I like how you're at a point where you can notice all the subtle moments and musicality without using musical language. shows your taste and honest reaction! love the vids
Fun fact: at the end, not only were they playing some of the most famous musical endings (1812 overture, Hallelujah chorus), but they were also recreating some of the most famous drill moves in DCI history. Lots going on there. :-)
Maybe it's just me, but the "crown to crown" drill at the very end seems like a nod to '91 Star of Indiana's famous "cross to cross" set in their closer. After all, Carolina Crown is the contemporary incarnation of Star, or Star of Indiana, Jr. as I like to call them.
2007 carolina crown was the first ever live drum corps show that I saw and it stuck with me ever since. Been a crown fan, and attending live shows at least once a year (outside of covid) since 2006. 2008 Crown is easily one of my top 5 favorite shows by them though. Such a great show
My favorite DCI videos of yours are when you're clearly having such a good time watching a show and this one was a perfect example. I love watching you discover a show I've known for years and thinking "Oh I can't wait for her to see this part she's gonna go crazy!" and you never disappoint. Hope you get to see all these corps live in August this year!!
man I marched DCI in 08 for SOA and it was the last year finals was outdoors like you mentioned. We marched in semi finals in the summer heat and sun. I would have probably preferred the AC like they have now. We had some back field sections along with other corps and they sounded good off the back stands. Lucas Oil eats up anything backfield and the acoustics are completely different. This show has some really amazing back facing moments as well that came across so much better in the outdoor stadium.
I marched PC in 2003 when Finals was in Orlando. When we watched the corps for the remainder of semis and finals following our final performance, we sat in the upper deck and could hear everyone crystal clear. The acoustics from the domed stadiums are garbage by comparison. The nuances of backfield playing are not as clear because the huge curtain sucks up the sound, or the reverb bounces back right into the ensemble. What also annoys me is when the electronics and synths are turned up so loud that they nearly drown out the hornline. It isn't so bad outdoors, but it's amplified with the indoor stadiums. The crowd doesn't sound as loud as an open-air stadium, either. My sincere hope is that they'll go back to outdoor stadiums for Finals in the next couple of years. I'm honestly bored and tired of it always being in Indy every year.
I marched with Spirit that summer and we were at a lot of the same competitions as Crown. It was so fun to see this show develop over the summer and I felt so privileged to see it in person almost every day!!
2008 was such a great year for Drum Corps. Crown, Blue Devils, and Cavaliers kept trading places all summer long, then Phantom Regiment went 3rd in Quarter Finals, Second in Semis, and won on finals night. I remember talking to our visual caption head (I marched in this show -- I'm laying on the 30 yard line at 7:02 of Claire de Lune) on finals night and him saying this year was so crazy and that literally any of the top four could have won in a normal year, but the talent and the design was so great that year, someone had to win. 2004 was a similar situation between Cavaliers, SCV, and Blue Devils. Great performances all around.
Notice how "stunning" she keeps saying the ballad is. You know this hornline can play loud and in tune, but when you have a hornline that can play at Mezzo Forte to Pianissimo with such control and musicality in those dynamic ranges. Dear God it is moving.
Crown is my home corp. I started marching for my local high school at the time Crown was founded. A few of my bandmates marched with them in their early years. Watching them grow from their first year to the Champions that they became has been a very fun ride.
It warms my heart to see you so excited for the crown set. This show won me over, and I’m happy I could be in the crown set for my years. We will get you over to the states to watch finals for yourself where you can see everyone. Courtney for 2022 finals. In my mind...
Crown alum from the late 90s. I was at finals in 2008. Finals was supposed to be the inaugural event for Lucas Oil stadium in Indy. The stadium was not ready so this was the last outdoor finals in Bloomington Indiana. I love Lucas Oil but there is nothing quite like outdoor drum corps.
Agreed. My first finals at Indy I was concerned because I had played in domes before in high school. Unfortunately, the echo was a distraction for some time until my brain/ears sort of adjusted to it. I think it's a great venue for holding off weather (not to be underestimated) but I really do not enjoy the echo.
Fun fact about this show, that basically nobody outside the corps from that year knows: The trumpet line had this snap-off challenge all tour to see which of us could do that finger whip-snap the loudest. It was such a fun challenge, that we decided to throw it in the show. You can see the trumpet line do the move right between 4:08 and 4:09, right in the midst of that mix of trumpet players behind the front line. They all snap their right hands at the same time as the snare line's snap in the music.
