  • Today we are at the intersection of Charles and Baltimore Streets right in the heart of downtown. And what better place than city center for the headquarters building of the B&O Railroad, America’s first railroad? Join us to discover the history behind this beautiful Beaux-Arts building. We’ll point out one particular sculpture that will now make you stop every time you pass by it. Thanks for watching and see you next week with another video!
This is our series called "Five Minute Histories." Every week, we’ll record a short video about a different historic place in Baltimore and post it on our Facebook page and TH-cam channel.

Imagine the commercial hustle and bustle of Baltimore in its heyday. The din and clatter of a million residents night and day!

A building in my favorite city with some family history! My Great Grandfather and Grandfather both worked for the B&O there and in Mt. Clare!

Well,I'll be doggone! That Sculpture does look like a young William Jefferson "Bill" Clinton! I wonder if he's ever noticed that?! Wow! Another fascinating video! 😊👏

Loved this one! One of my great uncles was Frank Deets. He was an executive with the B&O for quite a long time. He was a vice-president, but I don't know his full title. When you mentioned it's now a hotel, I immediately started making plans to visit. Spending a few days in the building he worked in would be kinda cool.

Great video! One quibble: a railroad TERMINAL is at the end of track. A "STATION" is a stop along the track, which goes in more than one direction from the station! Thus in New York, there is Pennsylvania STATION and Grand Central TERMINAL!

i measured the building back in 2007 or 2008 for redevelopment. i found it quite interesting that part of the front sections of the building were built upon previous foundation walls of buildings that had burned in the great baltimore fire. evident are structural walls that dont align with construction above, along with brick arches doing no work for the building above.

Thanks for another interesting & informative video! Some suggestions for future videos: the Thomas Viaduct, the Mt. Royal Station, & Penn. Station.
