  • In the motherland of the Syro Malabar Catholic Church in Kerala, typically most Syro Malabar Catholic faithful do not need any written text to pray the Cheriya Opppisu, Office for the Dead. This is because there is great familiarity with the prayers and songs of the Office for the Dead especially in Malayalam. The parish usually has a cemetery somewhere on the premise. It is then easy for the Syro Malabar faithful to walk with the priest to the cemetery and have the Office for the Dead prayed at the grave of their loved ones after the Holy Qurbana. In the places where the Syro Malabar faithful have migrated especially in the St. Thomas Syro Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago, the cemetery is not nearby the parish. If the intention of the Holy Qurbana is a memorial one, the priest will usually pray the Office for the Dead at the Church itself.
Although the situation is different in the locations of the Syro Malabar migrant dioceses, there should be a continued practice of the Catholic faith especially in praying for the dead. It is a goal that by preserving some of the original tunes, there can be more familiarity with the Office for the Dead in the English language.
Please find the PDF of the Office for Dead in English printed within the St. Thomas Syro Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago:

The Office for the Dead that is being prayed in this video is for the repose of John and Annakutty Kunthara at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston, Texas. A special thanks to the Kunthara family (Hendry, Cindu, Maryn, Treasa, and Abraham) for allowing this Office for the Dead to be filmed. This audio of this Office for the Dead in English puts forward the voices of Kavitha Joseph, Christy Thomas, Alex Sabu, Geo Roncy, Daniel Chakkramakkil and Fr. Rajeev Valiyaveettil.
