Taking a long overdue break from YouTube

  • I can't keep going on like this, my work life balance is off and I need to take time off from work. Even though it's just a week, it's been hard for me to actually take the time off. As a content creator, I feel so much pressure to keep making content everywhere. And with all of the platforms, podcasting, social media, publishing, it feels like I need to be everywhere. I've needed this break for a while and I hope you can understand. With that said, I will not be publishing content next week. And when I come back, my goal is to hold myself accountable so I don't get to this kind of place again. And I want you to hold me accountable too. Hopefully by sharing my story and why I need to take time away (fully off of social media) to recharge and restore, will inspire some of you who may be in a similar situation, to do the same. If you're feeling burnout or burnt out with your work or job, and feel like your work exhaustion is too much, this may be something to consider. We've been through a lot these last 2-3 years and burnout is a real thing that we struggle with. It's important to take care of your needs and remember that everything is going to be okay if you take time away to take time for your own personal health. Sending you all so much love. See you in a couple weeks.
Kati Morton is discussing burnout and taking a break from TH-cam and social media to recharge and focus on feeling better and having healthier work life balance.

It shows that you've been putting in the work and are continuing to put in the work. May God comfort you, strengthen and guide you as you replenish and recalibrate. As a fellow therapist I felt like everything you said was coming straight from my brain. It's that reminder every day that you tell people "you can't pour from an empty cup" but your own cup is bone dry. Then the imposter syndrome starts. Everyone needs a reset button once in a while, this was a wonderful reminder of that, thank you.

love the imposter syndrome explaination! I did just that. I was completely burned out from my line of work. I did become an imposter, pretending to my clients that I was happy to be their and behaved like "Merry Sunshine", so I was pleasing to the client. I was feeling anything but. I got real good at hiding what I really wanted from people. Eventually it caused a nervous breakdown of sorts.

There’s no way that anyone has completed each and every one of your journal prompts or tried to enact every single piece of advice.
You’ve put so much out there. There a whole other part of healing… taking personal action. You can only get so far by listening. So you are leading by example!

Tips that helped me with burn out: I walked 5 miles everyday for the last 2 years, still going and looking forward to my walks, walking is easy enough for me to sustain long run, helps get my body circulating and not stagnate. For 30 mins/day, I stretched and foam rolled my back, shoulders and neck, helped reduced my tensions, helped with my sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Your vagus nerve exercises are helpful too.
Thank you for helping me these past few years. I couldn't afford a professional, but your suggestions/strategies have helped me tremendously. You have given a lot to so many people all over the world. You deserve time to rest and recharge Kati, have a good day Kati : ]

We all need to step away, focus on our own mental well-being, and protect our peace. Burnout is a difficult thing to recover from and takes a lot of time, setting healthy boundaries, and self-care in order to re-emerge a more resilient person. It’s not easy to do. It’s not selfish. It’s about taking care of oneself. Step back, learn to breathe again, and take care of you. 🙏

Katie you have to take care of yourself first. I learned this the hard way. I'm coming out of a year long depressive episode and many days I still struggle. You're videos have helped me immensely.
The things I do for myself now are: setting boundaries as to how much I have to give to others, meditation, exercise, journalling, and trying to eat well.
Please know that we're all thinking of you. Take all the time you need. ❤️

I’m partially self-employed and I ran a virtual church for six months during the first lockdowns. It was a lot and I burnt out. I find that timetabling in downtime works brilliantly. And I totally get the Groundhog Day reference. One of your tips which really helped me was taking time to do exactly what I want to do without guilt or worrying about other people. My therapist calls this “doing violence to the everyday”. On those days I follow my body and see where I’m taken. If I do that, I usually end up in places that nourish the soul - places that I need to be. And maybe you can’t get into boundaries because… you need to set boundaries between work and rest! You are amazing Kati, take all the time you need ❤️🧡💛

I love having productively unproductive days. I find that when I allow myself a day every now and then to be unproductive, I set myself free of any expectations/responsibility and it helps reduce the overwhelm with work and personal life. Sometimes it can be a bit of reverse psychology... nothing is planned yet it just happens that I end up doing productive things. But it's nice because there's no pressure.
When you are ready, I would love to hear about the things that you do to take care of yourself. Hope you have an energizing break, Kati.

I sure can relate. I have been self employed for many years and have always found it hard to relax and go on vacation, even bringing my work with my on vacation. The past few years for me have consisted mostly of working, running a household & taking care of older pets with health problems. I feel pressure to make as much money as I can to help pay for increasing prices of everything and the uncertainty with everything going on in the world is depressing. I sometimes don't leave the house for days and have become really burned out and an my fuse is becoming increasingly shorter. I do find it helps when I have something planned to look forward to. I can't remember the last vacation I had but do have a 2 day trip planned to go to the mountains next week with my family which I think will really help improve my attitude.

