The thing that really struck me about this game when I first played it was that when I first killed someone, it felt like it had more weight to it than any other game I had ever played.
In most shooter games, each enemy is an easy kill, only finding strength in vast numbers. In Ready Or Not, you usually only come across one enemy at a time, and each of them have an equal capacity to kill you that you have to kill them, so shooting them feels like you just shot a real person. This is exemplified by the realistic sound of gunshots.

not just that, if your shot only injured them, you can hear them clutching their wounds and moaning in pain

@@sewerwaluigi yea personally I think they should've been more considerate of the date they chose, whether it was an unfortunate concidence or not. Apparently when the game was removed off of Steam shortly after the release of the level, it was due to a copyright/trademark issue with the actual Pryzm club in real life issuing a copyright complaint to VOID or something, rather than the release date being the anniversary of the shooting being the reason for the removal. Personally I think VOID should've addressed any concerns about the level's release date and issued condolences to victims and survivors of the shooting for any distressed caused by the level's release date correlating with the anniversary of the shooting, which they (partially) did.
I remember seeing a comment under a gameplay video of the level from a person whose friend died in the shooting, saying how the entire level brought back bad memories of the shooting and was quite difficult to play due to the level reminding them of what happened that night. They weren't criticizing VOID or the inclusion of the level but rather they were offering their own take on what they thought of the level

And Assault Police squads are still Police AKA Civilian not military and as such are not trained to "eliminate a threat in a hostile environment" nor are they trained in battlefield tactics , the environment they operate in is VASTLY different from that that any military or paramilitary group operate in.
They usually operate in areas where innocent bystanders are present and where the use of lethal force it the very last thing that they want as every bullet fired could mean an innocent person being injured or killed , the ultimate goal is usually to apprehend the suspects and minimize injury and loss of life. And a dead suspect in say a kidnapping case could mean the missing person is never found and could die a terrible death locked up somewhere.
RoN actually makes you feel this where you score better when the outcome resulted in the least injury and death possible and where going in guns blazing is the very last thing you want to do and the game harshly punishes you for trying that.

The mods for this game is really immersive, like the Patrol Officer mod, only allowed to have Glocks or SIGs as your primary and one guy with a shotgun or a M4 platform rifle, pepper spray for non-lethal, no helmets, some kind of body armour, no NVGs, no flashbangs, no door wedges, no door/snake camera, no lockpicks

Thank you, that's pretty high praise.
The bits on the TV and the hostage clips were ripped straight from a few trailers. I stitched a few up bits of the trailers and reordered them, added my own clips and some sound editing to it to give it that extra touch.

@@rogoo pretty high praise for pretty damn good work. It's the kind of stuff I'd expect from a team of cinematographers taking a few weeks and a budget of at least 7 figures. I didn't know any of it was actually taken from trailers, but you did a very good job putting them together in a very moving and sophisticated way.

My favourite bit about this game is the lobby, the lobby music gives that feeling of the "Calm before the storm". It's so tranquil, yet so daunting when the music dips, as if it foreshadows the hell your character has both been in, and expects.

What I think makes ready or not a horror game scarier than the mainstream ones, is that it is real. A common border point that horror games reach in their “scary” level is the unrealistic monsters/demons whatever. Ready or not is able to cross this line, as they cover REAL situations that aren’t fantasy. There’s no crazy demonic monster or hidden ghost following you, you’re facing PEOPLE.

I must say, RoN does not beat around the bush. It's clear that they wanted to show the corruption and downright evil that Los Suenos is consumed by, and the devs don't hold back in showing it. Visual storytelling also plays a huge role in this. I don't know, but just finding out the current situation by yourself makes the perception of the crimes shown somehow even worse and even more vile

When this game first hit my radar back in 2021, I was two weeks fresh off my FTO phase for Atlanta police, and had a handful of calls that were interesting, but not intense. As time went on, I kind of forgot about the game, and about a week ago one of my buddies on steam convinced me to hop back on the game. It had been just under two years since I had last played, so I didn’t know what to expect. After letting him select a map (Neon Tomb) and playing it for about 10 minutes I had to step away from my computer and take a breath of fresh air to center myself.
To say that this game draws parallels to real life is an understatement. I can already tell the dev team must have some form of police/law enforcement with personal experience on their teams. The environments, the scenarios, even the minute details of an underfunded HQ and police department in an urban setting are spot on.
I wish I could play more with my friends, but my work life intrudes greatly with my personal enjoyment of the game. If it’s one thing I don’t want to be reminded of in my free time, it’s the monsters that people can make of themselves.

