A few months on a plant based diet is not enough time to see the full damage it can do. I believe as humans we are omnivores and opportunistic eaters but nothing is as energy, and nutrient packed as meats and fats. Considering a huge number of us live in locations that experience cold winters, the notion that we ever subsisted on mainly plants is just illogical. Animals exist through those winter months and their meat and fats can be dried and stored to carry us through. Yes, plants can be dried as well but the amounts needed to reach the caloric and fat requirements that might equal meats is not practical. I'm glad you share all sides...and in that spirit; please invite Dr. Shawn Baker to your channel.
Being Vegan caused me digestive problems, autoimmune disease and all the nickel from it....I have been diagnosed with SNAS Systematic Nickel Allergy Syndrome. Vegans have their heart in the right place, but at the cost of health. Phytochemicals are damaging.
How many ways are there to eat an omnivore's diet? There are countless ways. You can't label your health issues on a vegan diet. And to say plants are harmful? People that eat plant based are healthier. The more animal secretions you eat; dairy?? Why do you think the US is in a literal health epidemic of diabetes? It's not the freaking spinach.
I changed my diet from eating only roadkill that had been marinated in oily puddles, for a few days, and half eaten by wild animals and maggots, and i now only eat organic home grown vegetables and all my health issues disappeared. Meat bad vegetables good. I'm convinced.
Thank you Dr Been, very informative show. Much to ponder as I tend to eat more plant based foods than average but I find including a small amounts of animal protein very beneficial in providing overall well being and consistent energy levels.
Our bodies crave high caloric density foods so that we survive periods of food scarcity. This helps the species survive through history. But keeping you alive for the next month of food scarcity is a different goal than maximizing longevity in periods of continual food abundance (how we now live). So we are "mismatched" (in terms of what feels the best) for what will make us live longest. You may want to look up the mTor pathway - as it is a cause of shortened lifespan. Animal protein triggers this pathway, but only if you eat meat frequently. If you look at the longest lived people groups on the planet (the blue zones), most of them do eat some meat, but only on special occasions. You don't trigger the mTor pathway if you don't eat meat more than once a week. That being said, there is nothing in the meat per se that makes you live longer than if you avoid it, and your inflammatory markers will likely be even a bit better if you avoid meat entirely.

He makes a nice word salad... LOL... but I will agree that kicking out the processed foods is really the biggest win anybody can do. For myself, I have already cut out processed foods, I do not follow the Standard American Diet (SAD) and I am doing keto/OMAD, and I don't even eat the replacement foods, I completely gave up the sweet treats mentality... I have once in a while, but few and very far between. So I have no such cravings for anything processed, sweets, breads, I only eat whole foods and I grow some veggies in my garden. I have listened to a lot of lectures with various viewpoints about various diets and have I come to a conclusion that (A) each person has to find their individual requirements and (B) needs change over time. For example, A plant-based diet is a good place to start but might not work long-term... or it might be the perfect diet for that individual. It's finding what works for you. I'm sure that Dr. Fuhrman knows about the plant forms of protein and fat aren't always optimal for the body, for example, plant Omega 3 in walnuts and flax seeds, ALA, has a low conversion in our bodies of ~7% to DHA and EPA unlike their animal counterparts that has it in those forms already. But even with that said, I do agree that there are benefits to eating plants for their healing and protective properties, essential minerals and vitamins like potassium and magnesium, etc. We can't live without them. What I think is important to acknowledge is that the evidence cited about plants and/or animal products is probably, most likely, in the context of a horrible SAD diet and as we know, there are confounders. Associations are weak evidence and not proof of causation, thus they cannot be cited as risk factors. I am still a learner of health and nutrition... I appreciate hearing alternative viewpoints, I do respect Dr. Fuhrman's expertise as I do others that have a different viewpoint. Open discussion is "healthy"

I was invited to teach because physicians and others saw the results my students have obtained in their health status. There are quite a few people who are angry because they are sick or not well and do not realize why. One can have a very unhealthy vegan diet--things like Twinkies" are vegan. But they are not whole foods--they are highly processed. If someone was eating "health foods packaged" such foods they will become sick and would probably be better on an omnivore diet as at least they would be eliminating highly processed proteins, HOWWEVER this does not negate a the long term benefits of a properly balanced whole foods plant based diet.

