My Grandfather always scraped and brushed the underside of his mower deck ( push mower ) , and then , using an old paint brush , he would " paint " the underside with old motor oil . Not much stuck on there after he used it , but he repeated the process every time . Grandpa was quite a man .
Every 'end of season' session for me is: Change oil/filter, air filter, fuel filter, Check plugs (replace as needed), pull blades (clean and sharpen (that's a pretty regular task anyway)), grease everything, drop deck and clean (I also blow the deck off EVERY mow) top and bottom, as well as check spindles, pullys and belts. It's a 3+ hour job, and I HATE it, but my 10+ year old JD says "I LOOK FABULOUS" because of this. I will admit, the deck is showing it's advanced age with dirt, scratches, scuffs, and more, but overall it is in amazing shape. My 30+ year old Toro Recycler will attest to my maintenance techniques as it still fires on the 1st or 2nd pull. I will say, poor girl is getting long in the tooth...she used to work 4 hours a week for over 15 years at ~30 weeks per year...nearing 2000 hours on that 'consumer grade' push mower is a LOT to ask. I think I got my $550 out of her. :)
Another reason to thoroughly clean the top and underside of the deck is to look for problems. When I removed my deck, flipped it over and pressure washed the underside, I found a crack circling around 2 bolts that held a pulley bracket on the topside. The crack was about 1/8" from being all the way around, which would have been catastrophic had it completely broke when mowing. So a little maintenance and cleaning can prevent expensive problems.
I'm from Georgia I watch you every chance I get, I like your honesty I bought that stuff to get water out of your gas ethanol shield thank you for that advice, be very careful with the pressure washer I worked using one for a few years, I borrowed it from my boss and just in a split second, I lost my grip but I regained it but caught the corner of my glasses, look like somebody shot me over my right eyebrow blew my scalp out like a balloon, and came out over the left eyebrow, hate to be that specific but that's how dangerous they are, scared me when I seen it like to get away with you, tell your husband I hope he's doing well and I hope his surgery went well, that concrete is unforgiving God bless you and your husband very much thank you for the great videos😮
At the end of each mowing season, I pull the deck, totally clean it, and then the next day I spray the entire underside with PAM cooking spray! It’s cheap, clings to everything and doesn’t drip off!
I have this exact kit and it comes in handy for all kinds of jobs. Under mower decks, sure. Cleaning out your gutters, why not? Virtually, anything that requires a longer wand and a curved neck.
I have a 10 year old Cub Cadet, and after everytime I get done cutting my grass, I blow it off with my blower. Then I use my garden hose and spray it off eveywhere including under the deck. Then I use the blower again to blow the water off. The only major repair was replacing the spindles one time.
Thanks for the mower deck hygiene tips. As you pointed out, it's important to keep your deck clean to avoid trouble down the road. It's a good thing to blow or vacuum your deck regularly. Poor deck maintenance may lead to having to brace your deck so it stays rigid. So gentlemen take care of your deck for years of service at a moments notice. Yours truly ED
I take the deck off at the end of the season, so that I can put my snow blower attachment on. That make it easier to flip over and clean. Your videos are so so good! Thanks for taking the time to make them.
The roads in the winter where I live are often salted/brined. So I purchased an attachment for my pressure washer that consists of 4 high pressure jets on a bar with rollers. I use it to clean the salt off the underside of my cars. Works like a charm. I also use it to clean the undercarriage of my riding mower. No need to worry about runaway high pressure wands and it very quickly cleans the entire undercarriage. Anyway, just an option to the 120° attachment...especially for those who live in colder climates where salt and brine create havoc under your cars.
@MrLuigi-oi7gm Can you post a link to where you purchased the attachment you described? Sounds like a perfect solution for several problems I need to resolve!!
Although this is not a car channel would be nice to just include a little bit on the progress of the Cougar. Love the first gen Cougars. Would love to have a Dan Gurney or XR7 with a 427. Does such a thing exist?
