There's no reason why any Evertonian should dislike Bill Shankley. it's reds who should feel embarrassed by their soulless husk of a club when they read his autobiography and he writes in such glowing terms at how welcome he was made to feel at Goodison Park when attending games with Billy Dean, while he was treated like dirt at Anfield, to the extent he stopped going. What wasn't in the biography, and only came to light recently, was that Shanks even threw his name in the hat for the then-vacant Everton job in 1976.

Paisley was another great man but very under played in his approach as opposed to Shankly. No doubt Shankly retired too early..he said so himself. He said to ron yates about Bobby Moore.." aye you can run rings around him dont worry lad .go out there and have a good game." @TheToolnut He did, x2 European cups back to back. Multiple league cups, FA Cup eluded him though. He also managed hartlepool and Shanks said he turned a pigsty into a football club there. He did well at Derby too, beat Liverpool, Leeds, Man City to the 1st division title! Was cheated in the European Cup semi final too! Also he managed Brighton who were struggling and in debt, he liked the club and hated Leeds, he went to Leeds knowing that Brighton could sue Leeds, which is what happened, Brighton were financially secure, Clough split the Leeds camp and Leeds had to pay Clough off....Clough was then financially secure! Knew what he was doing.

I know it's a difficult term for younger football fans to come to terms with, but believe me, I'm 62 and all Brits called it 'soccer' when we were young - it derives from Association Football, and was used at the same time as 'rugger', short for Rugby Football. Check out any magazines or books from the 1966 World Cup.... British players, managers and fans all referred to it as 'soccer' and that's why Americans use the term today - the game was sold by the football world to America as 'soccer' at a time when they were establishing their league, and bringing in players like George Best, Pele, Beckenbauer, etc. Bill Shankly would have called it soccer, and that's why the interviewer was using the term. The Americans only use a phrase we invented.... for my part, I absolutely hate the term 'footy', but there we go.

mark kinrade I didn’t say all Brits call it soccer; I said it used to be called soccer by all Brits. We invented the word and if you look back at any magazines from the 1960s you’ll find that even established internationals like Pele, Bobby Charlton and Jimmy Greaves refer to it as soccer. I don’t really care either way to be honest - life’s far too short to deal with the multitude of pedants TH-cam and social media throws up, but I do get fed up of the superior and insulting British attitude (and I’m a Brit who played amateur football/soccer to a decent level from 1967 to 1988) towards Americans when they call it soccer.... that’s how WE marketed the game to them in the first place. In schoolyards - IN THE 1960s - it was known, for short, as soccer or rugger. Soccer was derived from the words ‘Association Football’ because - then - rugby was known as ‘Rugby Football’. I’m not saying it’s right, wrong, hip, en pointe or trendy, but it’s the way it was and I get really pissed off by idiot know-it-all’s who probably weren’t born until the 1980s denying and pontificating on something they know nothing about. I wouldn’t use the word ‘forsooth’ today, but believe it or not it was once used by everyone. We used ‘soccer’ to differentiate from rugby football (there is now no need as everyone simply calls it rugby), the Americans use the word ‘soccer’ in the same way, to differentiate from American Football. It’s not a crime... they can call it whatever they want, and small-minded Brits should let them get on with it and keep their noses out. I hope that clears up things for you.

These greats all had their roots from Scottish working class families. Jock Stein, Matt Busby, Alex Ferguson and of course Bill Shankly. Probably the same could be said of many great English managers. The point can be made, that football then was a game for the people, which traditionally was a huge focal point in working class families throughout Britain. It wasn't played out for the millionaires, the celebrities, pay tv or the sponsors. In reflection it was an entirely different era, and those of us old enough are lucky to have the memories of those times.
