What Mr Maitreyan is saying is based on the understanding that most malayalees have about the issues in north and central India. And I am not at all against it. Me being a malayalee living in north India has witnessed the Ram temple issues more closely. Here especially the people living in Uttar Pradesh do give importance to the building of Ram temple in Ayodhya as for them the disputed site is Ramjanambhoomi(the place where Lord Ram was born). This has been their belief for centuries and not since 1947. And it has been recorded in various historical texts by poets, travellers and even the British. But yes it wouldn't be wrong to say that the Jan Sangh and later the BJP used the issue for electoral gains in both the Hindi heartland and also the Centre. But what all malayalees especially those living in Kerala should understand is that by allocating the disputed 2.77 acres of land for temple construction and separate 5 acres of land within Ayodhya for mosque construction the Supreme Court of India has very skilfully put the nearly 4 centuries old dispute and the politics around it to rest. This will effectively move the politics of the Hindi heartland to issues of public welfare and development. To those who say that this will prompt the BJP or saffron outfits to demolish other religious structures should know that according to a law passed by the parliament in 1991(The Protection of Religious Structures Act) it states that all the religious structures that India inherited in 15th Aug 1947 has continue to remain and is the responsibility of the state to protect it. But this law gave an exception to the Ramjanambhoomi dispute an exception as it was a very old dispute and was not covered under this law. To those who think that the current govt in the centre can bring amendment to this law to pave was for future demolition of other religious structures and construction of temples should also understand the fact that with the recent judgement in Ayodhya land dispute the Supreme Court of India has given the 1991 law the status of the basic principles of the Constitution of India. And from a 1971 judgement of the Supreme Court of India the basic principles of the Constitution cannot be amended. Thus it makes it harder for any govt to dilute the 1991 law. On the question of Babri Masjid demolition and wheather it was right or wrong the answer is that ofcourse the demolition was wrong and it should not have happened. But the incident is history now. We should rather ensure that it does not affect our present and is not repeated in the future. And last but not the least I would like to say that rising nationalism is not at all a threat to India and its diverse society. It will rather encourage the citizens especially the youth to work, earn, live and grow for the country. If the country has been able to accommodate communism, socialism, secularism, etc in the past then it will also be able to accomodate nationalism in the present.
Nationalism is dangerous than religion and castes. Please understand the fact that nationalism is not patriotism. World wars were the result of this blind nationalism.

Patriotism is the love and respect one has for his country and nationalism is pride one has on the cultural heritage of his country. All nationalists are patriots but all patriots are not nationalists. And the rise of nationalism in India is not an isolated phenomenon. Many countries in the world especially US, Russia, UK, Europe, Latin America, Africa all are experiencing the same phenomenon. On the matter of nationalism giving rise to fascism and leading to World War one should understand that the successful rise of dictators and they pushing their country to World War was due to reasons like failure of democracy in their country, no system of checks and balances in governance, their greed for expansion of their territories. These lead to World War. In India the rise of nationalism has been very different. It emergence and rise to power at the national level has been through democratic process and the established law of the land. They have even been re-elected with bigger mandate. India is also a functional democracy with an established constitution, independent Judiciary and autonomous Election Commission. And if those who were in power earlier are not able to counter the nationalistic ideology politically and in elections then it is not the fault of the voters rather the political class of the country who are in opposition and the intellectual class of the country who are pro Congress or pro Communist should rather introspect themselves where they are going wrong and fight the natonalists ideologically, politically and through elections rather than spreading misinformation that the safety, security, communal harmony of the country is at danger under nationalists.
Very well said. I also want to add that the allotment of the disputed land to Ram Lalla is based on the principle of adverse possession. According to this law, the property under question should be continuous, open and peaceful. Since the inception of the Masjid in the 16th century, muslims have never had an exclusive possession of the property as there was frequent intervention by the devotees of Ram because of its significance. This is clearly mentioned in many literature, especially by the European travellers. Also, Mughals themselves have acknowledged the place as masjid-e-janmsthan denoting the birth place of Sri Ram. I see the issue as the struggle by a community to regain their place of worship over centuries. Unfortunately, the popular discourse does not showcase this aspect of the case. One should appreciate the Hindu community for waiting patiently throughout the centuries and willing to abide by the rule of the law in this case.

Lot of interesting thoughts. I think it is a stretch to say that "India" is in danger of becoming a Syria or Iraq. What we have is a political India as a result of British occupation, its subsequent departure and the agreement by many existing small sovereign "nations" agreeing, willingly or otherwise, to join the larger political India. For better or worse we now have an entity identified as India. Within it we have so far managed to live with not much disharmony, mainly because a large majority believe in more or less the same ideas/rituals/practices and as "civil" humans does not vocalize out what we really think of someone from a different community with some exceptions - Laloo Yadav famously said about the civil war in Sri Lanka " Why are they fighting? Both of them looks like Madrasies!" All it requires is someone like a Trump to gain upper hand in India to bring out the inner emotions that all of us hold wrt to the other. Even if it happens I still believe we will not become like our larger geographic neighbours.

