I first learned about Simon Phillips from Pete Townshend’s 80’s solo records. Then I saw his amazing playing on The Who’s 1989 Tour. I have since learned about his varied and amazing session career and is original work. He is such a master craftsmen and just a brilliant drummer. Simon Phillips is a master of music.

Have you watched the complete video? When it comes to discussion on the bass / kick drums you get to see the kit then! I guess it is Phantom Recordings video...so therefore their right to present it how they like...frustrating as that might be 🙂

Simon is such a perfectionist wether playing or recording. There is no detail he hasn't considered or overlooked. These are just a part of the foundation that make him the legend he is. Thanks for all the decades of incredible music.
Not only is he a highly talented and extremely musical drummer, he is also eloquent, very knowledgeable about the inner-workings of it all, and has a great speaking voice. Thanks for sharing this great video/session!

Definitely the most informative drum mic explanation video that I have seen. I saw a Simon Phillips - Sam Ash drum clinic in Long Island, NY decades ago (& saw him perform with Jeff Beck ... AMAZING!). That was informative too, but this is highly detailed.
If this whole drumming thing doesn't work out for Simon, he could easily have a career reading books on tape...Quite soothing:)

Brilliant drumming on Bernie Marsden's "Behind Blue Eyes". I like the little subtleties Simon Phillips injects into it.
I guess you tried to say Bernie Marsden's "Behind your dark eyes", instead of "Behind blue eyes" (The Who; Keith Moon).

I listened to it multiple times and I really wonder if it is only me that finds the unprocessed sound much better than the processed one? I feel like the input has a lot more dynamic range and the output sounds a little constrained, muffled. I guess his secret is that his drums already sing naturally without even having the need to undergo any processing. :) What a true master.

I'm pretty sure there is a mix-up with the audios at the end:
IN is most likely the processed sound as you can hear the compressor working, a lot of selective fresh treble frequencies not usually heard on any unprocessed mic signal and that wonderful Simon Philipps trademark transparent and rich sound, while the "OUT" sound seems uncompressed and flat, with the toms and snare sounding as they typically do before EQ, with their uncontrolled mids creating a bit more of a muddy, less transparent sound that I've never heard on a finished Simon Philipps mix. ;)

Great video! I've heard someone talk about the paint can trick before and I've actually tried it in a studio recording session once. It seems to work (albeit a subtle difference)! I'm just curious about the physics behind it.
The can filled with paint or sand mechanically absorbs a part of the sound waves/resonances inside of the kick drum, which generates a more controlled sound (that's how Simon would describe it) that is easier to record in the end.

Have you tried the "old" SM545 as a toppsnare mik? it´s a bit softer in it´s own sound compared to 57, (My opinion). What do you use for a "flat-hitting-drummer" on the under-skin on snare??

I totally agree about liking the SM57 better then the beta57. I really like the Beta-56's on Tom's, SM57 on Snare, Beta-52 on kick & SM81's for overheads. This guy's drum kit is way to big. It would be a nightmare having to record/mix it in the studio. Lol
the Sony mic for snare drum at Trident was a Sony C38B.. if somone wondered
I did wonder. All I know about Sony mics is that EMI sold off a shed load of them at the Abbey Road "Sale of the Century" around 1980/81. Mostly C37s if memory serves.

He completely forgot to describe the weave of the carpet beneath the kit. I'm very particular about the weave of my carpet. I also insist on carpets matching drapes.

My friend Simon i had a red Tama swingstar with cymbals all the series2001 by paiste.the only thing i had change was snare.of course i didn't have so many pieces just the basic but still sound was extraordinary.please tell me this monster made you alone?thank you.

Hello sir, I saw you drumming for the who in 1988 during their Tommy 25th Anniversary Tour. You were great.
I read somewhere back in the 80's that you were regarded as the most prepared studio drummer in the business because all your drums had small clip- on-mikes that you left on permanently, thereby being no need for.any engineer (studio or live) to mike up your drum kit. I gather from this video that you've changed your mike setup. Sir, assuming the story I read was true, why did you get rid of your permanent clip-on mike setup?

Ben listening to Simon Phillips for ages. Saw him at a clinic probably about 30 years ago. Great player, and some some iconic tracks. Still find it difficult to listen to how he gradually gets more 'American' in the way he talks - kind of drumming Lewis Hamilton. But what a player!

I really think it is quite amazing that professional audio engineers demo equipment without loudness matching. Surely Elysia are marketing towards pro audio technicians, and believe me, I wont trust anything that is not loudness matched!

I thought best was one mic on the front, 2 at handlevel on the sides facing towards the drums and 2 overheads for stereo.
I really hope he's using noise gates on the kicks, Snare & Tom's. It would be a bloody mess literally without them.

I remember having a speaker wired up in reverse as a kick drum mic when I did a recording session.
To capture the kick’s room sound and low end,oops just noticed he has one also.
