People are just weird, I've found in life lol. I had one friend come into my apartment to visit me one time, and she exclaimed that my perfume shouldn't be in the loungeroom. That it should be in the bedroom, well for one, my home, my rules -and two, it's my collection, the bottles are pretty and are stored for display in their own rack on the wall. Aswell as being convenient for where I use them to head out for the day. Also had another friend tell me that I should be keeping my mail by my front door, not near my hallway. Like ummmm ok, I'll keep it where I need it. What is WITH people? Srsly lol
The way it was reported did not give enough attention to the severity of the injury. The tone of most reports I heard were almost mocking her for the law suit.
Sadly, this is the classic PR from larger companies. This is also a interesting case on how rumors can get twisted when told between people. I was very young when I first heard about this case and had no idea what had really happened. When my mother tried to use it again to talk about crazy sue people, I had to explain to her how bad Stella was hurt and she had no idea what really happened.
I was one of those people who heard the twenty-millionth hand rumours (secondhand rumours that get out of control haha) and I didn’t know the real story. As soon as I saw those burns though, I was almost in tears 😭 that poor woman! There are people still blaming her for putting it between her knees: even if she juggled three cups of coffee in the street - it doesn’t matter! It obviously was molten hot and was clearly unsafe 😭😖 if it did that to her legs… imagine what it would do to your mouth! My mum fainted a few years ago and ended up on the floor with her butt on the radiator. It sounds funny (She also laughed afterwards) but it burnt her pretty bad in a small area. She was in agony and had to go to hospital, and the recovery was dreadful because it was in an area you can’t stay off of 😭 you sleep and sit on it! If my mum was in such pain with a little patch, I can’t imagine the pain Stella was in 😪
I feel so bad now. In Germany we make jokes about how wrecked the Judicial system in America is because a women suit McDonald's for poring coffee over herself. Even in law school my teachers laughed about it and told us how ridiculous this case is. But now knowing all the facts I can't believe this poor women had to go through this. This is outrageous. Very important video Kendall!!
I, also from Germany, was thinking the exact same thing when I watched the video! I feel so bad now. Really teaches you to find out the whole story before you judge…
Don’t feel too bad. We often do the same thing. “Oh we can sue for US pouring coffee over ourselves and WIN, but we can’t get a rapist convicted with every piece of evidence solidified against them.” (That’s one I’ve actually heard) Until today, I didn’t know how bad she was burned.
This comment made my whole day. Y'all really had no idea? Yes it is hot coffee but that shouldn't be that badly burnt. However guess who else didn't know how serious it was? (Being way too hot, expecting it to go into people's mouths) America! Even Americans were making mockery of her it's not just you guys ❤️ this is important. I love Kendall. Hi from the US!
The media literally manipulates people and their way of thinking, it’s sad how Stella was treated and made fun of when she was the victim of horrible burns.
It’s so sad thinking that an independent, newly retired elderly woman spent the last years of her life severely burned, traumatized, embroiled in this lawsuit and being mocked in the public around the world. I’m so glad you made this video because she deserves respect and admiration- she was a very classy lady through everything and this is a very important case even decades later. I hope she had a strong support system and got to enjoy her last years through everything.... thanks so much for bringing awareness!
I used to work at McDonald’s and I dropped a cup of coffee on my foot. It soaked through my shoe and somehow got on my foot. I had 3rd degree burns and my whole foot was swollen and infected. I believe her.
I got burned 8 years ago by McDonald's coffee in the exact same way, however the ten degree difference kept me from having to be hospitalized. It did ruin my vacation, but I am very thankful for Stella literally saving my ass. RIP
She really did help people, and its awful for what people did to her, for just trying to help people like you, that would burn themselves on the coffee in the future. Such a sweet lady. Im glad you didn't get hurt!. RIP stella 🙏
The media didn’t tell the whole truth about her injuries, etc, that’s why people were hesitant to side with her. I certainly have a different view after hearing the whole story. I never felt sorry for McDonald’s though.
I don't think the media said she was a liar , it was more a case of her choosing to put a cup of hot coffee between her legs and then suing because she spilt it .
@@breathoffreshair7795 No , that's not true . Boiling is 212 degrees . This coffee might have been 185 degrees . Think about it---if it was truly that dangerous , thousands of people would have been hurt everyday , right ? She just happened to put it between her legs and spill it .
everybody should feel ashamed for how they treated stella after wtf. i can’t believe people were eating the ass of a corporation this much. she honestly deserves much more money. i used to work at dunkin’ donuts and spilled coffee on myself all the time. coffee should not be so hot that it causes burns that bad.
@@mikehoncho3695 macdonalds wasn’t at fault for spilling coffee. they’re at fault for making their coffee too hot- way above the temperature that coffee is supposed to be brewed so they can save money on coffee. that’s why they’re at fault.
@@briannaa_xo9386 coffee is hot they lowered the temperature 10 degrees after this i highly doubt that is now any lessikley to burn you if spilled coffee would burn you unless it's just not hot which wouldn't be very good I guess some slow people don't understand this ! I bet you wanna file a suit against Ford for not having cup holders to its their fault huh? Get help!
@@briannaa_xo9386 good comeback lol ! You're lame! You know why you don't buy your girl a watch?... Because there's a clock on the kitchen stove! Go fix some sandwiches 🥪 hunny!
I remember so many times growing up hearing people mock this case. Hearing the truth as I got older, I was disgusted YET AGAIN by how shitty humans can be. And worse, corporations.
