    Mikami is also dark reflection of japanese society.
    Cold, calculating with machine like sense of duty. In a way he looks at people as cogs in machine without truly looking at them as "people". Including himself. He believes that everyone should blindly follow rules for better society.
    He believes in cold, machine like collectivism.

    I find it ironic and serendipitous that Mikami and Lind L. Taylor look exactly the same and we're the first and last people that made light mess up on his plan.
    Lind L. Taylor being his mistake of killing him off and leading L to confirm that light was in Japan and Mikami going to his safe vault to "kill" Miss Takada a minute after light wrote her name on a ripped piece of the notebook in his lil watch compartment.
    Not to mention that Gevanni and Ray Penbur look similar so ig it's like a full circle of those whom Light killed before came back in a different way to lead his downfall.
    I guess Irony can be a funny thing

    Light did intend to keep Mikami alive. In the final volume of the manga he states: " The names of Near, the SPK members, and the members of the Japanese Investigative team will all be written down in the notebook today. Mikami will do the honors. I still have use for him yet. I'm going to keep him alive. He will be my eyes.

    I disagree with the notion that Mikami did not accept the position for power. Mikami was chosen purely for his desire for power - which is why Kira (Light) must give him something (in this case, power) in exchange for loyalty.
    Mikami is portrayed as someone who always attempted to do the right thing despite having no power. He is someone who is physically weak, and there's speculation that he may not even be intelligent enough (perhaps blinded by his pursuit of justice). He was someone who was bullied for attempting to do the right thing for the very reason that he is not strong enough to do it protect anyone in the first place.
    Take standing up to a bully for example: you have to win the fight, or at least be able to stand up to the bully in order to save whoever they are trying to victimize. But his childhood is portrayed as how he played out his ideals and couldn't save anyone, and brought himself trouble in a way he cannot even defend himself from. He became a victim himself for attempting to do the "right thing". That doesn't solve anything, in fact it makes things worse!
    Mikami became a prosecutor for the same reason he was the best person Kira has chosen: he is an agent of justice. Someone who (attempts to) judges who is evil and must be punished and who is not. Before having the death note he was only able to use the law (and government force such as the police) to enforce his justice... but with a death note? he does not have to go through anyone but his own judgement. Now THAT, is power.
    As for Light, he is more than willing to cede power to someone who wants power, as long as who he cedes power to continues to play the facade that Kira's path is toward a perfect world free of evil-doers...and all Mikami has to do in exchange, is sell himself to Kira as his minion who kills whoever stands in his way. A small price to pay from the perspective of Mikami.
    In any dystopian novel, you will always have those agents who are in positions of power who believes whole-heartedly of the organization - but the true motive for them is to protect their own position within the organization so they can stay in power. These people will always do what the organization requires, in exchange for power.
    Mikami's true colours are revealed once he has the sufficient powers through the death note, because Mikami is portrayed as a meek character who cannot stand up for anyone (including himself) but with the death note that changes everything.
    But you're right in one thing: Mikami is a true pawn of the Kira, because of Mikami's ideals and pursuits.

    • @KatoBeyond
      @KatoBeyond  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I would contend the point that Mikami is the type who would try to protect his position of power; I think he's the type who would accept any role that would most help Kira. Despite this disagreement, this is an excellent comment

    • @tidepods5506
      @tidepods5506 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Id say Mikami is pretty intelligent, his intelligence is almost near Light's as to why they were the perfect duo. But this was the problem, he was too much like Light precisely why they were defeated.

    • @tidepods5506
      @tidepods5506 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Villain Gaming | Check About Yeah because he expected Mikami to listen to his order no matter what. Doesn’t take away the fact he disobeyed the order due to the fact how similar Mikami and Light thinking was and had the exact idea the moment Takada was kidnapped.

    • @tidepods5506
      @tidepods5506 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Villain Gaming | Check About Yeah so was Lights' pov. Do you think he just killed Takada for funsies? No. He did it because he knew they would've probably interrogated her. Light wasn't specific because 1) he studied Mikami for so long that he didn't expect him to break his repeating schedule and expected to follow any orders given by Kira 2) he didn't trust anyone and didn't want someone else to fully understand the Death Note. No matter what you think, both Light and Mikami's thinking was so compatible they almost knew what the other would do. Did you forget how impressed Light was when Mikami figured out what he meant almost instantly and what Light wanted in order to fool the task force? "Mikami, you're even better than I expected!" Pretty much proves Mikami was a mini-Light. Not as intelligent as him, but they both had similar thoughts when it came to certain situations as to why Light lost.

