  • In this detailed video, Simon Gawesworth explains how to fish a dry fly in a river downstream. Most anglers fish a dry fly to trout by casting upstream, but the downstream dry fly can give anglers a great edge when it comes to catching a particularly wary trout. Simon shows how to get an effective presentation of a dry fly to a rising fish when cast downstream, and also explains how to carefully approach the casting aspect to avoid scaring a fish.
    Any angler watching this video will be left with the knowledge of this very effective river trout fly fishing technique, and will learn a few of the subtleties that make it so deadly. Simon finishes the film by catching a beautiful, large cutthroat trout from under a tricky tree branch.

    If you’re paid to go fishing , you need to deliver the goods and Simon delivers, every time.
    ‘’Epic’’, as the man says.

    Simon, you have helped make my passion even better! You probably don't hear me, but I'm talking to you every "fishing" weekend!! All your how to's end up on my river!! Thank you ever so much!!!

    Usually I'll go upstream and hook the cast to keep it out of the fish's face but sometimes currents don't play nice. When it all comes together the down stream dry is truly awesome!

    Thanks. That will help out. Many creeks i fish has to be fished downstream cause upstream is blocked.

    Great video, very helpful! Early on he says there is no way a fish would take a fly dragging across the surface, but at 04:50 this is disproven when a fish takes the fly while it’s under drag. Sometimes downstream with drag (skating) can be a effective way to fish.

      I was going to comment on that, I can, without doubt, tell you a trout will take a dry down stream as it pulls tight and skates on the surface.

      Quite common to see people fish a dry fly wet and catch fish. Do you hitch your bug for cleaner retrieval. Shake it up and try everything. I've seen salmon chase a dry fly up the side of a rock and take

    My man busted out a whole spool of line! Lmfao. Rio sells 12' leader. Which is what I get just for this very same type of fishing. Helps save me some tippet. 🎣🤗😎

    I'm not a pro like you but I cast up stream and let it float down and past me and pull in slack when needed and it has worked for me ( many years )

      Upstream dry fly fishing is definitely the preferred means of presenting the fly, however, sometimes you don't have a choice so Simon does a great job of detailing how to do this properly. Thanks for feedback!

      @newflyfisher  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      we all have issues with drag on flies but once you master some of these techniques, then you will catch more fish. have fun learning!

      Don't stress yourself out about doing things right or wrong too much. You will learn. Main thing is to have fun and you will learn a lot more. And most of the stuff you learn will be from simply getting out there as much as you can. Remember rocks rock, foam is home and wood is good.

      I find lakes & ponds more effective than streams...i usually fish from a...Kayak...i know that that is sacrilege but its not about how much equipment you have but how to find & catch the fish.

      @sanchopancho6735 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's certain situations it's your only option but quartering down is the move for sure.

    I always feel fishing downstream w a dry is cheating, it's too easy. I call it walking the dog.