AGREED 100%. Imagine seeing an elderly woman, with 3rd DEGREE BURNS from coffee (which in my opinion doesn’t need to be served near hot enough to do that) and acting like it’s her fault. Like come on people have some compassion. Sure she spilled it, but who hasn’t spilled something by mistake. It’s so shitty to see people be so heartless.
Nobody knew the real story back then. Even I felt that way about it until I watched the Hot Coffee documentary years ago. She wasn't compensated enough.
At the time, (and somewhat still) tv late night hosts just went with whatever the popular stories were and didn't spend much, if any, time to research these stories. Even now, these hosts use anonymous posts on Twitter as proof that their story is real. It is about the joke and whether the person at the center is a victim or even exists, is irrelevant to them. They just want the laugh.
I laughed out loud when Kendall put her rabbit behind her instead of her dog just to irk the person who complained. They don't have a place to tell you animals don't belong on your furniture. I love seeing her pets, it makes me so happy!
This person easily just not watch the video how dare they tell Kendall which pet she can have on her video I would've went ahead & put my dog on anyway.
Another result from this lawsuit was when Starbucks began serving coffee in their drive through they had a policy of adding the cream and sweetener for the customer thus removing the need for the coffee to be opened while driving and McDonalds and other drive thrus have now followed that policy for years
The media didn’t want to loose them as a advertiser so they sway the story in the advertiser favor….nothing has changed now. Look at the pharmaceutical industry they control the narrative. People are influenced by the narrative they receive.
I just hope more and more ppl start to realize that the media isn’t necessarily concerned with presenting u with facts. They r concerned with ratings and pushing out their narrative (whatever that may b n the given situation). They aren’t the voice of truth or reason, and perhaps they never were. But it’s only now that we (the general public) have the resources readily available to find the truth for ourselves. U often hafta sift thru many weeds to find that blade of grass, but it is always worth it.
Not going to lie, i had judged this woman as well. Now i was a small child when this happened so all my judgment came from hear say from adults. I had no idea what the truth was until this video. I feel totally different now and hate that I judged her too.
I wish somebody from the media that initially mocked this story would share your recap of this trial. To this day, news outlets continue to spread false narratives about so many cases. It’s heartbreaking that she incurred such scars both physically and emotionally from this case. Thank you for sharing the truth!
People making fun of a poor woman getting hurt like that is absolutely disgusting. I can’t even. People are horrible. If only they saw the pictures I’d love to see their stupid faces.
But it's not your money. U can't steal because you're not rich. You're literally saying a homeless person can go in your home and steal your things !! Because they're homeless and you are not. You are a rich person next to them. Can't believe u got so much likes
I looked up her burn photos. I’m an ER nurse and I have never seen burns that bad especially(!!) from a consumable source. The amount of pain and suffering she endured is unimaginable. Ugh that breaks my heart.
Imagine being so air brained that you start sending death threats to someone, because you're in support of a company that could care less about you, and only money, especially when you don't know the facts.
I've spoken to one or two Americans who seemed to have a peculiar reverence for corporations. I also notice that in many comments they go straight for the government(which may be fair enough) but hardly ever about the corpos. Also, as far as I know, the US is the only country in the world to have affectionate nicknames for big companies. Man, they're an odd lot
@roman_the_baptist so you can drink 190F? Wow. That’s amazing. You should be a firefighter for sure seeing as you apparently have superhuman resistance to heat!
Imagine sending death threats to anyone over some bullshit that has nothing to do with your life. Imagine sending death threats ever at all. So unhinged.
It sickens me when people make jokes about her case. They don't actually know how bad it was. My high school taught us about this in our government class. I'm glad you are spreading the word about it.
Same! I learned this in high school, which is why I clicked the link. I'll just say that it was 2007/8 when I learned about it in a 'Pre Law' class. Also, I did not know about how extent her burn was! The fact that society made fun of her, sickens me.
This video is very old, but I still constantly feel so bad for her. The fact that she had to endure that SEVERE of burns, but then get ridiculed by a ton of people because they believed that they were just superficial burns is so sad :(
I honestly didn’t know this story until now, I assumed someone who had a sip of hot coffee sued over it being hot when it was obvious it would be hot. I’m glad i finally watched this because now i understand exactly what happened
@@JaazBegonias I’m on stellas side for this but I used to be a barista and I like my coffee pretty hot, so that’s how I’d make it. The complaints that it wasn’t hot enough were ENDLESS. people leave their drink for 15 minutes and still want it hot. I always wonder if this had something to do with it, just a way for them to avoid getting endless complaints.
They did it partly because the coffee remained hot on the road. People would order it and let it sit while they drove, ate, whatever. Then drank their coffee.
I feel horrible because I was one of those people that had the mentality of “omg Americans will literally sue over everything”. I did not realize the extent of her injuries and she definitely had a right to Sue McDonald’s over this. Shame on the media and McDonald’s making her out to be a scam artist and mocking this poor woman.
It's because that's the story that was told. Her and her family were drowned out in favor of the narrative from McDonald's. I remember this case and this coverage. I remember the years of mockery and the Stella Awards that were joked about... Making up or exaggerating cases. The truth told YEARS to surface, because it had become such a joke. And tbh, there were a LOT (and still are a lot) of frivolous lawsuits here. So it was believable when the narrative was "she got a little burn and blew it out of proportion"
I work at McDonald’s and I’ve had freshly brewed coffee poured on my hand which caused blisters to form, it’s really hot and I feel so sorry that they mocked her for that, especially at her age the skin isn’t as elastic and becomes more fragile, I feel so sorry she went threw that.
