Thank you Father Scott. I really was wondering about proper etiquette. So important for me to do this right when I go to church. Honestly, I haven't been to church since I was a little girl. I am now 60. It takes a lot of courage for me to go. You have done a great service for someone like me who doesn't want to embarrass themself.
Hi Fr. Scott.. So hoping that one day your parish moves the glorious tabernacle to the CENTER of the sanctuary where it truly deserves to be. Many blessings to you, Father and thanks for your video.
I learned something new! As a "cradle Catholic", I have attended Mass every Sunday and learned what to do by watching others. But no one ever explained the "rules", so I've had some questions. For example, I didn't know until after college that you're supposed to genuflect on both knees when the Eucharist is exposed in Adoration. And while the off-center tabernacle isn't ideal, it's good to know what to do in those situations. Thank you for the video!
Thanks for the explanation Fr.Scott. There is so much confusion about how to act at the Church that I even feel uncomfortable being there, to the point ,I prefer skipping services. This is the first video I watch from you, which I thank you . At least, It is only one question out of doub of the many I have with no answers. I hope and pray you can continue these kind of teachings. I think what is keeping people away from the Mother Church is the ignorances toward the teachings of the Church as it is my case. I just don't know, but I want to learn. May God Bless you.
Father Scott, thank you very much for posting this. I returned to the Church today, after many years of absence. I remembered some things from growing up- but not everything. Your videos helped clear up many questions I had today. I now feel like a confident Catholic again.
In the TLM you kneel and stay knelt at the mid section, where God became Man, of the Nicene Creed. This is a nice and reverent touch. I still do it at every Mass where the Creed is prayed. I bow deeply when I arrive behind the person ahead of me receiving Holy Communion. I kneel and receive the Host on my tongue. The traditional and reverent way. Parishes with a relocated tabernacle tend to be a bit irreverent or worse during most of the liturgy. Why not? Why would you move it from the center of attention and honor on the center of the altar in the first place? I bow when the Crucifix carried by a server passes by me during Mass and when the priest or deacon pass by during the celebration. After all, isn't the priest representing Christ during the Mass. I kneel for the "Sanctus." This is not Rad Trad, holier than thou stuff. This is what our fathers, grandfathers and earlier did as befits the reverence due to God and his representatives in the Mass. Orémus Y'all.
I winced when Fr. mentioned the Tabernacle is "over in the corner". I also assist in the TLM. The Eucharist is always to be front and center in the Church and in our lives. At the stripping of the altar in Passion week the Eucharist is moved to the sacristy and as I'm helping prepare for the Mass and after Mass restoring the Church for the host Novus Ordo community all of us in the sacristy genuflected repeatedly as we went about our duties every time we passed in front of Our Lord, same as if He were in the altar Tabernacle. It's really no wonder that we as Catholics have lost the faith of the True Presence, we don't worship Him as truly present. Bowing before entering the sanctuary shouldn't be a thing, because Our Lord belongs there and should always be a genuflecting. And ALWAYS a both-knees-down double genuflection before the exposed Blesssed Sacrament in Adoration, preferably with a bow down to the floor. If we truly believe what we profess these are really minuscule actions. God Bless!
Thanks so much. So helpful. I especially appreciate: "long words - genuflect and tabernacle", "short words - altar and bow". This definitely will stick in my memory. Thanks!
What a fantastic lesson you have just given it's a pity more people don't hear it I have been trying to teach people to genuflect to the tabernacle for years but a lot of people don't even appreciate what is in the tabernacle That's the next lesson you need to give God bless you father well done A new subscriber Sylvia
Thank you Fr. Scott, this is helpful but you need to move the Tabernacle to the centre of the Sanctuary, bring back the pews and kneelers, bring back the Altar rail and bring back receiving the Holy Eucharist on the tongue. God bless. ✝️
Why do people have to leave so many negative comments. If you don't believe in what we as Catholics do, so be it, but leave us alone. Better yet, open your heart and see what we do in person. There is a reason for everything we do. I am not a cradle Catholic, so I have been to your churches. Now, try returning the favor or go away.
Are you referring to those who follow the true Catholic church and Faith, or the watered down, wishy washy, pseudo catholic "faith" exhibited in most, disrespectful, unchristian "catholic" churches today?
@@geraldinegregory.1803 perhaps your focus should shift from that of being a self proclaimed "true Catholic" to how can I help remedy those who may be astray in and out of the Catholic faith. You have been Blessed with a good habit! In the front of the Latin Missal there's an indulgenced prayer for entering and exiting any Church. "I adore You, oh Most Holy Lord, Jesus Christ. Here and in all Thy Tabernacles throughout the world because by Thy Holy Cross, Thou hast redeemed the world." I think possibly the prayer is from St. Francis of Asissi.
Fr Scott. Greetings from Canada. I wish that you had mentioned that people with mobility problems, not necessarily elderly people, eg. arthritic knees etc and find it physically impossible to genuflect can in good conscience bow instead, which is perfectly acceptable.
yes, I wish I would’ve mentioned that. maybe my next video will be for adults rather than for the children at our lady of the Valley Catholic school in Wasilla. thank you for your comment. Peace and God bless. Stay healthy, safe, and happy. Father Scott
