I saw her in person at a Chinese restaurant in Cincinnati, Ohio many many years ago. She had to be much older but she was stunning. Years later i saw Linda Carter and was amazed that both ladies were far more beautiful in person. The screen did not do either any justice.
I had the same experience with Elizabeth Montgomery years ago at the height of her "Bewitched" fame. I was at the Rose Parade when she was a commentator that year. Some of us followed her back to her trailer after she finished. She came out to sign autographs. She borrowed my pen to sign them, so I was able to stand right next to her while she was signing them, and let me tell you! That woman was drop-dead beautiful in person, even more so in person than on television!

It was kept secret though. Many women in those times had abortions to protect themselves against the stigma of single motherhood unfortunately. Movie studios were known to push their actresses to get an abortion in order to keep their contracts. Young herself was almost aborted by her own mother because they were so poor. Her mothers doctor had agreed to do it.

This is indeed a heartwarming story. I was meant to be an abortion, and from foster care I was raised by family. My mother did nothing. I commend Loretta Young for having found a way to keep, and nurture her daughter. Wow.
Later, Loretta Young helped other young unwed mothers and wrote about it in a 1966 Readers Digest article called "Unforgettable Sister Winifred." Sister Winifred was a nursing nun who ran a home for unwed mothers who were mostly aged 11 to 15.
I used to watch her show as a little girl and loved her. She was so beautiful and classy. I continued to watch her movies. I remembered when she died. It sadden me greatly. Miss this fabulous lady.

I seen an interview with the daughter and her speaking about about her famous parents (now deceased) she was 73 yrs old and she remarked that when he visited her mums house, that he made a fuss over her plus he'd paid alot of interests in her, for instance listening to her and tell her stories. Instinctively she'd always knew that he was her father ...then she'd think she was actually crazy about thinking it. But, oh lord,she was Clark Gables image only female. I had a sister-in-law who was her double. She lived and worked in CA but I met her at a family home in Utah whose back yard joined their family's back yard. I was never a "Groupie" as they are known today. But like Loretta, you couldn't mistake their beauty and I was a believer that "Beauty is as Beauty does". Family members were also beautiful people; inside and out. She lived in CA as I also once did when married to their brother who was in the service . Even he was as gifted and sang in a quartet and was known to hit High C with his voice. L O L I saw him act in plays put on with players from USO members. You can't argue with good genes and talent.
It's easy to criticize based on today's standards - but things were very different when Loretta Young became pregnant. She was absolutely correct to keep it hidden then. Things were very hard for women, back in the 'good old days'.
I know some single moms keep their babies today which is good but things have not changed all that much. Closed adoption records were based on the birth mother privacy lie and Christians continue to use that to keep the records closed and steal our birth certificates from us. Catholics and Mormons still demand that single moms sign their babies over to adoption agencies who then sell their babies for up to 50k to a sterile couple. The lies in adoption today are outrageous, like some adoption agencies tell single pregnant young women that God let you get pregnant so you could give your baby to a childless couple. No one still wants to listen to we adoptees about how much we hate adoption and the system and want the records open as well. Nor do adopters and agencies want the public to know that family preservation is the best thing for children and how much adoption hurts us in so many ways. Same prejudice/greed, different century.
I feel so bad for her daughter. My wife was adopted and knew at an early are about her birth mother. Finding out the truth about her birth father was quite an ordeal. The truth always has a way of coming out. Stay safe folks.

This biography didn't mention that she adopted two little girls from the orphanage at the same time. Kept the two for some short time and returning one of them later. The one she kept was her real daughter.
I was born out of wedlock in 1965 during the height of the civil rights movement, in the South. My mother was made to apologize in front of her Church for getting pregnant. She never got over the shame and guilt. Although she loved & cared for me, she married a predator just to give me a name. Eventually her mental health declined and she became a toxic & manipulative person. She never told me who my biological father was & I had to hire a private investigator to locate him when I was 30yrs old, but he was already deceased. All and all, what women had to go through back then was ridiculous. But unfortunately women like my mother & Loretta Young will never understand the toll it took on their daughters, children and grandchildren.
She was very smart and beautiful ❤️ to have riemideyed such a hard ball ,. Thrown at her at that time in her life by a bully. She planned a life including her baby's future with honor and class. 💕 Love her more.
Her mother was a strong single mother too under different circumstances with all those kiddos and no husband. She had good genes, common sense and a strong upbringing. She needed her career to provide for her first born and qualify for adopting her child. She was blessed, beautiful and brilliant.

Judy was not a happy person. She was bitter about being lied to and never knowing her biological father. She only met him once as a teenager and at that time she didn't know he was actually her father (neither Young nor Gable had the decency to tell her). She finally cottoned to all the rumors and confronted her mother who then admitted it. By that time Gable was dead.