Well they (McDonalds) probably thought the same thing everyone else thought they (the public) knew. In the small picture its "her fault" for spilling. In the bigger picture its their fault for a bad product. Im almost positive McDonalds didnt understand the severity and laughed it off. What dummies LoL.
Regardless of the coffee being in her lap or not, had she taken a sip of it she easily could've burned her mouth. It was too hot no matter how the beverage was handled.
@Chris Tombs okay but this McDonald’s coffee was 190 and they said it was… like McDonald’s literally admitted that it was 190 F which is enough to melt your skin in 2 seconds flat making it unfit for consumption and making McDonalds negligent. If it’s too hot to drink straight away without melting your throat off then maybe instead of “caution: hot” they should have “Don’t drink this beverage straight away: It will literally melt your face off if you don’t leave it for at least 10 minutes”on the side of the cup.
@Chris Tombs That is way too fucking hot. The skin of your lips and the mucus membranes of your mouth and esophagus are highly sensitive to temperature. Just being exposed to 150 degree water for 2 seconds is enough to give you 3rd degree burns.
@Chris Tombs do you not understand how hot 190 degrees is or are you that arrogant?..that is too hot for consumption...go get u a pot of water and heat it to just 150 (normal temp for coffee at other restaurants) and pour it on yourself and see how u feel..then come back with a relevant comment.
Honestly, I bet a lot of people didn't know what they were getting into and burned the heck out of their mouth. I just hope they didn't put a lot of sugar in the coffee. 😬
Wow. In Belgium this case was used in law school as a “frivolous law suit” when I attended. Crazy to think how we’re served misinformation even on a high academic level. That was 10 years ago, we’re thinking widespread misinformation is something fairly recent. I’m again impressed by your research skills, Kendall! New subscriber consuming all your content!!! Much love!
I too found her by accident and I'm consuming everything that she has videoed and podcast for The last 5 years. She is awesome and I love that she is so real in her talkin and saying curse words that need to be said
I just googled those pictures. They are absolutely horrifying. I can’t even fathom that I held their coffee in my hands, and was inches away from burns like that. I feel so bad for Stella; that poor brave woman.
@@DoorsToHideBehind156 I found them but had to scroll through a ton of nonsense and they were really crappy quality small images, just wondering if there’s the actual photos anywhere
That's the temp at which it should be *brewed*. It cools somewhat before you drink it and people often add things like sugar and milk, which also help to cool it. This woman was horribly injured by coffee at that temp, are you confused somehow?
This case should have bankrupted McDonald’s, especially when they let the world harass her & sending her death threats. McDonald’s probably actually did a lot of those horrible things to her in retaliation for the bad press. Gag orders should not only be lifted when perpetrators use it to further abuse the victim, but gag orders in general should be rejected 99.99% of the time because it only benefits the perp.
wouldn't surprise me in the least if rotten ronnie slipped the media some cash to downplay her injuries resulting in forced ignorance to what really happened
Exactly because she as many many others was unaware of just how hot it was. Therefore without all the information she may not have chose to open it on her lap had she known how hot it was. She thought she was just ordering a traditionally hot coffee not what was being sold.
It’s so ignorant that the people are saying stuff like ‘it’s her fault’ then as soon as they are shown photos they change their minds. It’s sad how gullible people can be, this is why big problems can’t be solved.
There is a good documentary, Hot Coffee, about this case and how these major corporations and insurance companies took advantage to pass civil litigation caps screwing people. Like a doctor who refused to come in to do a c section because they were out at a restaurant and the baby ended up being born disabled and the cap ended up only taking care of the child’s healthcare for a few years. Like this wasn’t an isolated incident with McDonald’s, they just didn’t GAF.
Exactly like why in the world would I purposely spill 185° coffee on me and five myself 3rd° burns just for the fun of it like social media really needs to grow up
Most people assumed she spilt regular coffee onto herself. Yeah, that would hurt like a b**ch, but wouldn't leave you with 3rd degree burns and massive scarring. No one back then even talked about how crazy hot the McDonald's coffee was. Once people see her wounds, they are like 'Oh my. That coffee was waaayyyy too hot.' And start to understand that she wasn't solely to blame for her injuries. Most people didn't realize she had been horribly injured as the news never talked about that part. My mom's biggest complaint about McDonald's coffee is that it is unreasonably hot (even to this day) and you can't drink it upon serving.
This is because people are so brain washed by our media and why the government can take control so easily because people don’t research shit. I had no idea this even happened. Poor lady!
I saw images of Stella's burns years ago, and if anyone can look at those and still make fun of her, there is something seriously wrong with those people. People die from those kinds of burns. I hope Stella got a settlement that she was happy with.
She likely had complications and pain until she died. I knew a young girl about 16 who got burned with fry oil on her whole back. I saw her again when she was in her late 20’s and she told me her skin still has a burning sensation. You never really recover from that kind of injury.
@@anonymousher0 nobody knows what the exact amount is because of a NDA signed by all parties involved. It was settled out of court with an undisclosed sum which is never allowed to be revealed unless the NDA’s become nil and void or have a time limit like a lot of closed documents that can’t be opened for say 50 years. The amount you wrote is what she was awarded by the public court case which she refused and both parties sued each other again until a settlement was agreed upon by both parties out of court, on the conditions of NDA’s. It’s why she never spoke publicly after the settlement about the case.

