  • Finally I had the chance to ride the White Rim Trail in Moab, something which I had on my bucket list for so many years. I was very happy that my wife joined me on this trip. So we rode the White Rim Trail, Chicken Corners, Onion Creek and Long Canyon Road two up with my Africa Twin. Beside that I rode a bit at the Slickrock Mountainbike Trail and at Fins and Things. So much fun !!!
    Hope my video gives you all a good idea how wonderful adventure travel on a big bike is.

    • @swegotech8466
      @swegotech8466  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your nice comment !!! The main problem with deep sand when riding 2up is the additional weight on the front tire. So you need to try to keep it floating on top of the sand and reducing the tire pressure is not really an option with all the extra weight you carry with you.

    I can not believe u did that 2 up on an adventure bike.., Very, Very impressive.,!! 5 of us did it last yr the first week in May on Ktm 500’s.., nice time of year to go to Moab.., It was very nerve wracking at times.., even on them bikes, which is why there’s no way I could take my wife on an adventure bike., it’s an unbelievable ride around there though…

    • @swegotech8466
      @swegotech8466  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Stephen for your nice comment, this made my day :-) Yes the White Rim trail is such a wonderful ride. You're right, I also think that for most people a smaller bike like your KTM 500 will give them a better experience on those trails. With the bigger adventure bikes, momentum is king to make it up those hills, especially when riding 2up and there is not much room for any rider mistake. A few times I was in a situation that I would have loved to stop and take a picture, but I knew I had to keep going, because it would be a bad idea to stop in the middle of that hill with a heavy bike. lol.
      Our trip was in September and while in general it was nice, on the White Rim trail it got a bit too hot for my wife (temperatures went up to 100F 38C down by there river and there is zero shade for 7 hours). When you are not used to the heat or are not in perfect shape, this can get exhausting. I also would think that May should be perfect for this trip. However, you need to check on the National park website if the trail is open at that time. Sometimes the river water level gets too high when the snow starts melting in the mountains, so then the trail is not a loop anymore and you need to ride back.

    Great video - love Moab - the grip is amazing, but then loosing it on a 500lb bike in the sandy transitions from one rock area to another was a real challenge for me back in Spring 2017 on my AT. Heading back this Oct subject Can / US border opening on XT250's to hit the more technical trails. Good for you getting out and about in Moab 2 up on the AT!!!!

    • @swegotech8466
      @swegotech8466  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sean, you are right. The transition when riding down a rock into the sand is the hardest part of riding a 500lbs bike there because you have even more weight on the small front tire in that moment. Reducing the tire pressure might help you there a lot (didn't try it because I had no time to use my compressor). Like you said, Moab area is amazing for riding motorcycles. And sure a XT250 will be even more fun there for most riders. It all depends on how you get there. For us the ride from Vegas to Moab was also a lot of fun, so I left my truck at home and took the big adventure bike instead. But for sure this limited my choices of trail I can ride a bit.

I've seen there are some really high setps/stairs in the rock and 2up the ground clearance will be really an issue I guess. So I think White Rim trail was close to the limit of what I can ride 2up, I am not brave enough to try much harder trails with my wife on the back of the bike (can't risk a divorce here. lol)

      Thank you for your nice comment. It took her a while to get used to offroad riding on the back of the bike. Thankfully the engine is loud enought to block out all the screaming. lol. No, she is doing great, but when you watch the video you will notice that I start laughing when riding up Murphy Hogback
      . The reson for this was, because I could hear her "praying" through the Intercom, which was super funny :-).
      You are right that one bad fall might change her mind forever. So far I got a lot of trust from her, because she managed to crash her own motorcycle once so bad that she got a free helicopter flight because of it. So she feels more safe on the back than riding by her own now.

      @swegotech8466  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you !!! Hahahaha, yes I knew that I will get comments because of my "choice" of footwear. lol. To tell you the whole story: On our last day when we were driving home, we wanted to hike to a few arches in the park. Also my boots were still soaked from the water crossings the day before. So I thought I will just wear jeans and sneaker and we ride with the bike from one arch to the next one and do the hikes without wasting time by changing clothes.
      However, suddenly I had to think about how cool some pictures from Long Canyon road looked and I realized we were close to it (Dead Horse Point State Park
      ). So from what I remembered reading in those forums it was just a super simple road, maybe even paved. So we rode down from the top and to my surprise the sand there was super deep with huge holes from all those Jeeps. Damn, that wasn't something I expected there at all, otherwise I would never ever rode there with sneakers on and a fully loaded bike 2up. lol.
      "Bad decisions make great stories".... and I am living this :-) !!!
      With sneaker I had to be super careful about not getting my foot/legs under the hard cases, because this stuff can break your bones.

    Best big bike off road riding skills I have seen yet. You must ride dirt bikes also? Most riders I see take it slow and cautious in sand and that can really cause problems. And the Hogback hill climb even had me on my toes but, that’s the way to do it. Man I can’t wait to get out there

    • @swegotech8466
      @swegotech8466  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your nice comment !!! This made my day :-) I owned some dirtbikes in the past. I sold them all now because I mainly ride my Africa Twin and rode the dirt bike only once every year. In general I would say that my riding skills on a dirt bike are just average and most of my friends are much much better riders. However I am a good sand rider.
      I do not stand up on the bike a lot, but because of that I am used to ride when I sit on the bike instead of standing. Guess this helps my 2up riding skills a lot, because I am so used to it. Also I am strong and can handle the weight of a 1000cc bike offroad so on the big bike I am maybe a bit better than others. This bike is just the prefect fit for me.
      The key in riding these big bikes is to keep the momentum... when you are too slow you will get in trouble soon. This is why I rode up Hogback faster than I needed, because I was expecting the worst. lol. To be honest with you, riding the White Rim trail in this heat (up to 100F) and 2up was about my personal limit of my riding skills. I never dropped the bike once on that trail, but it was right at my skill limit.
      It was one of the most impressive trails I ever rode, beautiful landscape and I am thinking about doing it again :-)