I live in a senior community, and our parish church is within this community. I cannot genuflect anymore, so I make a profound bow. I think Jesus would be pleased with that too.
I appreciate the video Father. I can tell your love of our Lord. I hope your parish will receive the Eucharist on the tongue, soon. God bless you, and keep you.
Thank you for posting, simple practice's like you described can be overlooked. How to bow and why to bow are important factors in bringing our worship and adoration to the Mass.
I wish that instead of eyerolls, somebody could have helped me. I've asked about this multiple times and they never taught it in RCIA. Yes I've been doing it wrong but I wasn't horribly off. This is all the better reason do not just copy what you see other people doing. Thank you thank you for explaining this: to the point simply and now I'm excited to go back to mass and do it right.
Most of this confusion has been caused by the terrible post Vatican II directive to separate altars from tabernacles. It has only been made worse by the practice of placing tabernacles of to the side or in detached rooms in some cases. Liturgical speaking, the ancient tradition of keeping the tabernacle together with and directly above the altar is so important. The two are so connected. This is why avoid modern church temples as much as possible.
Thank you for the comment. I was taught right knee and sign of the cross with right hand. The Catholic Church likes uniformity. If you can do it with right knee fantastic. But I really don’t think Jesus would mind if you used the left. I hope that helps! Peace and God bless.
When the procession crucifix is carried in the beginning of the initial procession along the nave up to the sanctuary of the church, shouldn't the people in the benches make a head bow to it?
I always Genuflect going in and out of Mass. I also Genuflect before receiving communion (on the tongue of course) because they removed the alter rails?? There is simply not enough reverence nowadays. Also note : Tabernacle away to the side, no wonder the churches are empty. So sad.
@@BrianAtwood69 Unless you have consecrated hands then you are not worthy to handle the Body of Christ. The reason why most people receive in the hand is that they do not believe in the True Presence. If you really believe that Christ is truly present , Body and Blood, in the Host, then you can not just stand and receive in the hand. If people truly believed they would want to (at least) kneel, and would ONLY receive on the tongue. Without consecrated hands, we are FORBIDDEN to touch the Holy Species.
@@geraldinegregory.1803 I believe that's presumptuous on your part. It's certainly not taught in doctrine. The first few centuries of Christianity, receiving by hand was the norm. In the Bible, communion was passed out among the people to eat. It wasn't until the middle ages that receiving by tongue became universal. And to assume you're holier than those who receive by hand is a sinful prejudice. You are not in any position to presume another's belief.
@@SpecimenB He didn't assume that he's holier, he made a valid argument. Receiving on the tongue doesn't make you holier, since it's the bare minimum. Also, whether the early Church received communion on the hand or not is not as clear as you say, since there's also evidence that receiving on the tongue was the norm. Furthermore, his statement that most people don't believe in the True Presence is a fact, at least in the Western world. aleteia.org/2019/08/21/what-to-do-about-the-69-of-catholics-who-dont-believe-in-the-real-presence/ Edit: It's not helpful to accuse someone who calls for reverence of "sinful prejudice". Ironically, this itself could be rooted in pride.
Many years ago this was not taught, like this way in our old parish chapel in Scotland, and we had a real old fashioned parish priest in charge. We genuflected during mass, remember it well, those going up to read did head bow, perhaps we all had it wrong, but our tough old priest never said anything, he pulled us up on many occasions for other matters.
I had a similar experience with a strict Dominican at a lunchtime Mass in 2012. I've been a lay celibate 24 years, and wore a white shirt and black jacket. He accused me of impersonation and I told him what I was. I've been heartbroken since I was a teenager.
Respectfully disagreeing: Not to bow to someone’s back, but only bow directly to Jesus, and preferably as He is being raised to you. Even better if we could kneel…. Thank you for this video.
As long as you don’t mind making the priest wait while you bow and the people behind you wait, not a problem, Jesus knows you are not bowing to someone’s back, but showing respect to God.
There's nothing stopping you from kneeling to recieve the Lord. Mass is not to be rushed, I prefer a long slow Communion line because there's more time to pray. If I am ever refused the reception of the Lord because I am kneeling and have my mouth open I will not receive. I mean no disrespect to anyone but I'm not worthy to ever touch Our Lord except for the possibility of trying to prevent a Host from falling to the floor, even then it should be the priest to recover the Host.
To Mattberg: I agree w/you. I would definitely kneel but wouldn’t be able to rise again gracefully w/out the altar rails! Actually, a few parishioners do kneel when receiving. No one seems to mind, and if they did they would be in the wrong. Folks in a hurry tend to leave before dismissal anyway, or they receive the Eucharist and walk straight out the door. No understanding of who they just received.
Thanks for the comment. Some cultures bow after receiving a blessing. In the United States, I think it is sufficient to do a slight head bow with your hands together and say thank you. Peace and God bless. Thank you for joining our wonderful Catholic Church.
I saw one video where the priest said before receiving the Eucharist that it was OK to make the sign of a cross. He did not mention anything about bowing at that time. It’s really hard.
