Simon Phillips - drumsolo - Clinic Tour Netherlands April May 2014 -

    Saw him with Jeff Beck for the "There and back " tour in Dallas,Tx. Incredible solo for that concert. Was taking drum lessons at the time and thought that he was playing rudiments that I had never heard. My instructor said that Simon combined rudiments and played on a level unlike any other drummer. 36 years later and now I'm 56 I call Simons level another dimension

    It’s understandable that when you have studied and played so many different music styles, and you turn to blend all of them, this is the extraordinary outcome. Brilliant👌🏻

    Yes one of the great drummers to perform and a genuine guy at that. I know most have added comments about their skill level. One thing to keep in mind is that what time you invest into something, you'll see great reward from it. Drumming is an ever changing and evolving experience. If you always strive to learn a groove, fill's or sticking patterns you'll become a great drummer. There's only one Simon Phillips, you have an opportunity to be one of a kind as well !

    He seems to have eliminated all mechanical restrictions. Having trained to be as fluent left handed as right handed probably also gives a neurological advantage, I would think. He certainly seems in lock-step with his inner "clock", giving him machine-like precision. Everyone seems to find him a very likeable guy as well, and I guess I'd also have to go along with that.

    57 years old during this clinic and Simon hasn't lost a bit of his youthful energy..

    • @robertglenn5398
      @robertglenn5398 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Yeah, Simon still has the energy he had at 20. I've been drumming since age 12 but not even close to the degree of this guy. He's been busy since he started. I've found that playing drums is the best exercise concocted. Everything is working simultaneously and of course, the math required to be good keeps the mind sharp.

    • @robertglenn5398
      @robertglenn5398 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** You know, Todd's name does ring a bell but today, so many new younger guys have hit the scene, I have a hard time keeping up! It's so depressing at times getting old because half of my favorites are dead, including Buddy Rich and Jeff Porcaro. Porcaro had such a style on the high-hat, I still have yet to find anyone comparable. And Vinnie Colaiuta, thank God, he's alive still, continues to amaze me. Anyway, if this guy possesses the energy of Simon, I'll probably have to consider myself blown away. Thanks for the head's up. Gonna check him out.

      +robert glenn You neglected to mention Terry Bozzio Chester Thompson and Ginger Baker Phill Collins and the list goes on

    • @robertglenn5398
      @robertglenn5398 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Oh, man...if I was to name them all, we'd all fall asleep during a listing. Isn't Ginger Baker something else? Did you manage to catch the 60 Minutes segment on him some years back? His attitude and demeanor are those of a man who is very comfortable in his skin. Chester Thompson is Phil Collins' tour drummer, isn't he? Love his work on the live cut of "Domino."

    • @robertglenn5398
      @robertglenn5398 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I see we have a bit in common given we've both attended and thrilled from clinics. I've personally been with Carmine Appice, a $150 private session (arrogant as it gets, left an hour later rather humiliated) Jazz great, Dave Weckl and arena rocker, Kenny Aronoff. You couldn't be more on target with the assessment of Frank Zappa, a genuine classicist in rock robes. I viewed on You Tube one of his concerts with Bozio, he in nothing but a pair of shorts and the two created such a sublime symbiotic balance of improvisation. It's one of those rare moments when you are really hypnotized. Frank's work I can only describe as ethereal and what a loss to the world it was when he left us at only age 52.

    Any negative comments regarding Simon's solo here are from individuals who aren't fit to tie or shine this man's shoes. He is one of the best to ever sit behind a drum kit. He is in the class of Buddy Rich. Hell I don't know if Rich could play all of this solo. Just jaw dropping talent in every aspect of this musical masterpiece. I've played for 20 years and know how difficult it is to even get close to COPYING this which I know is on a different level altogether. I'm a huge Judas Priest fan and I would have loved to see what he would have done on tour with the mighty Priest and on subsequent albums. His playing is so tastefully done as evidenced by his work on Sin after Sin with Priest. What kills me is half the drummers out there can't even perform a good double stroke roll and get paid millions and live in shameless luxury and for what? Talentless hacks with overexagerated arm movements and stick twirls. Simon Phillips would destroy all of them in every arena literally.

    Check out Simon on the TOTO 35th Anniversary Tour video. Speaking as a Bass player, there is nothing better than playing with a great drummer.