I remember hearing about this and rolling my eyes and thinking “what a Karen, coffee is hot get over it.” And now that I know the ACTUAL story I feel like such a jerk for ever thinking that! Poor Stella ❤️
They literally started by asking for $18,000 and for the company to check their coffee machine temperature. This poor woman didn’t want the money or the fame of being “that lady who sued McDonald’s” she just wanted other people to be safe. Rip lovely Stella ❤️
They knew before hand that they way they kept it was dangerous. There were memos in upper management about it was so hot it was dangerous. They opted to do nothing because they didn't want to change the process. I know one of the lawyers involved in the case.
Oh my god!! I worked for McDonald’s in 2021 for almost a whole year and very early in my career there me and my boyfriend (who also worked there) were told we had the caution hot warning all over their coffees because some crazy lady just spilt coffee over herself. They definitely made it seem like this lawsuit was baseless, but man that coffee was HOT asf. Seeing her burns made me cry, a week into retirement and she had to deal with this, how sad. I’m so glad she kept fighting for herself!
This poor woman I can’t believe talk show hosts and television shows were making fun on her after the pain she went through. I’m happy she was at least compensated but people really need to stop making light of and invalidating people’s pain. The way people will go out of their way to simp for a corporation.
It really sucks that she left this world being treated like this. I don’t know why people can’t just educate themselves before jumping on a bandwagon when they clearly know nothing about the situation.
I was thinking that the entire time watching this. She seemed like such a sweet soul and I can only imagine how that felt to be the butt of the joke in the 90’s. The 90’s held NOTHING back when it came to the jokes and stuff
Bc ppl always assume that suing a company means that u only want money. The other 700 ppl probably filed but didn’t make it to trial but we will never know
I loved this video. First: I loved that because people were complaining about your dog on the furniture, you put your bunny on the furniture. You go, girl!! Your animals, your furniture, your business. Second: I grew up hearing about this case, usually because people were making fun of it. THANK YOU for putting the facts out !! Poor, Stella …..
All these years, I thought this lawsuit was a complete joke. I was a child at the time, so what I was hearing was from the adults around me. Thanks for debunking that myth, Kendall! Her story is very crucial to remember. I'm upset that McDonald's didn't realize their problem in the first place. Bless this woman's heart. I'm sad I wasn't taught the true story.
I feel absolutely horrible for poor Stella. I remember hearing this story back in the day but didn’t realize the severity of her injuries or how many other people who had similar accidents. I just cannot imagine the pain, bless her heart.
Seriously! I’m so in love with Kendall (not literally but you know what I mean lol) I’ve been a fan for the past couple years and just recently started watching her and her husbands podcast “Mile higher” 😍 she’s just awesome!
I only discovered this channel a week or so ago. I had heard the misinformation surrounding this case and thought it was a frivolous case -- until today. About 10 yrs ago I lamented to a few friends that I feel like I've been lied to my whole life (I'm 71). This case continues to confirm that feeling.
it breaks my heart that Stella didn’t even want to sue and when she finally did, because Mcdonald’s was stubborn and wouldn’t settle, she gets bullied relentlessly.
I can't imagine nonchalantly just buying coffee one day and then being in an immense amount of pain all of a sudden, being on the brink of death, only to survive with disfiguring burns and scars on my privates and legs, then being the Media's Clown. I'm sorry you had to go through this Stella T_T
Omg I’ve always wanted a rabbit 🐰 😩❤️ This is so messed up. People made a mockery of this lady and that’s not right. She suffer for no reason. All they needed to do was give her $18K.
I used to have 2 rabbits when I was in my teen years, but they multiply to 16 within a year, also they dug a lot of holes under my house, so I had to sell & gift them all 😅😅
@@aya9981 you can litter box train a rabbit. However pooping idk how easy it with that. Because normally they just poop whenever they have the urge. But peeing they tend to in one spot.
So freaking funny when Kendall put the bunny out when people complained about the dogs. I love seeing the babies in the background, they make a lot of people happy. It seems such a trivial complaint when everyone should be more concerned about society, humanity and the horrific acts committed upon others. Plus it’s adorable when she has real “bunny ears”
I get what happened to her was bad indeed But what you expect from employees to cool the coffee before serving When you make coffee at home isn’t that hot ??
@Harleen Natt Did you even watch the video? It was proven that McDonald's was purposefully brewing their coffee way hotter than at home coffee machines are even capable of. As was clearly stated in the video, no one was expecting the employee to "cool off" the coffee for her but they wanted McDonald's to serve it at a more reasonable temperature. If you make a cup of coffee at home and spill it on yourself, you likely aren't going to get third degree burns unless you purposefully leave it sitting on your skin. That's the issue. Not that the coffee was served hot instead of cold dumbass
@@harleennatt4363 i understand what you are saying. But in my opinion it should NEVER EVER be that hot. Ever not even at home. Its a drink meant to go down your throat. Why would ANYONE NEED coffee to be that hot? What of someone drank a sip immediately.
I learned about this as a kid through Seinfeld. My mom even told me she was driving when it happened, the spread of misinformation is crazy. It's so crazy to see all the cases people joked about as a child actually being so horrific! People call out generation to sensitive but really theirs wasnt sensitive enough!
