Obsidian were kings in making video game sequels. Just look at what they did with KOTOR. I know KOTOR 2 wasn't exactly finished when it came out, but it improved on the 1st game in a lot of ways and they only had like a year to finish it and it was still an AMAZING game.
But is that Bethesda talking... or Todd himself. I don't think this is Bethesda vs Obsidian, after all Bethesda is suppose to be part of the big XBox Family now. I think this is just Todd vs Obsidian. I think the nemesis system being copyrighted worked only as an exception since, as far as I'm aware, no other game was doing anything even remotely close to that anyway. If anyone were to have any plans for a nemesis system it would just be other AAA games, which they already weren't doing. It's not like it snuffed out any indie projects either. I think that's the only reason the copyright was allowed.
Of all the games that leeched off each other for decades, brown/gray everything, regen health, bleeding eyes vision... It had to be a great system everyone wants more of.
Let's be honest here, the whole fee had NOTHING to do with why Sweeney started the epic store. This whole thing was just some super petty thing because the guy had some kind of personal problem with steam(maybe they had the nice office? They are in the same building) and probably some super big ego going because Fortnite makes way too much money. And one thing people tend to forget is that Epic already gets their money by licensing their engine, you know Unreal, pretty much one of the biggest engines out there. they don't NEED to get the 30% because developers already paid them before the game was even released.
Convenience mostly. GOG is the only other storefront that directly competes with Steam and it's mostly for the same reason why people prefer steam over EPIC. People just don't want to deal with several launchers (it's bad enough I'm forced to use 3), just have everything all on one platform. GOG is the exception because you don't need the store front to launch games because it's 100% DRM free, it's purely something you use to purchase said games. It's also WAY more user friendly than EPIC. EPIC has the potential to go head to head with steam and there are some things that epic does better than Steam but the cons vastly outweigh the pro and until they actually do something about that makes people take notice, they will continue to use steam.
The Nintendo backstabbing of 91 is always an interesting story, them literally creating a monster. I’ve lived 30 odd years in between Dundee and Newcastle in a little place called Edinburgh, and I can’t say I’ve ever heard of a rivalry between those two cities… 🤔
My steam account was created 3 days after steam released to the public. Steam was viewed as a PITA to the CS community but they really did it justice and that was one of the best times I ever had in my life.
I've owned both Sony and Nintendo consoles together since the PS1 launched in 1995. I've never come home to find the two electronic boxes duking it out in my living room. They're just sitting on their shelves, waiting for me to play the incredible games that are available for each platform.
What's even worse is when companies don't care about their IP's (recently SEGA announced that Hatsune Miku Project DIVA is done for good thy disbanded the development team so it's very unlikely we will be getting more from the series, annoying that they focus on Project Sekai more when it is the lesser game) and just in case they delist Project DIVA Mega Mix and Future Tone, i imported physical copies for them both, i'm not about to lose those games in the all digital future :(
The PUBG drama, if I remember correctly, came from, Epic helped the Dev with PUBG, saw it was popular and decided to "borrow" basically the entire concept and put it into the engine of their horde survival game. (Which I was personally waiting for, ha ha) Then when promoting it, basically said "It's PUBG where you can build stuff."
2:27 that’s not true or the key separating factor. It’s price and release schedule if the consoles. It’s been found through various surveys and such that most ps5 owners also have a switch
Like other point out , Nemesis system is patented not copyrighted, but also concept if it’s articulated in a way that is non-obvious can be patented , the two known examples are the Namco’s loading screen mini games patent(that’s why for a long long time you don’t see mini games in loading screen) and Sega’s Crazy Taxi parent, so yes even though is ridiculously, company can patent game concepts
A lot of people forget that PUBG is the OG battle royal. The crator first made a mod for arma 3 that brought battle royal. From there he created PUBG. Please correct me if I'm wrong. But honestly, arma mods spawned games like DayZ and PUBG. The modding community is the true hero in gaming.
Tim Sweeney is a comedian. EGS has barebones functionality. Let's see the platform rival Steam in terms of features and then we'll talk about how much is fair to take from game sales.
I'd say, in terms of a company trying to buy out another, that Vivendi going hard after Ubisoft was memorable. They were pretty aggressive for years, and it only ended after they got Tencent to take in some of those shares. Now you have them doing increases in stock as well, up to 10%. Wait. Tencent is short for Tenpercent. Man, Ubisoft should've seen that coming.
The reason the epic games store can't topple steam is because steam has exposure, and a standing, loyal fanbase. If they can figure out how to pass games down to family members, then we'll really be talking.
It's always interesting how everyone has developed amnesia about how Rockstar STOLE its GTA "formula" from SEGA's game creator Yu Suzuki's original Shenmue. Before Shenmue, GTA was simply a top down game with GTA 2. Rockstar's GTA 3 was a rip off of HIS formula. BEFORE Shennue, there was NO game featuring the entering of multiple buildings, dynamic weather, day and night cycles, NPCs having their own schedule, businesses in games having business hours, QTEs! ALL of Rockstar's "formula" was STOLEN from the mind of Yu Suzuki and Shenmue!
