  • This week on Branching out Permaculture with Curtis Hanlon. Its that time of year to start collecting the nuts from trees you wish propagate. This time Im showing how to propagate northern red oak acorns as we get them ready for stratification. EP185.

The small hole at the top is the opening for a small red worm... Does not hurt the oak tree itself, just the nut. Red oaks are beneficial for attracting dragon flies 😊. Around here I just walk around in the spring and dig up the freshly germinated acorns and transplant them, tap root, acorn and stem all at once.
The hickory will be far more challenging, as most of them will be sterile...
My niece makes a flour and bakes bread with red oak acorns. Found that cutting the nut in half with secateurs is easy way to remove the nut meat. Takes nearly a bushel of nuts to get enough flour for one loaf though.
How are your air layered offsets coming along? Much love 💕

thats good info. i was wondering how to attract more dragons flies as they eat a lot of mosquitoes. the air layering has been challenging as the branch itself would bend over and break but i do have a few left and will show an update when i get to them. stay tuned kiddo and thanks for always checking out whats going on at branchingout. 😀
