Whoo hoo! you know a video is great when it gives you that "Eureka" moment. I've been knocking my head over why the front derraileur wouldnt shift to the largest spoke and within the first 2 minutes of your video you cleared it all up, Thanks!
i had a hand down bicycle which had lots of problem sitting on my garden shed, for this summer holiday i decided to work on it and your videos were of great help thank you
Thank you so much for the simple instructions Sir. I have been researching simple instructions over derailleur adjustments and fine tuning gears for about 2 weeks, I have not located one explaining the steps in detail to succeed. My mother and I have mountain bikes of our own, when maintenance is needed TH-cam never fails. Accurate Knowledgeable Content like this. Thank you Sir!
@velotique: I am what most people call an "expert", or close to it, in MANY different fields. Everything from agriculture to Computer Systems Analysis & Operations, but it had been several years since I had worked on a bike with multiple gears. I had no idea what I was doing with this adjustment, but it was 3a.m. & I had to get it finished so my wife could go to work at 6am. I just want to say thank you so much! I couldn't have done it w/o your excellent video! I truly appreciate it!
I VERY MUCH ENJOYED, AFTER SPENDING HALF A DAY,TRYING TO ADJUST MINE,LOOSENING THE CABLES WAS THE SECRET,I HAD LOOKED AT OTHERS !! yours was the most concise.
Great job explaining this! I must have watched about 20 of these videos, and yours is the only one that made sense... lol... most guys have problems explaining this... Thank you!
Appreciate the demo for the front Derailleur, I have memory loss so I made a copy of this demo on paper so I know how to adjust my limit screws on my Campagnolo record 11 speed Front Derailleurs.
Thanks. Your video quality, clear speech, everything helped me to understand the concept and fix my bike after watching this. Also watched the other videos and makes me want to go next trip to ride bike with u. Thanks!!!
This is an old video but thank you so much! I really appreciate it. Right now I am having problems with the big gears cage (1, 2, 3) on my 24 gears mountain bike as my relative dislodge it by dumping my bike down on the ground which hit the corner of a pavement that dislodged the gear. From looking at it today, the gear doesn't appear to be broken nor bent (I hope not because it is expensive to replace and he tried to resolve it by hammering it back into position, UGHH!!) but I would have to start from scratch to tune the gears to correction as you've demonstrated from 1:10secs in your video. I'm nervous about it as I am completely inexperienced, and it is hard to find a bicycle repair store as I have recently moved to a different country. Crossing my fingers for all to go perfectly tomorrow as I'll work on my bike whilst watching your video on my ipad tomorrow for guidance. Wish me luck!
Very kind of you to reply so soon, Velotique, but I thought if the limit screws are both fully out it would be the cable tension that's the problem. I shall have go anyway. (I wish I could just bring the bike your shop, but shipping it from the UK...)
that is the same thing that happened to me gears were fine ended up being the chain itself I don't know if you fixed it or not but its quick and easy to try. it may be a stiff link don't let it get worse like I did
When the chain is on the smallest chainring, the front deraileur cable should be tight enough to just eliminate slack. It should not be moving the front deraileur from the slack (smallest chainring) position. It must be tight enough to eliminate any free play and make the front deraileur immediately resposive. --Saul
Limit screws just make sure your chain doesn't fall off on the inside and out. Think of it as a guard rail for your chain. You want it close, but if it's too close it will rub. If you have a rubbing problem when they're super loose it's more than likely a tension problem or derailleur position problem. Rubbing can occur if tension screws are too tight, because that is like making your "guard rail" too close to, or in the middle of the road.
Great vids. Does this process apply to a mountain bike with a triple chainring? If not, could you recommend a video for mtb? Many thanks, you do good work.
Thanks for the info 1 point I have watched 4 vids on this subject not one demonstrates the 1 millimetre or as other have said use a penny to set the height of the front derailleur I get the concept but a actual demo with a feller gauge would help Thanks for the info it helped
Awesome Tutorial really help . Quick question what if my front derailer is a to stiff ? and when i change my gear wiers in what gear do I start it from
@FUTREMARINE77 If it jumps on the jockey wheels it is possible that you have some sticky links in your chain. Try to identify the exact location on the chain and free up the links or replace the chain. See my Chain Replacement video for details...Saul
Thank you! Very informative! Can you help with this question... If I back pedal in order to raise my pedal then my chain drops! How can I fix that??? I bike on high gear.
Hi, this is my problem too. The outer limit screw on front derailleur is nearly fully out. I have just replaced the cable in case it was too stretched. Should I loosen the mount, reset both limit screws to their middle position, then start setting outer/inner limits again from there? Many thanks.
Sometimes when shifting from small to big chainring, the chain gets stuck in between. Does this mean the fd height is low and i need to add maybe a mm, or does this mean fd heiggt needs to be lessened?
Can this method be used to limit so much as to only shifting to 2 of 3 total chain rings? As in I don't want it to shift to the smallest ring only to the 2 largest.
If you were once able to shift into the large chain-ring the most likely cause is your cable is now loose. Shift. into the small chain ring and tighten the cable to remove any slack.
Ok I have a triple and the highest chain ring I had in front was 48t but I put a 52t I have 6 speeds in the rear is it possible I just can't adjust my front derailleur 😕
Yes. You can use a narrower chain in place of a wider chain. Chain width limits the number of gears on your cassette. More gears take less space and require narrower chains.
I need help! I have a GT bike with an Alivo Shimano front derailleur and I can't seem to move the cage to get aligned with the outer chain ring. What tool do I need? Thanks.
Jonathan Chuck Undo the front cable before loosening the front derailleur mount. An allen or hex wrench is all you need to loosen the attachment band or mounting bolt.
My chain falls of the big ring when I am peddling and not changing gears, any ideas? My local bike shop says its fine, but it happened a few times today...
Ok so i have a question, my front gear shifter wont go to its highest setting, it becomes hard to change after 2.. I also can't get it to down shift to 2 after i finally get it onto 3. Like the chain won't move to the second cog. I have to shift to 1 so it skips 2 all together. Hopefully that made sense lol.
Check for interaction with cable tension and shift lever. 1)Test the low limit screw by disconnecting the cable. 2) Test High Limit. Shift front shifter to lowest front gear position. Anchor cable with maximum cable tension. Shift to Largest front gear. If high limit screw has no effect increase cable tension. Hope this helps.
hey, when I'm riding in easier gears the ride will be choppy. I will be pedaling then it will randomly stop giving power to the wheel but i am still pedaling then go right back to normal. What is this?
+Garo Barsemian If the chain is skipping over the gears when you apply high loads, IE: standing on pedals, the gear and or chain are worn out. If the chain is gliding or missing the gear under light loads the derailleur cable needs adjustment.
I can't shift the gear on my bike to gear 1 (rear) when the front gear is 1 aswell. and my bike chain makes funny noises when the front gear is on 2 , 3 ?
@@velotiqueBetterWatchSaul It's rubbing when i'm on high/high gear (biggest cog on the front, small on the rear, and when when on 3-4 gear on the back).Does it means i should adjust the "h" limit screw?
Derailleur is French for de-railer so it depends how pedantic you want to be. I guess the instructor is Canadian by his accent and he pronounces it differently to 'muricans. Thanks for the video Velotique. This is the second time I've used it to tweak my road rig.

