There's one thing that I've learned about Gopros: Never buy the brand new version. You're better off buying a new one every 2 models. They add minimal upgrades every generation, making the tiniest difference but significant enough to really notice every 2 generations
Kevin Backalive first of all, electronic stabilization sucks (look at the edges) second better audio doesn't mean jack shit to other people, and a touch screen is useless since you can't use it in water and when you attach a backpack floaty you can't use it. And guess what if the case breaks on the hero 5 you gotta buy a whole new GoPro. I'll stick to my hero 4 buddy.
Storm Spirit it depends. If you plan to use 4K a lot then yes it's worth an upgrade because the silver has 4K at 15 fps which is basically useless. But if your not a professional photographer then the hero4 silver will be perfectly fine for the average joe. Only reason I returned my hero 4 silver was because I planned to use 4K and the black was perfect for me. Silver edition is great, overall I'd say it's not worth an upgrade at all, if I were you I'd wait till the hero 6 when there is an actual upgrade difference. Just thoughts correct me if you don't agree.
Coming from a vlogging standpoint, I have had a lot of problems with the hero 5 and audio. Its just not quality, so I bought the external adapter for an external mic that you have to buy from GoPro(third party adapters dont show up in the menu but Gopros adapter does, sneaky bastards charge $50 for this stupid adapter) and the $50 adapter SUCKS ASS. It pops and clicks ALL THE TIME, even if I turn the gopro off and on. Its such bullshit and its the reason I'll be returning my hero 5 and buying a hero 4 from offer up for 1/4 of the price. Dont waste your time and money, go for the old 4 silver.
3 years later and I just got my hero5 because I heard the 6series wasn’t better than the 4 or 5 and the 7&8 is to high. The 8 is on my wishlist for Black Friday.
the only real issue i can find with the hero 4 is the lack of OIS, and the fact that if you get the 4 over the 5 you need some kind of gimbal which can easily cost you another 200 bucks, AT LEAST: i m actually on the fence for these two cameras because i want one for bicking, running, dog training, and anything else i can film but the OIS would be crucial for me and getting the 4 would mean getting a stabilizer also. the 4 is notorious for being superior in audio to most of the newer ones but if you need to only get the camera and need ois, then the 5 is the obv choice.
I did notice on the 5 while take photos that there is a 3 second pause before allowing to take another photo. There is only a 1 second pause on the 4black. Not worth an upgrade imo

Slightly change for image quality and some more disappointed is you can't change the camera and wifi name which sometime is hard to recognized. And also wifi button is no longer available and that's mean you must turn on the camera and go to setting then turn on connection to make it standby.

So how does the screen and voice recognition feature play on the battery life? and is the battery the same as the hero4? The fact that the 4 changed battery types from the 3 and 3+ made it harder to keep spare backups although it was a worthwhile change in the end because it was a greatly enhanced lifespan of the battery.

Neither. Go for a Xiaomi Yi 4K camera, check out the reviews on TH-cam, people are saying nice things about it. I have a GPH4B and it is an aweful camera in terms of hardware. The thing gets super hot when I record 4K for 5 mins, battery runs out in minutes even when you are not using it. I don't know about the H5 but it is almost twice the price of Xiaomi Yi 4K, for $150 (GPH5) extra you get waterproofing, voice activation and GPS logging and the video layout mentioned in the video above but other than that the image quality is pretty much the same.
It all depends on how serious you want to take this new hobby of video recording. If you're a beginner, you may consider buying the GoPro Hero3 Black Edition. It records 1080P at 60FPS so you'll be able to get crystal clear video recording. If you're skiing then you can buy a $19.99 head mount and you're set. Obviously, there are some drawbacks with the older versions but it's a much cheaper investment. I've had my Hero3 since August of 2014 and I'm now in the market of selling that unit to upgrade to the Hero5, mainly because I want the drone. This is about the typical life cycle you can expect out of these tech gadgets. I invested about $700 or so. This is including all the accessories. Now you can probably find all of these items for around $300-$450. A new GoPro with all the accessories will put you again in the neighborhood of over $700 easy.
I have a Hero 3 silver and typically connect via the iphone app, I bought a secondary Hero 4 black and either I just dont understand the functionality or the interface to connect to the app is horrible. For example; Hero 3 silver, power on, select hit the bluetooth button and my phone see's the wifi, connect, launch app, start recording. Hero 4 black, power on, there appears to be no wifi button, so I have to select the menu, scroll to wireless, then select pair, open the app, the devices pair, but the lcd screen keeps pairing for 2 minutes. I don't understand it. Anyway The 7 is out now, but Ill probably save some dough and get the 5 black just for the fact of the easier to use touchscreen. Thanks for the comparison.

It does already have lots of great new features especially such as built-in Wi-Fi which was a pain to connect to your phone and waterproof is a big success change along with that new touch display. So I would get it :)
In your videos, there seemed to be a slight improvement in dynamic range, and white balance between the hero 4 black, and Hero 5... As far as upgrade, I do not see a reason to, since there really is very little video improvement... I got the 4 black.. and see no reason to buy the 5 black.. it has a nicer housing but makes it a bit bulkier + almost every accesory that has worked for years in the hero 3 and 4 aren't going to work now, and a touchscreen behind that will drain the battery a tad faster, ok, the new battery is a tad better.. but still.. and while the stabilisation is cool.. is still not good enough.. so I would still use a 3axis gymbal with it (mine for the 4 wont work with the 5).. although this if stabilisation is required.. evt. we can always do it in post.. if seriously needed. So the rest?.. and what an action camera is for: you want good quality video and audio.. and there isn't any improvement on those things.. and from this video.. Im going for the Audio of the 4!.. So if you got none!... any will be amazing!.. get the cheapest you can get!... and if you got the 3/3+ upgrade to anyone you fancy. But if you got the 4.. get the 5 only if you want another camera.. IF you don't have lots of accessories you want or need to use.. cause then, get a 4 again. So.. I don't see a reason for the 5 to even exists!.. sorry.
i have the hero 2 & only really use it for snowboarding. the hero 5 looks great but i'm worried if i fall on snow, will there be a risk of contact on the touch screen changing settings? at least with heros 1-4 you can only change settings by purposely pressing large buttons
I don't have any of those cameras so i would do a test but maybe that would be an interesting test for you to do for TH-cam? Even if the quality is the same you still would have more options re: cropping than if the camera is doing it? If someone wants to send me those 2 cameras I will do the test :-).

I found hero4 blacks refurbished on Ebay for 40 bucks add a feyutech gimble and it's still less than a hero5 black
You need a case because without one, the camera will get scratched and marked over time, plus the rubber shell will rot in time if used in the sea etc

I think it would be a much better upgrade to get the Karma package to use with your hero 4 black then you get awesome stable footage and a sweet drone

I v got 4 black I had 5 and 6 ... and I sell them after 3 days... STILL 4 BLACK FOR ME IS THE TOP.
