Dr. David Unwin - 'Are we blaming salt for what the sugar did? An old fashioned detective story'

  • Dr. David Unwin is GP based in Southport in the United Kingdom. After over 25 years of attempting to treat diabetes by conventional methods, Dr. Unwin was introduced to low carb nutrition through one of his patients and the website www.diabetes.co.uk
From this revelation, Dr. Unwin now ignores official advice and treats his patients with a low-carbohydrate diet. Since adopting the approach, his practice now spends £50,000 less each year on drugs for diabetes than is average for his area.
Dr. Unwin is the RCGP National Champion for Collaborative Care and Support Planning in Obesity & Diabetes, as well as a Clinical Expert in diabetes. In 2015 he won the North West NHS ‘Innovator of the Year Award’ and in 2016 he won the National NHS 'Innovator of the Year Award' for his work in treating diabetes with a low carbohydrate approach.

I would, respectfully, add - As long as the empathy and caring compels one to search out the truth, embrace it and then pass it along to their patients. This is probably what you were as well conveying. Empathetic and caring people/doctors/nurse practitioners etc. are a dime a dozen. To find someone willing to stand for empirical evidence as opposed to the indoctrination from 'big pharma' seems nowadays, a rarity.

Thank you for your presentation. I am 45 and I went low carb at the start of 2022. I cut out 95% of sugar, rice, grains, etc. I also cut out the vast majority of processed food and seed oils. I can honestly say that I feel like a new man 10 months later. I regularly work out and have lost nearly 40 pounds. While I hate to sound vain, I have to admit for the first time in my life I visited a beach without feeling self-conscious about my body. I wish I had made this change 20 years ago.

Yes. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure 20 years ago and told to watch my salt intake. At the time I was eating tons of carbs and especially sugar and when I ate salty food my blood pressure would go higher. Now that I stopped eating carbs I eat a lot of salt and my blood pressure does not go up. I learned this very early in my keto/carnivore journey. In fact if I don't consume large amounts of salt I get muscle cramps in my legs at night while sleeping.

I'm 56, and have kept myself in reasonably good shape my whole life. I ate to the best of my knowledge, a mix of mostly carbs, lean meats and lots of veggies. I watched my sodium intake carefully for decades. I also am very active, lots of exercise and recreation, never have ben overweight. I thought I was doing well, but my BP was always borderline, 120-130/70-80. I thought for all my efforts, it should be better. A year ago, I discovered low carb diets and intermittent fasting. I cannot believe the difference in my energy and fitness. I also learned the all cause mortality vs sodium decreases with increasing intake, to a point. I decided to not restrict sodium, but greatly reduce carbs. I have tracked my BP at home and it has dropped over the year to 110/65. Seems to have plateaued there. I have noticed that my leg cramps that plagued me my whole life have quietly disappeared.

After all, before my prediabetes dx, I used to eat up to 2 or 3 in a day because work forced me to skip meals, and bananas were my on-the-go practical solution. I thought cutting refined, simple sugars were my moderate approach to controlling my diabetic genes. Fast forward, one year from my dx, on a low carb, two meals a day, higher fat, and exercise, I reversed prediabetes, and I will continue to be careful with what I put in my mouth. I still enjoy 1/2 of a banana every now and then.

When your only tool is a hammer, then every problem looks like driving a nail. Doctors are medicine dispensers and the result is polypharmacy where the patient is loaded with a series of medications prescribed for the side effects produced by all of them. This is medical malpractice and it shows that doctors are not properly trained to do their jobs. The active resistance to low carb diets cannot be excused since these opinionated individuals have no qualifications to pronounce on the subject and are merely parroting what their pharmaceutical sponsors are pushing. Do not take diet advice from your doctor and do not accept some pharmaceutical they are trying to push on you. This is particularly true of statins. LDL oxidation is a glucose load problem. It is not the result of eating saturated animal fats.

