Sir, you have the gift of delivering precise, clear, easy-to-understand instructions. I tuned a mountain bike derailleur from troublesome and noisy to quieter and smoother after viewing this video. Thank you for saving me $40 at my LBS.
I've never commented on a youtube vid before but had to make an account just to say this is by far the best video I've found on the topic. Kudos to you, sir. Thank you.
The cassette on my 2 week old bike started making all sorts of noises. These simple instructions saved me a trip back to the bike shop. No noises and shifting perfectly. Legend!
I've decided to learn how to fix and tune my own bike. I've found your video extremely helpful. I'm putting it in my favorites. Thank you for making and posting it here.
I have once again learned so very much from your video, amazing what happens when you just take a little time to understand bicycle/derailleur mechanics!! You have saved me many trips to the cycle shop, where they do it in 'seconds' and now I can truly understand the absolute simplicity of bike gears. Thank you much my friend!! Jim
Hi Saul; Thanks for the great information. I just had my bike shipped across country which upset my gears. Except for changing the tires I've never worked on a bike before and considered taking it to the bike shop. After watching your video I tried it and it was so simple. I just gotten back from a test ride and it rode perfectly. I'm going out for a long ride after work tomorrow. I can't wait. Thanks a ton.
These are v good tutorials. There are so many around but the delivery is often too fast, doesn't actually show (film) them and, most importantly, assumes too much base knowledge from the viewer. Not these from Saul; very patient and complete. Well done, I've used several of them and one concentrated viewing does the trick before completing the tasks easily and successfully.
Wonderful explanation. Clear, well presented and easily understandable. Genius. Now, to sort out my clicky gears on my vintage Orange mountain bike, cost me £30... Not for sale.......
I am in love with Saul. He could teach me to do anything: Pack a parachute; remove a brain tumor; defuse a thermo-nuclear weapon: Nothing would be stressful with Saul's calm, steady voice guiding me through each step. He is Yoda but without being annoying. -"Nothing could be simpler".
The barrel adjuster on the handle bar is reduntant. You can adjust either one. The one on the deraileur allows you to see the imediate results of your adjustment. If you set the upper barrel in the middle you can loosed or tighten the cable.
+sddogtrainer set H and L limit screws of the RD w/o cable attached. Move the RD manually with your hand to ensure it's range of operation will not throw the chain past the largest or smallest cog, while pedaling. Set B-limit screw to allow sufficient distance between top jockey pulley and largest cog for smooth operation and no binding. Only after limits are set correctly, connect shift cable and tune in the correct tension. The Jockey pulleys should be in line with the cog above them in each gear. If you cannot get this alignment, you may have a damaged cage (which sometimes can be bent back straight) on your RD, or other mechanical fault with RD, which means replace RD. Many shifting problems that can't be corrected with these steps means damaged RD or component (cage) on the RD. External RD's are exposed to lots of danger, and often get bent/damaged during a crash.
Is shifting "under load" different (vs shifting on repair stand) because of rider weight flexing the frame? Also thanks for making a derailleur video focusing on the shifting between gears, this is just what I was having trouble with.
It has been 2 years since you've asked this but I'll answer this for the sake of other wonderers: YES. It works exactly the same way. Turn it clock-wise to loosen the cable, turn it other way to tighten the cable.
Thanks very much Saul for this video. May I ask though, when you reset the barrel adjustment to zero tension at the derailleur, what do you do with the barrel adjustment up by the handlebars? Do you turn that adjustment to zero tension also?
What do you think is the cause behind a bike shifting smoothly "upwards" (i.e. from 1 to 2 to 3 etc), but not "downwards" (4 to 3 to 2 to 1)? I have to overshift one in order to get it to go down a gear, and then shift back up so the shifter's index matches. M.
Magci teh point about turning aditional 1 1/2 turns is key, they missed this point on other vids left me with chattering in the lower gears and killed my ride under load on teh hills!
OK thanks very much tell me if I install one alternator very low speeds rpm in back wheel aftert that remove the padel n padel palec install one very weak motor 220 or 12 so it's vorking like generators or not . Because I see in many vedio s when mountain is come n rider change the gear it's easily going up to mountain without any ressitencs it's possible or not sory for English my English is no Hi-Fi answers me ithink is possible

This was amazingly helpful, I spent an hour today messing up my gears, after watching this I had them working perfectly within 5 minutes. Thanks

This is the very best instruction on tuning gears yet.! Thanks so much!
This guy is awesome, I love learning from him. He's like a bicycle Jedi Master.

Thanks for posting. You made it look easy to do.
Wonderful. My gears are always annoyingly slightly off, never knew about the 'one and a half'. Thanks.
Awesome tutorial, I've just done all my gears on my MTB.
Thank you very much for your clear and precise instructions.
Awesome asmr video!
Thank you.
Maximize your chain tension and wrap by shifting onto a big cog on the front and a big cog on the back.
fantastic videos many thanks folks just what i was looking for just subscribed ...col....scotland uk
Very easy to understand, very helpful. Thank you.
Initial adjustments should be made on smaller chain ring if you are using a double or the middle ring if you have a tripple. But test all rings.--Saul
excellent video(s). perfect pace. nice camera work. on this video, what about the limit screws? how are they important and should they be adjusted?
+sddogtrainer Thank you. Be sure to view Fine Tuning Your Gears. th-cam.com/video/IDJU2KTrXbg/w-d-xo.html
For Limit Screw adjustment.

Great gear tips!! Thumps up!!
Nicely done. Thanks for the detailed info!

Excellent - easier than I thought - that'll save time and money on minor but fundamental maintenance.
you just saved the day for me ...great video...thank you !!!
Thx for explaining in lamer terms for the noob's here (myself). Bike wasn't shifter into lower gears right away, so had to tighten the barrel tension.
That is a fantastic explanation. Thank you.
Thanks for an awesome instructional video!
Great video, but I do not have a barrel adjuster on my rear mech.
So do I just use the one at the shifter?
Anyone please?

Great Video! Thank you!
You are welcome.
Brilliant! Your videos are great. Thank you very much.
howartthou aexcelent video thank you
That sounds like a resonable explanation. As log as it shifts without noise continuing after the shift it is probably fine.

what chainring should we be using to make the adjustments shown in the video?
that was very clear Thank you for posting
thank you for posting!

Just what i needed, thank you.
Start in the middle chain ring.
There's no mention of setting the H & L limit screws first
great video.. you just saved me 40$ of bike shop fees!
What about the limiting screws. Aren't those important?
Things always work diffidently under load...test under as well as on the work bench.
Saul .. you done good :-)
