How do you prevent fry from being sucked into the filter if you don't use sponges on the intakes or sponge filters?

I've heard they're bad at finding food. It makes me hesitant to put them in a large community tank.

They will not fight for a place at the table, but they are adaptable. A community tank experience for them should not include any aggressive fish.