I was in high school when I heard about it and definitely misinformation because I heard it from my social studies teacher and he said she was driving also.
It makes me so sad that growing up everyone talked about this case like it was a joke. It wasn't until we covered it in our tort class in my first year of law school that I realized the severity of it. Thank u for covering this!!! Covering more lawsuits would definitely be interesting
I wasn’t born when this case happened so I had to hear about it from my parents who remember seeing it on the news. It was brought up in conversation when my dad and I were in his truck and American Ride by Toby Keith was playing while we just so happened to be in a McDonalds drive through. He told me where the line “Spill a cup of coffee make a million dollars” came from and my dad sadly laughed about it and was saying she should’ve known better. I was six at the time but I remember thinking that it must’ve hurt her. I never thought about the case again until this video got recommended to me. I really wanna show this to my dad so he can see how much it actually affected her
The worst burn I ever had was the entire side of my index finger from grabbing a pan and I literally cried in agony. I can’t imagine what this poor old lady was going through, and still she didn’t want to sue but only be compensated... It‘s a disgrace that this case is being used as an example for „stupid people“
The fact is that people wouldn’t be able to sue unless they had an actual valid reason... this shows how people in power constantly twist things to get what they want

"The devils in the details" and McDonald's sure made sure as many people stayed ignorant of the details as possible. Imagine ridiculing a 79 year old woman with life threatening burns.
Wow...I'm sorry Stella 🙏. I'm so glad you covered this , I was one of the people who believed the media . So sorry for all Stella and her family had to endure 🙏
Maybe it's partly your fault, but it's largely the fault of the media for portraying Stella and her case the way they did. I learned the truth years ago, but I remember at the time how the media smeared her and made her into a complete laughingstock. The media was very effective in lying to the American people about the "dumb person who sued over coffee being hot."
There's one cushion on my couch that my cat prefers and if I'm sitting on it, she’ll cry at my feet until I move. I move every time. She's old and I will do anything to make her feel like the Queen she is
I think these people get so mad because they enforce rules that exclude their pets from certain areas and deep down they feel guilty about it, so they need to constantly remind themselves that they are right (even though they are not).
I would just like to point out that Starbucks serves their coffee at 120 for kids, 160 for adults, and if you want it extra hot, it's 170... 170 is a far cry from 190 in regards to temperature
That’s the power of nostalgic companies who appeal to people’s emotions. Disney has the same power. McDonald’s is such an integral part of people’s childhood and daily life that they think of them as their old friends/members of their family. How many kids grew up with Ronald McDonald commercials and had their birthday parties at McDonalds? So when someone questions the company’s behavior or tries to hold them accountable, consumers defend them. Not to mention people don’t seem to understand how much revenue McDonald’s makes per year.
I know . A lot of people look at this and say--she chose to put a cup of hot coffee between her legs and remove the lid . Is it McDonald's fault that she did that and spilled it on herself ? Before anyone whine about the temperature of the coffee---it's what the coffee industry experts recommended
@@exitscreaming, that's beside the point. McDonald's was already cited for their coffee giving people burns and they did lose a prior lawsuit where a (younger) woman got 3rd degree burns from their coffee. McDonald's was SERVING their coffee too hot. Also, cup holders weren't the standard in cars back then, so where was she supposed to put it?
America has such a weird culture of people willing to break their backs and die for the protection of the rich and huge corporations but will let poor people suffer and say “oh well, that’s what you get for being poor” like whut???
Agreed. A corporation should never, ever get to silence you. Not speaking about the amount of money. Fine, I guess. Not being able to share what she survived though? Hideous. She was victimized over and over by this trash corporation.
Thank you!! I was just saying I couldn’t understand why everyday people siding w McDonald’s a trillion dollar company before Stella an everyday person more relatable to them!
@@dangerouskoala6611 because they had the money to shape the narrative. Every major news show talked about this case-AND they were all on McDonald's side. It started in the media- they brought attention to the story in the first place and gave a very skewed version of what happened. If ONE outlet had showed the severity of her burns, it would have ended her being seen as the villain. Not one did, and why do you think that is? Because our media is owned by corporations, that's why😔
It comes from a lifetime of mind control propaganda via TV and now internet. They're in a trance. They can't even tell the government is nothing but actors.
Not only nationally, internationally. I was a teen in the 90s in Germany, and we were making jokes about the US legal system. I feel bad now for being so dumb, but we didn't know it better and internet wasn't a thing. You only had the media for information. We didn't joke about a specific person, the narrative was more, that you can sue companies in the USA because you (personally) found their coffee too hot. And everyone had the opinion the US should change that. That's how propaganda works. And is Bush trippin? Frivolous ASBESTOS claims. Are you okay, Sir. And Obgyns showing their love for US women? Like, get a grip, man.
I didn’t watch the whole video yet, but one of my friends said that this lady is his great grandmother (I can’t remember how many greats were in front of grandmother) so when I saw this I was surprised that she’d make a video. I never realized how well known this case was.
The woman who was burned was from New Mexico. She had third degree burns and they showed it on the local news!! It was horrible! I'm so glad she didn't die from the burns or infection! God bless her!
She eventually did. IIRC her official cause of death was said to be long-lasting complications associated with needing repeat skin grafts. She didn't die immediately but her burns and age did catch up to her.
