  • Today, we are at Hyundai Namyang R&D center to show you and to drive the World’s 1st mass production Hydrogen Fuel Cell Truck; a new Hyundai Truck called Xcient. This Fuel Cell Truck has two stacks from Hyundai Nexo and has an electric motor producing 350kW of output. I have driven new cars powered by Fuel Cell, but not a truck. So, today, we will show you how this new Hyundai truck feels powered by a fuel cell and how it is different compared to diesel-powered trucks.

With its complete departure from an internal combustion motor that is the information most people want. Not that it drives like a truck has a horn and lights. But the true and full function of the non similarity of the drive train and power sorce.

It is easy to build hydrogen trucks. They have been on the road for many years. It is impossible to sell a hydrogen truck as it will always cost 3x per mile to run than a battery powered truck. Kenworth / Toyota has been demonstrating a class 8 truck since 2017. The California port of LA recently abandon using a small fleet of hydrogen powered trucks. There is no explanation why they stopped driving them after only two years. There is also no mention of the cost to drive the trucks.

The cumulative "Zamboni" issue is not talked about if millions of Passenger and Commercial Hydrogen Vehicles Fuel Cell's labor on roads as a collective during below freezing temperature Seasons spewing water. I just can't wait for below freezing winter driving, as often found World wide, and here in the States where millions of Vehicles move about, when in a fully built out Hydrogen Future Energy Society where countless hydrogen vehicles have driven before us spewing mostly cool liquid state water exhaust droplets from a hydrogen fuel cell's 60-80C/140-176F exothermic reaction coating the roads with "black ice" for us to drive over and wreck our vehicles on !

@Asian Petrolhead well I hope for the best, meaning no "black ice" to slide on. We seem to agree that time will tell that if transportation is dominated by millions of Hydrogen fueled vehicles when water is the sole by-product dropped or misted continuously by a majority of vehicles on to below freezing road surfaces that icy driving conditions could be an unwanted result. Time will tell us all if an unintended traction hazards develop. Stay Well. Stay Safe. Stay Happy.

Hi Zaid. Thank you for enjoying the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Truck review.

So the hydrogen is produced from electricity (it wouldn't be zero emissions otherwise) then the truck turns the hydrogen back into electricity to power the motors.
I wonder how much energy is lost in this total process....

It takes about 3x as much electricity to run a green hydrogen powered vehicle as a battery vehicle. BEV is vastly more efficient and much cheaper to run, but hydrogen has the advantage of low weight and fast refuelling times. It only makes sense to use hydrogen either when you really really need fast refuelling times because you are moving constantly, or when you need to drive a very long way where recharging is not possible. In cold climates like Canada batteries struggle so there might be more need there. In general people like the convenience of fast refuelling fossil fuels but when they realise how much cheaper it will be to run a battery vehicle they must just learn to factor in the recharging time into their schedules for most tasks.

I need to make some time to learn more why they don't make all cars on hydrogen?!Is it just because of money/economics?As far as I see we will not end the fossil type engines any time soon since most of the car manufacturerers didn't sign the green petition.China being one of the most polluted region in the world didn't sign the petition as far as I know.I don't understand what is in the head of this people. Are they so addicted about their games because it is addiction in the purest sens like casino, drugs or games addiction.

Hi S. It's probably both! Charging station and the cost. But for commercial vehicles, i think the Hydrogen fuel cell looks very promising. Thank you for enjoying the hydrogen fuel cell review from Hyundai.

Does anyone remember the Hindenberg? Trading lithium batteries for hydrogen fuels cells may be more efficent. But you still have idiot drivers on the road. What guarantee is there that they won't explode or burst into flames when the get T-boned. The driver will be toast.
