So I used to be a metal vocalist, a pretty good one as a kid, but I managed to force myself into a bad situation where I damaged my throat in some manner. 10 years later I've always wanted to go back, but I clearly have a mental block. I'm a teacher now and so I speak all day every day for a living, so I can't risk my voice, but man oh man I miss this so badly. I'm heavily considering some singing lessons to regain control and stop the mental block because nothing compares to doing metal vocals in terms of catharsis. Brilliant video man.

I lost my singing skills a bit too. Used to do some raspy singing and got scared I'd blow my voice again.

I’ve been doing vocals for 15 or so years. False chord is my area of expertise and I’ve gotten great control over it (self taught). I didn’t find out it was a false chord til more recent years. The fry scream is what would confuse me the most and it’s a style I haven’t really put effort into learning. I’m confident I can learn it... however, when I do try it, it doesn’t really come out the way I want it to and I struggle with it. My guitarist does them well but I haven’t bothered asking him to teach me haha. I’ll be honest I do want to learn it now after watching your videos and I can see how it can become useful in our music.

    • @ExtremeVocalInstitute

These screams are still very pitch based, they’re just very distorted. What you’re hearing is more distortion than true tone behind what’s going on. Without that true tone there wouldn’t be as much depth to the sound. The vocal cords are engaged and involved therefore there is always going to be some small amount of true tone or pitch present.

In vocal school, learned this in my vocal pedagogy class. Basically, every single note creates a group of overtones individual to each person based on the exact shape of their mouth (where we derive the terms “timbre” or “color”). By changing the mouth shape, we change which overtones are accentuated in our sound. This is where we can derive light and dark vowels from. The lighter vowels are vowels where higher overtones are accentuated and lower overtones are dampened, and the opposite is true for darker vowels. In the context of distortion, “lower” screams are created by changing the mouth shape to that of a “dark vowel,” where lower overtones are accentuated and higher ones are dampened, and again, the opposite is true for “higher” screams. The action of the parts creating the initial vibrations (vocal folds and false cords) never changes, only the shape of the space. Hope this makes sense to everyone! Distortion is frowned upon in classical singing school, but I love metal so I’m learning as much as possible about it. David’s a true king ❤️

I would very much like to see a video about False Chord lows vs Fry lows, because I put a lot of fry into my lows, and the way I've always described fry screams when trying to help other people learn is "youre tightening your vocal chords to create passive walls to push air up and out," which is of course contrary to the open throat technique, which I believe you personally implement into your False and Fry low screams, if I'm not mistaken. I just don't understand how. My lows still have that "car screech" fry sound, which is cool for highs, but I want my lows to have more depth and power.

That’s definitely something we can touch on in future videos. If you’re interested we have an entire course on low screams as part of our EVI Now program which covers exactly what you’re talking about here! You can learn more about that at extremevocalinstitute.com/evi-now

Subscribed and liking everything in both senses of the phrase! You're an amazingly soothing instructor and have monstrously amazing harsh vocals. I've been working on developing my lows. You've demystified tons. Will be looking into EVI and private lessons for sure.

I can do it! Well..not exactly that well :)) , but consiering that I've been practicing on my own for like.. 1 month, while trying to sound like Corey Taylor, I'm really gratful with what I have achived so far. Your vids are so, so good, sir! Your explantions are so complex, and yet..so easy to understand, and nobody does that tbh. I'm glad I've found you!

Dude, where have you been all my life? I spent a good 8 years of my youth in different bands screaming my throat out. Experimenting with blowing my voice up for days at a time to know what NOT to do... haha. Kinda not funny though.. now looking back.
I'm just getting into creating music again, and what a perfect timing. You also have an incredible voice to listen to just for speaking, and your screams are excellent. Thank you for sharing this knowledge, you literally blew my mind.
