      the live telecast was on ESPN, this is a tape-delayed broadcast from Sports Channel which NBC partly owned at the time

    Notre Dame suffered 3 gut-wrenching losses in 1990. I remember returning home as a kid from a Lehigh-Lafayette game I attended just in time to see PSU go on their final drive. Ugh! Notre Dame was loaded with talent in 1990 but played a brutally tough schedule (Michigan, Miami, Tennessee, PSU, Colorado) which cost them a real shot at the title. Had they beaten Colorado I think a 2 loss Irish team would have at least made a run at an undefeated Georgia Tech team in the polls. Not sure it would have been justified to split though. The Buffs lived a charmed life in 1990....

      The Stanford loss was brutal .. but they beat Miami, Michigan, and USC that year schedule was unreal

      @tuowl0564 Those are just excuses. Schedule has nothing to do with it. You had a month to prepare for Colorado and you STILL blew it. You were not the best team, clearly.

    What a classic game. Two legendary programs. Much on the line, great plays on offense and defense. Late FG to win it. Tremendous.

      Penn state capitalized when rocket went out.. Holtz didn’t know what to do it seemed as great as he was.. this was payback for the curb stomping ND gave u guys the year before..

      @@irishcole3516 This loss couldn't have been as painful as the loss to BC in 1993 even though both games ended with last second field goals.

      @@MichaelSmith-mi2vragreed I remember that game well a former classmate of mine Terrence Wiggins, was a safety/ cornerback for BC. Notre Dame was in a stupor the whole game and BC held on after ND finally woke up too late.. worst loss ever in my opinion. They also got curb stomped by them the following year too.. they have since regained control of that series though as they should have..

    Joe playing chess while the announcers are stuck on checkers with 2:10 to go. The defense was the strength in 90 and Darren Perry was a household name in the NFL for a long time for a reason.

    The National Championship - and The Heisman - that got away. This game cost the Irish two things : the '90 national title by losing and The Rocket The Heisman Trophy by not being able to play in the second half. If Ismail goes uninjured, he likely scores at least one more TD - likely more - and ND wins. Then The Orange Bowl re-match w/ Colorado is more focused as to the actual stakes - the winner gets the # 1 ranking without outside help - and the Irish likely win. Dunno. Maybe there were too many big games in a row during this stretch and Mirer simply being too inexpetienced. Stanford was an aberration. This one was inertia and momentum that fizzled when the script flippped. 😮

      I have the NBC broadcast of this game on DVD, and this is definitely not it.

    Notre Dame QB lost the game for the fighting Irish, who were anything but. So did the bozo coaches who called IDIOT plays. Notre Dame knows how to pull defeat from the jaws of victory.

    Last comment. "Paterno lost the first two games of the season and people said what's wrong with Penn State?" Franklin lost five in a row, I don't remember anybody saying that.

    • @hdubya692
      @hdubya692 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You weren't paying attention then. Plenty of people were questioning Franklin. There was definitely a lack of creativity with the Penn State offense after the 87 championship. Tony Sacca helped open things up. And that 94 team was great, except the defense. Most damning is 2-9 stretch against Iowa and 9 straight losses against Michigan. That would have gotten every other coach fired. Strangely, we had more success against Ohio State during that stretch.

      Since joining the Big Ten, Joe had two back to back losing seasons, lost to Mich 9 straight years, 5 to Iowa, won only one game in the Shoe, and took almost 11 years to win the second big ten title. And his record against John Cooper, one of the worst OSU coaches, 3-4. Never won in the Shoe when he coached OSU. Most points Joe’ PSU scored in the Shoe? 14. Forget about Jim Tressle. Record against him 3-9. Joe got blanked by Mich twice during the 9 losing streak. Yeah, bring Joe back, fire JF.

      @@hdubya692 the 94 Defense was fine, people act like it was different than 93 or 95. It was on the field 45 minutes a game and Joe played prevent with multiple TD leads. 32 year season ticket holder, still remember Carter running into the endzone to send the place into a frenzy vs Michigan St.

      At least 4 of the losses to Michigan and Iowa were ref nonsense and Paterno was two bad calls away from unbeaten seasons in 05 and 08. And that was in a down stretch by his standards. He was the best ever @@hdubya692
