I want to add a few details about this trip that I have been getting questions and comments about. Regarding wind break, the wind direction of my campsite was very favorable, the main force of the wind was hitting the big trees behind my tent, but occasional wind gusts where hitting my tent from the foot and head end, those are the strong gusts you can see in the video. I angled my tent so the gusts would hit the less exposed foot end, with occasional gusts hitting the head end. This spot was nice and flat and had good snow for anchoring my tent well, I dig down my Helsport snow pegs, my hiking pole and my ice axe to provide solid anchors, so I had no need to use the snow shoes as additional anchors. A consideration in this wind regarding tree cover is also to make sure that the trees I shelter behind are strong so they don’t have a chance of blowing down and hitting me. You are not allowed to cut branches off living trees so cutting branches off to shelter closer to a tree is not an option.
Greetings from Arizona! FANTASTIC! Loved the video. Gale wind and blizzard conditions and you went camping,! You're one tough cowboy my friend!! Lolol. I subscribed! Love Norway! Look forward to seeing more content from you. Thanks for taking us on this adventure it was great!
The Tempest : sonate in black and white. You don't need "dreaming of a white Christmas", you'll certainly have it. For us in Flanders snow is a decorum that is poetic on the country, but causes a lot of problems in the cities. For you, Norwegians, Sweden, Finnish, its part of daily winterlife. In seach weather conditions we stay in our homes near the fire. You, you love snow and icy temperatures, you cann't resist to defy it - as you already did by minus 20, isn't it, in the snow but without stormy conditions. Setting up your tent this time wasn't easy . But as an experienced man, you went through all this. Very brave ! Thanks , Jarl, for letting us participate at your adventure !
How cosy it is to watch you do what I love In an environment as such, thankyou for your endurance which I know you also love. These wild weather adventures are the best 😊
I like watch your videos at night before sleeping. The sound of nature is relaxing and just plain beautiful. Thank you for the quietness of the videos without the loud "car salesman" talk in many other wilderness/backpacking videos.
Thank you for taking me along with your video. I've never camped in snow. A regret of mine. I actually lived in snow country before and even taught skiing. But now I get cold when the temperature dips into the 6o's (Fahrenheit) and put on thermals when it gets into the 50's. I can still enjoy the beauty of the snow in the pines and the majestic mountains veiled by snow storms and clouds. Thank you again.
What a great feeling, the fist good winter camp. I love the isolation, the desolation. Knowing there are no people with in at least 20 miles of you and the closes road is 10 miles away.. by your self in the face of nature.. I can not longer get out there like I used to.. at 70 the cold seems to go right though me these days.. But I remember... Thank you for this video.. it was like being there again for a moment
I'm glad you survived the night by - 10 !, Jarl. From my armchair (!!) I enjoyed the poetic picture of the snowcovered pinetrees - a Christmas postcard ! - such as I imagined them when I was young in the Bjørndal-saga, covering the whole surface of Norway. :-) The music was in the blowing howling wind that merciless swept the icy snowflakes into your face. Although you cann't resist going out even by tempest, you are a courageous man, Jarl. Thank you for enduring the cold adventure !
My dear Norwegian Xplorer! You are seriously craaaazy! But this was awesomely beautiful. I grew up in Minnesota, and we would be sleeping in on a "snow day" in weather like this!
Winter camping is basically suffering management in my opinion! Good job getting after it and going out to test yourself and your gear against the elements. I enjoyed the video.
I grew up in simular weather conditions like that. Always loved grabbing some gear for the day and getting out. Some folks don't understand how someone can just go out into that kind of weather. I always say, "no one out there to bother you". Can't wait to move back home next year. I really enjoyed the video and thanks for sharing. John.
I hate the cold long winters. And I am a norwegian! But, there is a surtain gratitude after a trip like this. The warmth of a fire, dry clothes and a grogg! Transl. Grogg : a good hearty drink! 👍🇳🇴❤️
It’s very cold for me, my country in the winter temperature about 12-18 C and 1- 2 C on the highest mountain. I have learned life in winter snow. I think it’s very hard for me to go outside. Thanks for sharing and learn how to face the snow storm. 🙏😊👏❤️
Beautiful scenery, looks absolutely too cold for me to be anywhere close to those conditions, so I thank you for taking us along and sharing this video. Now, I must venture to the kitchen to get some hot chocolate to warm up after watching this video 😀.

Cool, I have several good winter tents, this is a Hilleberg Soulo, known for being one of the strongest 4 season tents there is..made in arctic Sweden.
Tremendous extreme weather wilderness filmmaking! A cinematic gem. I love everything about this film, in particular you falling over in the snow as you break down your tent - and the night-time tent setup scene where you kneel and take it all in. Great opening by the way! ✌🏽

Excellent, there’s so few posts on winter camping where people know to pile up the snow to help insulate the tent. I would recommend larger snow shoes and if possible a small candle in a safe container. There’s something about a flame that makes a difference on these trips. Cheers from Canada.
