One of the main things that’s so great about this show is that Jack and Rich always talk about the playable character as themselves. As far as they’re concerned Your character isn’t reloading, you’re reloading. They truly get immersed into every game whether they like it or not
My thoughts exactly on this game. Definitely worth a buy for the fun I had early on; but it doesn't live up to its potential and you'll get over it relatively quickly. Some issues that they didn't mention: - You go on missions through an interface called the galactic campaign map, which is a map of sectors of planets against the 3 opposing races. When beating a sector, you advance to the next against that race, and eventually against their homeworld. Everyone playing helldivers advances the progress in these sectors. When you defeat a race at their homeworld, *that race can no longer be fought against until the war is over*. The war is over when all 3 races are dead, and a new war starts a day after that, with one race being introduced per day. The problem that this causes is that usually everyone will fight against the bugs first (starship troopers heh), and defeat them a week into the new war. It then usually takes a few weeks after that (a month or two sometimes!) for the remaining races to be defeated. Effectively this means that an entire race of content is locked away most of the time. - Aiming using a mouse is very awkward, and intentionally so to "balance" mouse and keyboard versus controller. Instead of functioning the obvious way (for example as in Alien Swarm), you don't have a crosshair until you click and hold the aim button (right click). This would have been fine if it remembered your crosshair position, but here's the issue: when you stop aiming, your crosshair position is reset to the location of your character. It's incredibly jarring, but hopefully the developers will change it.
Helldivers actually seems like a satire of Halo's UNSC tyrannical rule as much as Starship Troopers (the movie). BTW, Starship Troopers the BOOK is amazing.
"would you like to know more?" I'm assuming the book has that line alot as I've heard it's kinda like WWZ where that was stories about the zombie war, and this is basically a field manual for a ficticious future war in a dictatorship.
@@sgtsnokeem1139 The book Starship Troopers has a very well thought out political society that is healthy and functional, without the subversive crap Verhoven inserted or the 90210 nonsense. It becomes more prescient with each passing year. WWZ, as well, is one of the best pieces of fiction to come out in two decades. I highly recommend the audiobook. Max Brook's predecessor, "The Zombie Survival Guide", is an excellent Y2K-inspired field manual with some "historical accounts" (fictionalized, of course) in the back of zombie attacks throughout history. But the real high-water mark of the zombie genre is the book WWZ. Evocative, spooky and memorable; it's worth your time, especially the audiobook. Read the book first, then listen to the unabridged audiobook. You will love it. And yes, I highly recommend Starship Troopers. The sci-fi setting and tech take a backseat to the political philosophy, which is spot on accurate and morally superior to the meandering social science crap western civilization labors under now. Hope you enjoy them both. :)
The few things I can say: There is an urban environment, although it is for sector defense missions only. There are faction bosses, and the war can be won/lost, eliminating a faction completely. But yeah, seeing more faction-oriented environments and extra objective variety would be nice.
Yeah. I have to reiterate. This Jack was fine. If this Jack always showed up, I'd never have a complaint. He dialed it back. He was understated. There was very little face cam, which was also nice. Solid video, would watch again. A++
what Jack meant to say is that the game is well optimized, and that it shows from it's ability to scale from a PC all the way down to a handheld console like the Vita.
Re: specular highlights due to Jack's baldness. You guys using a diffuser in front of that light? If not, then that would help. But, I'm sure most people don't pay it no nevermind.
I really wish they would clearly label their videos so I know which ones are actual review/discussions and which ones are just gameplay streaming. I'm really only interested in these review videos and I have to guess which they are based on the length of the video.
I think they should check out Earth Defense Force 2025 (or the updated version for PS4). A lot of things they said about this game reminded me of it, especially the ease with which you can accidentally murder your teammates. I wouldn't say it's as strategic, since you have unlimited ammunition, and the timing of reloads is more important than conserving your bullets, but I think it more than makes up for it in the stupid fun factor. (For added fun, take a drink every time someone says "Giant Insects", it will be very difficult to aim straight by the end of the first mission)
I would definitely go back and play this game this song didn't steal it from me the second digital man took off my PS4 and then cleaned I never owned it
about the review... thinking that all games should be played for decades to come, I believe is an error. should you consider the same an story driven game where each second of game is full of new things to do than a multiplayer game where everything you de all the time is the same?
The end game is defeating all three alien races and creating peace throughout the Galaxy. As a player, doing a helldive against each faction, beating each faction boss, and beating the top level arena battle against each faction is pretty much the end. As a criticism of the game, it kind of sucks when one faction is defeated, I cannot play against them until the entire war is over and the game resets. Seems an odd choice.
Yep I got about 20-30 hours in and almost or just over 20 levels in. Yeah you are right, like I got 18 hours in the first 3 days, and then I had to go back to life after that long weekend. And I lucked out starting right at the beginning of a war. I also recommend it.
yes, I watched them speak about people in multiplayer being to stupid to breath, much less contribute, so I asked if you can just skip that shit and should play alone
The modernized World War II Newsreels are Verhoeven-esque (FIGHT FOR DEMOCRACY TODAY!), not something to just be associated with Starship Troopers. Like how huge, industrial sets give James Cameron a boner, and aren't just in Aliens.
