I can’t thank you enough! Finally a clear cut example of how to combat resource guarding! 👏🏼🙌🏽💯

This technique works amazingly. It even relaxed him for treats I give him after I did this a couple of times.

I'm so glad I found this. Our 2 years old dog started to resource guard, probably because we got a cat, and now he is resource guarding from us too. She was used to chewing on bones when we were holding it, but now she get's protective. I will definitely try this and I hope it helps.

Same with my dog. She's always been funny about meat bones, so we don't get those anymore, but now she's started with toys. We've kinda let it go and just tell her she's ridiculous, but it needs to stop. These videos are helpful in knowing how to handle it without risking getting bit.

13:40 "you can touch him under the chin while he's eating it out of your mouth" thats gone above and beyond

Do you have a video to help guarding and other dogs approaching?

this is helpful...how many months would this normally take? Our 15 month old has been resource guarding for months and we've resorted to hand feeding. We've had to minimize 'high value' treats/chews (yak's mild bones, marrow bones - things she used to be able to enjoy with us right beside her, in our laps!)

Guys, I'm going to try and follow through with this method. Will report back in a month to let you all know if this works.

Thank you!! This helped my dog with his reactiveness to me, but he is still very reactive with other, my kids in particular.
    Any suggestions?

      The Spirit of Sauntering
Tell your kids to respect the dog’s space and to toss treats to the dog when he or she is not growling at them or giving any warning ⚠️ signs that the dog is uncomfortable 😣. It’s basically everything the guy in the video says. Please be sure to actively supervise your kids around the dog and step in the separate them when the dog is uncomfortable. Good luck 🍀👍!!

I tried a different way that i learned from a different dog trainer youtuber and it made my dog so much worse. Originally he would just guard his food bowl and really good chewy's, then when I tried the other method (which was to lure the dog away from the thing he's guarding, take the thing, then give it back to them once they eat the treat) he now bites me and attacks just when i give him treats while training and table scraps. I've seen a few different people on youtube suggest this method in this video, but is there some other thing i should be doing now that he bites my hand WHILE handing him treats? I've looked all over and I'll keep looking, but I can't really find many instances of a dog getting really super aggressive while hand feeding.

Ask your question of Robert Cabral in CA. He does videos here every day and is pioneering rehab for shelter dogs by educating the staff what to do and why.

That's the same thing my dog does. I think its because they are intelligent.

Well done. Good to find a positive training video about resource guarding. I've been scrolling through a few in order to send a client some links about it. Unfortunately I've seen ones using prong collars and even a shock collar which broke my heart.

I have a dog who also has this same issue he is an Aussie and he is good dog but, he dose not like for anybody to touch his toys and food i have an issue with him. His name is Buddy he is dose wonder my brother is teaching but, i feel like that he needs some instructions from someone to teach our dog. Buddy has bitten before. I wanted to address this to you

What if its resource guarding with a non food item? My puppy does it with socks (hes swallowed one once). I dont want to give him a sock after he drops it for a low value item since he swallowed one before

So put food in a bowl then approach the bowl and see what happens.

'If you have a resource guarding dog if you're going to take something from them make sure you give them something better so they don't attack you' I'm pretty sure that defeats the purpose of taking the thing from the dog.

@@HVACRMICHAEL I can take chocolate or a dead squirrel away by trading it for canned cat food. If I just try to take it I'm going to be bitten badly. The goal of removing the item is safely accomplished and everyone is happy. Except the cat.

Teach and out aus with something less high value...water bottles, 2 balls, anything he like other than food, Once you teach the aus then go back and desensitize the possession over food.

Idc! Biting the hand that feeds you is unacceptable. Period! It makes no sense to reward and reinforce bad behavior.

Good advice, but I do not agree that this is not an aggression problem. Most dogs do not do this.

    • @Moon_samurai128
      @Moon_samurai128 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Dogs do this in the wild. It's a natural instinct. Most domestic dogs don't do it because they've lost that instinct but not all dogs will.

From what I understand, they are born with it and some dogs retained it and some don't.

Omg, my female attacked my male (25 lbs bigger) over a dog sweater she was playing with. Resource guarding can escalate to aggression if not corrected. When it was over we were all covered in blood and severely traumatized. This protocol would not work with her and would be dangerous. I’m teaching her the out command with an ecollar so she never does it again. Dogs guard what’s important to them. Period.

This guy has his hand next to a big dog's mouth with a toy it wants. He is taking a serious risk.