When you add the 90 on the end of your wond it puts a lot of side load on the pipe. This summer I was using my Honda 3000psi washer cleaning the peak of my house and after I had the wond pointed at the peak I pulled the trigger and the next thing I remember I was lying on the ground with my eye hurting ( had safety glasses on) . The wond was made of stainless with no seam, it bent completely backwards and started cutting my fore head through my eye, cheek, nose, and upper lip . All healed now, but lost some sight of the eye. Just glad I was not using my 5000 psi washer,I used the failed wond for the previous 10 years and it was discarded after accident I believe it failed due to fatigue. Purchased new 18 foot wand and thought I would read the directions, they stated do not wear safety glasses ( hah) only goggles or face shield. Hope this will save an eye.
That's a far more graphic and personal account of how dangerous these tools can be than I could ever come up with. These tools are great but they aren't toys. Sounds like wearing a full face bike helmet is the way to go when using these. Close the visor of course.
The wand extensions look good, but for less money I got a swiveling nozzle that goes on the wand. It can spray in any direction and is more compact to fit in more places. I leave it on always and find it very useful.
AgriGuard is designed to be used to paint fertilizer equipment. It bonds to firmly atrached rust snd cures grom moisture in the air. I used it on an old mower deck that was well rusted and even mowing juicy weeds does not acfect it. Battery acid does not affect it. It dries to a high gloss slick finish and very hard and tough. Use two coats, but apply the second coat about four hours after the first. The second voat will not dtick to the first if you wait too long.
I clean the deck on my Toro Zero turn, with my homemade cleaner. I used a three foot section of pcv pipe, added two elbows at opposite direction for stabilizing. Added a hose attachment, and drilled 1/8 holes the length of the pipe. Just slide it under the deck, turn on the water, lower the deck and turn it on. The multiple spray points clean the deck very well.
I wish I had seen this years ago, my stamped zero tun deck is held together with JB Weld putty and thin aluminum sheeting. The Carolina sandy soil has ripped holes in it. But I will use this on my new zero turn when JB will no longer keep it together. Thanks for all you teach us.
You are a blessing ! Much info with truth and by years of experience. Sure wish I had a lady like you not many around !!! Thank you for all your helpful hints and great info !!!!
I blow mine off after every mow so that my garage doesn't stink with rotting grass. Then, take the deck off for storage each winter when the snow blade goes on. While it's off, I use a plastic scraper to scrape the grass off. Also, I lube the grease fittings on the spindles and sharpen the blades before the deck goes back on. I want to try the Fluid Film, I've heard good things about that.
Years ago I had a patio cover installed over my patio and the cover has a gutter included with it. It has always been a hassle to get up on a ladder to manually clean out that gutter until I found an attachment for my Pressure washer that has the extensions and angle wand to help that clean from the GROUND. Been using it for years now to clean the underneath of the riding mower in the same way. A very handy addition to the DIY arsenal of Gadgets !!!
I bought a kit like that, that is made to clean your gutter. I will have to try it on the mower. ALSO...... Yes, that elbow does force the wand back violently if you are not ready for it.
Thank you for this video! While watching this video I stopped it and went out to the garage and put my cell phone up under my mower deck and recorded a video. Well I assumed that the wash port was keeping it clean under there but not the case and I use the port after every mowing. Amazon take my money again!
My 30 year old Honda lawnmower has never even had an oil change until this year! (My bad)For many years it was forgotten outside in the snow!! It still starts and runs like a gem!! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Wise advice indeed! Pressure wash - then add a blow dry. Just like a decent hair salon! Plant material is full of proteins and salts that turbocharge rust. Our 2 year old helpfully put my key ring in a compost bin. I found it a year later in the garden and the corrosion was astounding. Any steel key was basically gone.
😊 I thought of this 6 months ago too. I always blow the debris off after mowing. I was frustrated about all the gunk under the deck after each mow, along with the gunk left by the previous owner. In my hunt, I discovered the same kit as you have. Easy to clean the under surface of the deck. It's been an ongoing learning experience moving from the desert to the Pacific Northwest. Love your channel.
cleaning the deck often is a great idea. About twenty years ago I made my own 45 degree elbow for about $15.00 and it has served me well. I like my setup because I can slide it under the deck completely and the "kickback" is held in check by the driveway.