The most appropriate comparison i have heard is when Mary saw that Jesus was missing from the tomb..and she was asking where they had put her lord...sad face..one day people will have to answer to God for destroying his alters and sticking the Eucharist in the corner..
Considering the Eucharist is brought to the altar every day, and that the tabernacle itself is always given reverence/ space where people can observe it, I don’t think it is a big deal, nor do I think you know better than a good percentage of catholic churches. If you have a problem with it you should probably give some sort of justification for what you propose.
Do not go to so-called churches where the tabernacle is at the side. They are heretical. Go to Traditional Churches, preferably the ones where mass is celebrated in Latin and ad orientem.
Rule number 1 You always kneel when receiving Jesus Rule number 2 You always receive Jesus on your tongue Not on your hands This is not given reverence to the true king💞
Kneeling should begin at the Sanctus. At the Elevation of the Sacred Host we should be praying "My Lord and My God!", at the Elevation of the chalice I pray for the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ to wash our poor souls clean. With a head bow and Sign of the Cross at both. Bells should also be rung for the Consecration, tower bells if possible...tell the whole world that Chist the King is on you altar!
Father Scott, during the celebration of mass, if the tabernacle is off to the side (not behind the altar), do we genuflect or deep bow at the waist? I know it's a certain circumstance. And could you cite the GIRM? I can't find the answer anywhere. I know that when mass is celebrated, the attention should be on the altar, where the Lamb is sacrificed, not the tabernacle.
Do not go to Churches where the tabernacle is at the side. They are heretical. Go to Traditional Churches, preferebly the ones where mass is celebrated in Latin and ad orientem.
How about bowing in instances when the name of Jesus or Holy Trinity is said/recited/chanted, i.e., minor doxology or Jesus during Gloria (I saw and learned this bodily posture from the Benedictines)?
In Poland, during Gloria you make a slight bow when Jesus' name is invoked, that is, 2 times. We also genuflect before receiving the Blessed Sacrament (well, at least I do)
Father Garrett, at the beginning of Mass, should we face the center of the church and bow to our priest as he passes the pew in which we are standing and then bow again at the end of Mass as he walks out?
You are not bowing for the priest as he passes by but for the Holy Bible the word of God as it held up and passes by you or when it is held up and pointed towards you.
If you attend the Traditional Latin Mass there are many opportunities to genuflect. It is a shame that the NO has abandoned this along with so many other wonderful and sacred traditions.
Question: if the Lord is working on someone's heart, and they can't wait any longer or until after service during invitation, would they be permitted to run to the altar?
During a Catholic mass, yes, it would be a distraction and out of the ordinary. Have that person ask the priest at that particular church what he thinks. I hope that helps! Have a great day. Peace.
Pre-modernist mass and churches didn’t need this explanations as they were more aligned to common and teological sense; the tabernacle and the altar were in one place and as a one piece; and Communion was given while kneeling on the altar rail. “Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi”
love the mnemonic devices, thank you! Proof of concept, you thought to use you own mnemonic device right at the end for genuflecting... long word, impressive illustration!
While the teaching is overall sound, I cannot help observing (1) If the Tabernacle is behind the Altar, as traditional altars are built, then what you get is the Crucifix on top, the Tabernacle and the Altar, all in a straight line. Any bowing or genuflecting is in 1 direction. By having to teach parishioners or children to have to look sideways for a genuflect, and face forward for a bow, is confusing. Are we bowing to Altar, when there is no Real Presence? Yes it is where consecration takes place, and Altars are blessed. But I think the all-in-one-line layout, again, that is actually THE layout till suddenly new-fangled ideas came. The second thing is, the bow before you take Communion in the hand. Again, that is respectful, and better than nothing. But also again, the traditional way is - barring immobility - taking Communion kneeling down. No confusion, no extra steps. In other words, the tradition is right; it is the "innovations" that cause confusion.
Thank for your thorough reply. Here is something to think about. If everyone genuflected when they came up for communion, and there were hundreds of people waiting for communion, the mass would be three hours, long, a slight exaggeration, but worth thinking about. Thanks again. Peace and God bless.
@@FrScottHikeswith all due respect Fr. ,what's the rush? I assist in the TLM using a communion rail, all receive kneeling and on the tongue. Is there a reason we cannot slow down and recieve our Lord without worrying about time? If you have not I encourage you to seek out the old Mass, probably difficult in Alaska but more than worth the effort. What if after three back surgery and possibly a fourth in my future and one quadruple bypass behind me. Genuflect is way to painful. Can I shallow now? Deep bow pretty painful too. And why is the Tabernacle not front and center?
Hi Bruce, you are by no means expected to genuflect or bow in your present condition. God knows your heart. about the tabernacle, I am no longer at that church, nor did I design it. if you look at the past 2022 years of the Catholic churches history you may notice that things evolve from generation to generation. I like how he stresses that we turn toward Our Lord (in the tabernacle) when we genuflect. We don’t actually genuflect “to the tabernacle” though. We genuflect to Jesus. When the tabernacle is empty, like on Good Friday, we don’t genuflect at all because Our Lord isn’t there. Pretty big distinction. If you pass a king on a throne and bow, you are honoring the king not the throne he’s on.