The atmosphere alone just makes you feel on edge like you are really there with your squad and there are true stakes.

Critical Nobody said something I found really poignant in his video about the game. When talking about the environmental storytelling and the gruesome details in this game, he says (paraphrasing) “The game doesn’t sugarcoat, and it also doesn’t glorify”. He then goes on to say “if a tac team has been called to raid a specific location, things have already gone wrong”. Being a part of the Special Forces or a counter-terrorist unit might be one of the most horrific jobs a person can undertake. Lot’s of people seeing these sorts of events through a screen in the safety of their homes can only get a vague sense of what it actually feels to be in situations like ones simulated in Ready or Not. If you’re not trained to handle those situations, it is likely that your ability to make rational decisions or even react within an ample amount of time will be greatly hampered. It’s scary. Really, really scary. I have immense respect for people who fight to keep their country safe, no matter what nation they belong to.

I'd like to point out an important observation:
A good number of maps that you used to illustrate your points were not made by the original devs and therefore might deviate a little from their original vision. I saw you briefly mentioned the mods, but the possible deviation is also an important factor.
The vision for the game seems clear, but it's in the details where we can be greatly surprised. The distinction is important.

First game I got on steam deck and the reason why I got one. I die…a lot considering the controls are gonna take work. However, it’s truly the most immersive game I’ve played and I have yet to have a game keep me on edge like this one. Not only that but the lore mixed with the atmosphere gives me chills. After playing the infamous Valley of The Dolls map I had to take a break. This wasn’t some fictional scenario but, it was something that really happens. It really shows the real life monsters in the world. This may not mean anything but an big thing I appreciate is the fact you have diverse characters. In the military I made so many friends so it kinda hit home for me actually bonding and caring about AI characters or if I’m lucky enough real world players. I was never sheltered. I’m 32, a heavy gamer since 5 and seen a lot of terrible things and been in deployments so the fact this game made me feel so many emotions and look at everyone differently even more says so much. I truly hope this is not a game that’s abandoned. I support this game so much and it’s truly an amazing horror game.

Shanye, Please Shut Up has been doing a fantastic job deocumenting the lore of Ready or Not, and after watching those, you'll find we've only scratched the surface here.
The Los Suenos Police Department is understaffed and underfunded. Your own precinct hasn't seen an overhaul or proper maintenance in so long that basically every contractor in the city won't touch it. A ticking time-bomb more or less. What little funding you do have is being directed towards weapons and equipment, and public opinion isn't exactly on your side.
An ongoing sanitation worker strike has seen garbage pile up all over the city to the point of overflowing, adding to that feeling of decay and hopelessness.
Budget cuts to Veterans' Affairs has seen a disgruntled group of disabled veterans take up arms and attempt to murder a senator.
And of course, climate change being a driving factor in one of LS' worst droughts on record.
And thats not even all. Ready or Not's world is beautifully bleak. You're trapped in a city on the brink with only the bare minimum to do your job. You're not a hero that's going to save the day; all you can do is try to restore a little order for just one more day.

The scribbled drawings of monsters on the meth lab walls were so damn creepy. And the piles of bodies in the club made me literally stop and stare for a moment as I realized just how fucked the world of Ready Or Not is. And of course the other levels with the pedos were terrible too. Made me almost ignore ROE just to get revenge on the bastards. But the game was really able to make me stop and think. I wondered how such large scale atrocities were able to go on for so long, how no one was able to stop them earlier, and how I wasn't there to prevent it, just stop it from spreading further, and clean up the mess.

The game's more iconic missions are all based on true events. The nightclub was based on the pulse nightclub shooting. The cabin in the woods takes inspiration from ruby ridge and the unibomber. The voll-heath mission is based on Epstein's island. I've had multiple discussions with friends about this game were they said something along the lines of "X seems a little unrealistic", completely unaware just how grounded in reality the ENTIRE game is.

Once we realized what was going on in Doll House... let's just say when we went to check on the guys we arrested, they had all mysteriously died.

The lack of an openly presented story also adds to this. You get a slight briefing of the situation before a mission and thats it outside of the mission environment. There a so many things scattered around that you just stumble into that it forces you to think and match the pieces. We naturally fear what we dont know, and in RoN's case what we learn isnt much better. It just feels real with all the horrors we see. Most of the time we arent just fighting generic enemy #7 or comically evil villains but actual people, with their attrocities being based on actual reality. And if you slow down to think about all those, you just get overwhelmed by how futile your efforts are with every day being worse than the last in los suenos.
And then there is also the occasional jumpscare in the vineyards tunnels