I wish this low carb information would get through to the dieticians and meal offerings at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge. A couple of months ago I was admitted to the Cardiology Ward to have an Atrial Flutter, leg pains and sky-high blood pressure investigated. I have T2 Diabetes and have been trying to follow a Low Carb diet (not always strictly) so I have got used to not having pasta, rice, bread, cereals, starchy veg & most fruits. The meal offerings while I was in hospital were completey appalling! The only breakfast choices were Cereal or Toast!!! Not even an Egg! Lunches were stodgy and very salty pasta dishes or tiny portions of meat/fish with potatoes and they only ever seemed to have peas or baked beans (Which I hate and make me vomit!) no other vegetable, let alone a leafy green, was ever available. Supper was even worse, usually consisting of sandwiches! No wonder my blood glucose level went up while I was there. Even though I was eating very little of what was on offer.
To try and help my low carb and weight loss efforts, I had taken up intermittent fasting but in the 5 days I was in there and unable to eat the food on offer, I lost 2Kg!!! Utterly ridiculous! Luckily, this has stayed off since I've been home. I was supposed to get vascular scans while there but because of an admin error and no one to take me down to the scanning suite during the allocated time slot, I missed my chance. So I got discharged with a great big bag of drugs (because they still haven't provided a proper diagnosis) and put on a waiting list for the scans. There is no telling when I'll get the scans. I have continued with my Low carb efforts and have been taken off one of the three Blood Pressure Tablets because I went too low. I still have leg pains and trouble walking.
This talk has encouraged me to redouble my efforts on low carbing and to be much, much, stricter. It would be even more encouraging if the main stream Hospital Doctors, Consultants and nurses didn't regard their patients as aliens from another planet when requesting Low carb meals as an option. They have vegan, nut allergy, & Halal options but no Low Carb options. It is disgraceful. Please keep up the good work on educating the rest of the medical profession. It is my fervent hope that Low Carb diets will become the norm instead of the killer low-fat, chemical ridden, high starchy carb diets that currently prevails everywhere.

I think it’s more about big pharma colluding with government than capitalism. Corruption takes over all economic systems. We the people just stopped caring and now we can’t hold anyone accountable, because our systems and laws are designed to prop up the corrupt. Best thing we can do is give them the middle finger, by teaching people to get healthy from food… until the gov ban the healthy food, that is.

We are not a capitalist healthcare system. The government allows monopolies in drugs, drug approval is nationalized, over a third if our Healthcare dollars are Medicare alone. There is no competition. We just stand out because our system has a mixture and 51 subsidiary systems that don't transliterated so it is confusing.
But you are right, no one gets paid to de prescribe. Direct primary care- a non insurance free market model of primary care, makes it more profitable to reduce drugs.

    OMG.
I’m having a nightmare with my daughters dietician currently.
I’m a paediatric nurse with general, emergency and neonatal experience.
My daughter was exprem and has CF.
I’ve seen the benefits myself of going low starch/carb high animal fats and intermittent fasting.
I’ve lost over 30kg since I start this journey in July 2021- so I experimented on myself basically.
My daughter- has cystic fibrosis and genetic disease that effect most of the organs but specifically the lungs and digestive system due to the mal-distribution of sodium.
Her dietary are obsessed with her gaining weight even though she’s a happy active intelligent little girl.
Shes never been hospitalised or even needed antibiotics for her chest since we started at low carb high animal fat (ketogenic diet) and yes her weight gain has been slow but her respiratory function when she’s on a ketogenic diet is so good I would wager that she doesn’t need her respiratory medications.
We also know that the ketogenic diet was originally developed to help children control epilepsy and saw a reduction in children suffering epileptic fits some even able to come of medication- we also know that it’s now being used to research dementia, Parkinson’s and MND due to its ability to protect the brains neurones.
My daughter is also predisposed to develop type 2 diabetes and cf related arthritis- impart I believe to this drive to feed these children up.
She has minimal starchy refined carbs- when she does she shows signs of respiratory distress (different to anaphylaxis) but wheezing, coughing and unsettled sleep- she’s 2 and she will ask for her chest physio if she’s eating something high carb because she knows it’s makes her feel better she also knows it’s food she’s eaten that’s sparked a respiratory event. But Becuase of her weight the team want me too increase her carbohydrates load by 150% despite the fact I know sugars from refined carbohydrates make her sicker, respiratory wise, digestive distress also becomes an issue and she lacks any motivation or energy to complete her daily activities.
I think the rhetoric needs to change in both adults and children. I’m actually Afraid I’m going to be accused of neglect if I keep feeding her the way I am even though I have video evidence to that’s shows a significant difference in her from a high starch refined carbs diet vs a more keto-esque style diet.
    Any advice appreciated.

