Hattie McDaniels was allowed to attend because Gable was so pissed that they were not going to let her attend, that he threatend to no attend either. They weren't having that. Whatever Gable wanted-Gable got! I always thought that was awesome how he stood up for her!❤

I think you have your stories mixed up.
On the set during filming there were signs on the bathrooms that prohibited the black actors from using the same bathrooms as the white actors - white men, colored men, white women, colored women. The black actors were upset by this, as they should’ve been. One of the young black male actors told Clark Gable how the black actors felt about being segregated in the bathroom. Gable was supportive of blacks having equal rights. He went to someone and demanded that the race signs be removed from the bathroom doors. He told them that if the signs were not removed, then they would have to find themselves another Rhett Butler. The next day the signs were gone.
Hattie McDaniel and all of the other black actors were not allowed to attend the premiere of the movie which happened in Atlanta. Clark Gable, who was good friends, with Hattie McDaniel, decided that if the black actors were not able to attend the premiere, then he wouldn’t go either. He didn’t have enough power to go against the Jim Crow laws that existed in the southern states so he couldn’t pressure anyone into allowing the black actors to attend. Hattie McDaniel talked him into going to the premiere anyway so he went.
Hattie McDaniel had been nominated for an Oscar so they did allow her to attend the ceremony, but they seated her at a table by herself away from all the other tables and away from the others who attended. None of the other black actors were allowed to attend the Oscar ceremony.
Clark Gable didn’t want to play the part of Rhett Butler because he said that so many people had read the book and they had images in their minds of who Rhett Butler was, how he behaved, and what he looked like. Clark Gable said that he was concerned that he might not play the part in a way that would meet the expectations of the people who had already formed a mental image of Rhett Butler.
I agree that there was a large discrepancy in the actors’ pay between what men earned and what women earned and what black actors earned. However, I believe that part of the reason why Clark Gable was paid such a high salary was because they knew that he was reluctant to play Rhett Butler, but they wanted him to play the part so badly that they were willing to pay him a lot of money in order to get him to agree to play the part. That’s just speculation on my part though.

There was a long, long list of actresses up for the part of Scarlett O'Hara.
Bette Davis was one actress on that list. If you want to see how Bette Davis would have done the part of Scarlett, look at the movie "Jezebel" (1938), which came out a year before "Gone With the Wind". Bette Davis played the part of Julie Marsden, a character very similar to Scarlett O'Hara.

@@randallulrich Leslie Howard's more mature, aloof, conservative demeanor, pallor relative to his outdoorsmen peers, and Southern rural slowed British accent aptly passed for the character's likely Midatlantic accent perhaps bred and reinforced by his attendance at a more northerly East Coast university and prep schools; it realistically reflected his more solitary studious nature, dwelling dreamily in a world of knightly ideals, spiritually and emotionally at odds with the tumultuous practical exigencies of material survival in the war and its aftermath.

Fascinating behind the scenes! I have a minor part in "Gone with the Wind's" history - I was the first person in the United States to show this film outside a theater! I was in graduate school in 1973, when "Gone with the Wind" was officially released for public non-theatrical showings. The student social vice president at the college I went to heard about it and made the first reservation for the film rental nearly two years in advance! I was his technical assistant - I showed all the films on campus. By the time we showed "Gone with the Wind" we had a brand new pair of high-powered arc-light movie projectors, and when we actually got the film the print was made directly from the original negatives of the original film, and had never been shown. The movie was brilliant with no scratches, and the audience was surprised by how great it looked. I was delighted with how great the whole program was, and it has been my top experience of any film I have ever seen.

Something about to the title has always attracted me more than the movie itself. So much so, I bought an old, old 1938 copy of the book a year back, fairly cheap too. I've heard it's an epic masterpiece, and since I'm also a movie buff, this is one I oughta see at least once, but when, idk... Till I read a book on generations in history, it referenced Gone With the Wind as an example of the generational archetypes during history's "turning," then that book called out to me again. Well, I'm so glad to hear Mitchell loved seeing her own written work adapted to her liking (which is a risky gamble to lend someone else do). So for plans in 2024, I definitely want to read the American classic novel and watch the film. Too many signs have been pointing to it lately, and it's about time to be done now.

It is about a woman's struggle to regain her financial standing and what she was willing to do to get it back. She was spoiled and selfish and very cunning. The things she did would make anyone cringe, but she felt she had to do those things. It was about love, and greed. At the end though she realized the error of her ways but unlike the happy ending we were used to seeing, she lost. The movie was about her trials, tribulations and the lesson she learned. The competition for the part of MAMMY was damned near as fierce as it was for Scarlett. It was not lost on anyone that the black actress who would land the role would be featured in a major Hollywood film production. Supposedly screen icon Mae West auditioned her black housekeeper. Eventually, Hattie McDaniel would get the role due to sensational stage work and her close friendship with Clark Gable who encouraged Selznick to hire her. The rest is history. She would win an Oscar for her performance. Well deserved. We love Hattie McDaniel.

Not bad for Laurence Olivier's "girlfriend" to win two Academy Awards for best actress during her career, was it? Interesting fact, in David Selznick's biography he mentioned how VL winning an Academy Award for Scarlett and CG not winning an Oscar for Rhett affected his and Gable's relationship negatively for a period of time. Gable thought that Selznick Productions hadn't gone to bat for him the way they did for Vivien Leigh. Sounds like the diva behavior wasn't by Ms. Leigh.

I totally agree with the posts here about Hattie McDaniel--her performance was priceless. My favorite line of hers in GWTW: When Scarlett wanted Mammie to make her a new dress with her mother's portieres (draperies), Mammie replied, " Not with Miss Ellen's portieres, not while there's breath left in my body."
Here's a few facts that I remember from watching "THE MAKING OF A LEGEND" GWTW documentary: George Reeves, the very first "Superman" actor, played one of the Tarleton twins in the opening scene of GWTW. Clark Gable got director George Cukor fired--because he wanted Victor Fleming to be director (Gable's buddy whom he chased women with). Olivia de Havilland was heartbroken that she didn't win the Oscar for best supporting actress (Hattie McDaniel won). Leslie Howard who portrayed the honorable Ashley Wilkes (who wouldn't carry on an affair with Scarlet), was a serial womanizer in real life.
Producer David O. Selznick was willing to pay Clark Gable a hefty fee only because the public demanded Gable for the role of Rhett Butler. The whole cast cried (off camera) during the filming of Melanie Wilkes' death scene. None of the black cast were invited to attend the Atlanta premiere, however, many in attendance (including GWTW author Margaret Mitchell and producer Selznick) cried during the presentation.
Margaret Mitchell, who never wrote another book, was hit by a car and died--ten years after the movie's premiere.
FACTS VERSE did a phenomenal presentation here about the movie of all movies--GONE WITH THE WIND.

It wasn’t so much that Gable objected to Cukor’s being gay; it was because he was considered a ‘woman’s director’. Since he was spending extra time with Leigh & Olivia deHavilland, Gable felt his character was being diminished. Since he was the biggest star involved, his complaint was taken seriously. That was also one of the reasons why he was so highly paid; the other was his divorce.
