I find it interesting that white students having to hear "I'm better than you because I'm black," is presented as a rhetorical tool to stimulate discussion, when it is literally built into the curriculum of the public school I work at, and they have to hear it every day.
Jane Elliot would have done much better at achieving her ultimate goal, using psychological tactics that would have stimulated the subconscious impulses that we all share, in reference to racism, systematic oppression, and pure hatred. The reactions of her subjects were immediate and totally voluntary. This instructor had to lead his subjects, because he failed to stimulate their suppressed subconscious in a way that would produce their natural reactions to this failed exercise. It was awkward to watch. The conclusion was incomplete, which left a lot to be desired.

My undergrad major was sociology so this video was right smack-dab in the middle of my passion. For me to challenge is not this amazing Professor who is trying to stretch the minds of his students but it is the lack of Engagement and real in depth introspect that disappoints. I could sit in this professor's class for hours.... I'm going to review some other videos and I hope that the thinking of these freshmen in this intro class starts to develop and they really start to delve deep because this is good stuff!

As a college professor at another large State institution I find this particular lecture to be disturbing on multiple levels. I get with the instructors trying to do but I wouldn't use certain references like dog, dude, and so forth to talk to these students and I wouldn't ask them questions that really make them uncomfortable because it's pretty obvious that that's what the questions are designed to do. Maybe you think I'm being too hard on the guy but I have 24 years teaching experience at over five institutions and I just am really careful to be respectful of students and not put them in awkward uncomfortable positions just to make a point. And I think you could have accomplished that without separating for different students and asking them to reverse races just to make a point. I think in fact if anything it made the demonstration worse. Sorry to the instructor I'm sure he means well he seems to be a guy really cares about a student's and that from that point on he's cool but the delivery could use some work.

I understand that you've been teaching for 24yrs but I respectfully disagree. When it comes to understanding how another person/people feels, what their outlook is, it's sometimes good to try and create a scenario where you switch roles to see things from the other side. This is a method that counselors even use when they work with people in a troubled relationship. I believe it was a good approach.
I would like to respectfully disagree with you on so many levels but I will only address one. For years, blacks have had to live a life of dealing with white discomfort. Redlining, racist banking, history books, PWI vs HBCU, etc. These are some things we felt as a race. This is a class which they are playing roles. Maybe their discomfort is something they need to feel in order to move the needle forward to address these issues on a larger scale. Whites need to address these issues at the same rate as blacks in order to shift the power paradigm.

The attitude of this professor and some of the comments here are exactly why we have a racial problem. It has nothing to do with inherent systemic racism or unconscious bias. It has everything to do with people thinking that they're justified in labeling and blaming other races for the problems they have today, because of things that some members of that race did 100 or 200 years ago. When you project resentment and bigotry on other people, you create the very thing you claim to be against.

It had one, barring black children from attending public schools, established in 1869, but was repealed in 1872.
The lack of knowledge and participation from the students and guest is driving me nuts. I’m no historian but I would have aced this and I knew his approach to having them participate from the beginning. Cringing at these young black men who have a opportunity to be heard by MANY of the generation that’s up next!!! College was so enlightening for me in this way.

To me the most important part of this exercise is how he pointed out how black people in this country educate themselves on these issues and I still have to post the definition of the word Racism in almost every discussion on race. Because usually white people throw the word racism around and I have to give them the Oxford's definition. As a college professor at another large State institution I find this particular lecture to be disturbing on multiple levels. I get with the instructors trying to do but I wouldn't use certain references like dog, dude, and so forth to talk to these students and I wouldn't ask them questions that really make them uncomfortable because it's pretty obvious that that's what the questions are designed to do. Maybe you think I'm being too hard on the guy but I have 24 years teaching experience at over five institutions and I just am really careful to be respectful of students and not put them in awkward uncomfortable positions just to make a point. And I think you could have accomplished that without separating for different students and asking them to reverse races just to make a point. I think in fact if anything it made the demonstration worse. Sorry to the instructor I'm sure he means well he seems to be a guy really cares about a student's and that from that point on he's cool but the delivery could use some work.

I understand that you've been teaching for 24yrs but I respectfully disagree. When it comes to understanding how another person/people feels, what their outlook is, it's sometimes good to try and create a scenario where you switch roles to see things from the other side. This is a method that counselors even use when they work with people in a troubled relationship. I believe it was a good approach.
I would like to respectfully disagree with you on so many levels but I will only address one. For years, blacks have had to live a life of dealing with white discomfort. Redlining, racist banking, history books, PWI vs HBCU, etc. These are some things we felt as a race. This is a class which they are playing roles. Maybe their discomfort is something they need to feel in order to move the needle forward to address these issues on a larger scale. Whites need to address these issues at the same rate as blacks in order to shift the power paradigm.

The attitude of this professor and some of the comments here are exactly why we have a racial problem. It has nothing to do with inherent systemic racism or unconscious bias. It has everything to do with people thinking that they're justified in labeling and blaming other races for the problems they have today, because of things that some members of that race did 100 or 200 years ago. When you project resentment and bigotry on other people, you create the very thing you claim to be against.