I worked at McDonald's for 11 years and during training the Owner told us about the case and even explained how it was scam. I just believed them. Now watching this I want to punch him for making us believe it was a scam instead of teaching us a safe way to handle this
If this poor woman wasn't allowed to talk about the case, why was everyone else? And if she wanted to be frivolous, she could've tried to sue all those news outlets/politicians etc that were spreading false information about her
Imma be honest... I don’t think it’s even 20% her fault. They made a coffee that they KNEW was too hot. They knowingly sold a product that wasn’t safe. Whatever happens is now on them imo
I personally think, it should’ve been 5% her fault or less, and 95% or more McDonald’s fault.! Ugh so frustrating! I never knew the facts for the case I just seen what the media was saying about it and making fun of her.
It's also important to note that she made a mistake spilling the coffee on herself. McDonald's knew that the coffee was too hot to serve, but decided to sell it anyway. Setting aside the topic of whose fault it was, McDonald's knew ethically what they were doing was wrong, selling a harmful product for money instead of caring about customers.
Yes it’s not her fault at all I’m glad she sued bc ive spilled some or others had come back bc their coffee has spilled and they have never burned up themselves like this i am glad she filled this lawsuit!! It saved a lot of people.
I can’t believe someone actually told you that your animals don’t belong on your furniture! What nerve! I’ve always appreciated the way you always have your animals around you. You really love them and I love that. What a beautiful bunny.💕
I heard that she was driving and I heard that they give her not much money at first. I heard about the burns she got form the coffee. Yes I know she was but driving. I want to make sure my facts are right .
I don't think most people thought she was a scam artist . It was more a question of----why would you put a cup of hot coffee between your legs and take the lid off .
I am an RN and can tell you that burns like this cause the worst pain imaginable. And yes you can die from the shock and electrolyte losses with severe burns that can cause cardiac arrest.
I got thrown out of the car when a drunk caused my car to flip on I-95. I was scalped, chest ripped open and hanging off, both lungs collapsed, liver ripped nearly in half , skull cracked and brain swelling, but by far the WORST pain I’ve ever experienced was the pain from the deep road rash over half my body. I still have gravel embedded in my skin. But they said it was basically deep 2nd degree/3rd degree burns. The dressing changes took two hours every day (twice a day) and every time it felt like they were peeling my skin off. I was on a fentanyl patch with diluadid every 1 hour and it still didn’t touch the pain. I can’t imagine how someone deals with it, but to minimize someone’s injuries the way they did and make it a joke is absolutely disgusting.
I worked at McDonalds in my teen years and asked my managers about this case, my favorite manager said out loud for the boss to hear, "As a McDonalds employee, it was the womans fault for driving with coffee in her lap." When the boss walked away she told me in private, "as a human being, McDonalds screwed that woman over, the coffee is entirely too hot and she wasn't even driving. Ya'll need to be VERY, VERY careful when your pouring it so you don't get it on yourself."
@@lilacviita2575 she never once said the coffee cup ripped or fell apart. She said it flipped up side down on her lap and that is how it all happen. The cup did not just fall apart.
Its frightening how media can manipulate the situation even more frightening the way alot of people believe what is put in front of them instead of finding the facts for themselves...love the bunny!! I have 6! Xx
I literally don’t understand the argument of “well it’s partially her fault because she spilled the coffee.” She was going to DRINK IT. Imagine the injuries if she would’ve done that. Her whole mouth, throat, possibly her digestive system?? It’s not like it wasn’t going to burn her if she just drank it rather than spilled it in her lap. It’s still meant to come into contact with your body. That makes no sense.
Totally. Imagine having burns like that IN your throat! Obviously l don't know for certain but, l think the jury may have put that in to give McDonalds one less thing they could possibility appeal.
EXACTLY. Hearing what was said for the trial pissed me off. She is an elderly woman. Her hand-eye coordination is not the best. I know she moves slower than someone younger than her. She accidentally spilled it, and I'm sure she tried her hardest to not spill the coffee. Why would anyone want to spill something on themselves, especially hot coffee?
"Imagine the injuries if she would’ve done that. Her whole mouth, throat, possibly her digestive system??" This much is nonsense. Water that has been boiled can be drunk comfortably, certainly safely, after 1 minute cooling
Thank you for making this video, it really brought to my awareness how bad this case truly was. For years I thought that Stella was driving with her coffee in her lap and accidentally spilled it on herself at a stop or something like that. I feel so bad for Stella, she went through all that pain only to be made a villain and mocked for this. I truly hope more case like this because I think it’ll make us more aware, i remember i’d laugh about the warning thinking it was silly, “it’s fresh coffee, of course it’s going to be hot” i never knew they kept their coffee THAT hot.
What baffles me is that the celebrities on TV, the cartoons, etc. didn’t even do their research on what actually happened! Instead they’re bullying this poor, sweet old woman. What happened to her was actually horrific. I feel terrible for what she went through
Media is used to sway a narrative all the time, it's done on purpose. I'm sure that McDonald's and possibly other large powerful industries were a large part of _getting_ the media talking heads, comics, etc to make fun of the situation and spread disinfo. If there is a narrative being pushed in the media, TV shows, etc, always wonder *why,* and what the truth is!
I agree. I was burned bad when they didn't put the lid on correctly. She basically poured it on me. Too bad was 35 years ago before they had cameras to prove it. Why's their coffee so friggin hot anyway? U can't even drink it for half hour.
all they did was slap a “caution: hot beverage” label on the cups, sadly her injuries didn’t do anything other that put words on a cup of something that people should know already. you need boiling water to make coffee.