There is mention about kamboja in Arthasaastra as people who followed a republican constituion. Its mentioned ആ located in north west as streching from hindukush to rajouri in present JK. What Mr Maitreyan is saying is based on the understanding that most malayalees have about the issues in north and central India. And I am not at all against it. Me being a malayalee living in north India has witnessed the Ram temple issues more closely. Here especially the people living in Uttar Pradesh do give importance to the building of Ram temple in Ayodhya as for them the disputed site is Ramjanambhoomi(the place where Lord Ram was born). This has been their belief for centuries and not since 1947. And it has been recorded in various historical texts by poets, travellers and even the British. But yes it wouldn't be wrong to say that the Jan Sangh and later the BJP used the issue for electoral gains in both the Hindi heartland and also the Centre. But what all malayalees especially those living in Kerala should understand is that by allocating the disputed 2.77 acres of land for temple construction and separate 5 acres of land within Ayodhya for mosque construction the Supreme Court of India has very skilfully put the nearly 4 centuries old dispute and the politics around it to rest. This will effectively move the politics of the Hindi heartland to issues of public welfare and development. To those who say that this will prompt the BJP or saffron outfits to demolish other religious structures should know that according to a law passed by the parliament in 1991(The Protection of Religious Structures Act) it states that all the religious structures that India inherited in 15th Aug 1947 has continue to remain and is the responsibility of the state to protect it. But this law gave an exception to the Ramjanambhoomi dispute an exception as it was a very old dispute and was not covered under this law. To those who think that the current govt in the centre can bring amendment to this law to pave was for future demolition of other religious structures and construction of temples should also understand the fact that with the recent judgement in Ayodhya land dispute the Supreme Court of India has given the 1991 law the status of the basic principles of the Constitution of India. And from a 1971 judgement of the Supreme Court of India the basic principles of the Constitution cannot be amended. Thus it makes it harder for any govt to dilute the 1991 law. On the question of Babri Masjid demolition and wheather it was right or wrong the answer is that ofcourse the demolition was wrong and it should not have happened. But the incident is history now. We should rather ensure that it does not affect our present and is not repeated in the future. And last but not the least I would like to say that rising nationalism is not at all a threat to India and its diverse society. It will rather encourage the citizens especially the youth to work, earn, live and grow for the country. If the country has been able to accommodate communism, socialism, secularism, etc in the past then it will also be able to accomodate nationalism in the present.
Nationalism is dangerous than religion and castes. Please understand the fact that nationalism is not patriotism. World wars were the result of this blind nationalism.

Patriotism is the love and respect one has for his country and nationalism is pride one has on the cultural heritage of his country. All nationalists are patriots but all patriots are not nationalists. And the rise of nationalism in India is not an isolated phenomenon. Many countries in the world especially US, Russia, UK, Europe, Latin America, Africa all are experiencing the same phenomenon. On the matter of nationalism giving rise to fascism and leading to World War one should understand that the successful rise of dictators and they pushing their country to World War was due to reasons like failure of democracy in their country, no system of checks and balances in governance, their greed for expansion of their territories. These lead to World War. In India the rise of nationalism has been very different. It emergence and rise to power at the national level has been through democratic process and the established law of the land. They have even been re-elected with bigger mandate. India is also a functional democracy with an established constitution, independent Judiciary and autonomous Election Commission. And if those who were in power earlier are not able to counter the nationalistic ideology politically and in elections then it is not the fault of the voters rather the political class of the country who are in opposition and the intellectual class of the country who are pro Congress or pro Communist should rather introspect themselves where they are going wrong and fight the natonalists ideologically, politically and through elections rather than spreading misinformation that the safety, security, communal harmony of the country is at danger under nationalists.
Very well said. I also want to add that the allotment of the disputed land to Ram Lalla is based on the principle of adverse possession. According to this law, the property under question should be continuous, open and peaceful. Since the inception of the Masjid in the 16th century, muslims have never had an exclusive possession of the property as there was frequent intervention by the devotees of Ram because of its significance. This is clearly mentioned in many literature, especially by the European travellers. Also, Mughals themselves have acknowledged the place as masjid-e-janmsthan denoting the birth place of Sri Ram. I see the issue as the struggle by a community to regain their place of worship over centuries. Unfortunately, the popular discourse does not showcase this aspect of the case. One should appreciate the Hindu community for waiting patiently throughout the centuries and willing to abide by the rule of the law in this case.

Both of them looks like Madrasies!" All it requires is someone like a Trump to gain upper hand in India to bring out the inner emotions that all of us hold wrt to the other.
