18:24 Charles is a form of hermit-spider of sorts, yeah. It seems like they've been a consistent problem, given the temple hints that they've long been a major issue to the point that past civilizations made a method with which to keep the species at bay, but I think the only real reason Charles is so strong is because he's both been able to absorb a lot of the power of the eggs, he's grown a fair bit from hatching, and he's gotten himself a _very_ nicely armored shell. His face really would be his only weak point, since the internals of the engine contain his own internals, likely grown to fit the train by now. The legs are probably able to be lost and regrown, likely armored (though the main body wouldn't be since they seek out shells, the legs would since they have to be outside) and seemingly don't contain any sensitive parts, likely including much feeling in them - just enough to know where they are and what they're touching, or at least if they are touching something. Not enough for the bullets to really help. The fire probably helps slow him through a combination of fucking with his biological hydraulics (if he does indeed work like a normal spider), and by heating the entire train body around him which absolutely cannot be particularly enjoyable. If he were some mythical true hybrid species that were part train, it's likely that he would also be able to set down on the tracks and use them, which - while it would be very terrifying to see an engine rush you and then stand up on spider legs and sprint - doesn't make much sense since he's already so fast. I also doubt there's any room in there for him to actually retract his legs. The most surprising thing about Charles from a biological standpoint is honestly his face, which both seems very resistant to damage (not too surprising for a creature of that size) and oddly humanoid, although it does display a conventional predatory eye setup. That, and the train whistle, which while clearly mainly a stylistic choice makes little sense for him to be able to use it otherwise. All that said - monsters appear to be commonplace in this world, given the guy we play as literally has a profession around hunting and killing problematic ones, and also Barry's existence. The true question is whether they're simply odd creatures, such as I've detailed above, or if they really are something supernatural - which might well explain the train horn thing.
I don’t know about Charles being a hermit-spider, those hunt with webs, Charles behavior is much closer to that of a huntsman spider. It has a territory (island) and will charge at anything is sees with blazing speed until he catches it. Now that I think about it, Charles would probably be MORE terrifying if he used "webs", given his train aesthetic. Imagine if he could make webs that were fake train rails and connect them to actual train rail to make trains go directly into its lair. Then, like a real spider, it could eat its own rails, making it impossible to track down the missing trains. Also, the face and the horn make me believe that even if the spider-train form isn’t it’s normal form, the actual spider is definitely something supernatural. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have spider weaknesses and strength, Charles definitely has the speed of a huntsman spider scaled up so I don’t think a real life Charles could chase you for very long, given those spider generally don’t have to chase for long since they usually catch their prey at the first attack. Edit: I also once read somewhere that spider breathes trough huge tubes and that it prevented spiders from being very large since having respiratory pipes that big would make oxygen leak out. So Charles is either supernatural or has a respiratory system different from other spiders
@@letendreelliott8778 I'm not saying he's just purely a scaled-up form of an existing creature, just that he does have some attributes attributable to a lot of creatures, and that's one given the shell. It would be very interesting to imagine that he could perhaps make false rails, and given the properties of spider silk they likely _could_ take the weight of a train, or be strung across the track and cut one open as it stops it in place. He likely can't chase for too long a time also due to the simple fact that his particular shell is clearly rather heavy, even if the train's internals are mostly gone. For the false rail thing, I wonder if perhaps he and his species adapt to their environment or a chosen facet of it, such as his train covering? In a supernatural way, perhaps feeding off of some collective consciousness interpretation of what it mimics, but that would also explain his whistle. As for the respiratory thing, if any spider had a genetic mutation causing the tubes to be multiplied, using a cluster of small ones rather than one large one, then that growth cap would be easily surpassed. That said, I don't know if there are other limitations keeping them small, but it would be possible to adapt at least that aspect to solve its issues.
Yall talking about the biology of a demon train is so cool. I love overthinking shit like this, especially trying to figure out how XYZ creature would actually work in our world. I am very impressed with the amount of detail everyone is putting in. Great job all around.