People forget that it’s not just about the pregnancy back then, it was the hell they rained down upon the children that was even worse. Children born out of wedlock wore a scarlet letter all their lives back in those days. Now you just get cancelled. I adore Loretta even more now. She was breathtaking and real all at once.
We still do get rained down upon. That's what closed adoption records are. We also are constantly emotionally abused whenever we say how much we hate adoption and the system and push for open records and family preservation -IE: keeping your baby. Adoption agencies and adopters constantly harass us online and off and push lie after lie after lie.
I think Loretta did the best she could under a very bad set of circumstances. Had she revealed her pregnancy to the 1930's general public, it would have totally wrecked her career. And remember, she did make a point to come back for her daughter after only a short period of time (19 months). I harbor no ill will towards Loretta for the way she handled it.
Hind sight is always 20:20. Whatever Loretta Young did or thought she had to do to maintain her child's life and her career obviously worked out to everyone's benefit. I have always loved Loretta Young, and after I was grown and in my twenties had several people tell me how much I looked like her. To find out what a strong woman she was really seals my love for her. I never had anything as life altering happen as Loretta, but I have had my share of a difficult life. With a divorce, relocation, and raising two kids on my own for a short time. Then I found a perfect mate, the love of my life, and he was my support and cheerleader! He passed away 4 years ago and I miss him so very much! Loretta Young was a beautiful, gracious lady who was all that in spite of the turmoil going on in secret. She is always going to be my favorite older actress! God bless and rest for the next adventure, Loretta!
I loved Loretta Young in the movie the bishops wife with Cary Grant she did a wonderful job in that movie. I’ve seen many movies with Loretta Young now and her acting ability is fantastic but the personality that comes through Is even more charming. I think she did the only thing she could under all the circumstances with her daughter. She did what was right for herself and what was right for her daughter.
My Mother named my youngest sister 'Loretta' because she considered Loretta Young not only beautiful and talented, but one (if not THE) classiest women in the film industry. NOTHING she ever did made my Mother think otherwise...my Mother knew class when she saw it. My Mom's Credo: Money has nothing to do with class. Loretta Young did what she had to do in those days to keep her daughter close until she could openly have her full time, a lot of women suffered that kind of abuse especially in the movie industry. its a sad part of our history but where this lovely woman was concerned she was an amazing actress and a great lady. She was always one of my favorites.
We must remember that back in those times, an unwed mother, no matter who they were, was considered a pariah. The fact that she was an active Catholic also figured into her decision. She did what she thought was best for the times. When she knew that it wasn’t going to hurt anyone, she allowed the information to be released. I always thought she was a classy lady and this confirms it. She could have made so much trouble for her studio and Clark Gable if she wanted but, she chose not to. That took a lot of gumption for her to have her child. I’ve not seen where Clark Gable was told but I’m assuming not so we don’t know his feelings on the matter. She still remains one of my favorite leading ladies and will continue to be. My favorite movie of hers is Come to the Stable. If you haven’t seen it, it’s marvelous.

Amazing what a good actress she was even as a teenager. IMO, Loretta Young looked her prettiest in the early 1930s. Unfortunately, those depression era films are rarely shown. When she came out of retirement near the end of her life, she made an incredibly beautiful holiday film for TV called "Christmas Eve." She was much older but her beauty was still in tact.

Putting things in prospective, she had no alternative in dealing with a pregnancy which would have destroyed her career. We are talking 1935 here and society was nowhere near as permissive as today. I applaud her for not having an abortion and the strength of her faith and her morality. I’d heard that when Judith was young she was visited by Clark Gable on at least two occasions, obviously with Loretta’s permission. Even at the time of his untimely death in 1960 society still would never have accepted the disclosure so Loretta made the best of a terrible situation. I remember watching a TV performance in her later years when she briefly came out of retirement and her talents were as obvious then as they were in her earliest films. I had a sister-in-law who was her double. She lived and worked in CA but I met her at a family home in Utah whose back yard joined their family's back yard. I was never a "Groupie" as they are known today. But like Loretta, you couldn't mistake their beauty and I was a believer that "Beauty is as Beauty does". Family members were also beautiful people; inside and out. She lived in CA as I also once did when married to their brother who was in the service . Even he was as gifted and sang in a quartet and was known to hit High C with his voice. L O L I saw him act in plays put on with players from USO members. You can't argue with good genes and talent.

It's easy to criticize based on today's standards - but things were very different when Loretta Young became pregnant. She was absolutely correct to keep it hidden then. Things were very hard for women, back in the 'good old days'.
I know some single moms keep their babies today which is good but things have not changed all that much. Closed adoption records were based on the birth mother privacy lie and Christians continue to use that to keep the records closed and steal our birth certificates from us. Catholics and Mormons still demand that single moms sign their babies over to adoption agencies who then sell their babies for up to 50k to a sterile couple. The lies in adoption today are outrageous, like some adoption agencies tell single pregnant young women that God let you get pregnant so you could give your baby to a childless couple. No one still wants to listen to we adoptees about how much we hate adoption and the system and want the records open as well. Nor do adopters and agencies want the public to know that family preservation is the best thing for children and how much adoption hurts us in so many ways. Same prejudice/greed, different century.