@@kikiandco1899 I’m trying my best but as of today they a want to admit us for a 2 week hospital stay to observe my interactions with her and what exactly I feed her on. They also want to stick her like a pin cushion.
I’ve voice that I feel this is unnecessary and puts her at further risk- but they have said her growth is faltering and that’s not ok.
They also said that even if there was “evidence” that carbohydrates caused inflammation they still wouldn’t recommend cutting carbohydrates out as it’s “essential” to the diet.
I spoke them through gloconeogenisis and they didn’t seem to understand it at all-
They just kept in implying gluconeongenisis happens when glucose is obtained trough the diet 🤦‍♀️.
They kinda ended up back peddling a little on some
Of there comments- but I can’t tell they don’t have a clue- why would I want to have her admitted under such a clueless team.

I’ve been told I’m not allowed to bring any food in for her whatsoever she’s got to be on the kids hospital menu.
I’ve explained her digestive issue have only exacerbated due to the changes they have already tried- they offer movicol (laxative treatment) to help solve the bloating they’ve created with their dietary changes.
I’ve refused- becuase it was never a problem prior to dietary changes- and to what end? I lifetime of stool softeners becuase they want her to has “simple sugars” & “essential refined carbohydrates”

How does an gasoline engine become intolerant of gasoline?
Is it too much gasoline? Or are you replacing the components with shitty parts and adding sludgy, tar, corrosive oil?
We make our cells out of rancid, oxidized, seed oils/linoleic acid and we wonder why the cells and mitochondria disfunction. Why would a cell with membranes made of highly reactive pufa function properly? It's like building an engine block out of combustible wood.
So yeah, don't build a shitty wooden engine with sludgy oil and feed it gasoline. And don't feed a 20% linoleic acid human carbohydrates.

It could be that normalizing one’s insulin resistance and sugar intake won’t help Type One. I think type one is when the pancreas just does not produce insulin. So even sensitizing one’s cells to accept and use insulin won’t help if the body is not producing the insulin.

      Don't bother with the Doc.
You can get the help you need with channels like this.
If you fix the problem on your own, go to the doc and show your progress, he MAY say I don't know what you're doing, but keep doing it. Or 50% chance he'll say ... it worked for a while but BE CAREFUL, don't continue. And you just let it go in one ear and out the other.
All I found out about carbs and insulin I learned on my own from books and the experts publishing on youtube. Dr tried to put me on high BP meds... it lasted one month. I had too many episodes of low BP and took myself off. And I have my own BP cuff at home to monitor. Because you know when you go into the dr office it's ALWAYS high. I always make them take it twice, at the beginning and at the end of the appt and use the 2nd number.
For background. All 6 members in my family are diabetic, 4 T2s and 2 T1s. 4 are dead, 3 by diabetes. I am the youngest and in much better health than anyone else in my family at this age (58) and I've had T1 since I was 12. No eye trouble, no kidney trouble, no high bp, no neuropathy, no heart trouble. I only take insulin with a pump and metformin as I'm overweight and have insulin resistance. Doing very low carb but missing the activity part.... life is busy, I live in the desert, and I've never been very athletic, just excuses, I know.
MAINSTREAM MEDICAL IN CAHOOTS WITH BIG PHARMA ARE OUT TO HAVE PERPETUAL PATIENTS THAT THEY EVENTUALLY KILL.

salt raises the osmolarity of the blood which engages the polyol/sorbitol pathway that basically means it converts glucose to fructose and what damage fructose does i dont have to tell ya right? well that doesnt mean that salt is bad but it means that you have to drink enough to keep you blood sodium levels normal and have a normal osmolarity so the more salt you eat the more you should drink its really more about the salt in your blood than the salt that you eat
