Layne was awesome. Irreplaceable. He's also gone. I LOVE old AIC but my God yall need to grow up. This "Will vs. Layne" or "Will sucks" or "this isn't AIC"..all childish. Hats off to Jerry for keeping it going. Children exit stage left and pop in a Winger CD.
...listen to mike inez at 1:29, saying it's a real simple riff but it kills his fingers.... it involves bending the first string (the heaviest), at the first fret (right after the nut, and the most difficult place and string to bend on the fretboard) and even the most seasoned fingers get sore... it is a bit unusual. but it sounds insane, and that's why we love jerry!!!
hah Jerry "I got blisters on my fingers!" first time i heard that line at the end of Helter Skelter i laughed so hard. and hearing jerry say it made me laugh haha....
"I got blisters in my fingers" - The Beatles are sill alive!! Great song and great new album for AIC... I have seen they in Milano on 2nd of December 2009... amazing live!!
I had to look him up. Duh - Fuel's singer! Great pipes. Cantrell doesn't have the grit in his voice (a voice I love) to carry the entire AIC catalog, which is why he had someone else to do harmonies with on those songs on his solo tours. They're obviously easing fans into Duvall by using more of Cantrell on this album. They've said there will be more of Duvall on the next one which will probably solidify which fans are going to follow them and which will stay with the original AIC.
They completely destroyed at the Portland, OR show the other night. I'm so glad William doesn't try to sound like Layne, he's something different. We miss you Layne, and your legacy is being carried by the right guy.
Ken Jones You can take it this way: just because the band keeps rocking, although with a different singer, many more people can eventually learn about Layne who will be even more recognized, loved and missed and his legacy will continue. Because I think plenty of people missed out on "Layne era" which is basically a crime...so to speak. Big kudos to the "old" band members, you've been through loads and you managed to pull yourselves together which I thank you for. (But still, I would probably give anything to see a live concert back in the early 90s with the ORIGINAL members ;-(
I can't say enough how FUCKING amazing the new cd is. William Duvall is an awesome addition. In the end I am glad they kept the band as AIC and did not change the name. RIP Layne
Wow I remember when this came out....was going through a bad time in my life with drugs and alcohol...lots of bad memories but AIC was one of the things I had
I was in jail / probation at the time. I remember the damn cell bunk i was in when I first heard it on the little clear basic azz radio they give you😂 aic can get you thru anything
I was skeptical at first with Will , BUT after hearing the new CD and seeing them live a couple weeks ago there is know way they could have found a better front man , Thanks for bringing REAL music back to life guys ...
This is a great look into the making of this video. The guys personalities show through, such a great group of guys. And by the way Sean, the video doesn't suck.
Come on people, grow the fuck up. Layne is irreplaceable, but someones gotta do the job, and Will does it great. If you think about it, you guys are putting Layne in a place he never liked to be, in a GOD place (same as Kurt). He always said that he was a normal guy in a band, nothing special (obviously he is special for us), but is such a stupid thing to give up on AIC just because Layne is not in it. AIC is still THE BEST and if you people are REAL FANS, you should love them.
I think Layne had a sound, voice that was a very hard caliber to match. Obviously singers are harder to replace than a drummer or bass player, because their voice is what people connect with. Let's face the facts. I think people like Will, but it is ALWAYS hard to transition to another band member for fans. That is across the board for any band. Your point is valid on the don't put people on pedestals, but people do that especially more so when someone is now gone. We do it with Chris Cornell, Hendrix, Cobain, Morrison, Wood, Weiland, etc....Jerry, Sean and Mike are the band, without them there would be no AIC. Every band has a distinct sound. They were able to retain their's. I think the NUMBER 1 thing AIC did that keeps them relative is they keep it real, have humility, are funny, enjoy what they do and are down to earth. Nice to look at for us girls is never a bad thing either...evil laugh**** lol I think people can lay off on the I miss Layne shit, it's been 15 years. Everyone misses him, we get it. But life goes on and they have done a beautiful job of remembering him and Mike Starr. No one needs to make Will feel second hand on that shit. Will handles it well though, I think he knew that he would have to deal with a bit of comparison and whining. Sucks, but it happens.
i don't know if you play guitar..... i've been playing twenty four years. the reason jerry says he's getting blisters, is because of the way you have to play this opening riff, the 'seasick' riff.... it is absolutely hell on the index finger! but you are right: we should hope jerry has strong fingers by now... he will after playing this song every night on tour
If you listen to the Beatles Helter Skelter, at the end of the song, Ringo screams: "I got blisters in my fingers". I think he said it because it was a really hard song to play, at least it was when it was recorded.
totally agree, i saw them in LA last week. william really fits well. and he sounds a tad bit like layne without really trying. the band really works with him.
He doesn't have the grit that Layne did, that's what I meant. I agree Duvall doesn't either. Have you listened to any Comes with the Fall to hear what Duvall can/can't do? I'd put on some Fuel or CwtF for comparison, but I can't stop playing anything but AIC quite yet. When Cantrell did his solo stuff (3-piece and more), I wasn't expecting AIC minus Layne, b/c I think he writes differently, or just selects different types of songs to release, when he's solo.
