9/8 is basically like a waltz in compound time though. It's in the same family as 3/8, 6/8 and 12/8. Functionally I wouldn't consider it an odd time unless you're grouping it in 4+5 or 2+2+2+3 or something.

I've come to approach odd meters the same way, I just find the pocket and go from there....works every time.
When he started tapping his foot it took me a good while to realize it wasn't a metronome.