This video would've been worthless if they hadn't discussed the highlighted lacking of hair on Jack's skull. You might not have noticed it... But your brain did.
it sucks because I really like this show and I'd subscribe if they didn't swarm my inbox with twitch vods. i wish they made a separate channel for their vods, they don't get more than a few hundred views each anyway...
+atomheartother Don't all twitchers have vods right after their twitch live stream? And these guys only do twitch live stream 2 days a week, instead of everyday like many professional twitchers.
armoredp Yeah but uploading every single second of twitch stream means there's still a solid 6 or 7 videos I'll never watch clogging up my sub box, for every one video I will. It's spammy and caused me to unsubscribe a while back.
atomheartother I see what you mean. Yeah Rich and Jack aren't terribly good with streaming in one full stretch. I guess you could also just donate the money instead of subscribing, if you really want to contribute.
Who's here for the nostalgia for this show, the streams and this game seeing the new sequel out?
yeah i had to come back and watch this, it was one of the first pre rec videos i watched and i still love helldivers
I want to hear Jack and Rich chat about Helldivers 2. That will probably be my favorite commentary of the game thus far.
Jack's head was polished with Woodoo hide.
To distract Mike so Rich could cut corners when playing Space Cop.
That reference is so dense, there'e so many things going on in each frame...
this is the funniest comment i’ve read in a while.
(i’m tired of all of the reference comments, but this one was creative)
One of the main things that’s so great about this show is that Jack and Rich always talk about the playable character as themselves. As far as they’re concerned Your character isn’t reloading, you’re reloading. They truly get immersed into every game whether they like it or not
hope they’re trying the new one.
i like jack. i think he's charming. he reminds me of Dr. Hibbert with his occasional random laughter.
God I miss prerec id love to see their thoughts on helldivers 2
I freaking LOVE Helldivers. Watching Rich play it though takes it to a whole new level! :P
The Previously Recorded that came out after this not starting with Jack wearing a bald cap was the biggest missed opportunity
When a war ends you get a little cutscene, and 'Veteran' attire. There's also the 3 boss battles you can get now, one for each faction.
My thoughts exactly on this game. Definitely worth a buy for the fun I had early on; but it doesn't live up to its potential and you'll get over it relatively quickly.

This can't be Starship Troopers The Game without some kind of co-ed shower mission. "Press X to lather."
less than a minute in
Rich calls out the Jews.
getting comfy, this is going to be a good episode.
+Avraham Shekelstein Damn you Jews!
+Alistar Wormwood What's the difference between Jack and a canoe? A canoe tips.
PsychoDieter91 oy vey
A polarising filter can help with the glare
came back to this video after having played helldivers. it all checks out
Miss ya guys
We need to start a kickstarter for Jack and his bald caps.
+mechaheart they have a PO box.
SEND ALL YOU BALD CAPS TO JACK
+mechaheart Just put him in clown makeup!
rich, love your viewpoint. glad you get this platform.
I bet that stranger that Rich worked with extremely well was George Lucas.
Magos Nihilus: makes sense, mike has a hard time expressing his feelings to Rich outside of anonymously playing online with him 😭
Surprised you didn't mention the accidentally killing people with drop pods, which seemed to happen a lot to Rich early on, haha.

Got about 30 games on my PS4....Played this one the most. Wish they'd do more DLC.
Rich - "magazine"
Jack- "clip"
This is precisely what I would expect.
FOR DEMOCRACY!!!
+Graham Richardson
Indeed.
Yup.
Jack: spend the $7, go buy a big prosthetic forehead and wear it on your real head.
I thought these hacks gave up making videos, it's been so long since the last one.
A hacks job is never finished.
Only frauded.
They had to hack it up on Space Cop first!
Enjoyed review. Very detailed and informative. Keep it up!
The few things I can say: There is an urban environment, although it is for sector defense missions only. There are faction bosses, and the war can be won/lost, eliminating a faction completely. But yeah, seeing more faction-oriented environments and extra objective variety would be nice.
one of the best Jack performances in any PreRec
WHEN IS SPACE COP BACK IN STOCK!!!
The urban environments is an interesting idea. What I think the game could use as well is some wildlife, like a bunch of Metroid-style enemies.
The ending was really funny.
I didn't hate Jack in this.
I DIDN'T HATE JACK IN THIS.
Yeah. I have to reiterate. This Jack was fine. If this Jack always showed up, I'd never have a complaint. He dialed it back. He was understated. There was very little face cam, which was also nice. Solid video, would watch again. A++
+kwijung Dude, I think you just had an arc. Or it might be the setup before the fall. Either way, enjoy it while it lasts.
+kwijung Hey i was hating jack before it was cool
+kwijung
People hate Jack? I love jack.
+kwijung Not even a minute into it and there's a "wait for Jack to stop laughing" moment.
what Jack meant to say is that the game is well optimized, and that it shows from it's ability to scale from a PC all the way down to a handheld console like the Vita.
I agree with your review, but I'll add that this makes an excellent party game. You can do local multiplayer without needing PS accounts.