@@mewbrinny the coffee you drink has been cooled with creamer from the fridge. McDonald’s keeps their milk at room temperature most of the time and the cup had a lid keeping the boiling liquid inside. Kettles boil at 100c she spilled 90c liquid on her, which is the equivalent of boiling the kettle, immediately picking it up and pouring it directly onto your skin.
I’m SO. GLAD. The reality of this case is becoming more well known. This is a true story of triumph in that an individual took on a massive corporation and won! But at a massive cost. What a badass lady though.
I'd also like to emphasize that her coffee cup was different than the one pictured in the thumbnail. Her cup was as thin as either a cold drink paper cup or a thin styrofoam cup. The cover was a plastic and as thin as a cold drink plastic lid. To make matters worse, the only way to drink it was to tear up a large plastic tab that was part of the lid. This left the thin plastic top with a huge hole and a thin flimsy cup. 20:10
Especially after the fact lol. These lawyers have no souls, so fair enough, they defend these jerks. HOWEVER, after it’s all done, I’d appreciate it if they dropped the act and acknowledge the facts (like lawyers who defend serial killers - after the conviction/execution, they say “he was the worst person I’ve ever met and he deserved what he got”) 😂🤷♀️ Like, drop the bullshit please. That lady in the video claiming that McDonald’s were totally sensible and had done lots of scientific research and it was the perfect temperature?! Oh please 🙄😂
Today people defend the vax companies when people die in result of the vax. Or they just say its not true. So, these things happen today too, just with different topics.
@@TallulahFoxxx There are a bunch of defense lawyers I see that I just don't understand. How can you defend someone that's done something so obviously evil? It blows my mind. I know the answer- money. It's sad and scary that people can choose money over doing the right thing
Agreed. My parents used to have rules about the couch for our dog because she was big and would make it sink, but once she passed, they regretted that rule because moments with her meant more than a couch. I used to let her on the couch all the time when they weren't home and she would get so excited
Imagine having the nerve to tell someone what pets should and shouldn't be on furniture that you don't own....LOL
Some people are just really that unhappy
People are just weird, I've found in life lol.
I had one friend come into my apartment to visit me one time, and she exclaimed that my perfume shouldn't be in the loungeroom. That it should be in the bedroom, well for one, my home, my rules -and two, it's my collection, the bottles are pretty and are stored for display in their own rack on the wall. Aswell as being convenient for where I use them to head out for the day.
Also had another friend tell me that I should be keeping my mail by my front door, not near my hallway. Like ummmm ok, I'll keep it where I need it.
What is WITH people? Srsly lol
Lmao seriously
The hubris!
Right?
Nobody's saying its McDonald's fault that she spilled the coffee, the issue is it shouldn't have been that hot
Exactly! NOTHING you buy from a food service establishment should be capable of giving 3 degree burns. NOTHING.
And they intentionally made it that hot so that the crappy/cheap coffee would not be so bitter.
They were insensitive.
right and also if she would have drunk the coffee wouldn’t it burn her mouth too?
The way it was reported did not give enough attention to the severity of the injury. The tone of most reports I heard were almost mocking her for the law suit.
This pissed me off. McDonald's should be ashamed of themselves. They allowed the media to bully this lady and the facts were there.
If my mum was in such pain with a little patch, I can’t imagine the pain Stella was in 😪
Pissed of too , I was like fuk you McDonald’s give that old lady her damn money !! 😡
Did they allow or did they plant the seed and fan the flames..?
An elderly lady at that
I feel so bad now.
“Oh we can sue for US pouring coffee over ourselves and WIN, but we can’t get a rapist convicted with every piece of evidence solidified against them.” (That’s one I’ve actually heard)
Until today, I didn’t know how bad she was burned.
I’m from Russia, heard the same things! Crazy!!!
This comment made my whole day. Y'all really had no idea? Yes it is hot coffee but that shouldn't be that badly burnt. However guess who else didn't know how serious it was? I got burned 8 years ago by McDonald's coffee in the exact same way, however the ten degree difference kept me from having to be hospitalized. It did ruin my vacation, but I am very thankful for Stella literally saving my ass. RIP
She really did help people, and its awful for what people did to her, for just trying to help people like you, that would burn themselves on the coffee in the future. Such a sweet lady. Im glad you didn't get hurt!. RIP stella 🙏

The disgusting "comedians" making jokes about her actually getting HURT is horrible. Thank you for telling the real story
thank you, Kendall, for getting the whole story out!
They probably don't know the actual story.
Nobody knew the real story back then. Even I felt that way about it until I watched the Hot Coffee documentary years ago. She wasn't compensated enough.
If you get offended by a comedian, I don’t know what to tell ya
Which video was it under?
I know I love seeing her pets!
It's probably the same type of Karen who would call abuse for "never letting them out we never see them!"
I loved that too, tell em Miss Kendall 😂
Another result from this lawsuit was when Starbucks began serving coffee in their drive through they had a policy of adding the cream and sweetener for the customer thus removing the need for the coffee to be opened while driving and McDonalds and other drive thrus have now followed that policy for years
I'm a burn survivor and no one in their right minds would ever want to go through that pain.. This is awful.

I know :( People should learn their facts before making judgements
saw the gnarly pics, should have been shown to people who made fun of her.
The media didn’t want to loose them as a advertiser so they sway the story in the advertiser favor….nothing has changed now. Look at the pharmaceutical industry they control the narrative. People are influenced by the narrative they receive.
