shoulder and say that was brilliant george" but gordon banks was a pure gentle man as well, and he loved george. I thinck gordon thought george was better than pele. And so did most of that england team.

    I've read so many terribly naïve comments referring to his 'sobriety' during this interview and what a shame it was that he couldn't maintain it.
    The reality is that he had probably already consumed enough alcohol beforehand to have 'floored' half a dozen grown men - but a chronic alcoholic develops such a tolerance to this poison that they rarely 'appear' drunk and continue to function at an astonishingly capable level. The liver is remarkably resilient and the only human organ able to regenerate itself.
    It's when the alcoholic becomes slurred, incoherent and ataxic that they are knocking at death's door.

    • @toprightchannel3080
      @toprightchannel3080 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that's a very solid assessment. I feel that with a lot of alcoholics you don't see them out of the house in public when they're getting really hammered. Even with the infamous Wogan interview you can tell he's drunk but the guy seems to be totally in control.

      SB M, yes when he came on he sounded out of breath wich i found strange. Becouse believe it or not after george came of a bender he would work out in the gym for hours and spend weeks in health farms. And he would run on the treadmills there. He lenjoyed running outside more and most sports men do becouse its a better run seeing being outside. But when people spot george they always want to stop him or run with him for a an autograph, thats no use. And the older he gets he cant out run them and he has to stop now and then wich is worse when they see you. And george was a great guy but going for a run outside would drive me mad if i was him. And those health farms cost a furtune to stay in for a weekend never mind 2 or 3 weeks. Georges ex wife alex said "its ok for a weekend but george wanted to stay for weeks and after about 3 days theres not much to do except sit around a huge swimming pool drincking cups of hot water. I would say george lets go home this is driving me mad then i thought george wanted to spend 2 weeks there drincking hot water just to give his liver a rest becouse they say hot waters good for the liver. Even george got bored but he wouldnt admitt it. I could tell becouse he would say a might leave in another 6 days and cut it short by 3 days. They werent happy when george asked for his 3 days money back for two of us. Becouse george went there for years, years before i mett him and he always paid upfront for a 14 day stay, and sometimes he was going 4 times a year at least. Depending on his work commitments, like if he flew off to dubai for 2 weeks coaching young boys and do a bit of chat about his playing days in theatres and was paid alot of money believe me. And he wasnt drincking he would come back looking great, well tannend, hair shinning, so he basicly looked better than any health farm made him look and he got paid alot of money instead of paying out alot of money. Dont get me wrong sometimes george when he went into the health farm would look terrible, then after 2 weeks of being in steam rooms and saunas and it had a jaccuzi the size of a swimming pool, about 18 yards wide and 30 yards long, george would come out looking so much better and sometimes with no beard on, but i knew deep down it couldnt keep going on like this as something had to give, george said he didnt see himself as an alcoholic becouse he didnt drinck every day. I thought you must be joking. Becouse denial is the worse thing an adddict can do. Even when he has addmitted plenty of times he is an alcoholic years before it and needed help even on live tv, but i was to young to watch it or take any notice. But my mum and dad watched him say it at least twice on tv chat shows in 1981 when i was aged just 10"

