Modern horror game devs need to start taking notes from Fears to Fathom. Putting the player in a realistic situation while utilizing the proper methods of building tension = a solid horror experience.

You can watch the stream, he played it normally, then speedrun it, then played fears to fathom. The stream is called “horror for babies” or somthin like that.
He did at the beginning of the stream this is from! That's part of why this video is titled "the horror games that ACTUALLY scared me", because BanBan.. definitely didn't. At 4:46 he says "this puts the bird to shame", and that's referencing the Opila Bird scene in Banban.
What’s crazy about the first chapter of fears to fathom is that whilst your eating lasagna and watching TV, there’s a brief moment where you can see the intruder’s feet walk up the stairs
I hadn't noticed until now but you can see the guy walk upstairs at 2:33. Always love how Spiff makes rewatchable videos so I can notice little things like that.
I can't remember what video it was, but I remember someone saying that watching Spigg made watching the horror easier cause he wasn't scared. Unfortunately the inverse applies where because Spigg is scared, I am also much more scared.
The loud screaming / screeching noise when the guy lunges at you is supposed to invoke the sudden rush of fear and panic you would feel in that kind of scenario. It compensates the fact it's a game that can't recreate the scenario for you.
I forgot about this game! I watched the first chapter when it was just published and my soul left my body halfway through. Glad to see the developer is still at it.
SO TRUE!! I always get the creeps when a single player game is in first person and there's no npcs around. Feels like if I turn a corner I'll get jumped or smth.
Spiff started to get anxious and scared, became a bit more talkative than usual in this particular game and do more goofy stuff LOL. It might just be me, though.
As a person named Cara, I got really excited when I saw my name here because I don’t see it a lot in media. But it actually creeped me out a lot hearing it used in this context, and I got legit scared when he yelled out for her to leave him alone, because I wasn’t reading the text.
Yay, Spiff uploaded 😊! My favourite part of the video is when Spiff said "It's Spiffing time!" and Spiffed everywhere. Please continue with uploading absolute great content. Truly one of the youtubers of all time
Imo, Fears to Fathom's horror mainly comes from two places: pacing and realism. Every chapter masterfully utilizes slow buildup through drawn-out, mundane scenes, sprinkling just a few worrying moments (like the person walking up the stairs in Chapter 1) to make sure the tension isn't lost and keeps on building until you either die or escape just by the skin of your teeth. Even if the people submitting these stories are lying or embellishing details, each scenario feels like something that could easily happen to you, if you were unlucky. No inhuman monsters, no supernatural elements, just pure, realistic horror.
I like that the 'Most watched' timeline thing helps prepare me for the jumpscares or I could never get through videos like this...since closed captions don't usually help in walkthroughs like they do in movies
as an amateur game dev this is really charming in a unique way because all i keep seeing is parts where they thought “ooooh what if i had a part where [x] that’d be fun to try to program”
Spiff talking about having nightmares about driving reminded me of many nightmares I've had over the years. When I got a learner's permit I started having nightmares about crashing and killing someone and its made me terrified of driving since.
Now you gotta be imagine this game in VR.. imagine how much more terrifying it would be to feel like you are actually inside a dark house at night in the middle of a home invasion. I’m already terrified to get out of bed at night so I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to simulate one of my worst fears😰

Since Banban is referenced a couple times in this video (ex. 4:46, "this puts the bird to shame" referring to Opila Bird), I'll mention that he played Banban before switching to Fears to Fathom lmao. Just a bit of context.
Spiff if you haven't already you should play The Closing Shift, I think it's made by the same developer, or it just really has a similar vibe and it's honestly a great game! One of my favorite horror games
@@averynerdybookworm972 oh ok, I think I got a bit mixed up because I watched markiplier play these ones and the closing shift and I remember a part of a video where he's like "is this the same developer?" I refuse to believe there are actual people irl who do the exact horror trope of "ignoring obvious red flags because they assume it's a bizarre prank but then they realize it's actually not that guy"
No but srsly, walking down in the complete darkness to get a glass of water was represented so well here. That's exactly how it feels when you have to get up in the middle of the night and are parched, and you're scared to go downstairs but have too because you won't be able to fall back asleep unless you drink water.
I like to think that the reason Spiff died at 58:40 is because the game heard the sub announcement say "fuck you thats why" and she got pissed hearing that
The second one oddly reminds me of a time where I was staying at a hotel, and found someone asleep under the bed.. Yea.. Under the bed.. Another time I found a knife under the bed in a bag but that one was not as worrying as finding a whole person.. I do not know why the person was there but I called the police and just waited outside.. Did not wake the person because I was afraid of what they might do if they woke up. Not the worst encounter I have had.. But its for sure a odd one.
On the note of 12:30 when asked what chat would do and that pizza has actually saved somebody b4. Ive seen multiple accounts of somebody calling 911 and disguising it to ordering pizza. I find it amazing that "ordering food" is enough to save somebody. But also an testament to human nature that it has ever had to come to that. Im glad this game is not only enjoyable to watch but also sheds some light on the fact these kinds of things can and have actually happened.