Tim Sweeny being bamboozleled that steam takes 30% cut and still wins while doing absolutely nothing to improve epic store front is just such a laugh, he doesn't want to compete he just wants everyone else to fail
Maybe I misread but I thought BGS liked Obsidian generally and took some amount of inspiration from them and whatnot. BethSoft was just dumb, especially with that metacritic score-dictated-bonus thing. But idk, nowadays BGS is an enigma lol
Capcom vs SNK. while we know now they got better with their relationships and made collaboration titles(including the SF6 DLC), the tense between the two companies were so hot during the 90's even I felt it although I wasn't living in Japan.
Fun Video, agree with a lot of the points I liked the true crime and driver series, they were kind of their own thing and should have leaned more into their roles, true crime being a cop set in a open world with cool fighting/shooting mechanics ) and driver being more focused on really good driving mechanics and interesting vehicle choices. but at the end of the day money talks and Rockstar nailed their series out of the park.
Regarding the Nemesis System, an indie game called Star Renegades uses a very similar concept, I don't know how they implemented it tho. They prolly won't get sued because it's a small indie game, but at least it exists.
Hey so 9:00 you made a slight problem. Save the World in Fortnite is currently in new development and we are getting updates. They are slow but we are getting them.
18:02 yeah you’re not wrong, the best thing done to a fallout game was the ammo crafting, that said fallout 76 is like a prime example of what kinds of features need to be in a main fallout game.. and a prime example of what features need to be left in an online game. You act like he's Phil Spencer who genuinely doesn't hate PlayStation and has said several times he has always loved their consoles, has owned every one they released, and strives to make Xbox be as good as PlayStation not out of wanting to beat them but out of respect for them.
@@clovisursa497 is this a copypasta?
@@raypalmer5125 I’ll copy your pasta
@@Verchiel_Yeah, like, even Chris Avellone and Josh Sawyer debunked the stupid "Beth vs Obsidian" thing, so the lie still being perpetuated is kinda just... cringe.
3:25 this is funny because when i needed to install a game on stream, the game made me install an epic game software, that software was like "put an ID and password to log" kinda thing, and even than, surprising no one, the game still didn't work
10 game companies the HATE EACH OTHER ❌️
10 game companies the have BEEF ✅️
Its actually 20 for it to happen 10 times
Always happy to see Dundee get a name check. For a city of just under 150k people we did some great things in the video game world! ❤
Any tips to improving a small gaming channel?
Be Creative.Don't be annoyed or ashamed to see your videos comments, also try to know and understand your audiance. Finally DON"T GIVE UP....GOOD LUCK!!!!
I love these videos because I learn things about the creators of some of my favorite games but I was not expecting the brutality of “the poster child for failing upwards”. Falcon the sniper.
Companies I hate because they hate their own customers : Rockstar, Nintendo, TakeTwo, Activision, Konami, Blizzard and EA...
I love Rockstars games but I really hate how they treat PC gamers.. They literally treat us all like we are scum😅
What I love about Fortnite is that Save the World is kinda like the prologue to the story of the Battle Royale mode. Everything in Save the World is still canon to the story of Fortnite and happened before all this got started. They could have easily scrapped it and said "Nah, that's been retconned."
You forgot about Konami vs Kojima production.......
Kojima vs budget/development time
Obsidian were kings in making video game sequels. Just look at what they did with KOTOR. I know KOTOR 2 wasn't exactly finished when it came out, but it improved on the 1st game in a lot of ways and they only had like a year to finish it and it was still an AMAZING game.
The whole “Bethesda v obsidian” thing is even more interesting after what Todd Howard was saying regarding other developers working on their IPs
But is that Bethesda talking... or Todd himself. I don't think this is Bethesda vs Obsidian, after all Bethesda is suppose to be part of the big XBox Family now.
I think this is just Todd vs Obsidian. Its Todd's games, each locked in development hell cause he micromanages everything himself, and that a studio put out a better game in shorter time than him, really hurt him personally.
Only thing close I can think of would be AC Odyssey with the mercenary system.
I feel Bethesda hates sibling Obsidian because everybody loves New Vegas the most.
Real simple answer to that though: Most games from Obsidian actually "do just work" 😂
@@TTRPG_Witch_Leonlol 😅😂
That and Obsidian actually puts the RP into their G. The last time Bethesda made a legitimate Roleplaying Game was Oblivion and it literally shows.
did not know alot of this
Thank you !
Can you make a part 2?
Epic Games thinks they're him
Theyre not that guy
Man I truly hate the epic app. I don't understand how it can be so bloated and terrible.
Nemesis system is patented not copyrighted and is absolutely enforceable.
It’s not the code but the concept itself that is protected by the patent.
Kinda weird though how steam takes a way bigger percentage but people more often choose steam over epic makes you wonder
They really want episode 3 to be released.
First to market.
@@bronzin1445 GoG is also the exception because they're targeting the older gamer and games. Steams not really doing that.
Nemesis system wasn't copyright'd, it was patented, which means it covers the concept, not the code.