Sounds like a great way to show respect to the Blessed Sacrament. The only way genuflecting may be a little problematic during Mass is in the communion line when there are hundreds of people waiting for communion. If Everyone genuflected in the communion line, mass would be very much longer than the prescribed one hour.
@@FrScottHikes Father, we are ready to attend in lines for our favourite movie tickets. Can't we stand a little longer to genuflect before receiving Our Lord with due reverence?
I was Catholic and converted to Protestantism after reading Romans 7 and 8. All these rituals seem like "terms of the law" that Romans 7 speak of. It's nice to have motions...kneeling, genuflecting, etc. but thank God the substitutionary atonement of our Redeemer is a finished work, and all these things the priest speaks of are really superfluous to the gospel. We can't attain salvation by doing these things.....they are matters of respect, but the veil of the Holy of Holys was rent down the middle when Jesus took our punishment unto himself; ergo: God's sanctified "tabernancle" was now open for all to access, by faith. No more tabernacle needed, due to the finished atonement of Christ.
Great way to teach the children to put out their hands for communion...not even a 2 second mention of the option to receive on the tongue...so profoundly sad..
MissPopuri The bending knee should work, right? So long as the skirt isn’t uhhh inconvenient I imagine it’s probably fine. I’ve seen the girls my age who have wear modest skirts both genuflect on the knee, and do a sort of bow from the chest.
When accepting the Eucharist and the body of Christ we’re talking about one being able to accept it and two accepting it but the body being the body of people of Christ right? And not eating his body? Before my first confession I had a run in with old friends, they spoke to me and said we’re crazy because they didn’t understand why we do these things. Their minds are more devoted to other tasks throughout the day, they thought of us as cannibals. By saying the blood of Christ we mean we accept that we’re like blood to him right? Like we’re a family? And when we say a family we mean one and the same people right? Not like we’re blood relatives but that’s the whole entire idea of it right? Treating each other that way and accepting that’s what we WILL do and not what we ACTUALLY are? Descendants yes in some way maybe related but not an immediate sibling family member? I wanted to clarify this I lost the connection to those people and it’s a good thing I’ve been saved from that all. Thanks
"Whoever does not eat My flesh and drink My Blood has no life within them" Jesus was not an exaggerator nor a joker. I believe He doubled down on this statement five times. Many left Him because they could not accept this teaching. The True Presence is exactly that, THE TRUE PRESENCE OF THE BODY, BLOOD, SOUL AND DIVINITY OF CHRIST. Yes we absolutely through the miracle of transubstantiation receive the flesh of Jesus. The mainstream Church seems to downplay this fact by a lot of things, namely the change of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. I strongly encourage you to find a Traditional Latin Mass and immerse yourself in the Traditional Catholic teachings. It will change you life. God bless