It sounds crazy, but I coated the entire underside of my deck with construction adhesive. Got the idea from my truck's bedliner. Used four tubes so it's about a quarter-inch thick everywhere. I noticed at the end of the first season there are high-wear areas that were getting bare, so I recoated those with Bondo. (easy to use and sold at the hardware store.) After several seasons this appears to be the cure for preventing rust. My Husky is an '05 and has zero rust. Car ramps to elevate for washing work well.
I love your videos I ended up buying a side lift jack for my garden tractor ..don’t have to get on my back it’s awesome able clean deck really good twice a year also changing blades is easy ..I used a grinder brushed em up gave em a new edge without removing …with two bad shoulders and back this makes working on mower allot more comfortable..I actually found myself enjoying it
I just replaced all three spindles on my zero-turn mower this year because of lack of maintenance. Listen to her folks! It will save you money. Will be purchasing a kit. Thank you.

The underside of my deck was SO BAD! I will lovingly take care of it with this but my grass generally grows all year long. I plant rye grass for pets to eat during cold season. All my dogs and cats have always loved grass munching. Thank you! Your posts are always appreciated! Oh, and post a paypal or kofi link, please. I can send gratitude when I have money to spare.

What a great idea! I've got some of those attachments in the kit I got for gutter cleaning so I'll have to see if they fit my pressure wand and clean my ring mower. I already lost one mower to deck rot.
@@mike.4277 Poulens. MTD. Briggs 16 hp. 38”. 2003. I change belts and blades every 3 seasons. I change oil 2x per season. I put in a fuel filter and fuel shutoff valve as soon as I got it, in 2003. My battery stays on a battery maintainer set up in my shed. My battery is 12 years old! And still holds a great charge!
This is something very useful around farming equipement. A lot of money invested in those attachments that always seem to plug up somewhere. Blowing out and pressure washing these machines heading into wintertime hibernation would be a good idea.
Literally just bought a new electric pressure washer (avoids the “must be firing” challenge of gas engines). Also just ordered this exact ens eon one kit on Amazon today. How awesome!
get it before CPSC bans it. learned physics years ago when i put a 90 degree ell on a 5 foot 3500 psi wand!!!! had big radiators plug on frac units. it was 12 hr minimum to remove clean and reinstall. thats without trans coolers and hydraulic cooler cleaning. my trick cut it to about 3 hrs. interestingly i had a customer come in in november to get his yearly service. his deck underneath was spoitless. when i asked him how he did it he told me he mulches his leaves beforethe shuts down for winter. i tried it it works!
those are really cool, I may have to get that kit. I've got a 20+ year old cub 3204 that I stripped off all the underside and coated it with air cure cerakote, it has stood up way better than paint ever did. on year 3 now
I use WD-40 to spray the underside of the cleaned deck. I purchase it in one gallon cans and use a hand held sprayer to apply it. It also works well applied to a snow blowers auger and chute. It really helps when dealing with heavy wet snow, especially on a single stage blower. You'll have to put your own vent in the one gallon can. Hope this helps.
Nice. I use my JD X580 year round but at the end of lawn season I dismount the deck and pressure wash it and the rest of the tractor, avoiding the controller/display unit (pricey). Then I let it dry, lube the contact points, and mount my basic hardware for the snow blade. I don’t mount the blade until late December. This way I can use it to pull my chipper - shredder around the property for the annual cut back of the brush.
Tennis ball. Yes you can stand on the wand. For start procedure. And even use it without carpal tunnel effects with a tennis ball. Love the content.❤🧡💛💚💙💜🖤 Save you some time money and frustration. You can remove it with your thumb ! Ya gotta like that .
I have been using a, I think it is a Hyde brand? Not sure, but it has a control on the handle that allows you to swivel the spray head at an angle in either direction. It is so handy! I have had this for years and it works great! Don't have to change the spray head for the angled end because I can set to straight or angled using the simple handle mounted control. If you can find one, try it. You will probably like it as much as I do.
