This is why more people own a Rotary mower than a Cylinder mower and probably will for all of time unless someone figures out how to make a reasonably priced battery/gas powered Cylinder mower. The reel mowers achieve a decent cut but the striping is abysmal. I’m borderline tempted to fit a big league lawns stripe kit to a push reel mower and make my own average man’s Cylinder mower since none of these manufacturers have the common man in mind when manufacturing their solutions. Whoever does is going to start a lawn mowing revolution that will change lawns across the world.

Works great! th-cam.com/users/postUgkxprGGPRQoChQaA8u58dt7miEpxQBKiWeJ More difficult with longer grass, though, but I was expecting that. I have a small back yard, it seemed like overkill to buy a lawnmower with an engine. This is easy to carry in and out of the basement through the bulkhead. Very sharp (be careful). At the back of the mower are little wheels, which I use when pulling the mower backwards, so it's easy to readjust direction. I'm including a photo which shows the before and after for my lawn when it was at its longest. For long grass like that you really have to put some muscle into it, and I needed to go into a new section of grass with some momentum, but when the grass is only an inch or two higher than regular cut height it's quite easy. The lawn is still patchy and full of weeds, but at least it's a good height! A step in the right direction.

Very informative. Those cylinder mowers are precision machines for the connoisseur. I have a pair of old ones I found I was going to sell but may just keep one after watching this, although my lawn is quite rough at the moment.
I noticed the crank is slightly bent on the battery rotary when you spun the blade. That means it has struck an object. A blade carrier with swing back blades save that from happening. A heavier disc blade carrier also has much more reciprocating mass which helps the mower run smoother and the momentum actually helps it perform better.

This is the video that encouraged me to go for a cylinder. I used a Hayter 56 for many years and it did a great job but as you say I wanted to take the lawn to the next level. I ordered a Kensington 20b from Allett with a scarifier/ lawn rake and a verticutter. I will still use the old Hayter for general work but will use the 20b for the perfection. • @LlyleHunter

I rake twigs and stones prior to mowing before I mow any mow how there’s a reason that I use both but my rotary only once per month. I use a roller driven manually powered reel mower made for putting greens, tennis courts etc a few times per week however every month I rake my lawn from one end to the other being certain to remove any thatch or dead grass that would interfere with emerging new growth and it’s then that I use my cordless rotary mower with bag as a vacuum cleaner. It’s adjusted slightly higher than my reel mower.
I mist the lawn in each zone with water for twenty minutes and the next morning mow it with the reel mower to stop the bleeding.
I’m fifty eight years old and in a few years I know that I’ll want a powered small reel mower. I’m only interested in cordless electric and I compared your Liberty to the new offering. When the time comes I’ll select the Liberty. The machine is already of proven quality from its gas variants just as my rotary’s quality and performance were known to me as my prior rotary was its gas variant, and I’m a pragmatist. The Liberty has a battery that is available widely and is removable from the machine as that’s the way it’s charged and enables the user to have multiple batteries whereas the new competitor’s design has an exclusive battery that resides in the handle of the machine and must be disassembled to be changed. These things matter in long term ownership.

The best idea is to have both mowers. Cylinder mowers don't do well on somewhat steep areas where a wheeled rotary mowers will work just fine.

Excellent video series from Allett! I love how expert knowledge is put over in an uncomplicated way for the layman.
I am really looking forward to getting my Allett 17" with the scarifier cartridge. I don't yet know if Liberty or Kensington.
Very worthwhile watching the whole video. It was nevertheless interesting to see the high-end Honda with the roller achieved quite a decent result.
But of course the heavy Allett Buckingham has much the best stripe contrast. Wonderful stuff!
*Question: I'm concerned that my utility grass type is not suitable for cutting short. Should I keep overseeding with an ornamental grass type?*

    Really great video.
I am REEL man for all the reasons sited within this comparison video.
I did want to add a few considerations for this ‘neutral’ video:
    * if you have a rotary mower, and want to move to a reel, be sure to keep your rotary so that you have a unit to pick up sticks and debris, so that you can vacuum the lawn prior to REEL Cutting.
    * reels perform the most precise cut and there for you will have a less maintenance and healthier lawn overall.
    * if you do not prefer to cut more than twice a week with a REEL, you can use a growth regulator with your fertilizing schedule so that you mow your precise REEL CUT lawn the same frequency as a rougher
    ROTARY CUT lawn.
** ALLETT has a interchangeable cartridge system to completely embrace and take care of the lawn. You can remove thatch, you can verticut, and you can brush, all with the same unit. Any lawn mower can cut the lawn, only an Allett can improve, promote, and deliver a showcase lawn which is cleaner, healthier, and less maintenance than a lawn subject to rotary cutting.
Thank you for manufacturing the best in value and producing the greatest results with your technology, for the lawn.

    • @mattdegooyer5870

Allett Mowers I do t understand how people say they can afford an Allett. Surely, the diary cost is substantial, but that’s just one moment in time. After that, the system of accessory may be purchased. There is a savings on fuel and lawn inputs. Inputs meaning water and fertilizer, due to a healthier lawn ultimately costs less to maintain. I have actually saved money over the years mowing with a cylinder. I love the accessories, because they are affordable and does not leave me with a multitude of tools in my limited space.
I am a fan of Allett.