Thanks for this video! Finally a video that shows in detail what the screws are for!
Thanks!
Love the jazzy intro music, and I found this video so informative. It's going help me enjoy my riding this summer.

the only video online that properly teaches how to adjust the h limit screw. for those who facing the same problem. remember to overshift then tighten

this has got to be one of the most educational videos out there, nicely done!
I wish all vids regarding bikes were explained this clear. thx
WOO HOO! Got my front derailleur working perfectly now. Thanks for the great vid!!

Yes. Loosen the mount and reposition your front deraileur to extend the range of adjustment.
Simple and clear explanation, well done!
Thank you
Well explained and simple tutorial.. Thankyou very much as I saved my bike from selling it off....
Lol, I've felt like that before too
Glad it helped.
Really good video. Simple explanations helped me a lot. Thank you. keep 'em coming!
Thank you.
velotique when you're indexing your gears do you start with the barrel adjuster screwed all the way in or all the way out ?
Start with the barrel screwed all the way in, so the cable is the slackest. This gives you the maximum range to tighten the cable.
These videos are top notch! Thank you sir

if your chain is clean and your crank arm is hard anodized it is minimal. It also gets scratches if the chain falls off.

what can you do if your outer limit screw is fully loosened and the derailleur is still hitting the chain?
Same process on MTB's and other triples.

Can this method be used to limit so much as to only shifting to 2 of 3 total chain rings? As in I don't want it to shift to the smallest ring only to the 2 largest.
Sometimes this is possible. The limit screws on the derailleur have a limited range.
Nice its a clear demo video than the other videos😤😠
How tight should the cable be when the chain is on the inside (small) chainring?
I've got trouble shifting to the large chain ring which you've never addressed. How is that accomplished?
If you were once able to shift into the large chain-ring the most likely cause is your cable is now loose. Shift. into the small chain ring and tighten the cable to remove any slack.
Ok I have a triple and the highest chain ring I had in front was 48t but I put a 52t

Yes
Good video, but you should say "derailleur" more.

DrSlang lol
lol it actually helped! I didn't know its name and already learnt it by watching the vid only once ;)
I need help.. can I install 6.57mm wide chain in place of 7.2mm wide chain.. I think it will result in shifting issue..
Yes. You can use a narrower chain in place of a wider chain. Chain width limits the number of gears on your cassette. More gears take less space and require narrower chains.
Thank you so much for your time and quick response. Bless you. Cheers.
You're welcome.

2) Test High Limit. Shift front shifter to lowest front gear position. Anchor cable with maximum cable tension. Shift to Largest front gear. If high limit screw has no effect increase cable tension. Hope this helps.

putting it this close to the gears with the wire this tight makes it literally impossible for my bike to shigt
the shift control now does not move regardless of applied pressure
Does the lever move when the cable is disconnected? Does the derailleur move into position when pushed by hand with cable disconnected?