53:08 I've seen a ton of gameplays from my favorite TH-camrs and that jumpscare was the scariest one by far. OMG. I was so surprised that Spiff got Zeke inside that I forgot she hides in there....
Ngl my one major gripe with Fears to Fathom is that is seems to rely way too much on loud noises for jumpscares. Like damn knowing some dude is in my house with a knife is scary enough I don’t need a fuckin air raid siren on top of that
For me, it's scarier. If you have a dog, you'll always know if someone who isn't supposed to be there comes anywhere near the house, but if somebody gets in, I'd be terrified of them hurting the dog

At 4:46 he says "this puts the bird to shame", and that's referencing the Opila Bird scene in Banban.
Hopefully he makes a video on garten of banban soon because I really want to see his full reaction to the game
@@oranplan1630 yeah I know, but I just want to see him put into video form. I'll probably watch the stream anyways
These jump scares so far have gotten me each time…
see my banner for cookies ?!?!?!?!
I think it's just how FUCKING loud the "chase" noise is.
did anyone see the guy going upp the stairs while spiff was eating in the first story?
i guess that show must have been really good
Is there a timestamp

@@codiecola3636 well, after 2:33
@@codiecola3636 thats terrifying
I can't remember what video it was, but I remember someone saying that watching Spigg made watching the horror easier cause he wasn't scared. Unfortunately the inverse applies where because Spigg is scared, I am also much more scared.
Joe punching the dude who broke into your house in the face is in the mix of so hilarious and so epic.
The loud screaming / screeching noise when the guy lunges at you is supposed to invoke the sudden rush of fear and panic you would feel in that kind of scenario. It compensates the fact it's a game that can't recreate the scenario for you.
8 minutes in and I am already THIS close to stealing Spiff's knees
Functional legs are unnecessary to be a true gamer. You cannot stop him.
I forgot about this game! I watched the first chapter when it was just published and my soul left my body halfway through. Glad to see the developer is still at it.
That first jumpscare was what I needed to wake up
Same
53:10 The fear in Spiffs face had me laughing for like 10 minutes I don't think I've ever seen Spiff so scared
Spiff: *sees a volume meter when hiding in closet*
Also spiff, the second the door is broken open: AAAAAAAA
You know what's scary?
When you're alone in a fps
The feeling of being watched yet not being able to see it
That was actually a game
SO TRUE!! I always get the creeps when a single player game is in first person and there's no npcs around. Feels like if I turn a corner I'll get jumped or smth.

@@paul_gaming43 really nice game, check it out if you have time
Spiff started to get anxious and scared, became a bit more talkative than usual in this particular game and do more goofy stuff LOL. It might just be me, though.
Spiff vibing to the laundromat music while eating a granola bar is now my favorite thing.
7:11 what the shit that got me. I love how he just calmly peeked out from behind first as if you were the monster instead.
As a person named Cara, I got really excited when I saw my name here because I don’t see it a lot in media. But it actually creeped me out a lot hearing it used in this context, and I got legit scared when he yelled out for her to leave him alone, because I wasn’t reading the text.
The first run just pissed me off lmao. When Spiff got killed I literally went “Damn bro, I can’t believe leaving the door open had consequences.”
Well, you know youtubers. Gotta leave the doors open for the catz.

Yay, Spiff uploaded 😊! My favourite part of the video is when Spiff said "It's Spiffing time!" and Spiffed everywhere. Please continue with uploading absolute great content. Truly one of the youtubers of all time
I know it's a meme but "spiffed everywhere" sounds like a dirty euphemism lol