Unfortunately he also didn't address the lectin problem , lectin that are present in vegetables and seeds. Nope never vegan only or carnivore only! He is wrong for most of us but there are always exceptions of course. Just look at our digestive system it is setup to process meat and vegetables and what we each need is different. There is no one diet that fits all period. I did quit all highly/ultra processed foods and limit my added sugar to no more than 25 grams a day. I have just about eliminated seed oils now.
@@MaynardsSpaceship absurd. However, our physiology is the key. The way our bodies utilize the nutrition , in other words. You should do a bit of research. Besides , what about us doesn’t make us carnivore?
I think the body needs food, the quality , and goodness inside it. The variety of it. The microbiom needs the variety to keep it at the correct amounts. I was concerned omega3s benefits that are sea based was not given sufficient requirement.
Eat a diet that's "largely plant-based people can choose to eat a small amount of animal products or none" It's bordering on irresponsible having this message repeated. He tries to villainise industrial seed oils and then says we get our fats from nuts and seeds😂 these are not a good source of the type of fat that the human body predominantly needs, and no successful populations of human beings ever ate such a diet in the past. In the first few sentences, he sets up a completely outrageous comparison, between an ultra processed food diet and his. The most nutrient dense diet that you can eat is one based on unprocessed animal foods, compare his diet with a traditional animal-based diet and it shows the nonsense that he is spouting. Let's face it, the herbivorous animals that we eat have already processed all of the plant material, including the vital nutrients into their bodies. human beings are not herbivore, not even close, you only have to look at our digestive anatomy. I thought Dr Been was all about mechanisms. The predominant mechanisms of the human digestive system are hydrochloric acid and pepsin designed to breakdown meat, alongside bile acids produced from a high cholesterol diet to emulsify fats, saturated animal fats. Very, very disappointing.
So he contends that eating a milder toxin with more nutrients is better than eating poisonous, low nutrient processed foods. I agree. I take exception to stopping with a less poisonous diet. Why not go to a fully non-toxic and fully nutritional diet by eating carnivore or near carnivores?? There may have been a time when the plant world was living off a much richer soil and provided products much healthier to us. That time no longer is here.
Our ancestor’s brains began to grow when they abandoned an all plant diet. They didn’t have time to cognate, when they had to forage constantly just to avoid starving. Also it’s virtually impossible to get all the necessary amino acids from plants unless you consume legumes. Let’s just face facts: our digestive systems work better with some form of animal protein. The seventh day adventists figured this out decades ago. We keep rehashing this nonsense. I’ve never met a vibrantly healthy vegan in my entire life and I’m almost 70.

Since I figured this all out I have felt great for the past 30 years. At 76 I think I will stay with what has worked for me thus far.
Thank you 🙏
Being Vegan caused me digestive problems, autoimmune disease and all the nickel from it....I have been diagnosed with SNAS Systematic Nickel Allergy Syndrome.

Wrong - phytonutirents are not damaging.
We really need to be wary of processed foods including the modern processed plant based foods.
There's a wide spectrum of what "processed" means. Baby carrots are processed. But you are 100% correct about highly processed foods.
Great lecture once again . Appreciate information
I changed my diet from eating only roadkill that had been marinated in oily puddles, for a few days, and half eaten by wild animals and maggots, and i now only eat organic home grown vegetables and all my health issues disappeared.

Carnivore Diet is the way to go. ❤
Many vaccine injured I have noticed are vegan. :(
The neurological burdens alone could be why so many "healthy" people are suffering; because they may look healthy, but they are severely nutrient deficient.

False.
Carnivore has healed many.
Vegans are among the bedridden STILL, YEARS after the jab.
Correlation or not, it needs to be looked into with seriousness and without bias.
Carnivore is a hot topic because people attribute veganism with false virtuous ideology.
Veganism is NOT virtuous, and people neglect their bodies on the cross of a lie that they cannot uphold themselves to: to never kill another living thing.
We need the nutrition given to us by God, to be received with thanksgiving.
We need protein.
We need heme iron.
He need the many vitamins, nutrients and minerals animals provide us.
And people are literally dying and suffering because we lack nutritious food.
Our ground is void of all healthy minerals.
Our vegetables are plagued with pesticides that _don't wash off_ .
And it is literally killing us.
I don't say this is hatred.
I love Vegans, and Vegetarians.
But they don't see that their lifestyles are literally destroying their poor bodies. ❤️