@JFCantrell For such a great band I expected so much more. I work in the business and I know how this stuff works. Green screen if used creatively can be a fun tool. Overall there are so many more imaginative ways to make a video. Maybe I expect more for one of the greatest rock bands of all time (William Rocks BTW, I just had to get used to the change)
So...would you rather they had ended up with someone who sounded more like Layne or not reunited at all? Duvall won this fan-since-Facelift on the Velvet Revolver (who SUCKED) tour. He brought power to the vocals, but wasn't trying to be anyone but himself. It worked and, IMO, think it also works on the new album. And if everyone agreed about everything life would be boring! :)
@scottyxdont Emmm??? This bass line is not on the first fret of the E ... its on the 3rd ;) They changed it because it was to difficult...Obviously. And still it hurts!!! lol!
I agree with you to an extent bro but you also have to remember that every situation is different. It's easy to just call them all junkies but if you have ever dealt with a serious addiction you would know that it's not as black and white as that.
@bagumbax Fuckin' right! I them in T.O. a year or so ago and I thought the new guy did his best to sound like Layne on the old songs AND the new songs. He knows the shoes he needs to fill and does a pretty damn good job. It's the same ol's Roth/Hagar or Scott/Johnson debate, but fuck it all. It sucks that Layne is gone, but it's great to have AIC back kicking ass. Isn't it? This song rules btw!
ah, I just looked it up online and it turns out yu are right. I always thought it sounded like John's voice and so did quite a few other people apparently. Anyways, did you hear Alice in Chains is back with a new cd?
@JFCantrell I'll admit at first I I thought he was really talented but not the right guy, but I just had to get used to seeing someone totally different (style wise) - I'll also admit for some reason I was not expecting such great music. Most bands at this point in their careers put out garbage just so they can tour. Obviously not with this band!!
I've seen AIC 4 times and I'm 15 isn't that nice? I was suppose to go see them with layne when I was in 1st grade but my dad and I couldn't make it cause it was "To Late For A First Grader" according to my mom...so I got jacked fml
@jedsebastian ; Yea no kidding, Jed. I have been a fan since 1993. My point was they never had the popularity of a "Nickleback" but it seems that AIC is gaining momentum and could see the're popularity rise higher than is was in the 90's. You can stop laughing out loud now.
I love the song but the green screen stuff in the backgound looks like something a student that just discovered chroma key would do. THE SONG AND THE BAND ARE BOTH AWESOME!!!!!
Jerry Cantrell can't believe he's living in California? Look on the bright side Jerry. At least it's not Paris. What the hell is Chris Cornell doing in PARIS?
always had higher keys and more melody it's natural for guys not to have a lot of ranges guys don't have higher ranges usually, but can sing lower... jerry has always had a whiney vocals like layne but nowhere near the same range let alone the handful of octaves layne was able to sing.. i'm probably confusing the shit out of you with some boring music terms but you get the jist of it :) now try out scallions damnit! my laptop freaked out i meant to make a bigger post lol..
i'm not used to hearing alice in chains in a different key....lower keys too....he has the whiney vocals staley always had and i think just his lack of range doesn't fit in with AIC....in a regular rock band he would be okay, alice in chains has alway
@gibsongold1970 You're making too much out of Cliff Burton. His fingers weren't that strong and his sound wasn't very heavy. I'm definitely a fan of his and was going to see him but he was killed. I ended up seeing Jason Newkid two months later. John Entwistle definitely had strong fingers and a very heavy sound but you probably don't know who that is or care. I don't think Cliff would've appreciated so many of his fans bagging on bass guitarists who use a pick or making him out to be God.
fuck the grit.....cantrell is a good 2 octaves higher than that raspy son of a gun..check out degradation trip.. if there's more duvall on the next album, that isn't a good thing..try out brett..he's with a run down DOORS..or make it a 3 pieces with jerry doing guitar and lead vocals. as a musician i don't like him, he's an okay rhythm guitarist......if he just did rhythm i wouldn't notice one bit. layne would REALLY have made the chorus more melodic, and made the song in a higher key.......
It's so awesome to see these guys happy and enjoying making music again after all they've been through. Layne is watching and loving it from up there!
And mike
Layne was awesome. Irreplaceable. He's also gone. I LOVE old AIC but my God yall need to grow up. This "Will vs. Layne" or "Will sucks" or "this isn't AIC"..all childish. Hats off to Jerry for keeping it going. Children exit stage left and pop in a Winger CD.
LMFAO
Winger is an amazing band. Just download their cds, their musicianship was huge. I love grunge but a lot of 80s hard rock Is pretty awesome.
...listen to mike inez at 1:29, saying it's a real simple riff but it kills his fingers.... it involves bending the first string (the heaviest), at the first fret (right after the nut, and the most difficult place and string to bend on the fretboard) and even the most seasoned fingers get sore... it is a bit unusual.
but it sounds insane, and that's why we love jerry!!!
You find them socks yet Mike? Mike Inez Rocks !
OMG!!! How cute is Sean Kinney? And don't you just love Cantrell's reference to 'Helter Skelter'?
BEST BAND EVER
LOL "hopefully it doesnt SUCK." sean kinney is hilarious
hah Jerry "I got blisters on my fingers!"
first time i heard that line at the end of Helter Skelter i laughed so hard. and hearing jerry say it made me laugh haha....
WE NEED SOME SOCKS!!!!! HAHAHA !!!!! BEEEESSSSTTT
"I got blisters in my fingers" - The Beatles are sill alive!!
Great song and great new album for AIC... I have seen they in Milano on 2nd of December 2009... amazing live!!
@jakisidiota2
"I've got blisters on my fingers"
I had to look him up. Duh - Fuel's singer! Great pipes.

