CYCLING 100 MILES IN THE FLORIDA KEYS | Key West Century Ride

  • In early November, as Hurricane Nicole narrowed in on South Florida, four friends and I cycled 100 miles from Key West to Key Largo. More specifically, we biked to Tavernier (where we were staying). After last years North Nest Key kayak trip, we knew we needed to return to the keys for another adventure. These trips, and our athletic journey over the last few years, have been inspired by David Goggins book Can't Hurt Me. As a result, we work out frequently, and these trips are a sort of progress report to see how far we've come. Next year's trip has not been planned, although we're considering doing a backpacking trip out west.
    The Florida Keys is an archipelago that stretches from Miami to Key west and beyond. Aside from the natural beauty of these islands, the bridges, history, and unique animals in the Keys are well worth visiting!
    On the 7 mile bridge, as a storm chased us, Phil's bike chain broke, and he got a flat tire. Hailey helped him get back running and he rode his bike the entire seven mile bridge with a flat tire. Taylor's bike also got a flat, and she rode it for 20+ miles this way. Eventually the girls traded off riding on this disabled bike. We could have tried to change the tube on this tire, but the tire was damaged already and I feared taking off the tire would render it unusable.

    The Florida Keys 100 was outstanding! Unique and equally as fun as our North Nest Key kayak trip.
    What’s your favorite spot to visit in the Keys?

    Looked like a great trip, flat tires and all. Doing an activity like that with good friends is the kind of thing you’ll always remember.

      Yes! I hope we get to do trips like this dozens more times too 😁
      That hard times of the ride made the good times all the better.

    Cool ride, my ebike has 150 miles range so I may give it a go. I do have an amish carbon road bike too though lol. Sometimes, speed is just fun and going 40 mph is nice in traffic like that. Much safer.

    E-bikes aren't that heavy - typically in the 50lbs range. Some fat-tire or cargo models do hit 80lbs. But, you're right, after the battery is gone, an e-bike is harder to pedal. But, my new Aventon Ramblas has been tested to 105 miles on the lowest assist level on level paved trail- although it is rated for 80 miles.

    It's a cool ride. I've done it twice myself but other direction. I wish that they would turn that old 7-mile bridge into bike lane so that we don't have to ride that fast traffic new bridge. You all did it. Congrats! 👏

      @jacobsladder3619  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yea we were hoping to go from largo to Key West but the wind was so strong in the opposite direction.
      7 mile bridge definitely needs a better bike lane! I agree!
      Thanks!

      A small portion of the old 7 mile bridge was recently refurbished for cyclists and pedestrians at a very high cost, can't imagine how much it would cost to do the whole thing. Besides, there are a couple of sections that are completely missing.

      I saw this as we were riding! It looked worth the ride out to pigeon key, off the beaten path a little

    I always wondered what would happen to cyclists if one of those extra wide rigs had to cross the 7 mile bridge as you are riding on the shoulder, would there be enough width for the truck to pass you safely?

    • @jacobsladder3619
      @jacobsladder3619  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes as long as they could see you. Now if they were transporting a historic home or something on the back there would not be room. Cars were generally very respectful of us riding on the side and there were only a couple that drove by fast. It only takes one though…
      After doing many trips like this and getting hit by a car while biking in Germany, I have a new respect for bikers and bike lanes.
      Thanks for watching!

    How much of ride from Key West to Marathon(roughly 50 miles) is on the road with traffic?

    • @jacobsladder3619
      @jacobsladder3619  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard to remember exactly but I would say 30%. Thanks for watching! Are you going to do the ride?

    • @jimlastrapes3827
      @jimlastrapes3827 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Considering it, don’t like the narrow shoulders.

    • @jacobsladder3619
      @jacobsladder3619  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jimlastrapes3827 don’t let it stop you from making the trip. You can always get some flashing rear lights and ride with a friend :) people are driving pretty slow in that portion of the keys. You could also go on a weekday if that works with your schedule and there would be less cars. One thing I didn’t mention was how little shade there is on the trip. It would be best done in the winter or morning because the whole ride is quite exposed
