You could have included, in fish to avoided, is the Gulper catfish, unless it is kept by itself in a tank.ability to swallow fish larger than itself is truly remarkable.

Oh yes that catfish can eat fish twice it’s size. I talked about it in other articles on the blog but not here 😅. I can add it to the blog. It definitely should be avoided - good comment :).

Freshwater catfish is a very interesting species for many fishkeepers to own. The fish will look so cool in our tank. It has so many incredible features. Some of them love to clean up the bottom of the aquariums with all of the foods left. Otocinclus is a really good one. Most of them are really active. It's great that they love to eat algae in our tank. Thank you so much for doing this video.

I think you might be referring to the Chinese algae eater. They are know for eating the slime coat of larger fish. I haven’t heard of Otos doing this. Their issue is they do too good of a job and run of out their natural food source. They need to be supplemented food

Never had any issues with common plecos in any of my aquariums. I had a pleco in all but one of my aquariums, (that was a little 5 gallon where I kept a beta fish by itself.
My pleco’s never grew to more than 10 inches and they kept to themselves, never aggressive towards any other fish in the tank. 🤷‍♀️

Paroon sharks are the most common catfish sold here for aquarium. And let me tell, it tastes awful, specially the belly fat .......that stinks 🤮. Plecos have now been declared as invasive species and banned in pond or in open water . Upside down catfish are very agressive and the biggest problem is that they're nocturnal. They attack fishes when the lights off, most of the fishes sleep that time. They have 3 spikes , if any of that gets pricked it'd swell and become painful. Gless catfish I want to keep. 👍

    Hello from 🇬🇧.
    Interesting video.
I have kept a few of these. I love catfish. It would have been nice to know which are Nocturnal & which aren't as many catfish are Nocturnal & won't be seen as much. I'm looking for a type that is active during the day but doesn't get too big, perhaps 5 inches & can live with Dwarf Cichlids.

I’ve had nothing but bad luck w any pictus cats, I love em & think their very pretty but bc of all their barbs & whiskers they always get either stuck in a net or sucked up into my water changing tube while I’m trying to clean the tank. But now my polar parrots are breeding NON STOP! & I don’t have that kind of tank space w a 75 gallon tank.

Meanwhile ... if you're setting up an African biotope aquarium, and want some African catfish to perform a similar role to the South American Otocinclus ... look up the Genus Chiloglanis. They're relatives of the upside down catfish, but remain relatively small at less than 3 inches. They'll pair nicely with various West African rainforest fishes such as Anomalochromis thomasi and Neolebias ansorgei, plus various West African killifish that like soft, acid water. Some species even live alongside these companions in the wild.
Just one fly in the ointment - they're rare and pricey.

    • @AquariumStoreDepot
      @AquariumStoreDepot  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thanks for the suggestion. Pricey but well worth it if they are solid algae eaters like otos

the common pleco is a good fish but not for begginers it can grow smallert then other catfish but its reccomended 150 - 300 gals for them to hit 2 ft but they grow 12 - 14 inches in aquariums but can reach 14 - 16 people reccomend 125 gal but that will only get them to 16 inches and 2 ft as way far so you might reccomend 150 gals now that is better but still wont fit they will only frow 18 - 20 inches they will need a 200 gal that will get them to a whopping 2 ft and 300 gal is reccomended since they can get 3 ft too and if you want big fish with a small aquariumt then just take fish that are 8 - 10 inches if you are so frustrated to get a pleco get a brittle nose they grow about 6 - 8 inches and only require 20 gals but reccomended 40 - 55 or 75 gals even since some can grow 8 inches or 10 inches so reccomended 75 gals or 55 gals

Another one to avoid ... the Piraiba Catfish, which is related to the Tiger Shovelnose, and which occasionally appears at dealerships. Do NOT buy this fish, unless you plan to house it in its own swimming pool. It reaches NINE FEET in length, and over 400 lbs in weight as an adult. This is best left in the Amazon, or displayed in a huge public aquarium that will do the fish justice. Can you afford even to BUILD a 250,000 gallon tank? No? Then this fish is NOT for you.
An aquarium capable of housing this fish properly is a full blown civil engineering project, with a budget to match. First, you're looking at hiring a 50 ton tracked excavator to dig the foundations. Then, laying a 3 foot thick concrete bed ... about 25 feet by 12. Then, fitting the glass in place, complete with the reinforced steel bracing that will be needed. Once you've checked it for integrity, it'll take a week to fill. Fancy this sort of undertaking? You can have three Ferraris in the garage for the price of this setup.
Then there's running costs. Don't ask unless you can afford to blow enough money per month to buy a new Mercedes.
This is why you should leave this fish to a large and well funded public aquarium.