No one is at fault here.

Yup. Some of the settlements that were mentioned in this video were for third degree burns to people’s throats
@Chris Tombs But it only takes 2 seconds at 150 degrees, 6 seconds at 140 degrees, or 30 seconds at 30 degrees to cause third degree burns

@Noah Moon what and you drink it that hot? Load of bs
@Noah Moon yeah, but you should wait for it to cool down a bit before drinking it
That's the temp at which it should be *brewed*. It cools somewhat before you drink it and people often add things like sugar and milk, which also help to cool it. This woman was horribly injured by coffee at that temp, are you confused somehow?
@Noah Moonwatch the video again, the car didn't have cup holder
They should’ve made everyone on the defense drink a cup of 190° coffee
That would have been a good thing to present in court:)

The fact that Ms. Stella was blamed in any capacity is fucking sick. McDonald’s is a joke. She should have gotten way more than she did.

Exactly because she as many many others was unaware of just how hot it was. Therefore without all the information she may not have chose to open it on her lap had she known how hot it was. She thought she was just ordering a traditionally hot coffee not what was being sold.
Exactly. If anything it was McDonalds fault. Why were they serving it that hot. Others were gettin burned as well. Stella just wanted her coffee 🙄
Poor lady!
This whole world is Gullible some

All these years, I thought this lawsuit was a complete joke. I was a child at the time, so what I was hearing was from the adults around me. Thanks for debunking that myth, Kendall! I get what happened to her was bad indeed
But what you expect from employees to cool the coffee before serving
When you make coffee at home isn’t that hot ??

I’m so sorry for every joke I’ve made or laughed at about this. Ignorance is my fault. Thank you for doing this story. God Bless.
Those women after they saw the burn pictures changed their minds. The media never focused on very important facts. Thx for this story
Idk why someone would get upset over what others do with their pets, like the dog sitting on the couch doesn't hurt it or anything.
I know, I love seeing her dogs/pets in the background.
I would just like to point out that Starbucks serves their coffee at 120 for kids, 160 for adults, and if you want it extra hot, it's 170... 170 is a far cry from 190 in regards to temperature
Usually they are getting them hot chocolate, those are the milk temps
Wrong, it is always 160, extra hot is 170. Im a barista haha
And yes kids temp is 120

I feel so terrible for Stella, she seemed so sweet and she does NOT deserve the things people say about her 💔
That’s the power of nostalgic companies who appeal to people’s emotions.

She accidentally spilled it, and I'm sure she tried her hardest to not spill the coffee. Why would anyone want to spill something on themselves, especially hot coffee?
"Imagine the injuries if she would’ve done that. Her whole mouth, throat, possibly her digestive system??"
This much is nonsense. Water that has been boiled can be drunk comfortably, certainly safely, after 1 minute cooling

I feel terrible for what she went through
They still do it to this day. If you don’t agree with their narrative they will take you down with 0 facts.
Exactly the same now but even worse. Always do your own research from multiple sources.b
Even if they did, the news was reporting it incorrectly as well.
@@purpleshoespurp3462 Yep! Very true. It's really sad how many people buy it hook, line, and sinker too!
its so funny how people did not realise that through this law suit she saved alot of people from going through what she did or worse
I agree. I was burned bad when they didn't put the lid on correctly. She basically poured it on me. Too bad was 35 years ago before they had cameras to prove it. Why's their coffee so friggin hot anyway? U can't even drink it for half hour.
But she didn't. McDonald's hasn't changed a thing. They haven't lowered the temp of their coffee at all.
all they did was slap a “caution: hot beverage” label on the cups, sadly her injuries didn’t do anything other that put words on a cup of something that people should know already. you need boiling water to make coffee.
@Chris Tombs Honestly just fuck off. Fucking waste of space.
Agreed!! Granny is savage!!
I'm so happy you covered this story!! I had no idea. From now on, if I hear someone joking about Stella, I will SET THEM STRAIGHT!!
LOVE that you are bringing awareness to this Kendall!
Bro it already happened wym awareness
Your fu#@ing furniture
Absolutely- this is just insane.
@@adriandominguez3596 a lot of people don’t know the true story. “awareness”.
Imagine defending a billion dollar corporation over an old lady with third degree burns. Couldn’t be me 🤢
Especially after the fact lol. These lawyers have no souls, so fair enough, they defend these jerks. HOWEVER, after it’s all done, I’d appreciate it if they dropped the act and acknowledge the facts (like lawyers who defend serial killers - after the conviction/execution, they say “he was the worst person I’ve ever met and he deserved what he got”) 😂🤷♀️
Like, drop the bullshit please.
@@tjv1516 No.... not really.
LIVING for the dog snark. Dogs have a limited fucking lifespan and area to go. Why not let them on the couch?!? Ugh. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL RABBIT!
Agreed!
Totally agree!! Uh my dogs are on my couches and my bed!! LOL
Agreed. My parents used to have rules about the couch for our dog because she was big and would make it sink, but once she passed, they regretted that rule because moments with her meant more than a couch. I used to let her on the couch all the time when they weren't home and she would get so excited
Agreed! Can you imagine being the type of person who feels motivated/justified in criticizing someone for allowing their dog on their couch?!
@@xosecox12 This comment made me tear up ❤
Thank you for sharing this case.
I feel sorry for this poor woman.
Me too!! My goodness 😳 So painful!!