    • @tidepods5506
      @tidepods5506 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Villain Gaming | Check About No, it has to do with them, being similar, again both had the same thoughts and actions when it came to the situations they faced, why Light praised him when they both encountered each other through the phone call, he even came to the exact conclusion Light did, when he found out Takada was in a space where she couldn't move and wrote down the exact death she had to face to destroy any evidence, that couldn't have happened if Mikami didn't have the exact thinking as Light did, so his mistake wasn't that he wasn't specific, it was that he chose someone, that was too much like him

    Mikami is one of my favorite DN characters but he was done so poorly in the Anime it’s insulting. Half of the content from the second half of the manga was cut for the anime due to time, they could have easily commissioned a few extra episodes or made the last few episodes longer to allow the storyline to breathe a little instead of rushing through everything. This is why I prefer the Manga, especially the Near storyline but the anime is still awesome and is a nostalgic classic.

    When I watched the anime adaption, and read the manga version of the story, it's interesting enough that, in the endings from both the anime, and the manga versions of the story, that one ending in the anime, Teru kills himself with a pen which reasons being is that his view of Kira, aka Light Yagami was crushed and broken when he found out that he was no god at all, so he took his own life in depression, this allows Light to escape though, but his deathly fate remained the same, where as in the manga version of the story, Teru resents Light, calling him not god, but scum, and how he put him in the situation he's currently in after being apprehended by Nears group, so yeah, in either ending, Light screwed up his life to the bitter end.

    This is honestly the main reason I was upset with Death Note the first time I watched it
    Kira promised to show Ryuuk and us the creation of his New World ever since episode 1 and from that point forward the story only derailed into an arguably fun mind game that haz nothing to do with the worldbuilding of dystopia under a well meaning tyrant born a mere student who received the power of a death god

      @AdaptiveApeHybrid 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Very interesting. I'm not so bummed out about that but I do understand. I feel this way about other aspects, or a lack of them rather.
      Like I wish the Shinigami were fleshed out more. If the fan theories about how most of them come into existence from using death notes themselves when they were human were true, there could have been really interesting stuff written about that. That could have added a very unique bend to the story. Would have been a great way to integrate more philosophy on ethics into the show and, imo, moral complexity is super interesting and worth exploring

      Indeed, that would make the Shinigami a modern vampiresque type of entity(meaning the traditional vampires - zombified nobles who to continue preying on their living subjects became soulless monsters) as this take on the japanese god of death have them be people who received the power to take others life at the cost of their own afterlife(despite everyone in Death Note going to Nothingness anyway) and as a result became intangible monsters who claim the life force of those they write the name.

    The one thing that never made sense to me was the fake notebook plan. Replacing a few pages in the back with fake pages and then just using those pages at the very end would have eliminated all the problems. Mikami would have been free to kill instead of just passing names and faces (which was risky) or he could have done it just to throw people off...and then regardless of whether the spokesperson (i forgor her name) was captured or not, disposing of her wouldn't risk revealing the entire plan
    and then either way, Mikami would only have to retrieve the real pages at the end...and then regardless of whether or not the notebook was real or fake...it would have been checkmate

    • @Asmo_Lay
      @Asmo_Lay 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You won't risk the possibility that fake pages may become as lethal as entire note.

    • @megarotom1590
      @megarotom1590 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Asmo_Lay I'm confused by your point, I was just saying tear out some pages and make some fake ones instead of making an entire fake notebook, and just grab that hidden page on the day of. The only reason Light lost was because Mikami had to grab the real book to get rid of Takada (he was unaware Light had it covered). A risk that would have been avoided if Mikami just kept the real book.

    You referenced yugi moto in another video and I think that's very important. The millennium puzzle grants it's user an active luck boost based on the desperation of the situation. It's never stated out right, but the difference between misa without the notebook, and with, is drastic enough to prove that the death note grants a static intelligence buff to any human who uses it. Just like the puzzle. Light without the note is still one of the most intelligent humans on the planet, and the boost he gets makes a ton of difference.

