- Marc tears down a small $70 DVR from FoxtechFPV which should be good for FPV. Under the hood reveals some very nice hacker friendly features. The name is a bit of a mouthful: Mini D1 quality SD card video recorder.
Thanks Marc! Really enjoy your videos man.
Thanks!, Review is coming once I try out all the settings. I might put a short review above.
Mark - Excellent tear down clip showing the extras this unit might do.
You mentioned you were doing some test clips using the DVR.
We are looking to use this for remote surveillance work and wondering if you know
the standby current draw etc so we can figure battery life etc etc.
Cant find a thing in the reference materials..
Any help would be great.
Many thanks
David - Melbourne, Aus
Codec info read from VLC container is ASF.
MPEG-4 Video (M4S2)
704x576
30FPS
audio 8kHz 8 bits per sample.
I have just started recording some flights with this. There were lots of artifacts which was dissapionting. However it could be because I am using the video pass through function which tended to lock up for short periods.
It works well enough, The video seems highly compressed and it saves in some weird asf container (inside is mpeg4). Once I get a new airframe in the air I will be using it to record all my flying.
I remember seeing on other devices it can be disabled by editing a text file on the sd card. Not sure about this one yet.
Marc,
This is a pretty cool piece of kit - I am using the Mini DV01 with the built in 5.8 RX and LCD screen in a video ground station but cannot get rid of the DVR OSD, which interferes with the FPV OSD data. Does this item allow you to turn of the OSD on the video pass through?
Alan
It will work, not sure if the quality would compare or if the format would be right for you.
My DVR is wired up to my diversity controller at the moment next time I work on it will take some measurements.
Not sure if it would have a standby mode.
If the quality looks as clear as it does on TV then it might be enough. I know mpeg4 uses a lot of compression but I'm not sure what video format this thing records to. My current setup records in MPEG1 or 2 video and the quality is acceptable but there is comb effects with fast parts of the videos. there is no deinterlace on it. The software only lets me record in 2 formats and they both don't even work so I'm using the software from my old capture device.
Thanks for doing this I learned something to day (watchdog).
I bought this from FoxTech about 3 months ago & I am really pleased with it.
About the battery.... I believe it's there so that when the plug to the power is pulled it can use the power from it to finish closing the file to the SD card.
I've used cheaper "DVR's" that don't have that and when the pwr cord is pulled, the last file that is open is lost because the unit didn't have pwr to close out the file... make sense?
Proper video review coming one day:
I have been using this a bit as you can see in my latest videos.
Video format is a pain in the bum to convert and on certain compression ratios it drops a lot of frames. It also gets some massive artifacts like I have never seen before. I think the compression settings are backwards in the menu. Got to do more testing.
Anyone know if there is a firmware update?
ok give us a follow up on the video quailty, data rate of recording... hope you get the tricopter up again sooner
I am looking for something like this to record gameplay footage off my playstation and to record VHS tapes to the computer. I know there are video to USB capture devices that do this b/c I have two. The point is I want to eliminate the computer from doing the heavy lifting (encoding) when I could just get a small device like this to do all the work. Then I can just plug the SD card into my computer and then work with my videos.
Converting #FPV footage from the mini dvr recorder with the ffmpeg command line program:
ffmpeg -i 00000004.ASF -vcodec prores -profile 3 -an output.mov
RCHacker #16 - Mini D1 SD card video recorder. Teardown.
is there a simple way
for computer illiterate people like myself to convert these .asf files to something viewable? Mac or Windows??
Nice vid... subscribed. Thanks :)
how many seconds the motion detector is triggered at a distance of 3-4 meters?
Is it possible to adjust the motion detector?
Found on aliexpress for $ 59.90 including delivery.
Sorry for my english (translate.google)
Very nice! Subbed and thumbed :-)
have tested the recording of this dvr?
Descent video quality but terrible audio quality. I have a cellphone recorder that has 8khz audio and it sounds horrible. I may go with the vupoint solutions video to SD converter. Still records in mpeg4 but it's better audio quality. Now to find it in a store.
You think I can use this unit to playback video to my fatshark dominator?
Martijn van Gene Yes, it should work.
RCHacker Awesome. Thanks man!