Father Louie, that is a great comment. Respect comes from our hearts. And only God can read what is in the heart, If respect for the Blessed Sacrament is reflected in our hearts, and we are unable to genuflect, all is good with God! Thank you for bringing this up.

Hi Wanda, it is not s requirement to bow to the priest. Many cultures do it out of reverence and respect but bowing to the priest is not taught in our United States seminaries nor is it required by them. Fr Scott
Thanks again, Father Scott, for answering questions that I have had for many years but was always too afraid (or ashamed) to ask Father at my own church. Thanks to you, now I know!!!
I bow to mine out of reverence when he processes out after the blessing at the end of Mass. He isn't a big fan of it. My priest and parish are extremely liberal. Kyrie eleison!
Sorry Father, threre are three bows: the minimum (head)bow, the medium bow and the profound bow. The profound bow is made to to alter when the Blessed Sacrament is not behind the high altar or when genuflections are physically impossible. Medium bows are when the name of the Holy Father or the local bishop is named in the consecration at mass. Head bows are employed at the names of Jesus and Mary and the saint of the day. Acolytes never bow, but genuflect to the altareven if the Blessed Sacrament is elsewhere.
Where is tabernacle? It's like in court. Maybe in USA they just say 'Good morning' and no gowns nor wigs. No 'Silence please, all rise, court is now in session'.
Why would you bow to the back of the person ahead of you when receiving Communion. I was taught to bow to Jesus (the Host) before receiving Communion. Sounds like you are trying to save time??
Almighty God should be the center of our lives, but He is far left or far right in our churches. Father, how come we genuflect before the tabernacle and bow slightly before receiving The Lord? There's something not right here, isn't it? Also Fr, with all due respect, why do we take God in our hands? Shouldn't we receive The Lord kneeling and on the tong, in complete adoration? Thank you Father, God bless you.
Thank you for pointing these things out. You are absolutely right. How terribly sad it is that today so few people really believe that Christ is truly present.
@@geraldinegregory.1803 What is sad is that people believe Christ is in THAT.....instead of in the heart soul and spirit.. so if CHRIST IS IN THESE things.....sad when you die and can't take it with you.