  • @sam.lipchutz
    @sam.lipchutz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    I always wondered if/why Light would kill Mikami. Obviously he’s extremely loyal and would do anything for light because he’s god in his mind, but he’s still a loose end that knows Light’s true identity and also has the power to kill Light. However, Mikami has the shinigami eyes which are extremely useful to Light who is unwilling to shorten his own remaining lifespan by half for them. Throughout the series light has been very willing to take risks when the reward is big, and while Mikami is a small risk, his eyes are a big reward. I’d think that Light would keep Mikami alive for the sole purpose of using the shinigami eyes. He could continue to use Mikami for killing criminals but wouldn’t that make Mikami Kira and Light just a former Kira. If Light’s goal was to be god of the new world and not only is his identity not known, but he isn’t even doing it himself, then would he have really succeeded? What would Light have done once all “evil” was gone and there was literally no more crime. He could begin killing all “lazy” people like the unemployed, and then all old people, or all poor people. But eventually there’d be no one left to kill but himself. What he could also do once all his threats were gone is become a politician and work his way up to head of state while also owning his own businesses building his wealth using the death note. He could then start controlling the government and all businesses but only in Japan. If he wanted to control the government in other countries he’d have to employ lobbyists but that only gives you so much power. He could somehow kill everyone outside of Japan by using the death note and or manipulating other countries into going to war with each other and all countries being obliterated and uninhabitable. Leaving Japan as the only populated place on earth where he had all the power and money. He could create laws as well as enforce them and create companies and jobs that do his bidding. At this point I think he’d only care about prolonging his life or maybe having children that would continue as Kira, but after either doing that or killing everyone he’d realize that he has nothing left to do and he will eventually die. At this point he might write his own name in the death note but give himself a very painless and pleasurable death like Light Yagami dies in his sleep by being incinerated within a thousandth of a second after ingesting the most pleasurable drug known to man and experiencing the most pleasurable orgasm in the history of existence and falling into the most pleasurable sleep of all time.

    I think that if Light and Mikami had successfully killed Near and continue working together, they would kill each other. Mikami is way more righteous than Light so he would eventually see the selfish side of Light. It would only be a matter of time before he delete Light because he has more power than Light. Light on the other hand will definitely see that coming because he understands that the moment Mikami learns of his identity, he will become a threat to Light

    Light and L are two highly manipulative psychopaths with different loose principles and goals to justify their actions who get depressed when they're bored and would die for a sense of purpose. That's why I didn't feel sad when they both died, they died doing what they enjoy the most, facing death for a sweet addictive adrenaline rush. Light was a vigilante and as the first OP song lyrics imply, has a revolutionary sense of justice which is often chaotic, swift and brutal while L represents the authorities fighting to be the exclusive enforcers of violence. They both strive to be leaders of both opposite sides of the battle and take the challenge very personally. Neither of them care about the material conditions and injustices that cause crime to rise in the first place as Light only once wacked a group of degenerate shareholders of a major corporation as a distraction and wasn't that much focused on combating wage theft or imperialism, only surgically amputating the resulting symptoms of the broader issues which in turn ended wars and lowered crime rates. This was all done with a sense of simple reward and punishment without any nuance and as a bonus so he can justify playing god.

  • @blutroyale8072

    Light uses morality as a means to become the god of a new world. Mikami sees morality as an end in itself.
    An interesting observation in the manga is that Mikami's background chapter tells he "reflected on his surroundings" from a very young age.
    The images depicted are taken from TV and newspapers. With his mother, who probably worked all day (being a single mother), and no other relatives or friends, Mikami was actually raised by TV and mass media, and their contents tend to simplify good and evil for sensationalistic effect.
    No wonder he developed such a binary view of morality; had he interacted more with people as a child, he could hace developed a more balanced, nuanced moral compass.

    I really enjoyed your take explaining mikami and light respectively. I also enjoyed the background music as it rather fitted the subject at hand really well, what is the name of the song used in the early stages on the video that contained the guitar sound?

    You should've brought up the biggest red flag of the new world that Mikami and Light both wish for..
    The eradication of laziness.
    Crime and evilness are things we fight against already so its easy to think a society without evil would a utopia but laziness? We've all been lazy, now its a slippery slope. What other traits would Kira go after? Suddenly the society looks very dystopic just by that offhand comment of Mikami.
    Another thing that's startling is how fast Mikami chose to announce this, he is far more giddy about this aspect of the new world than even Kira.

    Personally I have always been of the opinion that the ending to death note is shite and that realistically light should have won not just from a logic stand point but story wise it would have been way more interesting to see, plus they could have done a sequel series which could have dealt with the aftermath of light victory like what was suggested in the video.

    deathnote and code geass are most pschyo animes. watch something light hearted like dragonball, YuYu hakusho , rurouni kenshin and onepiece,naruto , bleach.

      Ironic how you missed the point of my comment. I wasn't trying to address the main point of the video I was correcting something clearly wrong.
      It's like a video about camping but I make a time stamp and comment "actually the that tool is called (insert name)". I'm not trying to address the main point. I'm addressing that he made a mistake. He's incorrect in this one point.
      That's what I'm doing here. I'm not trying to address the main point. I'm correcting something that is incorrect.
