2005 Penn State at Northwestern (10 Minutes or Less)

  • www.linebacker-... Following three easy wins over mediocre opponents, Penn State was still looking to prove the "Dark Years" were truly a thing of the past. Northwestern was a dangerous team under head coach Randy Walker, though the Wildcats were beat up by Arizona State the week before Penn State rolled into Evanston. What would transpire that morning (11 a.m. kickoff!) and afternoon would become forever etched in Penn State football lore.

The play at 09:20 was one of the best in the 2005 season in all of College Football. Williams won that game with his talent. I was working that day and remember we were all huddled around the little TV in the shop break room. He scored and the place erupted. One of the few good memories I have of my time at that job.

In my opinion, this was the spring board game to such a successful season. It boosted their morale to an incredible level, and we probably would not be holding the 05 season on such a high pedestal had they not won the game in this fashion

1 second away from being undefeated!!!! Michigan game, is still a nightmare in my head 😕!!!!

The most inconsistent, yet clutch performance of Michael Robinson's career. Even though they were 3-0 coming in, this victory was really the launch of PSU becoming a national championship contender once again.

I think one could argue that this was the most important game of the 2005 Penn State season, it completed the turnaround that began in 2004 with the goal line stand at Indiana. Penn State taking the lead and winning a close one gave the team the confidence to win close games, they'd go on to beat Ohio State and win the Orange Bowl. Most importantly, the team bounced back just fine from the loss to Michigan, many of us at the time were worried it'd be 1999 all over again, but thankfully it wasn't.

It made Beaver Hall rowdy from what I remember.

This definitely was a spring board game!!! M. Robinson found his confidence in this game, D. Butler, J. Norwood, and D. Williams showed up big when they had to? I am a die hard Penn State football fan and this is one of my favorite teams, and we have had many of great football teams!!!

One second away from being undefeated is still hard to swallow!!! The Michigan game, but just like a lot of Penn State teams who got cheated out of national titles, even if we went undeafed, the media wanted to see USC and Texas no matter what we did? Disgusting, if you look at the history of college football traditions and all the perfect undefeated seasons and all Americans and big influential games, Penn State doesn't have to take a back seat to any other program at all!!! We have been screwed out of more national titles than anyone else by far? Enough said, "We Are"!!! 👍

The first PSU game I ever watched... Now as a junior, it was sweet to see us beat Northwestern again!

Statement win for Penn State. Got them back nationally relevant for the first time since the 90s. Northwestern had a good year, too. They had their first winning season since 2000, and they beat Wisconsin and Iowa as well as in-state rival Illinois. Sad story to Coach Gary Walker, but 2005 may have changed Penn State and Northwestern long term.

Me and my friends were usually too hungover to even absorb a football game at those times.

PSU finds itself in a similar situation. The team has not been good for two years.

@SuperSricky Depends what year you are talking about. As a sophomore King was one of the best cover corner in the entire country. He shut down Meachum and Ginn. As a junior he was one of the worst in the country. I can't explain what happened to him.

Our offense was so talented, and our defense, with Dan Connor, Sean Lee, Paul Posluszny, Tamba Hali, Jay Alford, Anthony Scirotto, Lydell Sargent, Alan Zemaitis...could have beaten any team in the country, a team with more *heart* than Texas or USC and just as much skill. Too bad playoffs were not yet invented! F*** Michigan (& he was out!)

Penn State was 3-0 but unranked coming into this game. 2005 was the year that PSU got back on track after 5 years of forgettable football. The drive PSU put together to pull this one out of the fire was obviously cool but nobody could have known it would save a 1 loss and Big10 championship season.

I wish you showed the replay of the "late hit" at 8:00 as it was COMPLETE BS.

Great game (from a PSU fan's perspective) but literally the worst play-by-play I have ever heard.