    • @swegotech8466
      @swegotech8466  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you David for your nice comment :-)
      I ride my Africa Twin with the stock spring. For sure this setup is too soft, so the bike does not have the correct sag setting which has a negative effect on the handling. However, compared to my CRF450R which has custom suspension for my exact weight, my Africa Twin is my touring bike. I won't start at a race with it, so even when the setup is not perfect I can simply slow down a bit and it will handle fine.
      But when you are willing to spend a few extra dollars, you can improve the Africa Twin suspension a lot.

    Ok, finally someone posting some 2 up riding.... can your passenger answer this question - how comfortable is the AT pillion seat? How long in the saddle until you are squirming? I am considering an AT but am nervous about spending that kind of cash without it being comfortable and secure enough for my teenage son on the back...he rides with me nearly all the time. Some feedback from the pillion's POV would be appreciated.

    • @swegotech8466
      @swegotech8466  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mainly bought the bike, because I wanted to do longer tours together with my wife. In general the comfort for my wife on the AT is really good. However, it's not on Honda Goldwing level. Michaela was very happy when I got the box with the back rest which was a big improvement for her on longer tours.
      So 4-6 hour rides are zero problem for her. On our longer trips (8-16 hours per day) it can get a bit challenging. The problem is not the cushion of the seat, more the space and the seat position. For example when my wife sits on the back of the bike, I need to sit a bit more to the front than I like. Sitting nearly on the gas tank is not really fun. So on the really long riding days, we both somtimes stand up for a while when riding, so we can stretch our legs a bit. But our tours are often much more extreme than what other people do on those bikes. For sure I can recommend the Africa Twin for 2up travel.

    When is the best time of year to ride the White Rim Trail?

    • @swegotech8466
      @swegotech8466  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good question. I am not an expert about the trail, but in general there are a few things you should know about it:
      When the snow in the mountains starts to melt, the river water level at the end of the trail gets sometimes so high that you can not finish the trail and would need to turn around. You can find information about this on the national park website.
      In the summer it can get really hot at the bottom of the trail. So when you are not a very good rider, used to the heat and are in really good shape, I would try to avoid this. I rode the tour in September and while for me it was still OK my wife reached her temperature limit on our tour (so for her a tour in August would be too hot). We both live in Las Vegas and are used to hot desert weather. Furthermore you need to think about stuff which can happen on the trail. Like you get stuck, need to repair a tire or fix something else on the bike. In those situations the temperature makes a difference. I repaired tires out in the desert at 115 Fahrenheit without any shade and this is really a workout. lol.
      Also the winter months and mud/rain is something to avoid.
      So my personal best time of the year for the White Rim Trail would be October. But again I am no expert on this, maybe some other people here can give you their opinion about it.

    Nice. The suspenders on your AT got one heck of a workout! How many days did it take you to ride all that?

    Great vid!! I’ve got the same bike for the same reason. My wife and I like to do week camping/riding trips out west. The AT is a great bike for that. Have you done anything to your suspension? I’m considering at least having mine resprung and valved for 2up riding with camping gear.

      Happy to hear that you enjoyed this video. My Africa Twin is nearly stock. I have the rear preload on the highest setting. However this is not enough to get the correct sag setting. So a suspension upgrade would be necessary for perfect handling for people in my weight class, especially when 2up riding with luggage.
      However, I have a custom suspension on my dirtbike, but on the AT I have no problem to ride slower. It's not a racing bike for me, just a touring bike and as you can see in the video it still works good enough to enjoy the stock suspension. At least for what I do.

      @@swegotech8466 Yeah, that's what they say, you're not the only one who recommends this setup. In my case I need to strike a balance with doing a long tarmac rides. I like to do 1-day trips 200-300 miles but I also love going light off-road. Have you heard any opinion about MotoZ GPS tyres?

    • @swegotech8466
      @swegotech8466  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@czaras_ my friend had the Motoz GPS on his Africa Twin when we went riding together in the desert. My bike was on knobby tires, but mostly he was able to keep up with me (I was a bit better in the deep sand). However, he has much better riding skills than I have and a lot of desert racing experience, so it is hard to say how good the tires really are. They worked for him really good. For light offroad riding I would also choose the GPS or maybe try the Dunlop Trailmax Mission Tire. However, the TKC80/Rallz combo works also OK on pavement and will be better offroad...

    Do you think you could take the Versys 300 on this trail ? thanks anyone

    • @swegotech8466
      @swegotech8466  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Versys 300 is at least not a very heavy bike. I would think that the main problem for you would be the ground clearance. Some of those rocks/steps can be a bit tricky. However I was riding 2up with a heavy loaded bike, so I also had to ride around those rocks instead of just going over them. I never rode the Versys 300, but because it is a more road focused motorcycle I am sure the stock skid plate won't help you much. So I would maybe upgrade the skid plate on the Vesys, because you do not want to risk to crack the engine case in the middle of nowhere which will end in an expensive tow truck bill. Hope my answer could help you a bit.

      While editing I thought about it, but I have the quiet stock exhaust on my bike. Reality is that without music you hear mainly the windnoise and the rattling of the chain. lol. So music is a much better choice here.