Feel driven to be productive because of those connections, but also don't beat myself up when I am less productive because of those connections. Serving and helping others is so rewarding and fulfilling but also exhausting and once we are burned out, EVERYTHING seems like yet another thing we HAVE to do (even pulling the weeds and going to Costco). I am so sorry you are feeling this way and at the same time it is so, SO validating for all mental health professionals who believe or are expected to just keep going all the time. You are not alone and you deserve all the time off you need to take care of yourself and your needs. Love and light 💜

You're not the only one in this place. You're not alone. I was "essential" when everything hit the fan. I moved positions into digital fulfillment. I threw myself into that just to avoid all the chaos & negativity surrounding me constantly. I still do this if I'm being completely honest.
Take care of yourself. You can't pour from an empty cup. I'm certainly not going anywhere. Praying for you! ❤️

I’ve been going through this and developed ME/CFS, which became severe (bedridden/paralyzed sometimes) due to Long Covid. As I get better, I can think more clearly. Moving forward, I’ll be building my online business working 4 days/week and take a few days or a week off every month for pure creativity and me time. You can also try every quarter too. The thing is the online world can be insanely taxing, especially with all these ads telling us we’re not doing enough and in many cases, super ambitious personalities and traumas of not feeling enough, or being taught conditional love based on productivity. It’s ridiculous! Please let me know how you’re doing now and what changes have helped you, I’m happy to learn from you too.

Thank you for having the courage and strength to share your authentic experience with us. Your story is reassuring and healing for the likes of us who have also experienced burnout. I'm a self-employed documentary director and have burnt out a few times....so I know what you're going through! Even though it can be hard to, I've found that taking a break is the best thing ever....but you have to take a proper break where you really let go of work and have fun. And when you get back to work you rediscover your passion and energy. I've also found that taking a full day every week for me, with nothing scheduled in my calendar, is amazingly restorative - I call it my flow day. A 4 day workweek is what I aspire to and has been shown to increase productivity to greater amounts than a 5day week...amazing! In the yoga world they teach about balancing the divine feminine (stillness, flowing, internal, creativity), with the divine masculine (action, structure, do do do, work) - this has been very helpful for me and would be worth looking into to help find your balance in a holistic way (but of course I'm sure you'll have many wonderful resources of your own). Sending you so much love and gratitude for what you do! Now go put your feet up and have some fun :) xxxx

Take as much time as you need. Your health and well being is the most important thing. I'm also self-employed in the healthcare field and the burnout from the past few years has been huge. This year I've also been learning to take time off and making more time for myself. I've learned that everyone will be okay while I'm gone, and I am healthier when I give myself rest and time off. Take care and be well.

Remember the old saying "It is not about you - it is about serving others."
It is great that you are explaining the stresses and anxieties you suffer. It is time that commenters give back some of the love that you have given us. And you can see the love! I can!
Lastly, Kati, your work is valuable. You are trying to heal people.

Wow...I needed this right now. My last "holiday" for more than a night or two was in 1994, and the last time I went away for even a night was 7 years ago. I feel like I'm just going through the motions, not enjoying the things I used to enjoy, and escaping into less than healthy behaviours. Your description of burnout really hit home for me. I would love to hear how you choose to look after yourself if you decide to share anything like that. It's definitely something I need to evaluate in my own life. This helped me look at my life in a new way, instead of thinking I am just experiencing depression. Thank you for sharing.

You have my support. I am self employed too, and it is far too easy to run for weeks working every day without a break. The fun of being successful, the fear if I stop then work will dry up, wondering if my success is a flash in the pan. But through therapy this year for other reasons the tools of self compassion and love have filtered into my work too. My work is " creative", and I realise that my place of creative energy becomes dim if I push things too hard for two long. I build in break days now, at regular intervals and do things I enjoy- walking in the forest, beachcombing, a yoga workshop, a day of massage or a facial. And I actually have come to see these self nourishment gifts to myself as part of my success in life-and in work. My ever supportive husband totally gets it- if I tell him I have had a day collecting river stones or meeting a friend- he will smile and say " that too is your work". Keeping our muse or inner flame kindled and healthy is not only part of who we are, but what we do. If I have had a couple of days off work I return with new passion, new ideas, and slip into the flow easily. Finding the balance is always fine tuning. As my yoga teacher says- the work is in the wobble.

Hi Katie. I just found your channel. As a middle-aged UK guy who's suffered with Depression/Dysthymia for over 30 years, I think it's important to be kind to yourself, and remember all the people you've already helped during the last 11 years. Perhaps it's time to get into nature, perhaps an extended camping trip, or anything else that works for you. Having a healthy work/life balance is crucial. I'm going to watch quite a lot of your videos over this weekend, especially your earlier videos.
Take time out for yourself, and everything will fall into place. I focused on my mental and physical health, after wasting 2+ years not getting the help I needed from my local Doctor, so I began helping myself. Good luck with everything ! - You're amazing !

Good on you for leading by example! I've been noticing more and more of my favorite TH-camrs taking actual time off. Like, no pre recorded stuff, just letting people know a little in advance that they're gone next week. And it makes me happy to see that. I have worked for myself for many years and I know how you can get stuck in the cycle of just constantly grinding. Take actual time off everything, regularly! For me it makes me more happy to work and I actually miss work after some time off because I'm motivated after taking care of myself.

Videos, but I think the hard time you are going through has and will make you even more relatable. I have been struggling myself, I’ve been a single parent for 26 years now and still not making much more than kids do at fast food places now. It is years of struggle, daily trying to be optimistic, daily trying to push through and like the saying goes “help isn’t coming.” Not to be a downer but I’m learning I have to be my own support system and still trying to learn how to do that. Hugs to you, you will get through this and maybe, just maybe put smiles will come back again to stay.