    That must have been the longest walk onto a chat show ever lol. But here george seems out of breath wich suprised me becouse he had always kept in shape by training hard after a week long bender and work out in health farms at 3 grand for 3 days? And george stayed for 2 weeks at a time. That doesnt sound like a down and out to me! He always had money, his name alone seen to that. My friend mett him at glasgow airport about 2 years after this interview and said he was a pure gentle man to speak to. Best had stayed in scotland for 6 days doing book signings in shops in glasgow and edinburgh to promote his new book, plus he did a few tv interviews in glasgow and other stuff. George said he was catching a flight back to london where he stayed. My friend said he was clean shaving but it was clear drink was catching up with him after years of drinking. My friend said to his partner "thats george best over there isnt it? With out his beard" and she said "it looks like him and theres other people around him? Yes its him go and say hello" my friend said as i aproached him he seemend a bit wary becouse of idiots have hit him at least a thousand times since he became famous and there was two huge men at least 6ft3" just behind him. They were his minders and it was so sad he had to have them with him. But when he seen my pen and paper for my autograph he was more at ease becouse i didnt know george was very wary when strangers aproached him as they always had the first chance at him becouse of who he is he has to just stand and see what happens and alot of the time hes been violently attacked by guys with beer pots and alsorts as i found out when i read his new book it was heartbreaking some of it i nearly cried. I had no idea george got that much hassle that would push any one to drink and he said he it would never change. Becouse of who he was. George had guys that could and would kill you if he asked them too after a fight. And alot of clowns didnt realise that, and how close it nearly happend to one guy who smashed open georges head with one of those old thick beer pots, he could have killed george and he left a 4 inch scar above his eye that was clear to see for life. George ended up smashing the guys head of the ground as the fight ended up on the street but george was at the bar phoning for a curry to be deliverd and he could see 4 or 5 men in the pub mirror behind him all drunk and having a debate about liverpool, george heard one of the men saying "fuck look who it is...its george best, fuck me imagine him walking in here, the others went quiet but talked in hushed tones? They were clearly liverpool fans and younger than george by at least 10 years. George didnt like this one bit and just was about to put the phone down then he felt his head getting smashed and he felt his legs giving way but some thing told him inside 'stay on your feet dont go down you cant or they might finish you' then georges old instinct kicked in and he grabbed the guy and they fought out side and george was sober and was killing him till the police stopped it. George was arrested for assault? I kid you not. And the other man wasnt charged! A guess they were all liverpool fans then the police as well? George joked in his book. But two days later two men went to see george and told him they KNEW who did it and do you want HIM dealt with mr best? Just say the word and its done. They gave george the guys name and were he worked and stayed? He was a road digger with his local council. George said he was very tempted and asked and what way will he be dealt with? The men said "o with construction workers accidents happen all the time, as in he could fall head first of a scaffolding about 5 levels high, easy" george said thanks boys but just let it go for now. And that was that! But thats how easy it can get you killed taking a liberty just becouse there drunk and want to smash a pint into a mans head. But becouse george was 36 at the time they thought he was a has been? The guy went out his way to find george and begged him it would never happen again and said sorry at least a hundred times. George said he sounded terriffied out his mind, a wonder what brought that on? A wonder if that guy knew how lucky he was to still be alive a week later? A believe he did know but was told to go and see george and say a million sorrys. George said at the end of the day i know i did the right thing becouse if i didnt then where does it all end and i could get into serious trouble although i knew these men were proffesionals and i was told this has or will have nothing to do with you george, you wont even know what happend really. It was then george knew nothing would happen strait away and could take months becouse it would then look a bit obvious. But george did put up with alot of hassle, in one night out he was involved in two fights in 3 hours then 1 again the very next day. And to a guy that gave millions of people so much enjoyment for years and years. I had no idea george went through it as bad as what i read, it was tragic. And why he went to america in 1976 becouse he wasnt known. How sad is that!!!!

    Tavy@ george best wasnt just the greatest footballer ever he was also the greatest entertainer on tv at that time in the 1960s and even mid 70s with fulham and rodney marsh. They were in the old second division at the time fulham but becouse of all the hype and buzz that best, marsh and bobby moore were making there debut match of the day played that game. And best and co. Didnt let us down. It was great to watch. But best between 1966 to 1972 was unstoppable. He made pele look boring. I have never saw a player excite and make a crowd laugh the way george best did. With his tricks, putting the ball throw a players legs 3 times, and he took some hard over the top ilegal tackling. In one game i howled with laughter when he took of hes top and tried to give it to the defender who was holding him all day, as if he was saying here just take it, just ask me for it and al give u it instead of pulling it all day. lol becouse he was badly abused back then. I dont know if referees were just to scared to do anything. But best played in the hardest leauge against the hardest players ever in the britain and still never got injured. And just wouldnt go down for any one. For me that makes him the greatest ever. No shin pads, heavy old wet leather balls, muddy pototatoe parks that cows wouldnt walk on. From maybe 1967 to 1972 if best was on match of the day that saturday night hundreds of thousands if not millions of men, boys, woman, girls would stay in to watch him. !!!!!!!!!!! R.I.P GEORGE

    George was a womaniser and a drunk, I'll admit to that. But in footballing terms he had the magic in his boots to turn a game and score goals from anywhere on the pitch leaving defenders bewildered as to how to stop him. I am not a United fan but I was mesmorised when he took the field. If George were playing today he would still be up there as the BEST. This is just my opinion and I was privileged to have known and played against him.

      @youngrichie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jay pea I you think George never touched anything else other than booze you are sadly mistaken....Maradona gave an average Napoli side their first title in years. And single handedly took a poor Argentina side into WC winners. Best was fortunate to be in a great Utd side that won the CL.... Because that's all he won as a player. He was finished by 23 years old.