Love watching your pure and genuine reactions. You are such a doll! In case you were wondering what some of the classical pieces being played in this mash-up: Leonard Bernstein Overture to "Candide" with Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" Rossini's Barber of Seville Overture, Mendelssohn's "Wedding March " (I know I'll miss some.) The quiet part you loved combined Debussy's "Clair de Lune" with Bernstein's "Somewhere" from West Side Story. Liszt "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2", Aaron Copland's "Simple Gifts" from Appalachian Spring, Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture and Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" from Messiah. I miss live shows. Hope you get see one in person.
I really miss the OUTDOOR venue for finals. This move to Bloomington in 2008 really shows this difference in acoustics and crowd reaction, ambience, etc. I understand the reliability of the domes and nicer seating for fans but I would prefer to suffer in these college stadiums.
I was there that night, it was the first DCI Finals I ever attended. They were held at Indiana University Memorial Stadium that year because Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis wasn't finished yet. It was that season that Crown became my favorite corps also, and they have been ever since!
Im currently in a high school marching band and I aspire to be in DCI, I know several members of the Western Marching Panthers have made it to DCI and there is nothing I love more than performing in front of a crowd and hearing them cheer for you.
2007-2008 were definitely the first years crown got a lot of recognition for their brass line. Set up their chain of success leading to the win in 2013 and beyond
I always felt this show hit such a big home run. I was there for quarters, semis, and finals. It got better every night. 13 years later, I still love watching this show.
Great year for drum corps and a great show. As much as I love this Claire de lune, my favorite is 94 Phantom. I have so many memories tied to watching the 1994 VHS and watching that show. My wife walked down the aisle to Claire de Lune because of 94 Phantom.
I love your reaction! Hopefully, the DCI will soon return here in Rome, New York (I live just a few blocks away from the stadium.) for another Drums Along the Mohawk competition! (Because of the lockdowns, there still won't be a competition here until 2022.)
You should check out 1988 Blue Devils. It is my all-time favorite feel-good show. Whenever I am in a bad mood I put this show on and instantly makes me feel good.
I request you look at the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season animation (by force thirteen) 2020 was a hyperactive hurricane season seeing over 10 storms (the average amount per hurricane season) Hurricane season starts June 1st and ends November 30th (but 2021 will start around May 15th and end November 30th)
It's like she gets it even when she doesn't get it. She is someone who I wish I could have marched with if she played or knew what this activity was way earlier
This is an awesome show. I love crown. I must say, however, that no one does classical better than Phantom. Of course Phantom won it all that year. Regardless, great job Crown!
If you're an experienced performer, you don't get nervous out there. When I was marching, the performance was actually my CALMEST time, because I was there doing what I wanted to do. The last time I was nervous on the field was my very first public run with Blue Devils (the evaluation show, for the oooold timers!). Ever since then....nope.
Agreed. At this point you've been through a show so many times most things are on autopilot and you can really focus on refining your performance and execution.
Someone I went to high school pulled a really nasty prank on the school marching band. He poured thick molasses into a couple of tubas, and mismatched all the mouthpieces of the rest brass instruments.
I wish I had money to let you respond, but please do the blue devils 2011 “the best my heart skipped” it is an awesome show and it is my personal favorite.
Now that you've reviewed a ton of these shows, you're probably more focused on the corp than the crowd reactions but I think if you rewatch Phantom's Sparticus ending it really highlights the "proper etiquette" for a show with the camera angles. th-cam.com/video/VDd5Pu_TVNk/w-d-xo.html My Band directors used to say "make them throw babies!"
Everyone looks the same wearing shakos and non-form-fitting uniforms (uniforms, not costumes). No props littering the canvas. Beautiful. Come on, modern drum corps. Just because you _can_ doesn't mean you _should_ . The question should be, "Hmm, Cavaliers 2002. What did they do, and what did they _not_ do? How to we design a show _as good_ or _better_ than _THAT?"_
I know there are a lot of people who feel that way. The reason I recommended 2008 over 2007 is because I felt that overall, Courtney would enjoy this one more because of all the "familiar" music and general entertainment throughout the entire show. Plus, there's no sudden voice at the end like in 2007. That was a big part of the decision. Love that 2007 show also though. Definitely one of Crown's best shows!
It is the 2008 show instead of the 2018 show as you have it listed in your title. It is definitely one of my favorites.

Wise words from my brass caption head, “good corps can play loud, great corps can play quiet.”
Along that vein, one of my brass instructors used to say, “Make your softs softer to make your louds louder.”

the dramatic transition at 2:49 is one of my favorite crown moments ever
Rewatch the last 30 seconds. The colorguard changes their flags midspin. Creates a cool effect.
This was seriously magic for me in 2008. I still wait for it to be done so perfectly...