No, Jerry quoting Ringo exactly.
i heard the album..and there are songs..that i really..truly...believed that it was layne...he is a great add to make alice alive again...BORN AGAIN!
They completely destroyed at the Portland, OR show the other night. I'm so glad William doesn't try to sound like Layne, he's something different. We miss you Layne, and your legacy is being carried by the right guy.

this song is the best i have ever heard since 2000. thank God for AIC..
I can't say enough how FUCKING amazing the new cd is. William Duvall is an awesome addition. In the end I am glad they kept the band as AIC and did not change the name. RIP Layne
love it. Love THEM! Hope they do more of these behind the scenes vids!
Wow I remember when this came out....was going through a bad time in my life with drugs and alcohol...lots of bad memories but AIC was one of the things I had
I was in jail / probation at the time.

I was skeptical at first with Will , BUT after hearing the new CD and seeing them live a couple weeks ago there is know way they could have found a better front man , Thanks for bringing REAL music back to life guys ...
props to the director. he did a good job of capturing the feeling of the song.
This is a great look into the making of this video. The guys personalities show through, such a great group of guys. And by the way Sean, the video doesn't suck.
Come on people, grow the fuck up. Layne is irreplaceable, but someones gotta do the job, and Will does it great.

Well said.
they are so awesome - much respect for them bringing AIC back to their fans..

but you are right: we should hope jerry has strong fingers by now... he will after playing this song every night on tour
That's a cool perspective on making a video. Thanks for posting...
Right on dude. I'm behind you 100% on that.
LOL Jerry quoting the Beatles
If you listen to the Beatles Helter Skelter, at the end of the song, Ringo screams: "I got blisters in my fingers". I think he said it because it was a really hard song to play, at least it was when it was recorded.
totally agree, i saw them in LA last week. william really fits well. and he sounds a tad bit like layne without really trying. the band really works with him.
Great director's videos. Vive la France! Alice in Chains this new album is amazing.
Jerry Cantrell Rules and great vocals Duvall.
Alice in Chains Rock. I love the new Album!!!!!!!!!!
DANG. Still 13 years ago, man! 😱💋❤
@effjay4 lol nickelback was selling newspaper when aic became rockstars, they've been there done that dude lol
what an awesome song.