Austin Jarrett thanks! I would be happy to assist in any way with Allett. Just yesterday my turf was looking a little drab, so I got out my electric (plug in), flimsy scarifier and scarified the entire lawn, then hand raked up all the piles of debris, then did a triple cut. It was a royal pain and took well into the dark of evening to finish the job. To have an all in one resource within a single Allett “system” would have a clear time saver and would allow me to make quick work of what should have been a very simple and enjoyable job. Instead, it was a process of using multiple tools and a lot of work. Allett systems make the lawn fast and efficient, and enjoyable. ...and that’s what a lawn is... enjoyable. Lawns are enjoyable with the all in one Allett. Please send me an email at mattdegooyer@mac.com and we can coordinate the next video. I am very much looking forward to that. Talk soon!

Great video - one of the best in recent times. Really like they way you describe the machete type action. I think you could have made more of the fact that the rotary mower is a "one dimensional" piece of equipment vs. the interchangeable cartridge system available from Allett. It's interesting (and I'm guessing your sales will be the real proof of this) that having ordered a Kensington - the one item that was on the longest lead time and not available at the time of the other items was a scarifier cartridge. The fact is that if a homeowner only bought 1 additional cartridge i.e. the scarifier - they would (a) have a healthier lawn (b) have less weeds (c) promote grass growth (d) greener appearance (e) less moss - all for between £ 142 - £ 202. Using a rotary setup, you have to buy an additional machine and quite considerable cost (double at least for a robust non electric corded machine). I think that's a very important point on the features/comparison/cost proposition. Anyway my "Man Maths" says a scarifier saves me from having to buy/rent a separate machine. Excellent VLOG. Well done & as a final thought - very helpful to hear that the blades in a home situation might only need to be sharpened every 2 years (albeit with some lapping). Would be helpful to have some links in the description to those other videos. The same applies for the time stamps you put up at the top of the video (very useful). Put those in the description too - they are easier for the viewer to refer to part way through the video.

I cut with a good make rotary at 2.5 inch and get real good results . Working on the principal that the grass colour is good because the longer blade allows the plant to absorb more energy , and therefore looks healthier . If I was to purchase an Allet would I have to cut lower and therefore loss my dark green colour .
I apologize if I sound doubting , but I am unsure whether to purchase or not . The Allet looks a real quality mower and this video is a first class production of the pros and cons of both mowers . Fairness in the extreme. Many Thanks for upload .

I'm not actually a fan of striped lawn , I much prefer it all nice and lush green and uniform. Funny enough my partner thinks the same lol
I'd highly disagree with your comment about mulch clippings, this is an untrue rumor and it provides nutrients to the grass when it breaks down which goes back into the soil. I actually never collect my clippings and the neighbours all envy how my lawn looks, so thick and green and oh so soft.
The only time I used to do it was at the start when I was getting rid of the weeds, after that never again.
Also with edge mowing, funny you should mention that, I literally dangle my old rotary half off and it cuts brilliantly (it is a plastic electric so it is very light), my new steel deck electric though I can't and I actually hate it a lot more than my cheaper plastic one. The cut is exactly the same but it being so heavy is just a PITA for no good reason.

I'm highly interested in the Liberty 43, but I'm not sure I can always mow @1.25", sometimes I would like to mow higher. Is there a way for the Allet to cut ✂️ @ 2"? My manual reel cuts as high as 2.25" and that has worked well when I can't keep up with it.

You know where you stand now: if you are "quite bored with the detail of this video, then... you probably are a rotary mower customer".

    • @ALLETTMOWERSUK
      @ALLETTMOWERSUK  ปีที่แล้ว

true though... most rotary customers just like to cut their grass once a week and see mowing their lawn as a chore

  • @grahammacklam4736

There's pros and cons of each and to my mind no clear winner. I still feel the vast majority of UK lawns (a ryegrass red fescue mix) even when properly cared for with tlc will look and be healthier when cut at or above 1 Inch....... which means using a rotary mower in many cases. Of course with a rye free lawn or the next generation of ryegrass that will tolerate low mowing then of course a cylinder mower will give a much better finish. Cut above 1 Inch I feel there is deminishing returns.

  • @audigex

It's such a shame Allet entirely ignore the sub-£1000 market (sub-£1200 for battery models) - I know reel mowers tend to be enthusiast products, but surely you could at least get somewhere a little closer to the £500 ego self-propelled 42cm model, now that you're sharing technology with them? £500 might be optimistic, but a £700 model wouldn't seem too absurd for a hobbyist level tool

He likes the IDEA of not burning fossil fuels, yet the electric power grid world wide is fueled by.... fossil fuels and more importantly if it wasn't, we'd not have enough power by any other means thus far without crippling the entire global economy. Glad he likes the "idea" though. Meanwhile those batteries that are likely made in CHINA created more pollution damage than the tiny engine would have that was rarely run anyway and is small in cubic combustion size. Good video otherwise.

      Thanks for your kind words
There will be no cars made in the UK from 2030... we aim to do the same with our mowers and have already stopped making petrol products.
Statistics say if we keep burning fossil fuels at the current rate there will be none left by 2060... and by then we will probably be in an environmental disaster with climate change - we will do everything in our power to help! Battery power is the future and many of our American customers are seeing that

@@ALLETTMOWERSUKDo you have an estimate of the actual power consumption from cutting grass with a rotary mower vs. the power rewired to cut the grass with a cylinder mechanism? I understand that cylinders use a lot less energy.