At the end of the first mowing season on my new mower, to prep for storage I removed the deck, cleaned AND degreased the top and underside. I then coated the whole thing with 2 layers of pickup bed liner spray. The good stuff. That was 22 years ago. Still no rust even after ridding hard and putting away wet. Rebuilt the engine about 9 years ago. Gone through 4 sets of Spindles. 2 acres. Looks funny with a black deck but who cares. I'm not prejudiced.
I've had that kit for a couple years now. Each time I use it, I take the extension wand apart and put it away. It didn't take long for the o-rings to wear out and need replacing. Other than that, I love it.
Hey that’s my kind of tool. I’ve hose down my mowers after each use. They are older mowers that I keep maintained. I do use power washer on any equipment in for repairs because hate working on a gummed up machine especially riders zero turns. Excellent product review.
Thanks for the tips. I find the best tool is a either a blower or a compressed air to blow all of the dust and dirt off the mower deck and do not forget to blow out the radiator as lots of stuff grass clipping and dust builds up in the slits. Additionally, I found that pressure washers are too hard on the mowers stickers
Interesting widget. I just finished doing the quarterly test run of our portable genie, changed the oil and checked battery with old school load tester so it is ready for winter. As we have only run it a few hours since new I have not changed the plug but have a spare on hand just in case. No fancy schmancy lawn mower for us, just a walk behind push mower. Not yet time to put it away here in NH. Even if the grass isn't growing I use it to mulch leaves so most of them blow down the hill instead of raking.

That one goooood tip. Thanks. Miss
Cool content Bre. I'll have to invest in that wand attachment. Stay safe.
Thanks, I have those pressure washer tools but haven't yet thought about using it for underneath the mower deck.👍
Hello there nice out fit for power washing enjoy your nice weather
get it before CPSC bans it. learned physics years ago when i put a 90 degree ell on a 5 foot 3500 psi wand!!!! had big radiators plug on frac units. it was 12 hr minimum to remove clean and reinstall. thats without trans coolers and hydraulic cooler cleaning. my trick cut it to about 3 hrs. interestingly i had a customer come in in november to get his yearly service. his deck underneath was spoitless. when i asked him how he did it he told me he mulches his leaves beforethe shuts down for winter. i tried it it works!
those are really cool, I may have to get that kit. I've got a 20+ year old cub 3204 that I stripped off all the underside and coated it with air cure cerakote, it has stood up way better than paint ever did. on year 3 now
That tip is great for cleaning out gutters too.
Love your vids straight to the point
Thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much!!!!!!!
Moonpie!!!!!
That's going to help me out much appreciated from the Ozarks
Very nice tools Bre ❤❤❤
Texhnically speaking, yer real smart and we all like ya a lot!
Excellent advise...
How long did the bed liner last on the underside of the Deck?
As long as the original paint is intact , bedliner is a fabulous idea.
How does the rough surface of the bed liner affect the discharge of grass clippings? I use non-stick paint which leaves a smooth surface.

"Still no rust even after ridding hard and putting away wet."
IMHO he means both above and below deck...
another good video keep em coming.
I bought a gutter cleaning attachment for my pressure washer and it has several different angled tips been cleaning my deck like this for years ✌️🇺🇸🇺🇸
I've had that kit for a couple years now. Each time I use it, I take the extension wand apart and put it away. It didn't take long for the o-rings to wear out and need replacing. Other than that, I love it.
You're a champ, and thanks for the tip(s)!
I've used that same pressure washer attachment. It's a wild ride indeed! Lol. You have to pay attention!
Great job. Thank you 😊
Great addition for the power washer. That 120° tip would be great for cleaning gutters too
and busting yourself, windows, gutters, siding, vehicles, etc. when it gets away from you or knocks you off the ladder.
@@throttlebottle5906use a lower pressure tip. No problem
They also make undercarriage attachments for washing under your car...or mower. Clean your deck, wait for it to dry then spray with Fluid Film.
Hey Thanks for great work, also love your VW
