- Well, we have the little 302 pulled down and semi cleaned up so we take a closer look. There is an anomaly which has caught my attention, but otherwise smooth sailing. Some parts have been hydroblasted and most fasteners have been plated... a good few new shiny parts have rocked up too.
For those interested in Jasons modified 351 engine build videos, there are three of them which are located on his channel. Here are the links:
Part 1 • Ford ZF Fairlane 40 Re...
Part 2 • Ford ZF Fairlane 41 Re...
Part 3 • Ford ZF Fairlane 43 Re...
Take care, hope you enjoy!
I was concerned Peter you were going to skip out on plating all the bits and bobs but you saved the day at 22:00😀
Gday Pete! Thanks for the shout out! Shame we couldn't continue into the evening haha
No doubt we'll catch up again, cheers and take care mate!
Hi Pete, heres a little story for you. About 19yrs ago I went to visit family in Melbourne, I live in NZ, during the course of my stay we went to the tip with a load if rubbish. While we were at the tip a car pulled up next to us the fella got out and asked for a lift with an old motor. It was a complete 302 clevo, it was bloody heavy , anyway we heaved it over the edge and it crashed into the concrete below where the loader picked it up and took it away. On the way home my mate was laughing at me (Holden bloke), you cant take it on the plane mate haha. Phil B
Haha you have to love when your cleaning up look for something and find the other 25 things youve been look for about a year ago haha
Take it easy mate Byron 👍
Sounds a bit rough I know, but the timing covers if your patient and want to save a few bob, you could mig up the worst bits and grind it back. its just a sandwiched plate that's sealed with RTV anyway. the pitted face can be sealed with an epoxy. its only exposed to coolant.
Listening to those doves or pigeons must drive you nuts everyday
hey up mate went to give you a thumbs up before watching and there were already 302
How are you Peter? Sorry it took so long to watch the video but I've been busier than a 1 armed paper hanger!! Lol.. Any way, Love the look of the block abs i think you could fill that divet on the deck of the block with either JB Weld as you stated or silfloss/braze. Just looking for something to press the gasket against. Would be way too much decking needed to remove that.
Anyway.. Good to see you and hope to see another installment soon!!
Peace and love from Parma, Michigan!! God Bless!!
I wouldn’t be too worried about the mark in the block, just check it with a gasket that it will seal
Looking good Peter.
looks like someone's dropped the head on the block sometime in the past as they were removing' it /installing it run a top on all the cylinder hard bolt threads is copper coat the headgaskets just for back up
If you are trying to keep costs down then JB Weld (or similar) will work providing you use a Fel Pro style Head Gasket (composition style) I have seen and repaired that sort of damage when the customer could not find the money to do the job properly. I had no failures with these repairs (even though it goes against the grain to do it and if my Trade School Teachers knew what i did they would not be happy) The repairs that i did like this all achieved over 100,000 km of running and possibly more after i lost track of them.
Peter you should setup to do your own zinc plating for nut, bolts, small parts etc
Oven cleaner is great if your worried about the drains you use molasses takes longer also great on rust .$70 heaps in Victoria hard to get food grade in NSW I use it for rum.
Try the stock feed places for molasses.
I got a 20L bucket which they use for stock feed.
Food grade. You bet 👍🏽
It is a very heavy and hard to keepI got some in 2 litre mik container and it kept growing after black strap I can get it 14kg $ 80 plus $ 80 to deliver thanks Mate you in NSW .Where I am between Raymond Terace and Karuah. The stock feed MAFIA charge more than in Sydney@@aaronblyth596
Pete you know deep down you want to deck it for piece of mind.
Of course Tony would say just deck it ect (and as you agree he’s probably right) but as you said you’re doing a budget build up…….although you are putting money in it regardless of the amount and it would be a shame for it to go to potty because of overlooking something. I know you enough to know if you don’t get it seen to you’ll never at peace with it. Btw love the changes to your end credits, those old photos take me back to a much simpler time that I took for granted as all young people do
Depression certainly should be filled with something I’d have thought, just to give clamping support to the gasket in the area
Try GM Holden head stud sealer in the head bolts just in case there is a crack between head bolt and coolant passage. Give the deck a light skim. Good luck. P.S are you moving house locations?
What’s the block like with a straight edge over it?
Hi Pete, just wondering what happend with the big block ford block that you were going to fire up..?
I have not seen a mark on a block like that. Could it be corrosion or electrolysis? It would have to have been a hell of an impact!
Hi Pete, just asking , how much did that haul of lifters, rings , cam etc cost you in Aus?... looking at doing the same thing here in NZ with mine.
I think it would be cheap insurance to deck the block.
Could that depression be filled with braise ? Or if you're even considering JB Weld, you could maybe fill it with soft solder since soft solder has a very high meting point and once it's soldered properly it will never come off.
Just a thought, engines are not my area of expertise. BTW, lovely build on Jason's engine, what a beauty !
Would soft soldering it hold its form totally? Ignorant question sorry, but I’ve heard of people saying it before and wasn’t sure how it held up over time with heat cycles ect
@@GODEES77 Sure it would, back in the day, lead was used as a car body filler before someone invented two part putty. In this situation, it's just filling a depression in a large piece of iron and is not stressed at all. Soft solder is surprisingly hard but could be sanded dead flat on the iron block, in fact, once carefully finished, you'd hardly know it was there. As for heat cycles, solder, which is lead and tin, melts at about 400 ish degrees C and is very stable. Old cars filled with lead are still rolling around and many many years of sitting in the hot sun and getting cold at night.
@@ellesmerewildwood4858 thanks for your information, very handy to know. My 1st thought when I saw it was “just get some knead it” 😂😂. I remember my mate crashed his car when we were younger and he had no bog, so he used knead it and shaped it with a sander. 25 years later when he dragged it out of his parents paddock it was still like the day we did it. That HQ nose cone hangs proudly in his man cave to this day. We often quip when something metal needs repair, get some knead it
Hi Peter. Would you sell me a complete reconditioned carter thermoquad throttle body off a 351? I have a change over throttle body.
What grit was the hone you used Peter ?
Do you use a different grit for moly or cast.
Looking forward to the actual rebuild.
Will give me the motivation to get mine moving. 👍🏽👍🏽
Hi, I further honed it and I think it was a mistake. The hone is 180G which is too course. Moly should be finer, I think around 240, so I might need to smooth it out a bit, cheers.
@@PeterAndersonsThank you Peter for your reply.
I very much appreciate it.
Good to know about the grade of grit.
Think I may need to do some research. 👍🏽

Hey Peter, I really enjoyed the Jason Hill Cleveland build.
Nice to hear from you again so soon.
Looking forward to this build especially the C4 transmission.
I will most likely need to refresh my C4 (My XD) which has been in proper storage for 30 years, so hopefully your transmission rebuild video will give me the confidence to tackle mine unless I give it to someone and fork out 2-3k or whatever they charge these days. I'd rather try and do it myself if it's not too involved.
Anyways mate, Thanks again, take care and God Bless.
Regards
Tony
