  • A beautiful English traditional featured in the TV series Sharpe.
    Scenes from:
    Sharpe's Eagles
    Sharpe's Company
    Sharpe's Enemys
    Sharpe's Honour
    Sharpe's Gold
    Sharpe's Battle
    Sharpe's Sword
    Sharpe's Waterloo
Sorry for the too sharp overlapping at some points and the Sean Beans part being too quiet... maybe will fix them in the future :P

When he walked away from Spain...that was the most emotional ending for me. Sharpe had everything he never thought he could have: a family. I was a mess when he held his daughter for the last time. War wasn't the hardest thing for him to do. Giving up his family was 😢.

Maybe each actor only has a limited amount of plot shield to the characters they play. Sean Bean used all of it playing Sharpe.

Over The Hills And Far Away ~ John Tams version: Written by:John Tams
Here's forty shillings on the drum
For those who'll volunteer to come
To 'list and fight the foe today.
Over the hills and far away.
O'er the hills and o'er the main.
    Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain.
King George commands and we obey.
Over the hills and far away.
Then fall in lads behind the drum,
With colours blazing like the sun.
Along the road to come-what may.
Over the hills and far away.
O'er the hills and o'er the main.
    Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain.
King George commands and we obey.
When duty calls me, I must go
To stand and face another foe.
But part of me will always stray
Over the hills and far away.
O'er the hills and o'er the main.
    Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain.
King George commands and we obey.
Over the hills and far away.
    {Through smoke and fire,
and shot and shell, and the very walls of hell,
but we shall stand, and we shall stay,
    O'er the hills and far away}
O'er the hills and o'er the main.
    Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain.
King George commands and we obey.
Over the hills and far away.
{When evil stalks upon the land,
I'll neither hold nor stay me hand,
but fight to win a better day,
    O'er the hills and far away}
O'er the hills and o'er the main.
    Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain.
King George commands and we obey.
Over the hills and far away.
{Let Kings and Tyrants come and go,
I'll stand adjudged by what I know,
    A soldier's life I'll ne'er gainsay,
    Over the hills and far away}
O'er the hills and o'er the main.
    Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain.
King George commands and we obey.
Over the hills and far away.
{Old Wellington he scratched his bum,
He says "Boney lad, thee's had thee fun,
My riflemen will win the day",
    Over the hills and far away}
O'er the hills and o'er the main.
    Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain.
King George commands and we obey.
Over the hills and far away.
{Though I may travel far from Spain,
Part of me shall still remain,
For you are with me night and day,
    Over the hills and far away}
O'er the hills and o'er the main.
    Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain.
King George commands and we obey.
Over the hills and far away.
If I should fall to rise no more,
    As many comrades did before,
Then ask the fifes and drums to play.
Over the hills and far away.
O'er the hills and o'er the main.
    Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain.
King George commands and we obey.
Over the hills and far away.
Over the hills and far away.
O'er the hills and o'er the main.
    Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain.
King George commands and we obey.
Over the hills and far away.
Over the hills and far away.
O'er the hills and o'er the main.
    Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain.
King George commands and we obey.
Here's forty shillings on the drum
For those who'll volunteer to come
To 'list and fight the foe today.
Over the hills and far away.
O'er the hills and o'er the main.

It'd be nice to see something like that, but to be honest it's probably for the best that we didn't have a revival; at least not while the entertainment industry's like it is now. It'd be chock full of PC and social justice contrivances, and the overall quality would go to hell.
Just look at all the franchises that have been given another chance, and how they're pale imitations of what came before. For someone to make something like this today, it'd take a lot more courage and integrity than most would be willing to give.

thought you were going to say GREECE then.
the collective isles of britain are known as great britain as in greater, not great as in fantastic, life wasn't anything at all near to fantastic for the ordinary down trodden working class british who were the countries cannon fodder for often a shoddy officer class.

I'm the son of a Navy Chiefy, from Plymouth . Very biased towards our boys- (and girls now !) - in Uniform! Like my Dad I spend a lot of time away from my loved ones and my home. I have a different kind of command - I command a language classroom ! Now resident in Spain - as of 1 week at this date. Britain is still great, and always will be - if folks like you and me still remember and honour our Armed Services !

Over the hills and far away was written in the 18th Centry. The words are as true now as they were then. Soldiers are always sent off to war and basically forgttenabout. Not now however, as we are all behind our guys especially in that Hellhole Afganhistan. We support you all wherever you are and thank you for what you do for all of us. May God look after you all.

I'm lucky to have all 21 books in the Sharpe series and just reading them again after 10 years. Brings back memories of Sean Penn playing Sharpe in the excellent TV series. The British and French faced each other in battle about 70-100 metres apart. Any further and the musket balls flew anywhere. Those soldiers were brave men. The British could fire faster than the French and were aligned into lines so every soldier could shoot. The French attacked in massive columns with only a small proportion of soldiers able to shoot at the enemy.

Very good! I've been looking for these lyrics for months. Thank you.
The difficulty is that Mr. Tams never sang the song in entirity in any one episode of 'Sharpe'.
Added to favourites because I need a daily fix of 'Sharpe'.

I would love to see a compilation of all the scenes from the show where Hagman sings. He was, by far, my favourite character in the show. I wish there had been just an episode or 2 where there had been a subplot that revolved around him.

fall in lads behind the drum.
with colours blazing like the sun.
along the road to come what may.
    over hills and far away
is the best verse exceot maybe
if i should fall to rise no more.
    as many comrades did before.
then ask the fifes and drums to play.
over the hills and far away.

@lobo81865 "Over the Hills and Far Away" is an very old song, a version of it appeared in John Gays' "The Beggars Opera" (1728), it was of course adapted for the Sharpe TV series. (I've known the song in its original version since I was kid and I'm 48)