I was born out of wedlock in 1965 during the height of the civil rights movement, in the South. My mother was made to apologize in front of her Church for getting pregnant. She never got over the shame and guilt. Although she loved & cared for me, she married a predator just to give me a name. Eventually her mental health declined and she became a toxic & manipulative person. She never told me who my biological father was & I had to hire a private investigator to locate him when I was 30yrs old, but he was already deceased. All and all, what women had to go through back then was ridiculous. But unfortunately women like my mother & Loretta Young will never understand the toll it took on their daughters, children and grandchildren.
I watched her TV show when I was a little girl. I thought she was one of the most beautiful women back then.
She was very smart and beautiful ❤️ to have riemideyed such a hard ball ,. Thrown at her at that time in her life by a bully. She planned a life including her baby's future with honor and class. 💕 Love her more.
Her mother was a strong single mother too under different circumstances with all those kiddos and no husband. She had good genes, common sense and a strong upbringing. She needed her career to provide for her first born and qualify for adopting her child. She was blessed, beautiful and brilliant.

Judy was not a happy person. She was bitter about being lied to and never knowing her biological father. She only met him once as a teenager and at that time she didn't know he was actually her father (neither Young nor Gable had the decency to tell her). She finally cottoned to all the rumors and confronted her mother who then admitted it. By that time Gable was dead.
During the years that she was pregnant, things were much more strict than now. She did what she had to to protect herself and her child.

I think Loretta did the best she could under a very bad set of circumstances. Had she revealed her pregnancy to the 1930's general public, it would have totally wrecked her career. And remember, she did make a point to come back for her daughter after only a short period of time (19 months). I harbor no ill will towards Loretta for the way she handled it.

To find out what a strong woman she was really seals my love for her. I never had anything as life altering happen as Loretta, but I have had my share of a difficult life. With a divorce, relocation, and raising two kids on my own for a short time. Then I found a perfect mate, the love of my life, and he was my support and cheerleader! He passed away 4 years ago and I miss him so very much! Loretta Young was a beautiful, gracious lady who was all that in spite of the turmoil going on in secret. We must remember that back in those times, an unwed mother, no matter who they were, was considered a pariah. The fact that she was an active Catholic also figured into her decision. She did what she thought was best for the times. When she knew that it wasn’t going to hurt anyone, she allowed the information to be released. I always thought she was a classy lady and this confirms it. She could have made so much trouble for her studio and Clark Gable if she wanted but, she chose not to. That took a lot of gumption for her to have her child. I’ve not seen where Clark Gable was told but I’m assuming not so we don’t know his feelings on the matter. She still remains one of my favorite leading ladies and will continue to be. My favorite movie of hers is Come to the Stable. If you haven’t seen it, it’s marvelous.

You included some from the early 1930s, but if people today saw Loretta Young in many of her films made between 1931 and 1935, they would be mesmerized by her natural beauty. She was absolutely gorgeous in the early 1930s. Just look at her in Midnight Mary, Employees Entrance, Man's Castle, Big Business Girl, Born To Be Bad, They Call It Sin, I Like Your Nerve, Platinum Blonde, She Had To Say Yes, Taxi, and many other films she made when she was not yet 21. Amazing what a good actress she was even as a teenager. IMO, Loretta Young looked her prettiest in the early 1930s. Unfortunately, those depression era films are rarely shown. When she came out of retirement near the end of her life, she made an incredibly beautiful holiday film for TV called "Christmas Eve." She was much older but her beauty was still in tact.

Putting things in prospective, she had no alternative in dealing with a pregnancy which would have destroyed her career. We are talking 1935 here and society was nowhere near as permissive as today. I applaud her for not having an abortion and the strength of her faith and her morality. I’d heard that when Judith was young she was visited by Clark Gable on at least two occasions, obviously with Loretta’s permission. Even at the time of his untimely death in 1960 society still would never have accepted the disclosure so Loretta made the best of a terrible situation. I remember watching a TV performance in her later years when she briefly came out of retirement and her talents were as obvious then as they were in her earliest films. She was certainly a beautiful woman and though a Cad, I can understand Clark Gable’s putting the move on her. I’m sure she was not his only starlet conquest in Hollywood.
She did what she felt best for her and her baby, glad that later they were reunited.

Loretta Young was luminous. I absolutely loved her.
I believe the choices she made for herself and for her daughter, she truly felt was the right thing to at that time.
My late mother loved The Loretta Young show and watched it every week. That meant my dad and I watched it very often as well! :0)
She did what she felt was best and she was right during that time the media and Hollywood and the public would have crucified her and the child if the
story came out. She was a terrific actress & quite the lady.
She had a wonderful TV show every week. I always wondered why they never repeat them on TV like they do with old shows like I Love Lucy, The Brady Bunch, etc.

My handsome brother loved Loretta Young. When his health started to decline and he knew he would be dying soon, he had a dream. Loretta Young appeared to him and told him not to be afraid because where he is going, he will like it there.