Being sent to die in a foreign war "for democracy"? This is the most realistic game ever
Nova Alcor was such a fucking beast...
Hey, Jack, use a polarizer filter on the lens and you'll knock down the bald head highlights significantly. 👍
Re: specular highlights due to Jack's baldness. You guys using a diffuser in front of that light? If not, then that would help. But, I'm sure most people don't pay it no nevermind.
I just now noticed the cleft in Jack's chin.
For the first 10 minutes, I was reading Jack's shirt as:
MID
WEST
ERTY
ER
You must gather your party before venturing forth.
I wonder if Rich Evans and Jack would enjoy the old Hunter: The Reckoning games.
Is this what news anchors talk about before the camera zooms in?
Rich, just switching to caps won´t change reality from haunting you, just let it go.
are you going to review undertale?
Helldivers is one of those ideal small games
So, this is alien swarm with better reinforced coop? And the coop in alien swarm was already pretty solid?
"Game could use some urban environments" they saw the future.
A 34 minute commercial started two minutes into this video. Damn TH-cam.
$20 for 20 hours? Novelty.
$80 for 1000 hours!
thanks Zack and Rick
It's all well looking out for scouts, but what about skosts?
OMG, It's SPACE COP!!!! And that guy who plays the... Smurf-like... side... character? I think?
you could hire a powder down person - support the economy
Am I not right in thinking Jack is the member of RLM who owns a gun? And yet he doesn't understand the difference between a clip and a magazine?
Desert, Forest, Volcanic, Snow, Urban
I really wish they would clearly label their videos so I know which ones are actual review/discussions and which ones are just gameplay streaming. I'm really only interested in these review videos and I have to guess which they are based on the length of the video.
Why don't some people like Jack ?
+Jack Melia He said a bunch of really racist stuff on Twitter, then deleted it.
+Jack Melia Because that guy acts more like the obnoxious douches from Channel Awesome.
+SV67943 Link?
+Doyle Harken Jack is never near as pretentious as some of those guys can be.
aidsmoby

I would definitely go back and play this game this song didn't steal it from me the second digital man took off my PS4 and then cleaned I never owned it
Jack needs to own his baldness and get his head waxed to be super shiny.
Rich looks baked... all of the time.
I would love a proper singleplayer game set in the Helldivers universe.
+Chernobylkinsman You can just play the entirety of the game solo. I did and I know I'm not the only one.
One person knows the difference between a clip and a magazine, the other does not.
I could use a shot of PreRec, to cure my derailing boredom.
How is Jack's dexcription of an "office job" different from "grinding"?
oh, good review btw
rich you got some bushy ass eyebrows and i love it
Jack that shirt is fantastic.
Good ep, made me buy the game 😬💥
I won't let Rich hurt a hair on Jack's heeeeeee......
Al... A hair on Jacks heal...
They should check out the even shorter Alien Swarm

It's space cop!
...thumbs up that opening...
"Bald people appear on camera." But should they Jack, is the question.
sounds like serious magicka in a scifi setting
THIS IS GETTING BETTER AND BETTER GOOD JOB JACK (AND RICH)
Is the bald guy Moby?
That fucking t-shirt is hilarious! Chi-City!
Is that the Perfect Dark font?
I have to say, this is one of the best games I've played in a long time. And it's great with SteamLink.
Make more.
Yep I got about 20-30 hours in and almost or just over 20 levels in. Yeah you are right, like I got 18 hours in the first 3 days, and then I had to go back to life after that long weekend. And I lucked out starting right at the beginning of a war. I also recommend it.
also, try magicka 2
Technically, unless every citizen votes on each bill, it's still a Republic, like the USA today, not a Democracy.
You spend a lot of time on youtube?
+Daric Not true. Voting for representatives is part of democracy.
+Daric Representative democracy, dude. lrn2politics
SwevenHannibal That's called a Republic. Lol.
Again, learn2politics. You don't know what you are talking about
you guys are great
so this is a singleplayer only game?
Did you watch the video?
yes, I watched them speak about people in multiplayer being to stupid to breath, much less contribute, so I asked if you can just skip that shit and should play alone
If I was told I can ask Jack only ONE Question it would have to be:
*"Jack, why are you laughing right now?"*
Starship troppers characters? this is fucking StarCraft
They were referring to the fascist satire.
The modernized World War II Newsreels are Verhoeven-esque (FIGHT FOR DEMOCRACY TODAY!), not something to just be associated with Starship Troopers. Like how huge, industrial sets give James Cameron a boner, and aren't just in Aliens.
+SV67943 Sure, but thematically, tonally and even art design for some enemies and character models, it's just straight up Starship Troopers.
Bang Arang Why not both?
Zerg, Terrans, Protoss
lol I was JUST playing this game with my friends earlier.
I'm glad that you friends to spend time with. Did you have fun playing the game?
Yes. I really like this game.
This video would've been worthless if they hadn't discussed the highlighted lacking of hair on Jack's skull.
You might not have noticed it... But your brain did.
For SCIENCE!
Lol "only 40 hours"