Even when I was a kid ,I’m 54 now , chicken was a roast dinner on a Sunday , beef mince once a week ,the occasional bit of wild salmon as my uncle fished ,very very occasional wild venison , the rest was veg grown in the garden .
Nowadays it’s 3 times a day ,dairy , 39 day chicken , bacon ,pork etc etc
My friends & acquaintances same age are having heart attacks, bad health ,hip replacements from being overweight, infact I’m surrounded sick & fat meat eaters
Plant based Scam my arse 😂
I mean technically the meat/dairy industry is a LOT bigger than the plant based diet ones. Food for thought.
The actual clinical studies to support a plant based diet without any gimmicks far out weigh the benefits, especially for reversing the common diseases killing American and so many worldwide. If something works for you then do it, however, it does not mean that most will not benefit from a plant based , whole foods diet.
seriously - i have seen about 100 videos of people who tried the strict plant diet and it didn't help them with any of their troubles - they went to high fat / low carb and it worked
@@frommyhighhorse no it’s not big Agra and the growing of corn wheat rice and soy is much larger in subsidies than the beef industry or the dairy industry and it’s also being pushed now by the United Nations, the world economic forum, both trying to get you to stop relying on farmers and ranchers for meat and dairy get you to eat bugs for protein and pushing plant proteins because that’s very controllable and drops your testosterone and makes you a passive little sheep.
You'd have to be insane to think a human can thrive without meat and fat.
And yet they do and thrive...how bizarre!

What kind of vegan diet did you eat? You realize that you are an anecdote, not data. I am also an anecdote. I have been 7 years on a whole food plant-based diet and have completely reversed my angina after a heart attack. All my numbers are great and I feel 30 years younger.
@@carl13579 I am the same, and I was able to reverse chronic diseases for all of my family members, including reversing their needs for amputations, and multiple medications for cancer, heart disease, blood pressure and diabetes. So many people are fooled by marketing and eat processed vegan foods or other "health- store" powders and bars etc instead of whole foods plant based diet. I feel for these people who have been marketed to as they miss the core tenants of how to have a healthy and true wellness plant based diet. I have been teaching classes (for free) for over 40 years now at invitation of hospitals, physician clinics, American Diabetes Association, in community centers etc and can lists thousands of people who have increased their health and wellness.
Everyone is different..
Who told you this, and why did you believe them?
33 years on a nutritarian lifestyle and I feel amazing! Thank you Dr. Fuhrman!
If I understood correctly, the benefits of his diets were contrasted with SAD ( standard american diet ). The main benefits were based on renouncing seed oils and processed foods. The good doctor showed bias towards carnivore and ketogenic diets. Is sad he didn't recognised his diet is very similar to vegetarian ketogenic diet. Unfortunately he also didn't address the lectin problem , lectin that are present in vegetables and seeds.
Lastly the good doctor is a proponent of save the earth by having less humans ( he mention at least once that we are too many )... does this ring any bells?
eat for The Earth in Santa Cruz Beth Love, administrator and Dr Marie Jose Hummel work with community RX “salud en tu playu” and I’ve volunteer for biometrics to assist 70% of the Hispanic population have diabetes mellitus we have witnessed within one week of our education diet that there is a change in one biometric in one week and a change in several biometrics in three weeks.
It is so wonderful to see the empowerment of the people coming back that they realize food is medicine and their health is in their handsnot medication or their doctors.
We do not teach to take them off their medicine to work with their physician as they recognize their blood pressure comes down. Their cholesterol comes down. Their BMI comes down. Depression is decreased socialization. It helps our environment and you can save 150 $200 a month eating Whole Foods plant-based diet.

Nope never vegan only or carnivore only! He is wrong for most of us but there are always exceptions of course. Eat a diet that's "largely plant-based people can choose to eat a small amount of animal products or none"
It's bordering on irresponsible having this message repeated.
I hope the good the good Doc will also interview Dr Shawn Baker

The antioxidants and nutrients that come from plants are necessary for longterm health and there are many in plants that aren't in meats and dairy. Things like proform VS preform vitamin A for example. Don't be ignorant guys.
Urea is a superior antioxidant. Don’t be ignorant.
Vit A uptaken is via the GLUT4 receptor which happens to be same pathway that glucose predominantly takes. From your statement I am guessing that you only know a small part of the story when it comes to digestion, bioavailability, nutrient uptake and biological requirements. You may be shocked to learn that your body produces all the anti-oxidants it needs when metabolically healthy and has evolved over millions of years to do so.
@@AKMcF you should delete your comment and go look this up cos actually Provitamins are vitamin precursors that do not function in the body until converted to active forms. Your body has to work twords additional chemical reactions and spend valuable time and energy in order to make use of it.
