  • Wonderful Sky Sports Originals documentary looking at the career of former Tottenham and England midfielder Glenn Hoddle.
    From Spurs’ memorable 1981 FA Cup win to his sacking from the England manager’s job, Hoddle: A Touch of Genius covers a career with plenty of highs and lows.
    He enjoyed great success as a player at Tottenham, with whom he started his career, winning the FA Cup two years in a row before tasting victory on the European stage as Spurs lifted the UEFA Cup in 1984.

    Criminally overlooked by England, should have tripled the amount of caps he got. He was 30 years ahead of his time in terms of technical ability and flair and had he been Spanish or Italian would have easily hit 100+ caps. I’m not a Spurs fan but he was easily the finest player we have ever produced.

      Couldn't agree more, WHAT A PLAYER this man was! Hell of coach too, great football brain, criminally let down by the FA and some of his players.

      Glenn was underated in this country.. We didn't know an actual class footballer when we saw them.
      Any other county who put skills at the top of the list.. He would of been classed as a god..
      If he played for someone like Juventus.. Glenn would of had a statue outside the ground.. We just bearly gave him some England caps..

    Glenn. Fellow Harlow boy. He got the football talent. I got the joy of getting on a train from Burnt Mill station, going to White Hart Lane to see him play. And others! If Glenn does see this, he was very loud in The Shark PH. 😉 P.S. Love Mickey Hazard.

    I loved him as a player and then as a coach. Hoddle and Venables were the best two coaches England have had since Ramsey. I'd love to see Hoddle back as England manager, but the FA aren't that smart.

    Disgusting how he was treated as an England player, should have had 100 caps plus, but sadly due to the mentality of the English National Team, FA etc he was never properly valued. Beckham in my opinion shouldn't have had as many caps as I find him vastly overrated.

    • @Ruda-n4h
      @Ruda-n4h 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hoddle had enough chances (53 caps) to prove his worth. Although undoubtably talented, he played as though his job was to wait until someone else gave him the ball, when he would do his stuff. With his team under pressure, the supply of the ball to him could easily be cut off, and he wasn’t the kind of player who would go back and get mixed up in the rough and tumble to get it for himself as a really good player would. The 1986 World Cup was a personal disaster for him.
      It wasn't just England managers who realised he couldn't adapt his game. I would recommend anyone interested in this period to read 'Soccer Coaching: The European Way,' published in 1980. If you read between the lines other coaches of the time were of the same opinion. Rinus Michels hit the nail on the head,
      'In the old game the players could afford to show off their skill and think only a little. But modern defensive football has changed all that and brought a new set of problems. So, the players have to change because unless they do, they will never escape from their opponents tight-marking, quick tackling and good coverage. The ones who can’t do it look for excuses, trying to blame others.’

    Well, England national team never recovered since Glen managed it. The English FA hasn't won nothing since. Glen could have won it but they fired him only 3 years in, while Southgate lost n lost in 3 tournaments and he's still there today 2024 Euro Cup torturing us. Well done, English FA!!! Am wondering, who's responsible for firing the FA?

    Still treat skilled players in England like that now! Look at the Scholes situation. Englands best player by far and Lampard should of only been a supersub coz he didn’t contribute anything part from the odd goal if he didn’t score he didn’t contribute whilst Scholes was involved in everything nearly every goal he was involved and Gerrard next to him charging forward would of maybe won stuff!
