This is fabulous. I'm having a nostalgia orgasm right now. I was born in 1990, and watched CN probably since 1993 to 1998, so this collection is gold to me. I will save it and cherish it.

I hate how Superchunk became meaningless once CN started doing marathons every day.

mqgTWO96: Here's some of the Checkerboard Era.

    • @mqgTWO96

Jessica Black Yeah I know, I've had to look on YT in order to understand that era, I don't really care for it that much because at the time there were many just Hanna-Barbera reruns, old classic WB/MGM shorts, and many other ancient stuff as well. Checkerboard Era is really the true 90's Cartoon Network, it's really the "old school CN".
I'll say this though, the 1995-1997 period is probably when it hit its peak because of the What A Cartoon Show which was responsible for creating Cartoon Network's first original Cartoon Cartoons like Dexter's Lab, PPG, Johnny Bravo, Cow & Chicken, etc. with other failed pilots featured in there as well. Plus Space Ghost Coast to Coast and Cartoon Planet were big in this era as well. Don't know much about it cause I was born in the middle of this era so I have no memory of it at all.
So I get nostalgic for mainly Powerhouse & City era related stuff, but the Powerhouse was my all time favorite era. 1999-early 2004 was Cartoon Network's full peak or golden age for me. While 2004-early 2006 was the silver age during the City Era but still a really epic era with lots of variety at the time.

mqgTWO96 It's only because you were born too late that you favor 1999-2004. 1994-1997 was really the golden age. From around about the debut of Space Ghost Coast to Coast, up until the beginnings of Toonami. Yes, there were a lot of old recycled Hanna Barbera cartoons, as well as the WB, MGM and Fleisher stuff, but the way they packaged and advertised the vintage stuff really gave the network it's soul. Even Coast to Coast and Cartoon Planet were really just new ways to present old "found" toons. Because of this, the network had a meta-retro feel that it has never managed to recapture. Sure, starting in 95, they had the new "What a Cartoons", but the bulk of the network material still consisted of the vintage stuff, so it was still very much dedicated to stunting and packaging, which they did like no one else, except the original Nick at Nite, and in some cases, the original TNT. None of these networks has ever again reached the same level of quality or creativity they were at in the 90's. Oddly enough, the success of these networks is what ruined them. When they had money, they didn't need to be creative anymore.

Nicholas Moose uh...i'd say that CCF and CN City were pretty god damn creative lol. But anyways lets just agree that 1992-2007 CN is way better than anything going on with CN nowadays "creative-wise" and call it a day.
I definiety have respect for Checkerboard era as its the founder era for CN's legacy but Powerhouse and CN City ruled as well. The only 3 great eras IMO

I will admit that I still watched CN up until at least 2006. Maybe even later, ( don't remember exactly) because of the Justice League shows, the original incarnation of Teen Titans and my bizarre infatuation with Totally Spies. But for my money, checkerboard era takes the cake. ( admittedly this could have something to do with my obsession with old Hanna Barbera cartoons)

Nicholas Moose That's why you think the Checkerboard Era was the golden age, see, I never once cared about Cartoon Network for the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons, granted, I gratefully respect William Hanna and Joseph Barbera for the incredible work they've done with these cartoons and they are a huge part of the reason Cartoon Network was born into a huge library of cartoons, it's just that the problem with many of the HB cartoons, especially the 70's and 80's ones is that a lot of them had cheap toy-lines, many 70's ones seemed to be Scooby-Doo rip-off's while the 80's ones like Smurfs, Snorks, or Flintstones Kids were just cartoon characters turned into babies and just weren't that appealing to me.
See, I only cared for Cartoon Network for it's original Cartoon Cartoons like Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, PPG, Ed Edd n Eddy, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, etc. I really enjoyed Toonami, SVES, and Miguzi blocks with great variety of action shows and anime from Dragon Ball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, Gundam, Sailor Moon, Pokemon, to Justice League/JLU, Samurai Jack, Teen Titans, He-Man (2002), plus, throughout the Powerhouse Era you also had RERUNS of Kids WB shows from the 90's like Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures, Batman: TAS, Superman: TAS, Batman Beyond, Jackie Chan Adventures, X-Men: Evolution, Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries, and much more. I even enjoyed the WB rerun shows a lot more than the Hanna-Barbera reruns, that was just me. The only HB classics I liked were Scooby-Doo Where Are You, New Scooby-Doo Movies, A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, and HB Tom & Jerry, that was it. Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies I loved too but those were owned by WB.
The Powerhouse Era blocks were far superior, Toonami at its max popularity on weekdays from 1997-2003, Cartoon Cartoon Fridays from 1999-2003 going real hard with new episodes of Cartoon Cartoons every Friday nights, BIG PICK weekends and Summer Fest, the visual bumpers energy and promos that kept me intrigued into the network 24/7. Primetime block with that Jazz music with your favorite Cartoon Cartoons and classics every weeknight. Not to mention the Super Bowl specials from 1998-2001 with Tom vs. Jerry, Sylvester vs. Tweety, Roadrunner vs. Coyote, and Bugs vs. Daffy, those were huge major events of the Powerhouse Era. Like I said before, Toonami's max popularity on the weekdays was included in this era of course. Cartoon Theatre!
The Powerhouse Era had GROOVIES and MUSIC VIDEOS, I could come up with tons of them, "Incredible Shrinking Day", "Dexter's Secret Formula", "Go Monkey Go", "Josie & the Pussycats", "Buttercup I'm A Supergirl", "Atom Ant", "Jabberjaw" (my favorite one), "Gorilla for Sale", etc. This era had cartoon cross-overs in live-action settings and parodies, like the Scooby gang getting together talking about their mysteries, Sheep in the Big Cafeteria, Parking Lot, Scrappy-Doo Rants, and much more.
I could come up with tons more why the Powerhouse Era from 1997-2004 was the full peak of Cartoon Network, and I mean from the START of the Powerhouse Era from late 1997 to the VERY END on June 13, 2004, EVERYTHING, every visual, event, bumpers, promos, shows, episodes, everything it presented from start to finish, whether it was in 1998, 2001, 1999, 2003, or 2002, in between that 1997-2004 period, that era was just flat out perfection. Perfect blend of original programming (Cartoon Cartoons), WB acquisitions, classic favorites, action shows, and anime to enjoy for all ages organized into specific creative blocks. It wasn't TOO much original programming, nor it wasn't TOO many classics and reruns spamming up the network, it was a perfect balance. There's no denying it, the Powerhouse Era still remains as the longest Cartoon Network era to this day, it's still praised by many fans years later.
