Your tyres sound like they are quite hard. 40psi ish. Have you tried lower pressures, especially if you run no-tubes. I'm 13stone and run at around 20-23psi. Loads more grip and smoother over that sort of terrain. Cheers
Great video Andy; there's so many legal trails on Helvellyn and all of them are cracking although they do range in difficulty somewhat. The first climb up Patterdale and Dollywaggon, that's the one I suggested to you as a descent. Dollywaggon beats you up but from the tarn down to Patterdale (past the climbers hut) is just sublime as a descent. Glad Ian is ok after that tumble, I reckon we've all crashed like that over the years where your front wheel gets caught on a rock and before you know it, you are cart-wheeling into a load of rocks.
Now I’ve seen it with my bike eyes on I would love to do that descent. And I have a much more capable descending bike now. Think I’ll be doing all combinations of helvellyn . I like the look of birk side as an out and back ride. May do that one next/soon
@@TrailFinder Birk Side is lovely but it does have one seriously steep rocky section and a lot of the dreaded paving on it. One I have done is up Keppel Cove, down Birk Side, up to Grisedale Tarn (via Great Tongue) and then finish with the trail down to Patterdale. Bloody awesome but a fair amount of effort 👍
Great video. Lower Man and Sticks Pass brings back some memories and reminds me I'll have to get up there again next year. If you like the rocky part of Sticks then you'll love the Rangers off Snowdon.
@@TrailFinder The ride/push up can be busy but the Rangers is usually pretty quiet in the week. There's also the option of a dawn raid or late evening ride at when the summer days are longest.
Great video & great effort mate. One of my local rides & you definitely went up Helvellyn the hardest way :) The hut you passed belongs to the company I work for & is dedicated to 2 of our instructors who died on Mt Cook in New Zealand, good place to spend the night.
Some good riding there, you know it's gnarly and loose simply by the sounds of the tires on the stones and the grunts and groans 😉 great video, really enjoyed it, glad your buddy was ok, the fall gave some perspective as his bike rolled down on his head 😱 keep em coming. Life is a journey, enjoy the ride 😎
Great ride mate.. as usual camera didnt show how steep and gnarly some of that is .. saw Ian's crash on his channel cant have been easy doing sticks after that tumble ... 👍
Thanks mate. Unfortunately the camera never does. Was a great ride. My kind of tech. Will be doing it in every combination I can think of. Prob birk side next
Very well ridden mate. Brings back such happy memories of my ride in September. The GoPro does not do the descent justice. Whatever your're seeing on camera is at least 5-10 times stepper in real life and those rocks are big and sharp!! We did the same descent but did a slightly different way up due to one of the lads not really wanting to hike a bike an e-bike. Enjoyed every minute of the video, made even more enjoyable after having ridden it!! QUALITY :-)
Those crashes are the worst, just come out of nowhere glad he is ok though 👍🏼 Stunning ride, know Jason wants to take us up there. Problem is we have come to learn what he likes riding now 🤣😭 Great video as always, and a pleasure to watch, cannot say that about many channels now on TH-cam 👍🏼
Thanks mate. Very kind words. You would love this mountain. So if you get the chance to do it. Do it. If you do it with Jason you will be descending the bit I hike a biked 😂. Ian was off the bike for 5 weeks after this crash. Soon as we finished and got back to the cars. That’s when the pain kicked in for him.
If you ride Helvellyn again I highly recommend climbing up the bridleway from Glenridding up to Cairn and descending down Dollywaggon Pike (the part you hike a biked).
My advice would be to start at sedbergh. Soon as you get to bowderdale (at the end of the fantastic single track) come back. And do it as an out an back. The second half of the loop is very disappointing. I’m doing it agin like that.
@@TrailFinder I do quite the look of the singletrack at the end of the video though. I'll skip those 2 bridleways through the fields and just ride the road instead.
Bloody hell that was a super gnarley ride, am I right in saying that you made this video a while ago Andy, it’s dry that’s why I ask, great video mate, the decent down sticks pass looked wicked, made me cringe when Ian crashed on those rocks
I do enjoy your videos, you know? There’s just summat about them, I’m always happy when I see a new one. Tha’ an inspiration lad. Not in an emotional gooey kin x-factor way, in a “just get on your bike & ride, there’s fun everywhere “ kinda way Maybe one day you’ll pass me, I should recognise your bike....I”ll gasp hello 👍🏻
Fantastic mate, i wondered if you had done this one, we did it the opposite way round down dollywaggon, this way looks just as insane, nasty looking crash by ian, glad he was ok, great ride, glad i found this one 👍
This way is the easy way around biking wise. Nothing to techie. The way you did it is the touch way. You did great riding down dolly wagon . After my recent trip to the lakes I’ve deciding to transition back to flats. As I’m chickening out of technical sections due to been attached to the bike. I saw your video of you going back to flats. How are you finding them now. I went out for the 1st time yesterday and found it tough. Picked up a lot of bad habits with the clips. Main one is picking up the rear wheel with the clips. Yesterday my feet just kept coming off the pedal. Are you and the bike as one now?
@@TrailFinder yes, it took a few weeks to get used to them, I was lifting my feet off the pedals a lot on climbs too haha, drops were the difficult one as you don’t want to be doing that, remember to keep your heals down and you should be fine, only took a few rides to adapt to be fair but technical sections are a lot easier since I changed back, you won’t regret it.
Nice vid 👍, don't think I would chose the Dollywagon hike a bike, but lower man, raise and Sticks are do worth it. I'm not so keen on the last section, it was covered in baby heads last time. 👍
seeing your riding buddy fall at 8.50 watching the bike roll onto his head makes me glad i wear my full face on these trails. the hike a bike part, would you advice against trying with an e-bike of 23kg. it`s those parts that put me off this ride, but defo one for me to try. love lakes nantural stuff.
@@AndyPhillipWoodturning as with whiteside its ridable to you come to a very sharp right hander which then kicks up and its a bit of a push not for long though then ride on to lower man and push again FYI its a great route coming back down the same way its fast n loose great fun.
Your bloody mad, I think I will stick to my road bike. A great video I can’t believe that your bikes take all that. Stay safe and keep enjoying it all.
Thanks David. I think you roadies are mad sharing the road with all those scary car drivers. Scares the hell out of me when I have to do a busy road section between trails 😂 yeah these modern mountain bikes are unbelievable the way they charge through the rough stuff. My new bike is even better at it than this bike.
In your opinion, which is better 4 passes or halvelln? I want to tackle the lakes on my own this year. It's a 4 and half hour drive, so i want to pick the best route.
4 passes. But it is a huge ride. Effort wise. And no escape routes once you commit. But it is amazing! And soon as weather improves I’ll be hitting it again