The Nintendo backstabbing of 91 is always an interesting story, them literally creating a monster. Nintendo must’ve felt like fools especially after the Philips failure and the complete domination of PlayStation for 2 generations, the entirety of 2000’s. There’s so many iconic PS games we probably wouldn’t have gotten if Nintendo didn’t backstab Sony.
Nintendo never learns and they are extremely petty. Give me back the Garry's Mods mods.
@@dansmith1661 Haven't people already figured it was a copyright troll? Like why wait 20 years to pull the trigger, or issue the takedown through an email company they never used before from Denmark when they have two legal emails of their own
Other way around champ, go read the actual history of this instead of this skewed bs "sony did nothing wrong" as it is every time.
If I had a dollar for every time Falcon and Gameranx make mention of Driv 3r 😂😂😂
Just wondering if you guys will do a video like "10 game companies that gamers love" and the reasons why. I think it'll help expose smaller companies that have great games
I’ve lived 30 odd years in between Dundee and Newcastle in a little place called Edinburgh, and I can’t say I’ve ever heard of a rivalry between those two cities… 🤔
Make love, not hate ❤️
Way to capitalize on the Drake beef! Awesome video
Christopher Judge (if he were a company) and Activision 😂
That was a game awards highlight lmao
My steam account was created 3 days after steam released to the public. Steam was viewed as a PITA to the CS community but they really did it justice and that was one of the best times I ever had in my life.
“Babe wake up! New Falcon gameranx vid just dropped!”
I've owned both Sony and Nintendo consoles together since the PS1 launched in 1995. I've never come home to find the two electronic boxes duking it out in my living room. They're just sitting on their shelves, waiting for me to play the incredible games that are available for each platform.
What's even worse is when companies don't care about their IP's (recently SEGA announced that Hatsune Miku Project DIVA is done for good thy disbanded the development team so it's very unlikely we will be getting more from the series, annoying that they focus on Project Sekai more when it is the lesser game) and just in case they delist Project DIVA Mega Mix and Future Tone, i imported physical copies for them both, i'm not about to lose those games in the all digital future :(
0:50 This is a classic “Top 10 Anime Betrayals” entry
tim sweeney is almost the sole reason not to buy with epic store...
Calling RIP to your opps in your game is crazzzzzy
The PUBG drama, if I remember correctly, came from, Epic helped the Dev with PUBG, saw it was popular and decided to "borrow" basically the entire concept and put it into the engine of their horde survival game. (Which I was personally waiting for, ha ha) Then when promoting it, basically said "It's PUBG where you can build stuff."
2:27 that’s not true or the key separating factor. It’s price and release schedule if the consoles. It’s been found through various surveys and such that most ps5 owners also have a switch
Fallout 4 was the first Fallout game I played and to this day I enjoy it immensely.
I remember alot of those games and now seeing they had alot of meaning behind them is crazy.
Never thought I'd hear falcon say dundee feels special
10 pairs of games companies…
For how many great videos these guys put out, a miswording is easily forgiven. 🤙🏼
I’m definitely aging myself but top down GTA was epic. I don’t care how we look at it today, I had so much fun playing that back in the day.
Sony and Nintendo briefly acknowledged each other when Reggie Fils-Aimé, Phil Spencer, and Shawn Layden shared the stage at The Game Awards once.
What about Marvel and Capcom? MvC Infinite literally ended their relationship, their games pioneered back in the 90s.
Marvel is not a game company though…
One hit wonder. Fortnite being a smash hit is the only reason the epic store even exists. And it’s shite. Valve till I drop dead
Epic: "WE SHALL OVERTAKE VALVE, LETS DO THISSSSS. WOOOOOOOOOOO"
Valve: "Huh? Who are you?"
Maybe I misread but I thought BGS liked Obsidian generally and took some amount of inspiration from them and whatnot. BethSoft was just dumb, especially with that metacritic score-dictated-bonus thing. But idk, nowadays BGS is an enigma lol
The 5A response from CDPR is potentially a reference to the 5-blade meme (Onion article), which makes it even more funny.
Capcom vs SNK. while we know now they got better with their relationships and made collaboration titles(including the SF6 DLC), the tense between the two companies were so hot during the 90's even I felt it although I wasn't living in Japan.
Fun Video, agree with a lot of the points
I liked the true crime and driver series, they were kind of their own thing and should have leaned more into their roles, true crime being a cop set in a open world with cool fighting/shooting mechanics ) and driver being more focused on really good driving mechanics and interesting vehicle choices. but at the end of the day money talks and Rockstar nailed their series out of the park.
I’m so invested in the trifles of these billion dollar companies!
Regarding the Nemesis System, an indie game called Star Renegades uses a very similar concept, I don't know how they implemented it tho. They prolly won't get sued because it's a small indie game, but at least it exists.
Missed out on the 3D Realms vs Gearbox situation with Duke Nukem. Randy...
I want to craft, and I like the camp building, I don’t like always needing to be online or paying to not be.
Real gamers know battle royals started way back with arma king of the hill
Im still salty about tne nemesis system. One of the best things to come out of games in the last decade