I find it funny that someone asked if you’re going to play Hollow Knight on stream when you were making a new save while in an old save to “combine” them, which is something used in all glitches speedruns in Hollow Knight.
This might sound contradictive but Spiff has one of those channels that's both entertaining and fun to watch but also so comforting to fall asleep to as well. Literally all his videos are great, 24/7 lmao
It gives really neat insight on how the game is built, though. I had assumed Eugene on the train was coded to be only enabled during his segment, and would be disabled if you sequence-broke. The fact he's only thrown off/disabled when the train gets under a certain health threshold is really interesting :)
I just watched the other attempt a couple of hours ago and was disappointed it'd required cheating. This is exactly what I wanted to see, posted close enough to the instant I wanted it.
Something I'll always appreciate about this game is how the different guns actually have different functions and merits. It would've been so easy for the dev to throw his hands up and just not even bother balancing the weapons.

Charles is just a misunderstood train without any friends, and all he did was hug Eugene
Yeah
lol 😂
Yea he hugged him real tight and gave him a bunch of *toothy* kisses 🥰🥰🥰
hey remind me why we killed him idk about you but he doesn't seem to be hurting any one
@@I-like-cows yeah all he does is take out a cult and their leader other than that just a couple of scary jokes
Glad Spiff took Eugenes sage advice in the boss fight and got more headshots, cause Charles was just not taking enough damage otherwise. Made it worth saving the legend

I normally never make second comments but i just HAD TO on this one, this was the awesomest thing ive ever seen a TH-camr do.
It’s absolutely hilarious how spiff is just watching a Marble race while he is being chased by a man eating spider train
Eugene living gives us hope that maybe we too can survive whatever life throws at us
@@RedB4048 twins: 😀
We just might need a little help :)
@@RedB4048 not too high in requirements.
I like how i was first pretty afraid of charles and sorta had some difficulty sleeping for the first few night. But with more and more people trying to break choo choo charles, now i saw charles i was like "Heeeey, charles, there you are" :D
"Do you wanna go for a walk in the beach? :D"
younger sibling using the 10 yo account, right? charles is not *thaaat* scary
Yeah it’s always like that for me too, horror messes me up unless I recontextualize it so watching speedrun stuff is great
Maybe the real Eugene was the friends we made along the way
Likely
You have become my favourite video game channel. While I struggle to finish a game, you break them. And to top it off, the vibe and energy is so chill and cozy
spiff literally went from eugene being his pal to charles and chat being the only things he paid attention to
Spiff always finds the most interesting unintended challenges
I find it funny that someone asked if you’re going to play Hollow Knight on stream when you were making a new save while in an old save to “combine” them, which is something used in all glitches speedruns in Hollow Knight.
You should get a secret achievement for this and a secret cutscene
Soon, the dev probably would alongside making it possible by someone who isn't a god like Spiff.
Spigg is not a god
He just has amazing levels of tenacity and time
This might sound contradictive but Spiff has one of those channels that's both entertaining and fun to watch but also so comforting to fall asleep to as well. Literally all his videos are great, 24/7 lmao
The funniest moment was while you were dying to Charles, you just hear Eugene in the distance yell “GET SOME HEAD SHOTS!”
Eugene is the embodiment of a giga chad put into a npc
Edit:"Ima popular boi"
Indeed
Agreed
HE ISN'T TAKING ENOUGH DAMAGE
GET SOME HEADSHOTS
@@kdevelopergw HE ISN'T TAKING ENOUGH DAMAGE GET SOME HEADSHOTS
@@tytheghost3024 WE'RE COMIN FOR YA CHARLES
The community saving Eugene with such determination is great to see 😂
an open world horror game like this is so cool and not really scary, so saving eugene should be an option
Yeah
It gives really neat insight on how the game is built, though.
I had assumed Eugene on the train was coded to be only enabled during his segment, and would be disabled if you sequence-broke. The fact he's only thrown off/disabled when the train gets under a certain health threshold is really interesting :)
Charles might be the most powerful boss in any video game. Even when you break the physics of the game it only slows him down
I was the one who recommended ground flames at 25:43! Glad to see I could be of help in this long and painful endeavor!