i freaking love how spiff’s chat just starts spamming LOAFF every time loaf shows up on screen, its like that one monkey neuron activation meme
Have you played Faith : The Unholy Trinity ? It apparently is scary as sh*t and the graphics are very unique
Yeah it’s all pixel based it’s really cool
I love those games so much
It looks really nice tbh it's just also nightmare fuel
faith is downright terrifying, if spiff's reading this, we very much recommend it
32:37
I love when spiff breaks games, its always great :]
this has genuinely scared me more that all of the horror games combined
I like that the 'Most watched' timeline thing helps prepare me for the jumpscares or I could never get through videos like this...since closed captions don't usually help in walkthroughs like they do in movies
The fact that bro got a scar from scaring loaf so bad truly means this game is scary, cause it scares the person so bad that they get injured
as an amateur game dev this is really charming in a unique way because all i keep seeing is parts where they thought “ooooh what if i had a part where [x] that’d be fun to try to program”
It’s so funny when it gets quiet cuz horror and then I just hear my dog snoring like an old man. Really softens the blows enough for me to watch lmaoo
Spiff talking about having nightmares about driving reminded me of many nightmares I've had over the years. When I got a learner's permit I started having nightmares about crashing and killing someone and its made me terrified of driving since.
Me running over a family of 4 after boozemaxxing
Now you gotta be imagine this game in VR.. imagine how much more terrifying it would be to feel like you are actually inside a dark house at night in the middle of a home invasion. I’m already terrified to get out of bed at night so I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to simulate one of my worst fears😰
48:50 I love how fluid and natural the throw and slam feels
This was one of my favorite streams to be on! I'm so happy it got made into a video, I'd love to see more games like this in the future
Spiff you have the weirdest upload schedule and got that I am grateful cause that means I can usually catch these videos early!
Seeing spiff play stuff wrong intentionally makes me so irrationally angry, and somehow so thoroughly amused.
Love how you handle horror games, especially ones that truly scare you. You're my favorite streamer and youtuber to go to for this content nowadays. You're constantly pushing the limits of games and playing new ones that you're interested in, and I love every second of it! Keep doing you spigg :]
Since Banban is referenced a couple times in this video (ex. 4:46, "this puts the bird to shame" referring to Opila Bird), I'll mention that he played Banban before switching to Fears to Fathom lmao. Just a bit of context.
as someone who goes into miniplayer watching fnaf 4 can confirm its horrifying
Spiff if you haven't already you should play The Closing Shift, I think it's made by the same developer, or it just really has a similar vibe and it's honestly a great game! One of my favorite horror games
They’re not made by the same developer, but it is super fun!
I agree it is a fantastic game, but it is made by chillas art.
@@averynerdybookworm972 oh ok, I think I got a bit mixed up because I watched markiplier play these ones and the closing shift and I remember a part of a video where he's like "is this the same developer?" Honestly I just watched Jacksepticeye play it and it fucked me up for days
This Game gives me the chills. Now i would love to see spiff play The Closing shift. They have a similar vibe.
I refuse to believe there are actual people irl who do the exact horror trope of "ignoring obvious red flags because they assume it's a bizarre prank but then they realize it's actually not that guy"
Tbf you never expect a horror type scenario to happen to you so you'd try to rationalize it

No but srsly, walking down in the complete darkness to get a glass of water was represented so well here. That's exactly how it feels when you have to get up in the middle of the night and are parched, and you're scared to go downstairs but have too because you won't be able to fall back asleep unless you drink water.
I like to think that the reason Spiff died at 58:40 is because the game heard the sub announcement say "fuck you thats why" and she got pissed hearing that
Honestly, the low poly visuals was enough uncanny valley to be much scarier than any gruesome hd visuals
12:45 I appreciate how some nuns looked at a pitchfork and thought some elementary schoolers would enjoy it
You know a horror game is true fear if spiff is scared
31:33 man saw the mic detector thing and decided to *NAAHHHH*, that was really funny
I absolutely love it when the mic input comes up and the moment Spiff makes noises chat just yells at him to shut the f*ck up 😂😂
The second one oddly reminds me of a time where I was staying at a hotel, and found someone asleep under the bed..
My favorite part was when he said "It's spiggin' time"
And then he spigged all over ‘em
On the note of 12:30 when asked what chat would do and that pizza has actually saved somebody b4. Ive seen multiple accounts of somebody calling 911 and disguising it to ordering pizza. I find it amazing that "ordering food" is enough to save somebody. But also an testament to human nature that it has ever had to come to that. Im glad this game is not only enjoyable to watch but also sheds some light on the fact these kinds of things can and have actually happened.
Yeah, a girl called 911 under the pretense of ordering a pizza and managed to get help against her abusive boyfriend.
Since then, I believe most operators are ready to take pizza calls with a grain of salt
@@ryokiritani4187I still think that honestly speaking that kind of situation is super f*cked up and im really glad that operators have learned to adopt that tactic. I know its most likely happened more than once

Like damn knowing some dude is in my house with a knife is scary enough I don’t need a fuckin air raid siren on top of that
I like how when he saw that it picks up his mic he instead of staying quiet, decided that screaming “NOW” would be a good idea
I think we can all agree that staying home all alone at night without any pets is and will always be one of the scariest experiences youll ever face
For me, it's scarier. If you have a dog, you'll always know if someone who isn't supposed to be there comes anywhere near the house, but if somebody gets in, I'd be terrified of them hurting the dog