Why would you move it from the center of attention and honor on the center of the altar in the first place?
I bow when the Crucifix carried by a server passes by me during Mass and when the priest or deacon pass by during the celebration.
After all, isn't the priest representing Christ during the Mass.
I kneel for the "Sanctus."
This is not Rad Trad, holier than thou stuff.
God Bless!
I am fully on board with you here!
Thanks so much. So helpful. I especially appreciate: "long words - genuflect and tabernacle", "short words - altar and bow". This definitely will stick in my memory. Thanks!

@@geraldinegregory.1803 perhaps your focus should shift from that of being a self proclaimed "true Catholic" to how can I help remedy those who may be astray in and out of the Catholic faith.

what's often forgotten is the bowing toward the held crucifixion at the beginning of mass as it comes up the aisle.
We bow during the Nicene Creed. The crucifix reminds that Christ celebrates the Mass while the priest or bishop represents Him.
Thank you Father Scott. Most useful.
So much for same page. The Sisters of Mercy taught us to pray while genuflecting, "Jesus, I adore you in the Blessed Sacrament."

I wish that instead of eyerolls, somebody could have helped me. I've asked about this multiple times and they never taught it in RCIA. Yes I've been doing it wrong but I wasn't horribly off. This is all the better reason do not just copy what you see other people doing. Thank you thank you for explaining this: to the point

and now I'm excited to go back to mass and do it right.

I always Genuflect going in and out of Mass. I also Genuflect before receiving communion (on the tongue of course) because they removed the alter rails??
There is simply not enough reverence nowadays. Also note : Tabernacle away to the side, no wonder the churches are empty. So sad.
Receiving the body by hand isn't any less reverent than receiving it on the tongue.
Furthermore, his statement that most people don't believe in the True Presence is a fact, at least in the Western world. aleteia.org/2019/08/21/what-to-do-about-the-69-of-catholics-who-dont-believe-in-the-real-presence/

Many years ago this was not taught, like this way in our old parish chapel in Scotland, and we had a real old fashioned parish priest in charge. Good point. You can actually bow when you’re carrying anything. It’s just not recommended or taught. Peace and God bless.
@@FrScottHikes Thanks Father!
Thanks for clarifying that Father.
Thank you for this simple guide. Very useful for a non-Catholic new to attending Catholic church. Question: Should one bow after receiving a blessing?
Thanks for the comment. Some cultures bow after receiving a blessing. In the United States, I think it is sufficient to do a slight head bow with your hands together and say thank you. Peace and God bless. Thank you for joining our wonderful Catholic Church.
Thank You father
I saw one video where the priest said before receiving the Eucharist that it was OK to make the sign of a cross. He did not mention anything about bowing at that time. It’s really hard.
I go to the Traditional Latin Mass.
The tabernacle should be on the High Altar, not stuck away in the corner.
Dunsapie how sad that Jesus has been removed from His rightful place in the centre of the alter, a sign of the times
@@fabrizio483 Just because it doesn't meet your personal preference doesn't make it a heresy. Reread Canon 938.

The church I used to attend doesn't kneel during consecration. They stand much throughout
If the tabernacle isn't centered with the altar, before and after Mass, you genuflect to the tabernacle and then bow to the altar.
How about bowing in instances when the name of Jesus or Holy Trinity is said/recited/chanted, i.e., minor doxology or Jesus during Gloria (I saw and learned this bodily posture from the Benedictines)?
You are quite right. Trouble is, today so few people really believe in the True Presence of Jesus Christ within the Tabernacle or on the Altar.
Hi Wanda, we make the sign of the cross when the priest processes past us at the gathering and the sending forth
You are not bowing for the priest as he passes by but for the Holy Bible the word of God as it held up and passes by you or when it is held up and pointed towards you.
Thanks! Great explanation.

Is it ok to bow after the person in front of me has taken the bread so I’m not bowing to their head?
Please do not refer to the Body of Christ as bread. If you do not believe in the True Presence of the Lord in the Consecrated Host you're a protestant
Question: if the Lord is working on someone's heart, and they can't wait any longer or until after service during invitation, would they be permitted to run to the altar?

@@FrScottHikes It wouldn't be a distraction to the service?
During a Catholic mass, yes, it would be a distraction and out of the ordinary. Have that person ask the priest at that particular church what he thinks. I hope that helps! Have a great day. Peace.
Pre-modernist mass and churches didn’t need this explanations as they were more aligned to common and teological sense; the tabernacle and the altar were in one place and as a one piece; and Communion was given while kneeling on the altar rail. “Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi”

Why is the tabernacle in the corner?
Gracias Padre.
de nada. la Paz con Tigo! 😊
Also.. the Tabernacle should be located in the middle of the alter area … not the side or in another room , like some newer churches have it.

Avoid the problem all together and Do Not where a short skirt to church.
God bless

Other circumstances for liturgical bows exists..

Why is your Tabernacle not in Center of your Altar. Surely as everyone comes into church Christ is in Tabernacle waiting and shouldn't be stuck in corner of your church. I think that's really offensive to Our Blessed Lord and Master.