I agree 100%. Couldn't have said it better myself.
@JFCantrell

Overall there are so many more imaginative ways to make a video. Maybe I expect more for one of the greatest rock bands of all time (William Rocks BTW, I just had to get used to the change)
The next record by AIC is going to be a smash. Just wait and see, they are poised to be the biggest thing since Nickelback.
Awesome song!

@scottyxdont Emmm??? This bass line is not on the first fret of the E ... its on the 3rd ;) They changed it because it was to difficult...Obviously. And still it hurts!!! lol!
They have every right to continue, Jerry was chief songwritter anyway
I agree with you to an extent bro but you also have to remember that every situation is different. It's easy to just call them all junkies but if you have ever dealt with a serious addiction you would know that it's not as black and white as that.
@GodsmackLoverOracle We're gonna need some socks then! lol!
The new album is so fucking great. I love it.
4:08 I knew it. This guy is French lol
@bagumbax Fuckin' right! I them in T.O. a year or so ago and I thought the new guy did his best to sound like Layne on the old songs AND the new songs. Anyways, did you hear Alice in Chains is back with a new cd?
somebody needs to check the brains of TheGoldfinger71 and CaribbeanLounger.
3:04 .... I'm still laughing... kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
John to be more exact.
@bagumbax Couldnt agree more.
@effjay4
Yes it will be a smash, but may I point out that AIC had it goin' on wayy before Nickelback was even thought of. ;)
Ringo, to be exact.
I've seen AIC 4 times and I'm 15 isn't that nice?
I was suppose to go see them with layne when I was in 1st grade but my dad and I couldn't make it cause it was "To Late For A First Grader" according to my mom...so I got jacked fml
I hope by "deuche bag" you were refering to the Godsmack guy and not Layne...
@TiramisuHappy You have no fucking idea how epic that was...or maybe you do...
@jedsebastian ; Yea no kidding, Jed. I have been a fan since 1993. My point was they never had the popularity of a "Nickleback" but it seems that AIC is gaining momentum and could see the're popularity rise higher than is was in the 90's. You can stop laughing out loud now.
this was funny but mature kid!
@bagumbax Capital!!
What the hell is Chris Cornell doing in PARIS?
the 3rd response should have been the 1st. :)
weird riff....you mean AWESOME RIFF
did sean kinney have botox done or plastic surgery? Everything north of his nose looks funky. He looks like a wax caricature of himself.
aww, more green screens!? damnit i miss props!
Word
always had higher keys and more melody it's natural for guys not to have a lot of ranges guys don't have higher ranges usually, but can sing lower...
jerry has always had a whiney vocals like layne but nowhere near the same range let alone the handful of octaves layne was able to sing..
i'm probably confusing the shit out of you with some boring music terms but you get the jist of it :)
now try out scallions damnit!
my laptop freaked out i meant to make a bigger post lol..
The song with its riffs is awesome. The video is weird.
Oops- made my comment before checking out yours. My bad.
I miss layne so much
@TiramisuHappy Best youtube comment ever!
yeah, man...they got my hopes up when they were supposedly coming with faith no more...such a let down!
@awkando1 k
i'm not used to hearing alice in chains in a different key....lower keys too....he has the whiney vocals staley always had and i think just his lack of range doesn't fit in with AIC....in a regular rock band he would be okay, alice in chains has alway
duval has no range.
jerry should have made it a 3 piece....or better yet ask brett fucking scallions......
William is great...Layne who? HA
hahaha.
@gibsongold1970 You're making too much out of Cliff Burton. His fingers weren't that strong and his sound wasn't very heavy. I'm definitely a fan of his and was going to see him but he was killed. lol @ 0:14 - 0:16
No you aren't. Where's Layne? Oh right...
:cries:
fuck the grit.....cantrell is a good 2 octaves higher than that raspy son of a gun..check out degradation trip.. if there's more duvall on the next album, that isn't a good thing..try out brett..he's with a run down DOORS..or make it a 3 pieces with jerry doing guitar and lead vocals.
as a musician i don't like him, he's an okay rhythm guitarist......if he just did rhythm i wouldn't notice one bit.
layne would REALLY have made the chorus more melodic, and made the song in a higher key.......
...jerry looks like coppercab
If only you'd chose a better replacement. That Nigga belongs to Lenny Kravitz tribute band.
It kinda pisses me of that they continued the band after Laneys death
don't talk pls