Watching that stream was like watching grass grow, but there was great commentary and a blast to have on in the background. 10/10 would recommend.
19:45 I love that you can see Barry moving away from mspiff like he knows Charles in coming lol
18:50 Auxiliary fun hippo fact: recently a two year old had half their body swallowed by a hippo before *also* escaping, unharmed
14:38 "Quadra-Shit" is my new favourite catchphrase now.
Spiff grinding out bangers before Christmas, GG to the man
This man trades several years off his life with Eugene's, what a true homie
Spiff is like the physical embodiment of the law of unintended consequences
43:45 is just too perfect
I'm calling it that Eugene% will become a speedrunning category for this game, so long as this isn't patched out.
I just watched the other attempt a couple of hours ago and was disappointed it'd required cheating. This is exactly what I wanted to see, posted close enough to the instant I wanted it.
Saving Eugene is the ticket to achieving godhood
Thank you for saving Eugene in your infinite love 🙌🙌
Something I'll always appreciate about this game is how the different guns actually have different functions and merits. It would've been so easy for the dev to throw his hands up and just not even bother balancing the weapons.
That is epic. Thank you ☺️💞
There were a few times I was raging with you and rooting for your win and wonderful to see it happen!❤️
Spiff doing stuff Spiffway again THE ONLY RIGHT WAY ❤
SO INFINITELY GLAD we get more spiff coverage on this amazing game, loved the first video and watched it so many times lol. Giga Charles is who I live for 💞
I’m so glad you did this, I’m glad you never quit, I’m glad I stubbled upon you a year ago, thank you spiff.
I'll be honest...I did not plan on watching every second of this. Originally, I just wanted to know if saving Eugene could be done. But only a few seconds into the video I had to know how the challenge was even going to work and if it could be done. Then I wanted to know all the setbacks and how much resolve he actually had to finish what he started.
This video was definitely a good watch.
19:37 Spiff: “he must still be at the water”
Charles: “insert Bruce from finding Nemo hellho”
The developer should make this way easier and make it a secret ending
Better, don't make it easier but if there's a sequel... Make it canon.
@@DropsOfMars "Eugine didn't acutally die, a rancher came and saved him"
Good ideas, I’ll go ask him
@@Artur-xd6ve Helen’s pet rock saved him with mouth to mouth.
Congrats on setting the Eugene % World Record. :3
My theory is that Charles knows how strong Eugene is, so he is extra aggressive considering both the player and Eugene are a dangerous pair
ITS BEEN SO LONG! SINCE LAST I'VE SEEN EUGENE, LOST TO THIS MONSTER!! TO THE TRAIN BEHIND THE SLAUGHTER
"If he's thrusting, dont try rushing"
-spiff 2022 apparently
This right here proves that Spiff is a man of focus, commitment, and sheer fucking will.
Giga Eugene doesn't fear any Giga Charles, for he reigns as the supreme NPC.
i hope the creator adds the ability to save Eugene legitimately in honor of this run
This is probably the 4th time i've watched this. Spiff 100% hit his goal of rewatchable videos
Hey Spiff, just wanted to say thank you for the wonderful content over the past while and I hope you and your loved ones have a very good Christmas or December 25th depending on your traditions! You’ve given my partner and i some pretty dope moments and your speedrun skills always impress the hell outta me. Keep up the fantastic work!
If this was that crazy, i can only imagine how horrid and hellish a damageless run would be
it can't be as bad as this was tho
i have no clue how my brain works but i'd rather watch spiff going out on walkies with charles than watch a full packed action gameplay
flashforward to the game dev adding a patch that lets Charles onto the dock, or gives Eugene dialogue for if you ditch him on the train
"And i would have to hear the horn over....and over"
>SHAUN
>another hand touches the beacon
It must be so menacing for the cultists to see some random guy bhopping off Charles' face at them, kiting the death beast along in an attempt to pick up random pieces of metal off the ground
