Nuria Rial and Makota Sakurada really made this special. But everyone did a great job. I love the audience. At 58, I would be one of the youngest ones in attendance.

What glorious singing especially from the Japanese tenor. The bass and soprano are excellent too. This performance is, to my mind, as near to perfection as one may get this side of Paradise. Superb orchestra and playing.

Bereits die ersten wenigen Akkorde der Bratschen und des Cellos, und man horcht auf. So einfach ihre Struktur sein mag, dennoch, so tief ins Gemüt dringen sie ein. Was soll ich sagen, Bach war ein Genie. Die Musik scheint ob ihrer Schönheit nicht von dieser Welt zu sein, so wunderbar.

Es ist so eine schöne Entdeckung, alle dies Ausführungen von die Bach Kantaten! Dar steckt glaube ich viel arbeit dahinter um so ein gutes Resultat zu bekommen. Auch die Klang und Bild aufnahmen sind Perfekt.
Herr Lutz weißt seine Leuten gut auszuwählen, und zu Intonieren - Ich vergleiche es mit meinen Beruf - als Orgelbauer, dar machen wir das selbe aber mit Pfeifen. Ich finde das Orgelpositiv übrigens schön, es scheint sich auch gut spielen zu lassen. Ich möchte mal wissen wer es gebaut hat... Auch dieser Organist finde ich der Beste, er weißt wie er das Instrument singen lasst. Gratuliere !!!

Je suis absolument d' accord avec vous. Ce que je regrette (ce n'est pas le cas aujourd'hui), c'est l'exclusion à jamais des altos feminines, remplacées par des voix mi-homme mi-femme lamentables (je ne parle de la qualité des musiciens qui peut être excellente, seulement de la fausseté de la voix), pour de fausses raisons historiques, étant donné primo qu'il n'y eut jamais de castrats à Leipzig, sa propre femme y chantait, 2o que ces gens-là ne sont pas de vrais castrats… Un peu de conséquence, Messieurs des "versions historiques".

D'autre part, quelques contre-ténors sont vraiment exceptionnels de talent *et de justesse*. Souvenez-vous d'Alfred Deller -- et il y en a bien d'autres, hier comme aujourd'hui, tant en Allemagne (Scholl), qu'en France (Jarousski...) ou en Grande-Bretagne (Eswood, Bowman,...)

Que j'aime écouter Rudolf Lutz et ses musiciens, tous si exigeants ! L'acoustique de l'église est très généreuse. Je ne connaissais pas cette cantate, mais je l'ai écoutée plusieurs fois tellement j'ai plaisir à écouter les interprètes. L'orchestre dont je connais quelques têtes (la violoniste rousse en particulier). Quelle belle unité dans le groupe des violons ! Les solistes bien sûr, vraiment excellent. Il se trouve que j'apprécie particulièrement la soprano Nuria Rial (une BWV 36 d'anthologie) et j'ai été comblé (les moments précédant son aria où on contemple sa sensibilité frémissante…). Le son est excellent et la prise de vue nous permet de nous immiscer dans l'intimité de l'orchestre et du chœur. Que du bonheur. Merci et bravo…

It's strange to see that the weak link of the three singers is the home grown one. Núria and Makuto are superb, but one always has the feeling that Herr Wörner is on the brink of disaster! Overall, a fine performance from all. Thanks for uploading the full cantata.
Surprising that you would say this, as he is actually better than many of the basses on commercial recordings of the none-too-distant past, and, frankly better than famous Hans Hotter, who recorded Wotan towards the end of his career and filled an hours long recording with awful wobbly sound. Wörner is perfectly acceptable if not as clean and crisp as the others (hardly unusual for the bass voice). I used to think the 60s recordings of Jakob Stämpfli were as good as it gets, but several of the basses Lutz has used are at least as good.

it´s a strange passage that goes from G minor to D minor (that´s not strange), but the way he does it is really particular: Gm, Bdim, Cm, Adim (F#dim), Gm/D, E7, F7#11(he may have thought of it as a Bdim, with a chromatism up in the third), Eb/G, Dm/A, A7, Dm -D7-(etc...)

By the way, you don´t know what books I study from and why I pointed out that passage, that is particularly strange according to the baroque view of music. I´m not going to judge you (the way you did with me), but I´ve been teaching Fugue (specifically Bach´s WTC I & II, ´The musical offering´ and ´Art of the Fugue´) in the National Conservatory for seven years so believe me when I say that kind of modulation is very unusual.
I cannot imagine Bach did not also think about his music in a theoretical way. Indeed some considerable thought must have been devoted by Bach to the highly unique modulation Mr Furman highlighted. The discussion above reminds me of a quote from the Dutch organist Leo van Doeselaar: 'the only consistent thing about Bach is that he consistently puts the listener on a different track than expected.'
The text mentions the devil, and accordingly, Bach employs some harmonies involving the devil in music, a tritone, in this modulation.

Such a rich, warm sound. Bach had an unerring sense of sonority, even though his music frequently is so elastic it can be performed with almost any instruments.

The better question is whether anyone has come close to Bach in... anything.
And the answer for both would be, no. Not even close by anyone, before or since.

Belle version, certes mais pour la BWV 18 j'en reste à celle de Suzuki.
J'aime beaucoup aussi la version dirigée par Nikolaüs Harnoncourt et les Wienersängerknaben ! Les tempi ne sont pas du tout les mêmes qu'avec Rudolf Lutz ! ...
I hate to criticise these fabulous performances of Bach, but I felt a less vehement approach from the soloists would have been better ( At first I was going to say less operatic but I think vehemence is closer to what I am trying to say.) I think there is always running through Bach's music a reflective element even in the context of strong emotional renderings
Not all moments in all Bach's music shoudl sound reflective. Have you read the lyrics? Some of those lyrics require vehemence. Just like in everyday life where it would be inappropriate to say to your wife, "Are you serious? Who hit you? He gave you this bruise, huh?" in anything but a vehement tone, or to say "I can't thank you enough for offering to pay for this three-month trip to Europe!" in a "reflective" voice.
Shame the audience for not rising up
One of the most beautiful and least performed cantatas. Versy well done by this band, the conductor however is only a nuissance.

This performance is compromised by two things, one visual and one musical. The good news with making your instrumentalists stand is that they often play better. The bad news is that they seem to think that bending their knees and bobbing about helps their phrasing; it doesn't; the recorder player on the far left is particularly annoying in this respect. Musically, this fashion for leaving a gap between the penultimate and last note of a section makes no musical sense and has no historical evidence to back its use.
